It is known that the application of antiparasitic drugs in domestic animals, both
in conventional breeding and those that are kept freely, achieves a multiple effect.
In addition to protecting the health of animals and improving the productivity of
such individuals, this measure has a wider significance, because by destroying
various parasites, the transmission of various diseases is also prevented. Unlike
ectoparasites (which can rarely cause the death of individuals), endoparasites, (in
addition to the possible disruption of the immune status and increased sensitivity
to numerous pathogens, i.e. diseases), they can threaten their life.
For this reason, the drugs used against said parasites are of greater importance.
The most important groups of antiendoparasitic drugs used today to control
parasites in animals are: benzimidazoles, imidazothiazoles,
tetrahydropyrimidines, piperazines, macrocyclic lactones, and to a lesser extent
pyrazinoisoquinolines.
However, the very fr...equent and irrational use of antiparasitic drugs, especially in
the last two to three decades, has caused the development of resistance in
endoparasites, almost all over the world. It was shown that the emergence of
resistance is most pronounced in ruminant parasites, and to a lesser extent in pigs,
horses and poultry parasites.
Although the occurrence of resistance has been recorded worldwide, it should be
noted that it is generally at a lower level in the European Union for now.
Nevertheless, it is predicted that the problem of treating infections or parasitic
diseases (due to the increasing development of resistance) will increase in the
future. This is especially due to the fact that after the introduction of avermectin
into clinical practice (which was still in the eighties of the last century), no new
anti-endoparasitic drugs appeared. Therefore, in order to achieve a better and
more effective treatment of parasitic infections, it will be necessary to take into
account more rational use of antiparasitic drugs.
