populations).
Veterinary pathology is the science that studies disease in animals. Conservationism
is an ecological movement that supports conservation, especially that of natural
resources – land, air, water, plants and animals.
Human impacts (industrial and agricultural development and use of pesticides and
other toxic substances) and environmental change over the last 100 years have
endangered many animal species leading to decline of their number, loss of genetic
diversity and increasing the threat of extinction from disease. Also, increasing contact
with humans and domesticated species, through spreading of industrial and
agricultural influence and development of ecotourism, increased the risk of intentional
and unintentional poisoning, disease transmission, and unpredictable vector dynamics
resulting from climate change have the potential to introduce diseases to naïve
populations. Maintaining healthy populations of endangered species is integral to
conservation programs.
Eurasian... griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) is one of the most important endangered animal
species in Serbia. Due to human impact (poisoning mostly) after WWII it was on the
edge of extinction in Serbia. Thanks to great effort of conservationists the population
is saved but still fragile.
Health surveillance and monitoring programs are of great importance in conservation
of this species and it requires multidisciplinary approach which includes clinical
veterinarians, epizootiologists, epidemiologists, nutritionists, toxicologists,
microbiologists but also ecologists, wildlife biologists, wildlife rangers and
behaviourists.
But, due to their knowledge and skills to recognize diseases in animals through
changes in tissues, predict the outcome of those diseases, and investigate the causes
of diseases, and also to use these information to focus research efforts and design
preventive medicine programs that maximize the number of healthy animals,
veterinary pathologists play the key role in the conservation science teams who
monitor the Eurasian griffon vulture population and also all other endangered species
in Serbia.
