AB - Hippopotamidae family is nowadays represented by two species within two different genera: pygmy hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis) and common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius). The common hippopotamus has a very unique anatomy, and the shape of the body, especially the head is adapted for a semi-aquatic life style. The morphological examination and description of the gross anatomical features of the hippopotamus skull is described in this paper. The shape of the skull is adapted for the amphibian way of life. Their eyes, ears and nostrils are placed high on the roof of the skull which allows these organs to remain above the surface of the water while the animal is being submerged underwater. The skull is massive, but the brain case (neurocranium) is extremely small compared with the splanchnocranium and complete head. The dental formula of the common hippopotamus is: incisors (I) 2/2, canines

AB - The aim of this work was to study the topography, morphology, vascularisation, histology and innervation of the lungs in the ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus) and compare these data with those concerning the rat, mole rat, rabbit and mouse. The research was carried out on 15 animals. It was revealed that the right lung has four lobes (cranial, middle, caudal and accessory lobes), while the left lung is not divided into segments. The functional vessels are a. pulmonalis dextra et sinistra and vv. pulmonales (5-6), while the nutritive vessels of the lungs are a. bronchoesophagea dextra and v. bronchoesophagea dextra. Histological tissue sections of the lungs revealed that the wall of terminal bronchioles contains no cartilage and the mucosal epithelium is pseudostratified, cubic and ciliated. Clara cells (club cells, bronchiolar exocrine cells) are present but have no cilia. The lung alveolar diameter is 37 mu m on average, and the thickness of the alveolar wall and the interalveolar septa is 1.38 mu m. Destruction of the alveolar walls, accumulation of erythrocytes in the capillaries of alveolar septa and destruction of the cytolemma of the capillary endothelium were detected. In addition, connective tissue fibres and peripheral nerves were detected by silver impregnation.

AB - Morphometric parameters of the lateral ventricle choroid plexus epithelial cells (average area, perimeter, bounding rectangle area, average nuclear area, nuclear perimeter, nuclear circularity and average nucleocytoplasmic ratio) were studied in postnatal and juvenile (10th, 16th and 38th postnatal days) 15 male and 15 female rats. The results were statistically analyzed by factorial ANOVA.
AB - Morfometrijski parametri (prosečna površina, obim, površina najmanjeg opisanog četvorougla, prosečna površina nukleusa, obim nukleusa, zaokrugljenost nukleusa i prosečni nukleocitoplazmatski odnos) epitelnih ćelija Plexus choroideus- a lateralnih komora ispitani su na 15 mužjaka i 15 ženki pacova u neonatalnom i juvenilnom periodu (10., 16. i 38. postnatalni dan).

AB - Polymethylmetacrylate (PMMA) is an artificial resin that has a wide application in a number of medical disciplines, surgery included. The use of acrylate is limited due to its modest mechanical features. Hence in this study, as an 'in vivo' experiment on dogs, the usefulness of 'reinforced acrylate' in the form of armored acrylate plates in the surgery of fractured ribs in flail chest has been valued. In earlier studies we have shown that polymethylmetacrylate, when reinforced with non-alkaline glass fibers, has improved mechanical characteristics (bending, stretching and crash resistance) compared with not reinforced, or in any other way strengthened acrylate. In this study the value of armored acrylate plates (AAP) in the sanation of flail chest in dogs has been verified, as well as its good biological tolerability as a new implant material in dogs. An original approach to surgical reposition and osteosynthesis of fractured ribs in dogs has been determined. An innovative approach to rib osteosynthesis with acrylate plates can be an adequate model for its application in human patients with unstable flail chest, which is often the result of injury or tumor excision.

AB - Thyroid hormones stimulate aerobic metabolism which may lead to oxidative stress accompanied by damage to various cellular macromolecules, including DNA. Previous comet assay studies have shown that thyroid hormones cause DNA damage due to the creation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, cytogenetic studies have been equivocal because although an increase in the sister-chromatid exchange frequency per cell has been reported increased micronuclei frequency has not. We used cytogenetic examination of chromosome breakage and aberrations in whole-blood cultures of human peripheral blood lymphocytes to investigate possible clastogenic effects when lymphocytes were exposed to 0.002 mu M to 50 mu M of L-thyroxine for 24 h and 48 h, these concentrations being chosen because they had been used in previous studies of sister-chromatid exchange and micronuclei frequency. Under our experimental conditions thyroxine did not induced any statistically significant increase in chromosome breakage or aberrations. This lack of clastogenic effects is in contrast to the reported comet assay results obtained using purified lymphocytes, possibly because whole-blood cultures contain catalase and glutathione peroxidase capable of reducing the effects of reactive oxygen species.

AB - This study was designed to determine whether adult neurogenesis occurs in the dentate gyrus of rats, and to explore the possibility that this process is regulated by the activation of sex hormones. The proliferation of hippocampal dentate gyrus granule cells was investigated using 80 nC; 3H thymidine incorporation in the first group andin the second grouph 80 μCi3H - thymidine and 1mg estrogene dipropionae. We proved the existence of a stronger proliferation of granule cells in SGZ GD in female rats. The third group of newborn female Wistar rats was treated at 4 and 8 a days of ageold with a single dose of 2 mg of testosterone propionate. We proved the existence of minor damages of granule cells in SGZ GD. In the fourth group treated at 15 days of age, a single dose of 4 mg testosterone propionate and sacrificed when 60 days old, we proved the existence of minor damages of granular cells in SGZ GD. Our results suggest a differential effect of sex hormones on dentate gyrus granule cells proliferation through early life in rats.

AB - The amygdaloid complex (AC) of rat brain is sensitive to sex steroids, especially during neonatal development. The aim of this investigation was to determine possible changes in neuron morphology of the basomedial nucleus (BMN) of the AC in female rats treated with estradiol. Two straining techniques were used: (1) standard histological staining with hematoxylin-eosin and (2) the Golgi method. Three types of neurons: pyramidal, fusiform and stellate were subjected to stereologic analaysis. Estradiol significantly increased the volume of neuronal soma of all three neuronal types at 16 and 90 days of age, whereas at day 38 changes were observed only in fusiform and stellate neurons. In addition, the volume of cell nuclei was increased but the number of neurons per unit area decreased at all experimental intervals examined. Therefore, estradiol causes stereologically detectable changes in the size and number of neurons in BMN AC.
