The respiratory tract extends from the mouth or nasal cavity to the alveoli. Expected or unexpected apnea in dogs can occur due to a number of complications, such as: laryngeal paralysis, tracheal collapse, pneumonia, pulmonary edema, pneumothorax, intrathoracic masses, and diaphragmatic hernia. Anesthesia can cause complications, as the choice of anesthetic itself can worsen or even cause unexpected apnea. However, it is sometimes indicated to induce expected apnea using various sedatives, analgesics and general anesthetics, in order to allow the patient, with the potentially mentioned pathology of the respiratory tract, adequate gas exchange under strictly controlled conditions. Follow-up and monitoring of the patient are very important and should be directed towards the proper functioning of the respiratory system, i.e. to enable a sufficient amount and concentration of oxygen (O2) to the patient, as well as the removal of carbon dioxide (CO2) from cells throughout the body. Also, in a similar way, it is sometimes necessary to induce apnea in dogs during some diagnostic procedures, for the sake of the highest quality and most accurate findings. Most anesthetics cause some degree of respiratory depression. The degree of respiratory depression or apnea generally depends on the dose of analgesics, sedatives, and general anesthetics. With quality monitoring, mechanical or manual ventilation, expected or unexpected apnea in dogs can be very successfully controlled.sr
