Thymol (5-methyl-2-isopropylphenol) is a phenol derivate which is found in essential oil of thyme (Thymus spp.) and some other plants. Beside several other effects spasmolytic activity of thymol was described. Therefore, the aim of our preliminary study was to determine the impact of thymol on the intensity of small intestine contractions caused by acetylcholine under in vitro conditions. In this study ileums of two Wistar rats were used and the intensity of ileum contraction was measured with the system for work on isolated organs. Different amounts of acetylcholine and thymol were added into the chamber with isolated ileum to exhibit ileum contractions. Results show that thymol suppresses intensity of ileum contractions caused by acetylcholine. In order to determine the exact mechanism of thymol action and to estimate the possible use of thymol as a drug with spasmolytic activity further studies should be performed.
