AB - Asymptomatic outdoor dogs can be carriers of Babesia canis, but data describing the development of an acute phase response (APR) are not available. We hypothesised that these dogs have a moderate APR that could be detected by hematological and biochemical changes. Two groups of Babesia-exposed dogs were represented by nine B. canis PCR-positive and twenty B. canis PCR-negative, seroreactive dogs. The control group consisted of ten Babesia-naïve dogs. Serum amyloid A (SAA), paraoxonase-1 (PON-1), complete blood count, and biochemistry parameters were analysed by standard methodologies. Protein and lipoprotein fractions were separated using agarose gel electrophoresis (GE), and the dominant diameters of lipoproteins were assessed on gradient GE. Results were evaluated using non-parametric tests and the Receiver Operating Characteristic curve. SAA (median 39.0 μg/mL, range 2.2–48.8 μg/mL), total protein (median 74.7 g/L, range 57.1–98.3 g/L) and the dominant diameter of α-lipoproteins (median 13.31 nm, range 12.09–14.17 nm) in B. canis PCR-positive dogs were higher relative to dogs in the control group or dogs that were PCR-negative but seroreactive (p < 0.001 for both groups). Mild to moderate anemia (4/29), thrombocytopenia (7/29), and leukocyte counts that were close to the upper limit of the reference range were encountered in both Babesia-exposed groups. When compared to controls, Babesia-exposed dogs displayed decreased a PON-1 activity and protein GE pattern consistent with low-grade chronic inflammation (p < 0.001 for both groups). Dogs with detectable amounts of B. canis DNA in blood contain increased levels of SAA and total protein along with α-lipoproteins that display an increased diameter relative to those dogs with positive Babesia serology but undetectable levels of B. canis DNA in blood.

AB - This review paper discusses the content of natural ( 40K, 238U, 226Ra, and 232Th) and artificial (137Cs) radionuclides in the soil of the mountains of Maljen, Tara and Kopaonik in the Republic of Serbia over 2002-2015. In addition, the paper gives radiation hazard parameters, i.e., radium equivalent activity, absorbed dose rate, annual effective dose equivalent, external hazard index, annual gonadal dose equivalent, and excess lifetime cancer risk outdoors that we calculated from the obtained content of the natural radionuclides in the soil samples. We compared the parameters to previously published results for different parts of the country and looked into the radioecological status of the investigated areas.

AB - Belgrade, the capital of the Republic of Serbia, is an endemic location for canine babesiosis caused by Babesia canis. This tick-borne disease occurs seasonally in regions with moderate continental climate. However, recent clinical data show that 1) some cases of canine babesiosis have been recorded during the winter, and 2) canine babesiosis is spreading to the northern parts of Europe with a colder climate, which is a region previously free of this disease. Our study investigates the occurrence of canine babesiosis in different seasons over 2013-2016, and explores a short-term link between meteorological parameters and number of diagnosed cases of canine babesiosis in Belgrade. It also looks into possible long-term correlations that span one year before the onset of the disease. Based on 872 recorded cases over four years, our results show a bimodal seasonal distribution of canine babesiosis, with a pronounced peak in the spring, and a less conspicuous one in the autumn. Throughout the year, even over the coldest and warmest periods, there is a broad range of temperatures and relative humidifies when the disease is recorded. Over one year prior to the spring and autumn onset of the disease, we found a noticeable impact of temperature and relative humidity, and to a lesser extent, of atmospheric pressure and cloud cover, on the number of diagnosed cases. These findings imply short-term and long-term relationships between occurrence of acute canine babesiosis and certain meteorological parameters, and they open further questions that need to be investigated in order to understand the epidemiology of this disease.

AB - Mosses are biondicators of environmental pollution because they absorb radionuclides from precipitation and dry deposition. In this paper, the ability of mosses to absorb and accumulate radionuclides is used to determine the content of naturally occurring 40K,238U, 226Ra and 232Th, and an artificial 137Cs, in the suburban areas of Belgrade city: themunicipalities of Palilula, Zemun, Rakovica and Lazarevac. Samples of moss were collected from trees during the spring and autumn 2010. After drying and milling, the samples were measured at a low-level HPGe detector, relative efficiency of 30.3%. The measured specific activities are: 155-270 Bq/kg for 40K, MDA-38 Bq/kg for 238U, 5.8-41 Bq/kg for 226Ra, 5.4-25 Bq/kg for 232Th and 18-166 Bq/kg for 137Cs. The obtained results show differences in the content of radionuclides in mosses across the investigated sites. For example, the highest content of naturally occurring 238U, 226Raand 232Th is detected in mosses in Zemun, and the lowest in Palilula, while the highestcontent of the anthropogenic 137Cs is detected in the municipality of Lazarevac (160 Bq/kg), and the lowest in the municipality of Palilula (21 Bq/kg).

For example, the highest content of naturally occurring 238U, 226Raand 232Th is detected in mosses in Zemun, and the lowest in Palilula, while the highestcontent of the anthropogenic 137Cs is detected in the municipality of Lazarevac (160 Bq/kg), and the lowest in the municipality of Palilula (21 Bq/kg).",

AB - The activity concentrations of beryllium-7, a natural radiotracer that is considered as a tracer of the strato-spheric-tropospheric exchange, shows a distinct behaviour in Northern Europe compared to the central and southern parts of the continent. In this study, we use the measurements collected at four sampling stations in Scandinavia (Ivalo, Umea, Kista, Risoe) between 2001 and 2010 and investigate their trends, periodicities and residuals with the aim to further understand the common features in the beryllium-7 data records in northern sampling sites. The beryllium-7 activity concentrations exhibit statistically significant positive trends that range from an average value of 1.50%/year to an average value of 2.96%/year. We detect a one-year periodicity in all the sites, and in the southernmost site, Risoe in Denmark, additional higher-frequency harmonics. In the residual time series, we find outliers that represent occurrences of extremely high beryllium-7 activity concentration. Cross-correlations of the beryllium-7 residuals across the four sites decrease with increasing distance; similarly, as indicated by local Hurst exponents the records exhibit long-range correlations that weaken towards the end of the investigated period. To investigate the causes of the detected trends, we also calculate correlations between beryllium-7 and factors related to its production, transport and removal from the atmosphere: in particular, cross-correlations of the beryllium-7 residuals with residuals in sunspot number, local temperature, atmospheric pressure and precipitation, as well as Arctic Oscillation index and North Atlantic Oscillation index. Most of the obtained correlations, however, are not statistically significant, highlighting the need to analyse a longer time period in order to evaluate the impact of different factors on the airborne beryllium-7 activity concentration.

sloju atmosfere spadaju temperatura i količina padavina. U ovom radu stoga
E-OBS gridovane klimatologije (verzija 15) i potom bilinearnom interpolacijom
Madrid (8,71·10-5 Bq·m-3/god), Bilbao (3,13·10-5 Bq·m-3/god), Luksemburg (4,00·10-5
Bq·m-3/god), i Ivalo (1,91·10-5 Bq·m-3/god), a statistički značajan pozitivan trend
povezanost. U budućim analizama ovog problema stoga treba uzeti u obzir duţe
vremenske nizove ovih promenljivih.

Concentrations of six elements (Zr, Nd, Gd, Tm, Yb, and Lu) in mosses in Serbia are measured for the first time. For other elements, the obtained concentrations fall within the ranges reported for mosses and lichens in Europe, but no declining trend in concentrations of V, Cd, Cr, Zn, Ni, Fe, and Cu, that has been described in the literature, can be inferred from our results. Factor analysis shows that terrigenous and industrial components are the highest contributing factors to the elemental composition and that the most polluted measurement site is in the vicinity of a copper mining and smelting complex.

AB - Relationships between the beryllium-7 activity concentrations in surface air and meteorological parameters (temperature, atmospheric pressure, and precipitation), teleconnection indices (Arctic Oscillation, North Atlantic Oscillation, and Scandinavian pattern) and number of sunspots are investigated using two multivariate statistical techniques: hierarchical cluster and factor analysis. The beryllium-7 surface measurements over 1995-2011, at four sampling sites located in the Scandinavian Peninsula, are obtained from the Radioactivity Environmental Monitoring Database. In all sites, the statistical analyses show that the beryllium-7 concentrations are strongly linked to temperature. Although the beryllium-7 surface concentration exhibits the well-characterised spring/summer maximum, our study shows that extremely high beryllium-7 concentrations, defined as the values exceeding the 90th percentile in the data records for each site, also occur over the October-March period. Two types of autumn/winter extremes are distinguished: type-1 when the number of extremes in a given month is less than three, and type-2 when at least three extremes occur in a month. Factor analysis performed for these autumn/winter events shows a weaker effect of temperature and a stronger impact of the transport and production signal on the beryllium-7 concentrations. Further, the majority of the type-2 extremes are associated with a very high monthly Scandinavian teleconnection index. The type-2 extremes that occurred in January, February and March are also linked to sudden stratospheric warmings of the Arctic vortex. Our results indicate that the Scandinavian teleconnection index might be a good indicator of the meteorological conditions facilitating extremely high beryllium-7 surface concentrations over Scandinavia during autumn and winter.

AB - Mineral additives, such as monocalcium phosphate, that are commonly used on pig farms, are obtained by processing phosphate mineral ore, and can contain high levels of 238U. Since ingestion is the main route of radioactive contamination of both animals and humans, the goal of this paper is to measure specific activity of natural and artificial radionuclides in monocalcium phosphate and complete feed mixtures for pigs. Mineral additives with high levels of natural radionuclides can contaminate complete feed mixtures making them unsuitable for use. Samples were collected from three different farms, and in total fifteen samples of monocalcium and forty five samples of complete feed mixture were measured. Samples of monocalcium phosphate show the 238U activity concentration of 13.2-2097Bq/kg. Other naturally occurring radionuclides are measured in monocalcium and the results give: 21.4-25.5 Bq/kg for 40K, 1.5 -12.1 Bq/kg for226Ra, 1.5-2.9 Bq/kg for 232Th, and 1.5-10.8 Bq/kg for 214Bi. These radionuclides are further measured in complete feed mixtures and only one sample shows elevated concentrations of 238U (3.1 Bq/kg) and 226Ra (3.5 Bq/kg). Potassium-40 is detected in all samples, with the specific activity range 208-329 Bq/kg, while other naturally occurring radionuclides and artificial radioceasium are below the detection limits.

AB - To estimate an influence of amunicipal waste landfill on the environment and foodchain, gamma spectrometric analysis of the various environmental samples isconducted. The samples were collected in the village of Vinča, Grocka municipality,Belgrade, Serbia, during 2016, and included the following: soil at a depth of 0–20 cmand 20–40 cm; water samples from wells and the Danube river; fruit samples of apples, pears, peaches and apricots; vegetable samples of onions, carrots, potatoes, cabbagesand corn; products of animal origin used in human diet–eggs, goat milk, goat cheese, pork, pork liver and chicken meat. A content of 40K, 238U, 235U, 226Ra, 214Bi, 232Th, and137Cs in the samples is investigated. The results show concentrations of the naturalradionuclides within the reported ranges for Serbia. The artificial 137Cs is detected inthe soil (7.1–41.1 Bq/kg), but not in any of the other samples from the food chain. Therefore, our results imply that the products of plant and animal origin produced inthe vicinity of the landfill are radiologically safe for human consumption.

AB - The dynamics of the beryllium-7 specific activity in surface air over 1987-2011 is analyzed using wavelet transform (WT) analysis and time -dependent detrended moving average (tdDMA) method, WT analysis gives four periodicities in the beryllium-7 specific activity: one month, three months, one year, and three years. These intervals are further used in tdDMA to calculate local autocorrelation exponents for precipitation, tropopause height and teleconnection indices. Our results show that these parameters share common periods with the beryllium-7 surface concentration. tdDMA method indicates that on the characteristic intervals of one year and shorter, the beryllium-7 specific activity is strongly autocorrelated. On the three-year interval, the beryllium-7 specific activity shows periods of anticorrelat ion, implying slow changes in its dynamics that become evident only over a prolonged period of time. A comparison of the Hurst exponents of all the variables on the one- and three-year intervals suggest some similarities in their dynamics. Overall, a good agreement in the behavior of the teleconnection indices and specific activity of beryllium-7 in surface air is noted.

AB - Seasonal and spatial patterns of extremely high beryllium-7 surface concentration recorded over the 2001-2010 period across Europe are investigated. The beryllium-7 measurements for 14 sites are taken from the Radioactivity Environmental Monitoring Database. The maxima and minima in the annual cycle of the beryllium-7 surface concentration occur later in the year as the latitude of the measurement site decreases. Extremely high beryllium-7 surface concentrations are defined here as values greater than the 95th percentile in each measurement site. Most of the extremes occur over the March-August period. At least 10 % of the total number of extremes appear during autumn and winter, with an exception of Vienna, where all the extremes took place during spring and summer. The regional spread of extremes common to pairs of measurement sites points to an existence of three distinct regions in Europe: north of 55°N, between 45°N and 55°N, and south of 45°N. Although the beryllium-7 concentration records are significantly correlated across all the investigated sites, the strongest correlations are found within the identified regions.

AB - This work presents an overview of the results obtained in
an analysis of the 7Be activity concentrations recorded in
surface air in Helsinki, Finland, over a 25-year period
(1987-2011), and stored in the online Radioactivity
Environmental Monitoring (REM) database.
First, lagged linear correlations of the 7Be specific
activity with several meteorological variables:
tropopause height (TPH); mean, minimum and
maximum temperature; precipitation (Prec); atmospheric
pressure (Press); potential vorticity (PV) at 300 hPa and
200 hPa; solar zenith angle (SZA); and sunspot number
are analysed (Tab. 1). The time lag in the correlation
calculations is allowed to vary between 0 and 7 days for
TPH, meteorological parameters and PV, and between 0
and 31 days for SZA and sunspot number. The
correlations are calculated for the total set of
measurements as well as for different seasons.

surface air in Helsinki, Finland, over a 25-year period
(1987-2011), and stored in the online Radioactivity
Environmental Monitoring (REM) database.
First, lagged linear correlations of the 7Be specific
activity with several meteorological variables:
tropopause height (TPH); mean, minimum and
maximum temperature; precipitation (Prec); atmospheric
pressure (Press); potential vorticity (PV) at 300 hPa and
200 hPa; solar zenith angle (SZA); and sunspot number
are analysed (Tab. 1). The time lag in the correlation
calculations is allowed to vary between 0 and 7 days for
TPH, meteorological parameters and PV, and between 0
and 31 days for SZA and sunspot number. The
correlations are calculated for the total set of
measurements as well as for different seasons.",

AB - An association between the beryllium-7 and lead-210 specific activities in surface airand meteorological parameters is investigated using factor analysis. The measurementswere conducted in Belgrade, Republic of Serbia, and Ljubljana and Krško, Republic ofSlovenia, over 1991–2015. In all the locations, the factor loadings of two factors showthat: 1) the beryllium-7 specific activity is encompassed by factor 1 together withtemperature, cloud cover and relative humidity; while 2) the lead-210 specific activity, precipitation and atmospheric pressure are described by factor 2. Although thecommunalities of only two factors are already larger than 0.5 for most of the variables,an introduction of a third factor raises the communalities of all the variables above 0.5.The results imply that the beryllium-7 and lead-210 are under different dominantunderlying mechanisms. The concentration of beryllium-7 seems to be primarilyinfluenced by a mechanism of a regional character which is also a predominant factorfor temperature. This association between the beryllium-7 specific activity andtemperature prevails even when the number of factors in the analysis is raised to threeand four. The lead-210 specific activity, on the other hand, together with precipitationand atmospheric pressure, is under an influence of a local mechanism, but thatrelationship between the variables ceases to hold when the number of factors is raisedto three, and more than 80% of the variance in the Pb-210 specific activity is explainedby one specific factor.

AB - The specific activity of naturally occurring radionuclides 238U, 235U, 226Ra, 210Pb, 232Th,and 40K and fallout 137Cs was measured in the samples of leaves of two deciduous treespecies, chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) and linden (Tilia spp.) common for theBelgrade urban area. Samples were collected in the spring (n = 7), summer (n = 2) andautumn (n = 8) during the vegetation period from 2002 to 2012. From each season, samples of leaves were combined according to two species and one single integral(seasonal) sample was obtained in order to improve detection efficiency of low gammaradiation level. Specific activities were determined using the gamma-ray spectrometrymethod. 210Pb and 40K radionuclides were detected in all the samples of leaves and theirspecific activity was in the range (Bq/kg dry weight): 15 - 52 and 310 - 650,respectively. Although the 226Ra level was very low and in the range from 0.5 - 5.6Bq/kg, this radionuclide has been measured in all samples (except in the two) and eachseason.210Pb and 226Ra activity increased during the vegetation period and theirhighest values were found in the leaves of chestnut trees in the summer season. Incontrast, the activity of 40K in the leaves of linden and chestnut has decreased.Detection 238U, 235U and 232Th radionuclides was scarce and only in the summer and/orautumn. Four samples of leaves contained 238U (2.7 - 11.7 Bq/kg dry wt) and 235U (0,13- 1.0 Bq/kg dry wt) and three of them 232Th (1.8 - 3.3 Bq/kg dry wt). Man-maderadionuclide 137Cs (0.3-1.2 Bq/kg dry wt) was detected in all samples of leaves (exceptin two) and no clear trend according to seasons was found. The aim was to investigatethe accumulation of naturally occurring radionuclides and fallout 137Cs in the leaves ofdeciduous trees and their potential variations during the vegetation period.

Srbija, a druga od 29. januara do 3. februara 2017. u skijalištu Val Soni, Francuska.
Izlaganje je mereno ličnim monitorima UV zračenja. U Val Soniju, dva monitora merila

izlaganja.
nagiba VT spektra snage signala približno jednaka jedan.
AB - Exposure to solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation is analysed for two groups of skiers. One
group measured UV exposure over 1-7 January 2017 in the StaraPlanina ski resort in
Serbia, while the other performed measurements between 29 January and 3 February
2017 in the Val Cenis ski resort in France. Exposure was measured using personal UV
monitors. In Val Cenis, two monitors recorded ambient UV radiation which is taken as
a reference point for the measured personal exposures. To establish personal patterns
of behaviour and a level of individual exposure to solar UV, wavelet transform (WT) is
used to calculate spectral functions of the obtained data. The results show no significant
difference in the mean levels of group exposure at different locations, as the mean slope
of the WT spectra is approximately one in both cases. This value implies a high UV
exposure which most likely results from prolonged periods of time spent in the sun. On
the other hand, the individual slopes of the WT spectral functions range between
(0.50±0.02) and (1.44±0.02), and thusindicate personal differences in behavioural
patterns of the skiers. Further, the WT spectral functions show characteristic peaks that
demonstrate the duration of the total continual individual UV exposure in skiers, and
this result could be used in future assessments and recommendations for modification of
personal behaviour in the sun.

AB - To evaluate the state of the environment in Kopaonik, a mountain in Serbia, the activity concentrations of (4) K, Ra-226, Th-232 and Cs-137 in five different types of environmental samples are determined by gamma ray spectrometry, and radiological hazard due to terrestrial radionuclides is calculated. The mean activity concentrations of natural radionuclides in the soil are higher than the global average. However, with an exception of two sampling locations, the external radiation hazard index is below one, implying an insignificant radiation hazard. Apart from K-40, content of the natural radionuclides is predominantly below minimum detectable activities in grass and cow milk, but not in mosses. Although Cs-137 is present in the soil, grass, mosses and herbal plants, its specific activity in cow milk is below minimum detectable activity. Amongst the investigated herbal plants, Vaccinium myrtillus L. shows accumulating properties, as a high content of Cs-137 is detected therein. Therefore, moderation is advised in consuming Vaccinium myrtillus L. tea.

mosses, mushrooms and game meat (wild rabbit, pheasant and wild boar) are measured by the gamma spectrometry
technique. The samples were collected in suburban areas of Belgrade, Serbia, in the period from 2008–2014. The
mean activity concentrations of 40K, 238U and 232Th in cultivated soil аre 637 Bqkg-1, 52 Bqkg-1 and 53 Bqkg-1, and in
uncultivated soil 608 Bqkg-1, 58 Bqkg-1 and 55 Bqkg-1, respectively. An artificial radionuclide 137Cs is detected in the
samples of soil, mosses and mushrooms, which indicates that almost 30 years after the nuclear accident in Chernobyl,
137Cs is still present in the environment. Since the activity concentrations of primordial radionuclides and 137Cs in
game meat are below detection limit, these samples can be classified as safe for consumption.

Specifična aktivnost 137Cs u zemlji, travi, senu, mleku, mlečnimproizvodima, mesu i biljnim čajevima određena je standardnom metodom spektrometrijegama zračenja na poluprovodničkim detektorima. AB - This analysis presents linear correlations of beryllium-7 specific activity in surface air with several variables measured in Helsinki, Finland, over 1987-2011. Measurements of beryllium-7 are linearly correlated with the following 10 variables: tropopause height; mean, minimum and maximum temperature; precipitation; atmospheric pressure; potential vorticity at 300 hPa and 200 hPa; solar zenith angle; and the number of sunspots. A time lag is also introduced into the calculations of Pearsons linear correlation coefficients, i.e. the beryllium-7 specific activity measured on a day is correlated with a value of a given variable measured on some preceding day. In particular, the time lag is allowed to vary between 0 and 7 days for tropopause height, meteorological parameters and potential vorticity, and between 0 and 31 days for solar zenith angle and number of sunspots. In this way, we obtain sets of correlation coefficients for each pair of the analysed variables, in which we look for the maximum correlation coefficient as well as for the time lag on which this value is reached. In addition to investigating all of the available measurements, the time series are further split into seasonal subsets. Weak to moderate maximum correlation coefficients, ranging between 0.29 and 0.44, are found for the beryllium-7 specific activity with the tropopause height, temperatures and atmospheric pressure. These correlations are reached with a time lag of 0-2 days. Seasonal correlation coefficients show that the strongest linear relationships are obtained in summer. Similarly, a moderate correlation (0.48) with the solar zenith angle is reached with a time lag of 0 days, but the seasonal correlation coefficients in this case show a weaker relationship during different seasons. On the other hand, our analysis suggests that the correlations of beryllium-7 with precipitation, potential vorticity and the number of sunspots are not statistically significant.

abstract = "This analysis presents linear correlations of beryllium-7 specific activity in surface air with several variables measured in Helsinki, Finland, over 1987-2011. AB - We present an analysis of the maxima in a large dataset of the beryllium-7 specific activities measured in
surface air in Helsinki, Finland, over 25 years (1987-2011), which are stored in the online Radioactivity
Environmental Monitoring (REM) database. The maxima are defined as events with the beryllium-7 specific activity
above the 95th percentile, which, for the Helsinki data set, equals to 4.8210-3 Bqm-3. The beryllium-7 specific activity
in Helsinki shows a seasonal pattern with the monthly means above 2.0010-3 Bqm-3 during the warm season (April–
September), and below 2.0010-3 Bqm-3 during the cold season (October–March). The analysis of the extremes shows
that 10 % occurred in the cold season, and these “cold extremes” are analysed in more detail. Amongst the cold
extremes, three representative “episodes” are identified. The episodes, which occurred in March 1999, February 2003
and February 2005, show extremely high beryllium-7 specific activities measured over several consecutive days.
Anomalies of potential vorticity, sea level pressure and surface temperature, as well as precipitation, over Europe
and the Atlantic are investigated. A brief analysis of one cold extreme, classified as “burst” since it was an isolated
event surrounded by measurements below the 95th percentile, is also presented in an attempt to find common
mechanisms that contribute to both cold extreme episodes and bursts. Scandinavia teleconnection index seems to
represent a good indicator of potentially preferential atmospheric conditions that could lead to cold extreme episode
occurrences in the Scandinavian region.

Be in surface air generally shows a spring-summer maximum. However,
extremely high 7
Be concentrations in surface air also occur during winter. The aim of our analysis is to
characterise temporal and spatial prevalence of winter extreme events, and to investigate the associated
synoptic meteorological conditions in northern Europe. Four measurement sites, with an approximate weekly
sampling rate over the 2001–2010 period, are selected from the online Radioactivity Environmental
Monitoring (REM) Database. The extremes in the 7
Be surface concentration are defined as measurements
above the 90th percentile in each location. The results indicate that at each measurement site, 10–20 % of the
extremes occur during winter (November, December, January and February). Two types of 7
Be extremes are
distinguished: 1) approximately half of these occurrences are isolated events detected in one or two stations,
and 2) the other half are events grouped within four months, when at least three 7
Be extremes per month are
observed. The monthly Scandinavia (SCAND) teleconnection index for isolated extreme events (type-1) is
positive and, with only one exception, larger than 0.4, while in the case of type-2 events, the monthly
SCAND is very high (larger than 1).This finding implies that in northern Europe during winter, the
atmospheric conditions associated with a high SCAND index facilitate an occurrence of extreme 7
Be surface
concentration.

AB - This study aims at analysing the latitudinal variability of both the yearly and seasonal pattern of Be-7 surface activity concentrations, at addressing the impact of tropopause height (TPH) on Be-7 distribution and at evaluating the time lag between TPH and Be-7 at European level. With this aim, weekly Be-7 and daily TPH data at 17 sampling stations during 10 yr (2001-2010) are analysed. Be-7 shows a clear increasing tendency in the period and generally tends to increase with decreasing latitude. The seasonal pattern generally shows maxima during the warm period and minima during the cold one. The seasonal variogram analysis points out a good spatial correlation for TPH data while a weaker one is observed for Be-7, having TPH a larger influence on Be-7 during summer. The influence of TPH on Be-7 exhibits a large spatial variability, with a clear gap between south and north in the area of the polar front jet. The results identify the presence of two main groups, in particular separating between stations located in northern Europe (50 degrees N and higher) and stations in southern Europe (south of 50 degrees N). A similar behaviour for stations located in the same geographical area is also observed when looking at the day of maximum impact of TPH on Be-7 concentrations. The results suggest that Be-7 concentrations respond in different time ranges to changes in the TPH, observing seasonal differences in each group. These results represent the first European approach to the understanding of the TPH impact on Be-7 concentrations at surface levels.

AB - Personal sun exposure measurements provide important information to guide the development of sun awareness and disease prevention campaigns. We assess the scaling properties of personal ultraviolet radiation (pUVR) sun exposure measurements using the wavelet transform (WT) spectral analysis to process long-range, high-frequency personal recordings collected by electronic UVR dosimeters designed to measure erythemal UVR exposure. We analysed the sun exposure recordings of school children, farmers, marathon runners and outdoor workers in South Africa, and construction workers and work site supervisors in New Zealand. We found scaling behaviour in all the analysed pUVR data sets. We found that the observed scaling changes from uncorrelated to long-range correlated with increasing duration of sun exposure. Peaks in the WT spectra that we found suggest the existence of characteristic times in sun exposure behaviour that were to some extent universal across our data set. Our study also showed that WT measures enable group classification, as well as distinction between individual UVR exposures, otherwise unattainable by conventional statistical methods.
