AB - The dairy industry contributes significantly to anthropogenic methane emissions, which
have an impact on global warming. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a dietary inclusion of brown seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum on enteric methane emissions (EMEs), hematological and blood biochemical profiles, and milk composition in dairy cows. Eighteen Holstein cows were divided into three groups: CON (non-supplemented cows), BS50 (50 mL of 10% A. nodosum), and BS100 (100 mL of 10% A. nodosum). In each cow, measurements of EME, dry matter intake (DMI), and milk yield (MY), as well as blood and milk sampling with respective analyzes, were performed before supplementation (P1), after 15 (P2) days, and after 30 (P3) days of supplementation. A. nodosum reduced (p < 0.05) methane production, methane yield, and methane intensity in both BS50 and BS100, and raised DMI (p < 0.05) only in BS50. Total bilirubin (p < 0.05) was higher in BS50 compared to CON cows in P2, and triacylglycerols were lower (p < 0.05) in BS50 than in CON cows in P3. Higher milk fat content was found in BS50 than in CON cows in P3. C16:0 proportions were higher (p < 0.05) in BS50 and BS100 than in CON cows, while C18:3n-3 was higher (p < 0.05) in BS100 than in BS50 and CON cows in P3. Dietary treatment with A. nodosum reduced EMEs and showed the potential to increase DMI and to improve energy status as well as milk composition in peaklactating dairy cows.

AB - In broilers during the growth stage, adaptive changes in antioxidant status occur.
Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) is one of the enzymes that protect cells from
oxidative stress, and malondialdehyde (MDA) is formed during the peroxidation
of cell membrane phospholipids and is a reliable indicator of the degree of
oxidative damage.
The aim of this work was to determine changes in GPx activity and MDA
concentration during the first 4 weeks of growth (1st, 14th and 28th day), as well
as the effects of dietary supplementation with alpha-tocopherol (100 IU/kg feed)
on the above parameters.
The experiment was conducted on broiler chickens aged from 1 day to 28 days of
fattening. The chicks were divided into 2 experimental groups. The first i.e.
control group (n=10) was fed a standard mixture that meets the needs, while the
second experimental group (n=10) received the same mixture with the addition
of 100 IU/kg of feed alpha-tocopherol. On the indicated days, samples of
heparinized blood were taken by puncture of the wing vein, from which blood
plasma was separated within 2 hours, in which GPx and MDA were determined.
GPx was measured by the coupled test (Gunzler et al. 1974). The test is based on
the spectrophotometric registration of NADPH consumption in the coupled
enzyme system. Malondialdehyde (MDA) was determined based on
spectrophotometric light absorption of the resulting stable pink solution, using
the method described by Andreeva, 1988.
The average values obtained for GPx ranged from 21.46 to 38.55 µkat/l. The lowest
average values were recorded on the 14th day of fattening, while the highest
average values were recorded on the 28th day. However, GPx activity values were
not statistically significantly different (p>0.05), neither between the control
group and the group supplemented with alpha-tocopherol, nor when comparing
the groups during the observed time period. MDA values were the lowest on day
14, where the control group had significantly (p<0.01) higher MDA values
compared to the group supplemented with alpha-tocopherol. A significant
increase in the concentration of MDA in broiler plasma was recorded on the 28th
day of fattening, where the concentration values in both groups were almost
tripled. The non-supplemented group had significantly higher values (p<0.05) of
MDA concentration compared to the supplemented group.
The results indicate that during the first 4 weeks of fattening, there are significant
changes in the indicators of antioxidant protection and the level of peroxidation of membrane phospholipids. The effect of supplemented alpha-tocopherol is
significant from the point of view of reducing the concentration of MDA in
plasma.

metabolički aktivnih mikroorganizama. Među značajnim metabolitima mikrobioma posebno se
ističu masne kiseline kratkih lanaca (SCFA), sekundarne žučne kiseline, poliamini i indol, zajedno

mleka. Najveći izazov u tom smislu predstavlja peripartalni period koji obuhvata tri nedelje pre i tri nedelje posle partusa. Tada se u organizmu krave dešavaju velike hormonske, metaboličke i imunološke
promene.
njihovoj pojavi. Osim navedenih poremećaja, zaostajanje posteljice i
AB - In intensive production, dairy cows are expected to make the most of their genetic
potential and maximize milk yield. The biggest challenge in this regard is the peripartal
period, which includes three weeks before and three weeks after parturition. In that interval
major hormonal, metabolic and immune changes occur in the cow’s body. Many metabolic
disorders that are characteristic of this period are the result of an unbalanced diet and
improper preparation of the individual to enter intensive lactation. Fatty liver, ketosis,
dislocation of the abomasum, and puerperal paresis are the main disorders which are
characteristic of this period, and oxidative stress can play a major role in their occurrence.
In addition to these disorders, retained placenta and mastitis may also be related to
oxidative stress. In this paper, we will analyze the data from our research and the available literature, and try to explain the role of oxidative stress in the peripartal period, with special
emphasis on the use of antioxidants in the prevention of the occurrence or consequences
of metabolic disorders.

AB - Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) is an enzyme that has 8 isoenzyme forms, of which
GPx-1 is an obligatory intracellular enzyme, while GPx-3 is active in extracellular
fluids, especially in blood plasma. The main role of GPx is the protection of cells
from oxidative stress induced by free oxygen radicals. GPx activity is taken as a
reliable indicator of selenium status in the human and animal organism. Selenium
is introduced in organism mainly through the food chain. Ingested selenium is
incorporated in the form of selenomethionine and selenocysteine into tissue
proteins, i.e. enzymes. Detailed investigation related to the content of selenium in
feed and domestic animals were carried out in Serbia, especially in economically
significant species such as poultry, pigs, sheep and cattle. However, working coldblooded
horses, especially those that are fed exclusively with locally grown feed,
or are on pasture, have not been examined in detail so far. Due to their specific
way of breeding, they are ideal indicators of the selenium status of monogastric
herbivores in a given locality.
The goal of our study was to determine the status of selenium based on the
activity of GPx-1 and GPx-3 in blood samples of non-supplemented working
horses in the territory of central Serbia.
In our study, a total of 12 samples of horse blood taken from the localities of the
municipalities of Kraljevo, Zaječar, Valjevo and Dimitrovgrad were tested as
follows: 12 samples of blood plasma and 12 samples of washed erythrocytes.
Measurement of GPx-3 and GPx-1 activity was carried out using the Guncler
method at a wavelength of 366 nm. For each animal, during sampling, data on
gender, age, vaccination and deworming, composition and origin of the given
nutrients were recorded. The average activity of GPx-1 was 502.02 ± 91.77 μKat/l, and GPx-3 3.46 ± 1.02
μKat/l, which indicates the existence of a marginal selenium deficit in the
population of unsupplemented working horses in the territory of central Serbia.

hormona i adekvatnom imunskom odgovoru. Poseban izazov u intenzivnoj
sistema. Selen je, pored ostalih mikroelemenata, izuzetno važan u tom smislu.
On kao gradivni element proteina i enzima utiče na gotovo sve segmente imunskog
sistema (urođeni i stečeni, celularni i humoralni).
aminokiselina i neorganskog selena vrlo razlikuju.

AB - The aim of the study was to determine the stability of the activity of glutathione peroxidases 1 and 3 during storage at +4°C and -18°C. Blood samples were taken from eight sheep and the activity of the enzyme was determined in the plasma (GPx3) and erythrocytes (GPx1) on the first, third, fifth and seventh day in samples stored at +4°C and after one and three months in samples stored at -18°C. GPx3 activity decreased significantly during storage at both temperatures, while GPx1 remained steady even after three months of storage at -18°C. Obtained results indicate that GPx3 activity has to be determined in fresh sheep plasma samples, while the activity of sheep erythrocyte GPx1 can be determined even after 3 months of storage at -18°C.

AB - The present study was conducted to assess effects of selenium (Se)-yeast supplementation on glutathione peroxidase activity, Se levels in tissues, growth performance, carcass, and meat composition in broilers. A total of 275 one-d-old Cobb 500 broilers of both sexes were randomly allotted to 1 of 5 treatments during a 42-d period. The 5 treatments differed only in Se content: group 1 had no additional Se (background only); groups 2, 3, and 4 received 0.3 mg/kg of added Se from the beginning of the trial until d 21, whereas in the second half of the study (from d 22 to 42), these groups received 0.3, 0.6, and 0.9 mg/kg of added Se, respectively; and group 5 received 0.9 mg/kg of Se for the entire experimental period. At the end of the study, the control group showed significantly lower (P < 0.01) glutathione peroxidase activity in blood plasma compared to Se-supplemented groups. Regarding Se concentration in various tissues, the groups receiving Se yeast showed higher plasma, feces, and meat Se contents than the control group (P < 0.01). Supplementation of Se improved broilers body weight, weight gain and feed conversion ratio (P < 0.01). Dressing percentage was lower in the control group and the group with 0.3 mg/kg of added Se compared to other experimental groups (0.6 and 0.9 mg/kg of dietary Se). The proportion of less valuable carcass parts (wings and legs) was higher (P < 0.01) in the group fed the basal diet compared to groups supplemented with 0.9 mg/kg of Se. Initial and ultimate pH values differed among experimental groups (P < 0.05). Supplementation of Se improved the broilers antioxidative resistance, growth performance, carcass quality, and chemical composition of meat.

Do skoro
polu, identitetu, populaciji i poreklu.
razmotriti razne mogućnosti primene feromona i u živinarskoj proizvodnji.

AB - Early embryonic development may be negatively affected by insufficient progesterone (P4) production. Therefore, the aim of our study was to increase P4 by gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and/or human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) treatments after inducing oestrus by prostaglandin (PG) treatment. Lactating Simmental dairy cows (n = 110), between 1 to 5 lactations, with an average milk production of 6,500 l/305 days, at 40-80 days postpartum were used and grouped as follows: (1) PG + GnRH treatment at AI (GnRH group), (2) PG + hCG treatment at day 7 after AI (hCG group), (3) PG + GnRH at AI + hCG treatment at day 7 after AI (GnRH/hCG group), and (4) spontaneous oestrus (C: control group). All animals were double inseminated (at the time of oestrus detection and 12 +/- 2 h thereafter). Blood serum and milk samples were collected at the day of observed oestrus (day 0), and 14, 21 and 28 days after AI. Serum P4 was determined using a commercial radioimmunoassay (RIA) test (INEP, Zemun), and milk P4 was determined using enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) test (NIV Novi Sad). Pregnancy status was confirmed by ultrasonography between days 28 and 35 after AI. Differences of serum or milk P4 medians, pregnancy (and calving) rate were determined using Dunns Multiple Comparison Tests and Z test, respectively. Serum P4 medians were significantly higher at days 14, 21 and 28 after AI in the hCG-treated animals, indicating increased luteal activity, with a similar tendency in whole milk P4 values. Treatment with hCG during the early luteal phase significantly contributed to the maintenance of gestation at days 28-35 after AI, and also increased the calving rate in Simmental dairy cows.

AB - Both selenium, as an effector and regulator of antioxidative enzymes activity, and thyroid hormones are potent immunomodulators. Besides, selenium incorporated into iodothyronine deiodinases is involved in the thyroid function and thus indirectly regulates the immune response. Studies of the mutual infl uence of selenium and thyroid hormones on the immune response are scarce, hence we analyzed the effects of an iodothyronine deiodinases blocker, propylthiouracil (PTU), and selenium defi ciency on the function of peritoneal macrophages, and titer of naturally occurring anti-sheep red blood cells (SRBC) IgM antibodies in juvenile rats. The experiment was carried out on 64 Wistar male rats allotted to 4 groups: controlselenium adequate PTU-group; selenium adequate, PTU+ group; selenium defi cient, PTU-group; and selenium defi cient, PTU+. The selenium adequate and selenium defi cient groups were fed a diet containing 0.334 and 0.031 mg Se/kg, respectively. PTU+ groups received PTU (150 mg/L) in drinking water. After 3 weeks, thyroxine (T-4), triiodothyronine (T-3), and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) were determined. The animals having intermediate concentrations of T-3 (1.56-1.69 nmol/L) and T 4 (41-50 nmol/L) were excluded from further analysis. Thus, PTU+ groups included hypothyroid animals (T-3 <= 1.55 nmol/L; T-4 <= 40 nmol/L), while PTU-groups included euthyroid rats (T-3 <= 1.70 nmol/L; T-4 <= 50 nmol/L). Both groups of selenium defi cient rats had, when compared to the control group, a signifi cantly lower activity of glutathione peroxidase GPx1 and GPx3. Neither selenium defi ciency nor PTU infl uenced the adherence of peritoneal macrophages. Selenium defi ciency signifi cantly decreased the peroxide synthesis in macrophages and signifi cantly increased the titer of anti-SRBC IgM. Hypotyroidism alone or in combination with selenium defi ciency had no infl uence on these parameters.

The experiment was carried out on 64 Wistar male rats allotted to 4 groups: controlselenium adequate PTU-group; selenium adequate, PTU+ group; selenium defi cient, PTU-group; and selenium defi cient, PTU+. The selenium adequate and selenium defi cient groups were fed a diet containing 0.334 and 0.031 mg Se/kg, respectively. PTU+ groups received PTU (150 mg/L) in drinking water. After 3 weeks, thyroxine (T-4), triiodothyronine (T-3), and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) were determined. The animals having intermediate concentrations of T-3 (1.56-1.69 nmol/L) and T 4 (41-50 nmol/L) were excluded from further analysis. Thus, PTU+ groups included hypothyroid animals (T-3 <= 1.55 nmol/L; T-4 <= 40 nmol/L), while PTU-groups included euthyroid rats (T-3 <= 1.70 nmol/L; T-4 <= 50 nmol/L). Both groups of selenium defi cient rats had, when compared to the control group, a signifi cantly lower activity of glutathione peroxidase GPx1 and GPx3. Neither selenium defi ciency nor PTU infl uenced the adherence of peritoneal macrophages. Selenium defi ciency signifi cantly decreased the peroxide synthesis in macrophages and signifi cantly increased the titer of anti-SRBC IgM. Hypotyroidism alone or in combination with selenium defi ciency had no infl uence on these parameters.",

AB - The aim of this investigation was to determine the influence of oxidative stress upon general stress in dairy cows on parturition and whether the indicators of stress can be reduced by selenium (Se) supplementation. A total of 36 animals were divided into 3 groups 21 days prepartum and treated with a single-term intra muscular supplement of sodium selenite: Control group - 0 mg; group Se10 - 10 mg; group Se20 - 20 mg. Se supplementation significantly raised blood Se content and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity in groups Se10 and Se20, compared to Control, although there was no marked difference between supplemented groups. Plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) and cortisol concentrations were significantly reduced in supplemented groups Se10 and Se20, compared to Control. A negative correlation was detected between blood GPx activity and plasma MDA, while a positive correlation was determined between plasma MDA and cortisol concentrations. These results indicate that prepartum Se supplementation can be utilized for a partial relief of stress in cows during labor by augmenting the antioxidative action of GPx.

AB - Selenium is an essential trace element with multi significant role in the body. In contrast to other trace elements that appear as cofactors of certain enzymes, its physiological role is directly related to functions of proteins in composition of which it is cotranslationally installed by atypical amino acid selenocysteine. The group of proteins, in which composition selenocysteine is an integral functional part of polypeptides, are referred to as selenoproteins. The first enzyme that has been proven to have selenocysteine incorporated in its composition, is glutathione peroxidase (GPx). So far there have been identified 5 isoenzyme forms of GPx which reduce hydrogen peroxide and organic hydroperoxides, protecting cells from oxidative damage. Iodothyronine deiodinases (ID) are among the most important selenopoteins, being responsible for both activation and deactivation of thyroid hormones. So far there have been found over twenty selenoproteins, but only for some of them a physiological role is known.

AB - Fertiliy rate in high milk-yield dairy cows, with prolonged postpartum anestrus, was investigated after treatment by Ovsynch protocol. Thirty cows with follicular cysts or unovulated follicles (around 1.2 cm in diameter), without detected estrus up to 60 days post partum, were treated by Ovsynch protocol. The date of the first GnRH injection was defined as day 0. On day 6. was given prostaglandin F2α (PGF2a) and second GnRH injection 48 h after PGF2 α (day 8). All treated cows were terminally inseminated at day 9 (without estrus detection), i.e. 12-14 h after the last GnRH injection. The blood serum progesterone concentration was determined by ELISA method, in blood samples taken from v. jugularis, at the day of AI.The blood serum concentration of progesterone on the day of AI was low in Ovsynch treated (1.8 ng/mL) and in control cows (1.5 ng/mL). Obtainedcalving rate was not significant different between treated and control cows (57:60%, respectively, p > 0.05). Our results show that Ovsynch protocol treatment can be a successful method for control of prolonged postpartum anestrus in high milk-yield cows.

AB - In this work there was investigated the influence of selenium and deodinases blockers on juvenile rats body weight during three months. The experiment was carried out on 64 rats divided into eight groups with eight individual animals per group. Following groups were formed: 1. Se+PTU-IA- (control group), 2. Se+PTU+IA+, 3. Se+PTU+IA-, 4. Se+P-TU-IA+, 5. Se-PTU-IA-, 6. Se-PTU+IA+, 7. Se-PTU+IA- and 8. Se-PTU-IA+. The groups labeled (Se+) were selenium adequate and they were fed with food that contained 0.334 mg Se/kg. The groups labeled (Se-) were selenium deficient and obtained food with 0.031 mg Se/kg. As deiodinases blockers there were used propylthiouracil (PTU+) in a dose of 150 mg/L of drinking water and iopanoic acid (IA+) in a dose of 6 mg/100 g TM intraperitoneally. Body weight of experimental rats was measured every seven days. After three weeks of treatment there were taken blood samples of animals from all experimental groups and following parameters were determined: selenium concentration in blood, thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroidstimulating hormone (TSH) in blood plasma. Analysis of the samples showed that the animals from the groups treated with PTU had lower body weight in regard to the control group, as well as lower concentration of T3 and T4 in plasma. Selenium deficient rats had lower average body weight compared to the selenium adequate ones after three weeks, but there were no differences in thyroid hormones concentration. The lowest average body weight was noticed in selenium deficient rats groups treated with PTU.
Se-PTU-IA-, 6. Se-PTU+IA+, 7. Se-PTU+IA- i 8. Se-PTU-IA+.

AB - The aim of this study was to determine how dietary supplementation of inorganic and organic selenium affects the selenium concentration and glutathione peroxidase activity in blood and sperm of sexually mature stud boars. Twenty-four boars of the Large White, Landrace, Pietrain and Duroc breeds of optimal breeding age (on average 2.5 years old) were used. The study lasted 90 days. The boars were randomly assigned to one of three dietary treatment groups: T1 = control; no added selenium (n = 8 boars), T2 = added 0.3 ppm inorganic selenium (sodium selenite, Microgran (R) Se 1% BMP) (n = 8 boars), and T3 = added 0.3 ppm organic selenium (Se-yeast, Sel-Plex 2000 (R)) (n = 8 boars). The concentration of selenium was determined in whole blood and semen, while the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) was measured in blood plasma and semen. In order to measure GPx activity in semen, reactivation of the enzymatic GPx activity was performed. The determined selenium concentration in blood was lowest in the non-supplemented group of boars. Blood plasma GPx activity was higher in boars fed organic selenium than in boars fed a diet without supplemented selenium. While the supplementation of sodium selenite significantly increased GPx activity in boar semen. The highest-concentration of selenium in semen at the end of the trial was determined in the group of boars supplemented with organic selenium, somewhat lower in boars fed supplemented inorganic selenium, and the lowest in the non-supplemented group of boars. The only significant difference between the selenite and Se-yeast diet supplementation was observed in the Se concentration of the semen. The supplementation of selenium affected semen quality, and organic selenium improved the progressive motility of the spermatozoa and increased their resistance in hypo-osmotic and thermal tests. The storage ability of short term preserved semen was improved by organic selenium supplementation, as well as also increasing the fertility rate in gilts.

AB - The incidence of retained placenta (RP) in cows increases in cases of parturition induced by prostaglandin F2α. We analyzed the effects of different doses of supplemental selenium and vitamin E on the incidence of RP, blood selenium, plasma thyronines, and malondialdehyde concentration. Thirty-three clinically healthy, multiparous Holstein-Frisian cows were assigned to 3 groups and supplemented with a single intramuscular injection of sodium selenite (SS) and tocopherol acetate (TAc) between days 250 to 255 of gestation: control—unsupplemented; group A—10 mg SS + 400 mg TAc; group B—20 mg SS + 800 mg TAc. Parturition was induced using PGF2α not before day 275 of gestation. The RP incidence was reduced from 66.7% in the control to 38.2 and 30.8% in groups A and B, respectively. Blood selenium and glutathione peroxidase activity in treated groups were significantly higher compared to control, with no significant difference between groups A and B. Plasma malondialdehyde in group B was significantly lower than that in control and group A, while thyronines levels were not affected. Comparison of RP and non-RP cows, independently of supplement treatment, revealed higher blood selenium and glutathione peroxidase activity and lower MDA and thyroxine in non-RP animals, while triiodothyronine level did not differ.

AB - A total of 221 feedstuff samples (187 grain samples and 34 hay samples) were collected from 13 different locations on the territory of the Republic of Serbia. The results expressed as μg/kg have shown an average selenium content in grain samples of 34.3 ± 17.1 and 53.8 ± 18.7 in hay samples. However, a distinct difference was noted between samples collected from the locations north of the river Danube (52.8 ± 20.0 and 73.4 ± 21.3 for grain and hay samples, respectively) compared to the locations south of the Danube (23.3 ±15.4 and 41.7 ± 17.1 for grain and hay samples, respectively). GPx activity was measured in a total of 58 blood plasma samples collected from ewes grazing on 5 different locations. The average GPx activity was 157.4 ± 61.9 μkat/L and it followed a pattern similar to the distribution of Se in feedstuffs. GPx activity was higher in samples collected north of the Danube (212.8 ± 91.2 μkat/L), compared to ewes south of the Danube (66.9 ± 14.0 μkat/L). According to the obtained results and literature data Serbia can be described as a selenium deficient area, showing a marked deficiency on the locations south of the Danube.

abstract = "A total of 221 feedstuff samples (187 grain samples and 34 hay samples) were collected from 13 different locations on the territory of the Republic of Serbia. According to the obtained results and literature data Serbia can be described as a selenium deficient area, showing a marked deficiency on the locations south of the Danube., Ispitano je ukupno 221 uzoraka biljnih hraniva (187 žitarica i 34 uzoraka sena) sakupljenih sa različitih lokacija na području 15 opština Republike Srbije. .",

AB - Reproduction efficiency in dairy cows is declining all over the world. Epidemiologic studies suggest that diseases have greater effect on herd fertility compared to the parameters like milk production. Immediate solution to the problem of infertility may be the application of some method of hormonal manipulation of estrous cycle in dairy cows. Reproductive system ultrasound examination enables today's veterinarians to visualize ovarian changes during the estrous cycle, giving them a chance to intervene with exogenous hormonal inhibition and/or stimulation of temporary ovarian structures at the appropriate time. Summarizing possible hormonal methods for estrous cycle manipulation we have analyzed following protocols: prostaglandin based protocols, prostaglandin + progestagensin combination, regimes using prostaglandin + gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and prostaglandin + GnRH + estradiol protocols. In dairy herds where estrus detection does not represent a significant problem, prostaglandin based or Select Synch protocols are methods of choice for the hormonal manipulation of estrous cycle. However, if there are problems regarding estrus detection Ovsynch or Presynch + Ovsynch could be an effective alternative for the hormonal manipulation of estrous cycle. Furthermore, fixed time artificial insemination (TAI) could be modified to coincide with the second GnRH injection, thus reducing the time and number of visits. .

AB - The time close to calving in dairy cows is considered as the most sensitive period from more aspects, among which most relevant are the metabolic shift due to lactation and subsequently increased oxidative stress. Besides, PGF2 induction of delivery additionally increases the incidence of retained placenta. The oxidative stress defense mechanisms consist of nonenzymatic molecules (vitamins C and E, glutathione) and enzymes: superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase.
The selenoenzyme glutathione peroxidase reduces the formed fatty acids hydroperoxides, thus interruptting the chain reaction of damage to the cell membrane lipids. Malondialdehyde (MDA), formed by nonenzymatic fission can cross link to other biological molecules which results in cytotoxicity and mutations. The concentration of MDA in blood plasma is a good indicator of the degree of oxidative damage in the organism.
The aim of this study was to determine changes in MDA concentration in the blood plasma during calving and in the peripartal period, 12h before and after calving, as well as the success rate in the expulsion of the placenta in cows with prostaglandin induced delivery.
The experiment was done on dairy Holstein Friesian cows allotted into 3 groups: 1) not supplemented control group (n=9), 2) group treated with 20 mL (n=11) and 3) with 40 mL (n=13) Promtselen® 30 days before calving. MDA plasma concentration was measured spectrophotometrically.
Plasma MDA concentrations in cows supplemented with 20 mL Promtselen® 12h before calving were (4.59 ± 1.20), at calving (4.44 ± 0.68) and 12h after delivery (4.67 ± 0.80), were significantly lower compared to the control group. The group treated with 40 mL Promtselen® had the lowest MDA results of all groups at 12h after calving. Treatments with 20 mL and 40 mL Promtselen® resulted in a significant decrease in placenta retention (38.2% and 30.8%) compared with the control group (66.67%).
It can be concluded that application of 20 and 40 mL Promtselen® 30 days before induction of calving resulted in a statistically significant reduction of plasma MDA concentrations during the peripartal period, as well as with a significant reduction in retained placenta.

Možemo zaključiti da aplikacija 20 ml i 40 ml Promtselena 30 dana pre indukcije porođaja rezultira statistički značajnim smanjenjem MDA u plazmi tokom peripartalnog perioda, kao i značajnim smanjenjem učestalosti zaostajanja posteljice., The time close to calving in dairy cows is considered as the most sensitive period from more aspects, among which most relevant are the metabolic shift due to lactation and subsequently increased oxidative stress.
It can be concluded that application of 20 and 40 mL Promtselen® 30 days before induction of calving resulted in a statistically significant reduction of plasma MDA concentrations during the peripartal period, as well as with a significant reduction in retained placenta.",
