African swine fever is a viral disease caused by a virus from the Asfarviridae family of the genus Asfivirus. Only domestic and wild pigs get sick, on the European continent the disease is extremely fatal, it is most often acute and has a high lethality. The appearance of the disease leads to great economic damage in pig breeding, both direct and indirect.
Since 2017. and the first case of African plague in Romania, the territory of the South Banat Administrative District is classified in areas of high risk of African plague, within the monitoring of classical swine fever and African swine fever in wild pigs, because the municipalities of Plandiste, Vrsac and Bela Crkva borders Republic of Romania. There is a constant threat of transmission of African plague from Romania, as wild boars naturally migrate across the border during the year, and there are two border crossings in the South Banat district, of which the Vatin border crossing is high, with over 2,000 vehicles crossing the bor...der daily of this crossing.
In the wild boar population in 2021 African swine fever was diagnosed in two hunting grounds in the municipality of Vršac. In the hunting ground of Vršačka planina, the disease was first diagnosed in the open part and then in the fenced part of the hunting ground, a total of 99 samples from dead pigs were sampled, of which 89 samples were positive (90%). One dead wild boar was found in the Karash-Kustilj hunting ground, and a part of the genome of the African plague virus was found in it.
Both hunting grounds are located in the area of Vršac Mountains, the hunting ground is forest-mountain type, overgrown with dense low and high vegetation, acacia, linden, oak forests, with numerous cuts in which there are streams, which is an ideal habitat for wild boars and other wild animals.
The hunting grounds, with their southern borders, lean on Romania, the county of Caras Severin, where African plague was diagnosed in wild boars in the first months of 2021. Given the natural migration of wild boar, this is the source of the African swine fever virus for these two hunting grounds. The first case was reported in mid-June, and the last positive case in early September 2021. The paper will present the work in the field of VSI Pančevo specialists, on the detection and control of African plague in wild pigs.
