AB  - Скоро сваки облик понашања животиња повезан је са излагањем неким врстама паразита. Исхрана и тражење хране је главни пут инфекције за трофички преносиве бактерије и хелминте; социјални облик понашања погодује ширењу разних инфективних агенаса који се преносе контактом; репродуктивни облик понашања је кључан у преношењу полно преносивих бактерија, вируса и протозоа; док је истраживачки облик понашања повезан са преносом разних екто- и ендопаразита. Понашање такође има централну улогу у борби против паразита и представља прву линију одбране од инфекција различите етиологије. Различите стратегије понашања се мењају током инфекције/инфестације домаћина паразитима, из бројних разлога. Паразити поседују широк спектар начина на који могу да манипулишу понашањем домаћина како би побољшали своју кондицију, или да промене понашање животиња у сопствену корист. Наведени процеси могу да буду резултат имунолошких реакција или патолошких промена насталих током инфекције паразитима.. Неке од ових метода деловања имају за циљ повећање степена и могућности преношења од прелазног до правог домаћина, повећањем или смањењем активности, што доводи до повећане рањивости прелазног домаћина од стране предатора, потискивање одговора домаћина на страх или његове способности да препозна предатора (миш и мачка). Друге методе имају за циљ да смање репродуктивну способност домаћина (паразитска кастрација), омогућавајући паразиту да искористи велике количине хранљивих материја домаћина. Са друге стране, током еволуције, домаћини су се супростављали развијањем отпорности на паразитске инфекције и/или развојем толеранције на њихово штетно дејство. Ови одбрамбени механизми укључују смањење могућности за инфекцију паразитима променом станишта или хране, препознавање и избегавање инфицираних појединаца као потенцијалног плена или сексуалног партнера. Ако се инфекција не може спречити, паразити могу бити уклоњени стратегијама хигијенског облика понашања као што су чешање или ваљање у прашини и блату. Промене у понашању (летаргија, недостатак апетита, чешање, општа малаксалост) су углавном неки од најчешћих разлога због којих власник доводи животињу код ветеринара, а ови клинички знаци могу указивати на инфекцију паразитима.
AB  - Almost every aspect of an animal’s behaviour is associated with exposure to some type of parasite. Foraging is a major route of infection for environmental and trophically transmitted bacteria and helminths; and social behaviour contributes to the dissemination of various contact-transmitted infectious agents; mating behaviour is critical in the transmission of sexually transpolnomitted bacteria, protozoa, and viruses; explorative behaviour is associated with transmission of various ecto- and endoparasites. Behavior also plays a central role in how hosts defend themselves against parasites and it is the first line of defense against infection. Different behavioral strategies change during hosts infection/infestation with parasites for a number of reasons. Parasites have a wide range of ways to manipulate host behavior to improve their own fitness, or to change animal behavior to their own advantage. The above-mentioned processes can be the result of immune reactions or pathological changes occurring during parasite infection. Some of these methods aim to increase the rate of transmission from intermediate to definitive host by increasing or reducing activity that results in increased vulnerability of the intermediate host to predation, suppressing a host’s fear response, or its ability to recognize a predator (the mouse and the cat). Others aim to downregulate the reproductive fitness of a host (parasitic castration), allowing the parasite to maximize nutrient-taking from the host.
On the other hand, during evolution hosts have counteracted by evolving resistance to parasite infections and/or developing a tolerance against their harmful effects. These defense mechanisms include reducing the chances of getting infected via a change in habitat or food preference; and recognizing and avoiding infected individuals, both as potential prey species and sexual partners. If an infection could not be prevented, the parasites can be attacked or removed by the host’s hygienic behavior, such as scratching, dust and water bathing. Behavioral changes (lethargy, inappetance, scratching, general malaise) are generally some of the most common reasons why an owner brings an animal to a veterinary practitioner, and these clinical signs can be indicative of a parasite infection.

AB  - Инфекције изазване гастроинтестиналним паразитима представљају један од
значајних здравствених проблема за говеда широм света. Ови паразити могу
изазвати широк спектар здравствених проблема и утицати на добробит
животиња. Упркос негативним ефектима паразитизма, са становишта
добробити животиња пожељан је боравак млечних говеда на пашњацима. Циљ
овог истраживања је био да се утврди паразитолошки статус и оцени добробит
говеда у различитим системима гајења у пролећној и јесењој сезони.
Истраживање је спроведено у Јужнобанатском округу на фармама говеда која
се гаје у везаном, невезаном и пашном систему. Узорци фецеса су квалитативно
и квантитативно испитани на присуство паразита. За процену добробити
коришћени су директни показатељи добробити засновани на Welfare Quality®
протоколу за говеда. Копролошким прегледом су идентификоване протозое
(кокцидије и Buxtonella sulcata), нематоде (Strongylidae), цестоде (Moniezia spp)
и трематоде (Paramphistomum spp., Dicrocoelium dendriticum, Fasciola hepatica).
У пролећној сезони најзаступљенији ендопаразити су били B. sulcata и
Strongylidae (26,67% - 12/45) као и коинфекције Coccidia - B. sulcata са
преваленцијом од 33,33% (15/45) у интензивном систему. У полуинтензивном
систему гајења говеда преовладавала је коинфекција Coccidia - B. sulcata -
Strongylidae - Paramphistomum spp. (30,62% - 19/62). У јесењој сезони B. sulcata
је била присутна код свих испитиваних говеда у интензивном систему гајења
(100% - 45/45), док су инфекције узроковане метиљима рода Paramphistomum
преовладавале у екстензивном систему (78,18% - 43/55). Мешана инфекција B.
sulcata - Strongylidae је била најзаступљенија код говеда у полуинтензивном
систему (37,10% - 23/62). Мршавост, запрљаност, лезије, исцедак из ока и носа
су индикатори који су нарушили добробит са највећим преваленцијама у
интензивном систему гајења. Утврђене су значајне корелације између
Paramphistomum spp., B. sulcata, Strongylidae и ухрањености, надуна бурага и
исцетка из носа. Ови резултати указују да паразитозе утичу на добробит говеда
и да је потребан бољи санитарни надзор фарми од стране ветеринара са терена
и едукација власника како би се унапредила добробит говеда.
AB  - Infections caused by gastrointestinal parasites represent one of the significant health
problems for cattle worldwide. These parasites can cause a wide range of health
problems and affect animal welfare. Despite the negative effects of parasitism, from
the point of view of animal welfare, it is desirable for dairy cattle to stay on pastures.
The aim of this research was to determine the parasitological status and assess the
welfare of cattle in different farming systems in the spring and autumn seasons. The
research was conducted in the South Banat district on cattle farms that are raised in
tied, untied and grazing systems. Feces samples were qualitatively and quantitatively
examined for the presence of parasites. Direct welfare indicators based on the Welfare
Quality® protocol for cattle were used to assess welfare. Coprological examination
identified protozoa (coccidia and Buxtonella sulcata), nematodes (Strongylidae),
cestodes (Moniezia spp.) and trematodes (Paramphistomum spp., Dicrocoelium
dendriticum, Fasciola hepatica). In the spring season, the most common
endoparasites were B. sulcata and Strongylidae (26.67% - 12/45), as well as coinfections of Coccidia - B. sulcata with a prevalence of 33.33% (15/45) in the intensive
system. Coccidia - B. sulcata - Strongylidae - Paramphistomum spp. co-infection
prevailed in the semi-intensive cattle breeding system. (30.62% - 19/62). In the
autumn season, B. sulcata was present in all tested cattle in the intensive farming
system (100% - 45/45), while Paramphistomum spp. prevailed in the extensive system
(78.18% - 43/55). Double infection of B. sulcata - Strongylidae was the most prevalent
in cattle in the semi-intensive system (37.10% - 23/62). Thinness, soiling, lesions,
discharge from the eyes and nose are the indicators that impaired welfare with the
highest prevalence in the tied farming system. Significant correlations were found
between Paramphistomum spp., B. sulcata, Strongylidae and body condition score,
abdominal distention and nasal discharge. These results indicate that parasitoses affect
cattle welfare and that better sanitary surveillance of farms by field veterinarians and
owner education is needed to improve cattle welfare.

AB  - Potražnja za proizvodima životinjskog porekla iz organskih sistema gajenja
povećava se zbog sve veće želje za proizvodima koji imaju ograničenu ili su
potpuno eliminisali upotrebu sintetičkih sredstava i poseduju visoke standarde
dobrobiti životinja. Glavni izazov sa kojima se suočavaju sistemi organske proizvodnje su menadžment i zdravlje životinja. Pojava kliničkih i subkliničkih
bolesti koje su zabeležene u konvencionalnim sistemima gajenja životinja javljaju se i u organskim sistemima, a glavni problemi su mastitis, hromost i
neplodnost. Međutim, veličina pojave bolesti može biti niža ili viša u organskim
sistemima gajenja zbog različitog menadžmenta i standarda definisanih za organsku proizvodnju koji, na primer, zabranjuju rutinsku upotrebu konvencionalnih lekova i zahtevaju ishranu sa visokim sadržajem kabaste hrane.
Organske farme koriste kombinaciju alternativnih, komplementarnih i konvencionalnih lekova za održavanje zdravlja životinja i u mnogim slučajevima oni su
jednako efikasni kao i način lečenja koji se koristi u neorganskoj proizvodnji.
Međutim, za razliku od neorganskih sistema gajenja, još uvek nedostaje naučna
procena organski prihvatljive terapije koje proizvođači organskih životinja
mogu da koriste kada trenutne prakse lečenja nisu dovoljne za održavanje
zdravlja životinja.

abstract = "Potražnja za proizvodima životinjskog porekla iz organskih sistema gajenja
povećava se zbog sve veće želje za proizvodima koji imaju ograničenu ili su
potpuno eliminisali upotrebu sintetičkih sredstava i poseduju visoke standarde
dobrobiti životinja. Glavni izazov sa kojima se suočavaju sistemi organske proizvodnje su menadžment i zdravlje životinja. Pojava kliničkih i subkliničkih
bolesti koje su zabeležene u konvencionalnim sistemima gajenja životinja javljaju se i u organskim sistemima, a glavni problemi su mastitis, hromost i
neplodnost. Međutim, veličina pojave bolesti može biti niža ili viša u organskim
sistemima gajenja zbog različitog menadžmenta i standarda definisanih za organsku proizvodnju koji, na primer, zabranjuju rutinsku upotrebu konvencionalnih lekova i zahtevaju ishranu sa visokim sadržajem kabaste hrane.
Organske farme koriste kombinaciju alternativnih, komplementarnih i konvencionalnih lekova za održavanje zdravlja životinja i u mnogim slučajevima oni su
jednako efikasni kao i način lečenja koji se koristi u neorganskoj proizvodnji.
Međutim, za razliku od neorganskih sistema gajenja, još uvek nedostaje naučna
procena organski prihvatljive terapije koje proizvođači organskih životinja
mogu da koriste kada trenutne prakse lečenja nisu dovoljne za održavanje
zdravlja životinja.",

AB  - Vaši mogu da predstavljaju pretnju po zdravlje ljudi, kućnih ljubimaca i farmskih životinja, ne samo kroz svoje navike hranjenja krvlju ili grickanje, već i zbog
sposobnosti da prenose patogene. Humana vaš je indirektno uticala na istoriju
prenoseći patogene uzročnike epidemijskog tifusa i rovovske groznice. Identifikovano je skoro 5000 vrsta vaši, od kojih oko 4000 parazitira na pticama i 800 na sisarim. Vaši su prisutne na svim kontinentima i staništima koje zauzimaju životinje
i ptice domaćini. Ima ih čak i na Antarktiku, gde pingvini nose 15 vrsta vaši (iz rodova Austrogonoides i Nesiotinus). Phthiraptera se dele na dve glavne morfološki
različite grupe prema tipu usnog aparata: Anoplura, koje poseduju usni aparat za
sisanje, i Mallophaga, sa usnim aparatom za grickanje. Sve vaši koje sisaju krv su
obligatni, hematofagni ektoparaziti sisara, dok su vaši koje grickaju raznovrsniji i
mogu se naći kod sisara, ptica i torbara. Iako se grickanjem može uneti i krv, većina vrsta vaši koje grickaju hrane se perjem, krznom, kožom i proizvodima od kože
domaćina. Usled razli«itih strategija hranjenja ove dve grupe, vaši koje se hrane
krvlju su daleko važnije od vaši koje grickaju zbog prenošenja patogena na svoje
domaćine.

AB  - Pašnjački uzgoj domaćih preživara može imati značajan uticaj na životnu
sredinu i biodiverzitet, odnosno raznolikost živog sveta. Održivo upravljanje
pašnjacima može pozitivno uticati na očuvanje prirodnih zelenih površina,
biodiverzitet ptica, divljači i drugih vrsta životinja. Pašnjaci su izvor hrane i
stanište za mnoge vrste životinja i biljaka. Međutim, nepravilno upravljanje
pašnjacima može dovesti do degradacije zemljišta, smanjenja raznolikosti
biljaka i životinja, kao i nestanka životinjskih vrsta sa određenih geografskih
područja. Prekomerna ispaša, upotreba pesticida i drugih hemikalija mogu
imati štetan uticaj na biodiverzitet. Stoga je važno uspostaviti održivo upravljanje pašnjacima koje će podrazumevati plansko korišćenje pašnjaka, primenom odgovarajućih metoda ispaše. Cilj planskog korišćenja pašnjaka je
održati ravnotežu između potreba domaćih i divljih preživara uz očuvanja
biodiverziteta. Jedna od ključnih mera je definisanje optimalnog broja grla
domaćih preživara na određenoj površini, sa tzv. rotacionim sistemom ispaše, u
cilju odmora određenih pašnjačkih površina i obnove vegetacije, što
omogućava očuvanje raznolikosti biljnih i životinjskih vrsta na određenom
području. Uz pravilno upravljanje pašnjacima, mogu se postići brojni ekološki,
ekonomski i socijalni benefiti.

AB  - Stalni kontakt mlečne žlezde sa površinama koji su potencijalni nosioci patogena i visoki standardi koji se odnose na kvalitet i higijensku ispravnost mleka,
uslovljavaju potrebu da se kontinuirano primenjuju higijenske mere u postupku
muže. Količina, kvalitet i higijenska ispravnost mleka kao ključni faktori uspešnosti farmskog uzgoja krava, zavise pored smeštajnih uslova i od higijene muže, čiji
posebno značajan deo je higijena vimena krava. Jedna od najvažnijih mera koje
se kontinuirano sprovode u cilju održavanja higijene vimena je dezinfekcija, kao
mera čiji je prvenstveni zadatak eliminacija potencijalnih patogena u cilju o«uvanja zdravlja vimena, koli«ine i kvaliteta mleka. Velike ekonomske štete uzrokovane mastitima, i problemi u primeni antibotika u kurativi istih, zahtevaju posebnu
pažnju u izradi i sprovođenju planova kontrole mastitisa, u kojima ključno mesto
ima dezinfekcija vimena pre i posle muže. Razvoj novih dezinficijensa na bazi nano
srebra, sa dobrim efektom na zdravlje vimena i očuvanje količine i kvaliteta mleka
je jedan od budućih pravaca prevencije bolesti mlečne žlezde i očuvanja količine i
kvaliteta mleka.

tip 2 (CPV-2). Kontaminacija objekata i njihovog okruženja je česta uprkos vakcinaciji pasa protiv parvovirusa. Poseban problem predstavlja otpornost virusa u
spoljašnjoj sredini tokom dužeg perioda sa mogućnošću prenošenja na prijemčivog domaćina, ali i njegova otpornost prema večini dezinfekcionih sredstava. Parvovirus pokazuje osetljivost prema halogenima, kao što je natrijum-hipohlorit koji
se sve češće koristi u procesima dezinfekcije u odgajiva«nicama širom sveta. Dobra
higijenska praksa i dezinfekcija u odgajivačnicama, ali i kontinuirana edukacija
vlasnika mogu smanjiti rizik od pojave oboljenja.

AB  - Upotreba parametara reprodukcije kao indikatora dobrobiti životinja ima
ograničenja i zato ove parametre treba posmatrati samo kao indirektne indikatore
dobrobiti. Međutim, reprodukcija može imati direktne negativne efekte na dobrobit
životinja kroz distokiju, abortus, metritis i drugo. Na nivou farme, stopa fertiliteta
naglašava samo biološke performanse stada, ali ne uzima u obzir dobrobit pojedinih
životinja. Dobar reproduktivni učinak ne znači automatski zadovoljavajuću dobrobit
životinja, pošto su domestikacija i ciljani programi uzgoja doveli do davanja prioriteta
visokim produktivnim i reproduktivnim performansama kod većine savremenih vrsta
životinja na farmi. Smanjen reproduktivni učinak na farmama goveda može ukazivati
na prisustvo problema koja se odnose i na dobrobit životinja. U mnogim istraživanjima
je utvrđeno da prenaseljenost, loši higijenski uslovi, toplotni stres i nemogućnost
ispoljavanja prirodnih oblika ponašanja kao što je ispaša utiču na lučenje
adrenokortikotropnog hormona (ACTH) i kortizola. Neuravnoteženo lučenje ovih
hormona može izazvati poremećaj ciklusa jajnika i i uticati na imunski odgovor
reproduktivnog trakta. Visok rizik od ovih poremećaja može uzrokovati smanjene
performanse reprodukcije kao što je produžen servis period, smanjena stopa začeća i
povećan interval teljenja. Sa druge strane, veštačko osemenjavanje može pružiti
potencijalne prednosti za dobrobit životinja jer ova praksa smanjuje rizik od
prenošenja bolesti i povreda i omogućava odabir specifičnih performansi koje
potomstvo nasleđuje od bika. Nasuprot tome, sposobnost životinja da ispolji
reproduktivno ponašanje kao što je ekspresija estrusa, aspekt koji može da doprinese dobrobiti životinja, često je ograničen na komercijalnim farmama koje je posebno
evidentno u vezanom sistemu gajenja goveda.

Health changes of old cats

AB  - The article presents the results of a study on the health problems of cats aged 9 years and older, based on
the observations of their owners. A total of 206 owners of old cats participated in the survey. Most owners
(61%) noted that their cats had behavioral changes associated with medical problems. Other owners noted
either only behavioral changes (10%) or only medical problems (15%) in their old cats. Finally, 14% of owners
did not notice any health changes in their elderly cats. A statistically significant higher number of behavioral
changes was observed in cats in the age category above 13 years (P < 0.01) than in cats aged 9–13 years and
in cats with more than one physical health change (P < 0.001) compared with cats without physical health
changes and with cats with one physical health change. The most frequent change in the behavior of the old
cats was a change in activity (49%).
The results of our work suggest that the course and consequences of aging are unpredictable, and
therefore, aging of cats may have different outcomes. Therefore, health surveillance of old cats and the
competence of veterinarians are crucial to determine which consequences of aging can significantly affect
the welfare and quality of life of old cats.

AB  - The importance of nutrition for the welfare of dogs is highlighted in this review. Malnutrition can be the cause of
many health disorders, including behavioural disorders. On the other hand, dietary interventions and modifications,
and nutritional enrichment can be used for the treatment of certain health problems and improving welfare in dogs.
The paper focuses on data collected from the literature on omissions in the diet of dogs for which owners, food
producers, veterinarians and/or animal welfare societies are responsible. Manufacturers are responsible for the
composition, quality and safety of commercially available dog food. They are also responsible for the clarity of the
feeding guidelines that are provided on the labels. Owners are expected to know what type of food is most suitable for
their dogs in terms of any particular allergies or intolerances they may have, as well the quality and quantity of food
they should feed their dogs. It is especially important for owners to be aware of the risks of using raw food in dog
nutrition. Due to the special social status that dogs have in their owners’ families, owners are increasingly interested in
the quality and safe nutrition of their companions. This should be a challenge for veterinarians to master the necessary
knowledge of pet nutrition, and to develop and provide advice and consulting services in this area within their practice.
Owners’ interest in good quality and safe dog nutrition should also be a challenge for animal welfare societies to
include information on nutrition in general dog ownership education.

Uticaj parazitskih infekcija na dobrobit autohtonih rasa koza u Srbiji

AB  - Козе на испаши су изложене огромној разноликости паразита јер су природни
пашњаци главни извор ендо- и екто- паразита. Ови паразити имају велики утицај
на здравље, добробит и продуктивност животиња. Циљ овог истраживања био је
утврђивање паразитолошког статуса и добробити аутохтоних раса коза у Србији.
Истраживање је спроведено током зимске сезоне на четири мале фарме аутохтоних
балканских и српских белих коза. Сви узорци фецеса су квалитативно и
квантитативно испитани на присуство паразита. За процену добробити коришћени
су директни показатељи добробити засновани на АВИН протоколу за козе. У
испитиваном фецесу коза са четири фарме, идентификовано је девет ендопаразита
у виду коинфекција - протозое (кокцидије и Buxtonella sulcata), нематоде
(желудачно-цревне стронгилиде, Trichuris ovis, Capillaria spp, Dictyocaulus filaria и
Protostrongylidae), цестоде (Moniezia spp) и трематоде Dicrocoelium lanceolatum, са
укупном преваленцијом од 100% (86/86). Најзаступљенији ендопаразити на свим
посматраним фармама су били кокцидије (95,35%, 82/86), а затим желудачноцревне стронгилиде (90,70%, 78/86) и Protostrongylidae (86,04%, 74/86).
Најзаступљеније коинфекције су биле Strongylidae - Coccidia - Protostrongylidae и
Strongylidae - Moniezia spp - Coccidia - Protostrongylidae са преваленцијом од 32,56%
(28/86) и 15,12% (13/86), респективно. Најнеприхватљивији показатељи добробити
коза били су лоше стање длачног покривача (62,79%, 54/86), запрљаност задње
регије тела (31,40%, 27/86) и мршавост (26,74%, 23/86). Уочена је слаба значајна
корелација између стронгилида, аноплоцефалида, Buxtonella sulcata и стања

AB  - Grazing goats are exposed to a huge diversity of parasites since natural pastures are
the main source of internal and external parasites. These parasites impact greatly on
animal health, welfare, and productivity. The aim of this study was determination of
the parasitological state and welfare of autochthonous goats breed in Serbia. The study
was conducted during the winter season on four small farms of native Balkan and
Serbian white goats. All fecal samples for parasites were qualitatively and
quantitatively examined. For welfare assessment, animal-based indicators from
AWIN protocol for goats were used. In the examined feces of goats from four farms,
nine endoparasites were identified in the form of coinfections - protozoa (Coccidia
and Buxtonella sulcata), nematodes (Strongylidae, Trichuris ovis, Capillaria spp,
Dictyocaulus filaria, and Protostrongylidae), cestodes (Moniezia spp) and trematodes
Dicrocoelium lanceolatum with a total prevalence of 100% (86/86) (Table 4). The
most prevalent endoparasites in all farms observed was Coccidia (95.35%, 82/86)
followed by Strongylidae (90.70%, 78/86) and Protostrongylidae (86.04%, 74/86).
The most prevalent coinfections were Strongylidae - Coccidia - Protostrongylidae and
Strongylidae - Moniezia spp – Coccidia – Protostrongylidae with prevalence of
32.56% (28/86) and 15.12% (13/86), respectively. The most poor and unacceptable
welfare indicators in goats were hair coat condition (62.79%, 54/86), hindquarters

укупном преваленцијом од 100% (86/86). Најзаступљенији ендопаразити на свим
посматраним фармама су били кокцидије (95,35%, 82/86), а затим желудачноцревне стронгилиде (90,70%, 78/86) и Protostrongylidae (86,04%, 74/86).
Најзаступљеније коинфекције су биле Strongylidae - Coccidia - Protostrongylidae и
Strongylidae - Moniezia spp - Coccidia - Protostrongylidae са преваленцијом од 32,56%
(28/86) и 15,12% (13/86), респективно. Најнеприхватљивији показатељи добробити
коза били су лоше стање длачног покривача (62,79%, 54/86), запрљаност задње
регије тела (31,40%, 27/86) и мршавост (26,74%, 23/86). Уочена је слаба значајна
корелација између стронгилида, аноплоцефалида, Buxtonella sulcata и стања
длачног покривача (р = 0,23, р = 0,21, р = 0,25, п<0,05) и слаба значајна негативна
корелација између протостронгилида и исцетка из носа (р = 0,28, р<0,001).

oko 350 miliona godina i danas predstavljaju red insekata koji broji više od 4400 vrsta. Bubašvabe pripadaju podredu Blattodea koji obuhvata nekoliko vrsta štetnih bubašvaba u domaćinstvima, skladištima, pekarama, restoranima, bolnicama i sličnim
mestima, kao što su Crna bubašvaba – Blatta orientalis L. iz familije Blattidae i smeđa
bubašvaba (buba rusa) – Blattella germanica L. iz familije Blattellidae. One imaju mešoviti režim ishrane, rado se hrane otpacima, a mogu biti prenosioci (vektori) raznih
oboljenja kod čoveka. Prisustvo nekih vrsta bubašvaba u domaćinstvima i komercijalnim kuhinjama često je pokazatelj loših sanitarnih uslova ili održavanja higijene. Iako
su prvenstveno neprijatne štetočine, njihovo prisustvo može imati važne posledice po
zdravlje ljudi i životinja.
AB  - Cockroaches are among the oldest and most primitive of insects. They evolved
about 350 million years ago and today represent an order of insects numbering more
than 4400 species. Cockroaches belong to the suborder Blattodea which includes several species of harmful cockroaches in households, warehouses, bakeries, restaurants,
hospitals and similar places, such as Black Cockroach – Blatta orientalis L. from the
family Blattidae and brown cockroach – Blattella germanica L. of the family Blattellidae. They have a mixed diet, they like to eat waste, and they can be vectors of various
diseases in humans. The presence of some species of cockroaches in households and
commercial kitchens is often an indicator of poor sanitation or hygiene. Although they
are primarily unpleasant pests, their presence can have important consequences for
human and animal health

Welfare and parasitology condition of extensively reared sheep during winter

AB  - While the welfare of sheep is largely positive when assessed according to natural living in
an extensive system, they may face a range of compromises to their wellbeing, principally
related to nutritional stress, inadequate water supply, climatic extremes, parasitical diseases,
lameness, and inappropriate management. Grazing sheep are therefore exposed to a huge
diversity of parasites since natural pastures are the main source of internal and external
parasites. The aim of this study was to identify the main welfare issues during winter with an
emphasis on parasitological infections in extensive sheep farming systems. The study was
conducted during the winter season of 2022 on three farms of native sheep breed Vlašićka
zackel in the mountain region Fruška gora. All year round, the fl ock of ewes grazes in fenced
paddocks where shelter is provided by trees, shrubs and other vegetation. A total number of
sheep included 550 ewes, 12 rams and 300 lambs. We observed 82 ewes, aged 2-7 years. For
welfare assessment, animal-based indicators from the AWIN protocol for sheep were used.
All fecal samples for parasites were qualitatively and quantitatively examined. Results were
described by descriptive statistics and as prevalence. Relationships between the different
welfare indicators and endoparasites were examined by Spearman’s Rank correlation. The
main welfare issues identifi ed were fl eece cleanliness (84.14%), nasal discharge (45.12%),
ocular discharge (19.51%), respiratory problems (18.29%, 15/82), body condition score-BCS
(15.85%), fl eece quality (20.73%-some loss) and borderline anaemia (9.76%). Lesion on
legs and minor lameness was present in 4.88% ewes. In the examined feces of ewes, seven
endoparasites were identifi ed in the form of coinfections - protozoa (Coccidia and Buxtonella
sulcata), nematodes (strongylides, Trichuris ovis, and Protostrongylidae), cestodes (Moniezia
spp) and trematodes Dicrocoelium dendriticum with a total prevalence of 100%. The most
prevalent coinfections were Coccidia and strongylides (12.20%), Coccidia, strongylides
and Protostrongylidae (12.20%), and Coccidia, strongylides and Dicrocoelium dendriticum
(12.20). The most common was coccidiosis, in the form of infections of medium and high
intensity. Parasite infection was identifi ed as an important and prevalent welfare problem
across all farms, with a weakly signifi cant (r=-
 0.24, r=0.22, p<0.05) correlation between
certain parasites (Buxtonella sulcata and Protostrongylidae) and welfare indicators such as
nasal discharge and borderline anaemia. Also, a signifi cant (r=0.30, p<0.001) correlation
between BCS and fl eece quality was found. The fi ndings provide useful information on the
main welfare issues that can occur in extensive sheep farming and can help farmers to improve
animal welfare.

Initial study on free-roaming dogs in Serbian hunting grounds

AB  - We used the questionnaire method to collect initial data on the presence, characteristics, and attacks on wildlife by free-roaming dogs from 364 employees in professional services for hunting and game management in Serbia. The results showed that more than 80% of participants frequently saw free-roaming dogs in their hunting grounds. Most of the participants saw medium-sized dogs (63%) in groups of more than 5 animals (53%). Forty-three percent of respondents believed that free/roaming dogs belonged to the category of abandoned dogs. Participants noted that the population of free-roaming dogs has increased in the last 5 years in hunting grounds. The smallest share of participants (60%) who noticed an increase in the number of free-roaming dogs was from mountainous hunting grounds (P < 0.5). More than 50% of participants believed that the number of deadly attacks by free-roaming dogs on wildlife has increased in the last 5 years. Roe deer were the most common victims of dog attacks. Lethal methods of controlling the populations of free-roaming dogs were not accepted by participants. Considering the almost identical traditions of the Balkan peoples regarding the treatment of dogs, we consider this study especially important for the region.

AB  - Trihineloza je parazitarno oboljene zajedničko za ljude i životinje, čiji je uzročnik na našim prostorima najčešće Trichinella spiralis, koja spada u tip Nematoda, klasu Adenophorea, red Trichocephalida, familiji Trichinellidae i rodu Tricninella. Trihinela je infektivna za sve vrste sisara. Sa zdravstvenog aspekta najznačajniji su mesojedi i svaštojedi koji su dominantni u ishrani ljudi.
Čovek se zaražava konzumiranjem zaraženog mesa, najčešće mesom domaćih ili divljih svinja. U cilju preveniranja ovog oboljenja kod ljudi u svim zemljama se preduzimaju određene mere koje imaju za cilj sprečavanje zaražavanja životinja, odnosno prenošenje infektivnih larvi sa već obolelih životinja na ljude, odnosno životinje. Osnovni izvor zaražavanja infektivnim larvama trihinele, glodara i svinja, je leš životinje inficiran larvama trihinele, koji je neadekvatno neškodljivo uklonjen.
Nažalost bacanje leševa uginulih životinja u otvorene vodotokove, kanale, na otvorene zelene površine, šumske komplekse, nepravilno zakopavanje, nestručno zakopavanje i skladištenje na stočnim grobljima i u jamama grobnicama, uzrokuje da će lanac širenja trihineloze, na relaciji svinja-glodar, glodar-glodar, glodar-svinja (obe vrste su svaštojedi, a između ostalog i kanibali) biti nemoguće prekinuti, bez obzira na sprovođenje deratizacije kao veterinarsko sanitarne mere. Mora se u startu potcrtati da je ključ uspešnog suzbijanja trihineloze pored deratizacije i neškodljivo uklanjanje leševa uginulih životinja i otpadaka animalnog porekla. Trihineloza je naša svakodnevnica, zato je neophodno u skladu sa važećom zakonskom regulativom kontinuirano edukovati stanovništvo i farmere, u cilju soprovođenja dijagnostike trupova i drugih delova životinja koji sadrže poprečno-prugaste mišiće, kao i neškodljivog uklanjanja otpada životinjskog porekla koji može biti nosilac infektivne trihinele, sa pratećom deratizacijom, u skladu sa važećom zakonskom regulativom. U cilju stručnog sagledavanja zdravstvenog rizika koji nam donosi trihineloza u radu će biti definisane veterinarsko-sanitarne mere za njeno preveniranje i suzbijanje,
sa posebnim osvrtom na važeću zakonsku regulativu i buduće postupke u cilju njenog efikasnog sprovođenja na terenu.

AB  - The overwhelming majority of laying hens used for commercial egg production in the Serbia is con-fined in battery cages. By 2020, conventional cages will no longer be permitted in the Serbia and hens will be housed in furnished cages. The aim of this research was to assess the welfare of laying hens under the influence of different housing systems and analysis of the occurrence, maintenance, and spread of endoparasitic infections. The study was conducted during the winter season 2019/2020 on four rearing systems of Lohman Brown hens. For welfare assess-ment were used indicators from the Welfare quality assessment protocol for poultry which is grouped into 12 welfare criteria based on principles of good feeding, good housing, good health, and appropriate behavior. All fecal samples for parasites were qualitatively and quantitatively examined. The results showed that each housing system had positive and negative aspects but overall, hens in cage systems had the highest prevalence of poor plumage condition (47 % and 39%). Hens in conventional cages had more skin lesions (27%) than birds in other systems. Keel bone deformation was the most present in the aviary system (56%) while comb pecking wound in a conventional cage (33%) and free-range system (50%). Hens in the non cage had the highest prevalence of foot pad disorders (32% and 40%). In furnished cages, problems occurred in hens are the lowest. Parasitological examination diagnosed four groups of endoparasites: Coccidia, Trichostrongylidae and Heterakis spp, and Capillaria spp, with a total prevalence of 64% (64/100) only in free-range system. Laying hens in cage systems have a higher expression of negative emotions in relation to the aviary and free-range system. Evidence of negative hens’ emotional condition in cage systems and negative physical condi-tion across all housing systems, suggests that the welfare of modern hens in Serbia is impaired.

The COVID-19 pandemic affects owners walking with their dogs

AB  - The COVID-19 pandemic imposed a strict state of emergency on Belgrade residents with a curfew and restriction on movement. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine how the measures introduced as a consequence of this disease in the capital of Serbia affected the duration of walking time of owners and their dogs. The study allowed for sociodemographics of owners, characteristics of their homes and breeds of dog. The research was conducted in the period from March 22 to April 4, 2020. In general, the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions reduced the duration of dog walks and owners’ walking time. Of the 216 adult dog owners, 59% walked their dogs successfully (≥150 min/week) before the state of emergency. The number of owners who walked their dogs for ≥150 min/week decreased to only 44% (N = 96) during the state of emergency. The pandemic also decreased the number of owners who achieved total walking times of ≥150 min/week, so only 56% of them were successful in total walking time during the state of emergency (100% were successful before the pandemic, as this was one of inclusion criteria). This difference was statistically significant (P < 0.01). A Wilcoxon signed-rank test found significant differences in the total walking time before and during the state of emergency, with regard to characteristics of the owner, home and dog, with strong effect sizes for these differences (P < 0.01). McNemar's test showed that female owners, owners aged 45-64 years and owners with high income who were previously successful in walking their dogs (≥150 min/week) were more affected by the pandemic in regard to walking time with dogs (P < 0.01). Significant correlations (P < 0.01) were observed between dog breed and walking time before the state of emergency; age and walking time with the dog during the state of emergency and; age and total walking time during the state of emergency. Comparisons between different categories within the same characteristics (owner demographics, home characteristics and dog breed) by Fisher's exact test found significant differences only between younger and older dog owners in total walking time during the state of emergency (P < 0.01). Younger owners were significantly more successful in achieving ≥150 min/week total walking time than owners aged 45-64. The COVID-19 pandemic has left some owners jobless and allowed them to spend more time walking dogs. The occurrence of this disease has led to changes in the social structure of households and in the daily habits of household members. These factors have affected on the length of walking time of owners and their dogs in Belgrade.

Kinds of pet chosen and manner of pet acquisition during COVID 19 in Serbia

AB  - In mid-March 2020, a state of emergency was declared in Serbia in order to prevent the spread of COVID 19. Many activities of Serbian citizens were limited or completely stopped. Citizens had to spend most of their time confined in their homes. However, some still wanted and managed to acquire pets. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine which kinds of pets (dogs, cats and non-traditional animals) the residents of Serbia acquired during the first year of the COVID 19 pandemic and in which manner (purchase, adoption or gift). If the pets were acquired by adoption, the participants were asked from what sources they adopted them. Finally, how the characteristics of the owner and their household influenced the adoption of pets was examined. A total of 566 pet owners who acquired pets in the pre-COVID 19 and COVID 19 periods participated in the research. The COVID pandemic reduced the number of pet owners 2.7-fold in 2020 compared to 2019. Dogs were the most favourite pets acquired before (43%) and during (43%) the pandemic. During the pandemic, 61% of pets were acquired by adoption and the percentage of dogs, cats and non-traditional pets adopted directly from previous owners increased by 32%, 13% and 12%, respectively. The probability of acquiring pets by adoption was significantly increased by the presence of people older than 65 in the household (OR=2.56; P=0.02), the absence of children up to 5 years of age (OR=0.17; P<0.001) in the household, lower monthly incomes (OR=0.47; P<0.001), the greater available free time of the owner (OR=2.09; P<0.001), and the period of adoption (OR=2.42; P<0.001).

abstract = "In mid-March 2020, a state of emergency was declared in Serbia in order to prevent the spread of COVID 19. Many activities of Serbian citizens were limited or completely stopped. Citizens had to spend most of their time confined in their homes. However, some still wanted and managed to acquire pets. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine which kinds of pets (dogs, cats and non-traditional animals) the residents of Serbia acquired during the first year of the COVID 19 pandemic and in which manner (purchase, adoption or gift). If the pets were acquired by adoption, the participants were asked from what sources they adopted them. Finally, how the characteristics of the owner and their household influenced the adoption of pets was examined. A total of 566 pet owners who acquired pets in the pre-COVID 19 and COVID 19 periods participated in the research. The COVID pandemic reduced the number of pet owners 2.7-fold in 2020 compared to 2019. Dogs were the most favourite pets acquired before (43%) and during (43%) the pandemic. During the pandemic, 61% of pets were acquired by adoption and the percentage of dogs, cats and non-traditional pets adopted directly from previous owners increased by 32%, 13% and 12%, respectively. The probability of acquiring pets by adoption was significantly increased by the presence of people older than 65 in the household (OR=2.56; P=0.02), the absence of children up to 5 years of age (OR=0.17; P<0.001) in the household, lower monthly incomes (OR=0.47; P<0.001), the greater available free time of the owner (OR=2.09; P<0.001), and the period of adoption (OR=2.42; P<0.001).",

AB  - Povećanje populacije insekata, posebno u letnjem periodu, može značajno da
naruši zdravlje i dobrobit farmskih životinja prenoseći razne infektivne i parazitske
bolesti, i prouzrokujući alergijske reakcije. Uznemiravanjem životinja, insekti mogu
značajno da naruše njihovu dobrobit. To ima za posledicu prekid ishrane i povećanje
energetskih potreba koje su neophodne za odbrambeno ponašanja životinja ili izbegavanje insekata. Na ovaj način dolazi do smanjenja telesne mase životinja i prinosa
mleka što ima značajan ekonomski uticaj. Problem koji se odnosi na povećanje populacije insekata javlja se zbog nedostatka dugotrajnih i efikasnih repelenata i poteškoća ili nemogućnosti primene dostupnih jedinjenja, uglavnom na udaljenim pašnjacima ili kod populacija životinja koja slobodno lutaju. Insekti koji značajno narušavaju
zdravlje, dobrobit i produktivnost životinja spadaju u red Diptera i familije Culicidae,
Ceratopogonidae, Muscidae, Oestridae, Simuliidae i Tabanidae.
AB  - Increasing insect populations, especially in the summer, can significantly compromise the health and welfare of farm animals by transmitting various infectious and parasitic diseases, and causing allergic reactions. Insects can significantly compromise animal welfare due to the annoyance and distress suffered by the animals,
when there are a feeding interruptions and energy requirements for avoidance or
defense behaviours initiated by the animals in response to the insects. In this way, there is a reduction in animal body weight and milk yield, which has a significant economic impact. The problem of increasing insect populations occurs due to the lack of
long-lasting and effective repellents and the difficulty or inability to apply available
compounds, for example, on remote pastures areas or in the population of free-roaming animals. Insects that most impair the health, welfare and productivity of animals belong to Diptera such as the families Culicidae, Ceratopogonidae, Muscidae, Oestridae, Simuliidae and Tabanidae.

AB  - Native goat breeds in Serbia has been recognized as an important element of regional agrobiodiversity and play an important role in the safeguarding of cultural and traditional heritage. The aim of this study was to identify the main welfare issues likely to be encountered in extensive goat farming systems with an emphasis on parasitological infections. The study was conducted during the winter season on four small farms of native Balkan and Serbian white goats. For welfare assessment, animal-based indicators from AWIN protocol for goats were used. All fecal samples for parasites were qualitatively and quantitatively examined. The main welfare issues identified were poor hair coat condition (62.79%), dirty and light soiling hindquarters (31.40%), thin body condition score (26.74%), abscesses (19.78%), and udder asymmetry (18.60%). In addition, an important and prevalent welfare problem identified across all farms was parasite infection and weak significant (p < 0.001) correlation between certain parasites (Strongylidae, Moniezia spp., Buxtonella sulcate, and Protostrongylidae) and welfare indicators such as poor hair coat condition and nasal discharge. The results of this study provided the first overview and valuable insight into the impact of extensive systems on the welfare of native goats in the Balcan region.

AB  - Ekstenzivni sistemi gajenja obezbeđuju prirodno okruženje u kome životinje mogu da ispolje prirodne oblike ponašanja na koje su visoko motivisane kao što su ispaša i
istraživanje i na taj način zadovoljavaju osnovne elemente dobrobiti životinja. Sa druge
strane, dobrobit životinja u ekstenzivnom sistemu gajenja sve više privlači pažnju javnosti u poslednje vreme, prvenstveno zbog toga što su prepoznati problemi koji se odnose na četiri principa dobrobiti: ishranu, smeštaj, zdravlje i ponašanje. U ekstenzivnim sistemima gajenja životni uslovi su veoma promenljivi u pogledu klimatskih uslova i pristupa kvalitetnoj hrani i vodi, što može dovesti do hronične gladi i žeđi, kao i do termičkog stresa životinja. Navedeni problemi se razlikuju u zavisnosti od lokacije i godišnjeg
doba. Takođe, usled minimalnog nadzora nad životinjama od strane farmera i slabije
zdravstvene zaštite, pojavljaju se različite bolesti infektivne i neinfektivne prirode koje
dovode do povećanja morbiditeta i mortaliteta, kao i do većeg neonatalnog mortaliteta
i napada predatora. Odnos čoveka prema životinjama u ekstenzivnom sistemu gajenja
je obično neutralan ili negativan (obuzdavanje životinja, šišanje ovaca, aplikacija medikamenata i drugo). Usled ovakvog odnosa, kod životinja nastaje strah koji uzrokuje
otežano rukovanje od strane farmera, povećava rizik od povreda ljudi i životinja i smanjuje mogućnost otkrivanja drugih problema u odnosu na zdravlje i dobrobit. Navedeni
problemi koji se odnose na dobrobit životinja u ekstenzivnom sistemu gajenja se mogu
smanjiti selekcijom životinja koje su prilagođene lokalnim klimatskim i prehrambenim
uslovima sredine. Takođe su od velike važnosti obuka farmera i menadžment na farmama zbog toga što se na taj način može poboljšati odnos čoveka prema životinjama

Welfare and meat quality of lambs

AB  - Recently, in many parts of the world, greater importance has been given to lamb meat as well as to the intensive production of lamb and sheep, due to demand for this type of meat at affordable prices. In Serbia, similar to most European countries, the structure of total sheep meat production comprises about 70% lamb meat and 30% sheep meat. This study assessed resource-based measures on 11 dairy sheep farms and investigated, in a total of 30 lambs, the effects of sex, the presence of bruises and pneumonia in carcasses, and carcass and meat quality. Carcass (carcass length, thigh length, croup width, subcutaneous fat thickness, presence of bruises) and meat quality (pH, temperature, drip, thawing and cooking losses, color, and meat quality classes) traits were measured post mortem. The most common deficiencies on farms were high stocking density, poor hygienic conditions, dirty drinkers, and lack of outdoor access. Regarding sex differences, higher prevalences of carcass bruises and severe pneumonia were recorded in male lambs. Meat pH (pH45min), sensory color score, and prevalence of dark, firm and dry (DFD) meat were higher in lambs with carcass bruises. The occurrence of quality defects (DFD meat) was higher in lambs with severe pneumonia. It can be concluded that it is necessary to improve the welfare conditions on the lamb farms and pre-slaughter conditions in order to achieve better lamb meat quality.
AB  - U mnogim delovima sveta, sve više se daje na značaju jagnjećem mesu kao i intenzivnom načinu gajenja jagnjadi i ovaca, usled velike potražnje za jagnjadima po povoljnim cenama. U Srbiji, kao i u najvećem broju zemalja Evrope, akcenat je stavljan na jagnjeće meso, pri čemu u strukturi ukupne proizvodnje ovčijeg mesa oko 70% čini zaklana jagnjad, a ostatak ovce i ovnovi. U ovom istraživanju, ispitani su uslovi dobrobiti na 11 farmi ovaca na osnovu indirektnih pokazatelja, kao i uticaj pola, prisustva modrica i pneumonije na kvalitet trupa i mesa 30 jagnjadi. Postmortem su određivani pokazatelji kvaliteta trupa (dužina trupa, dužina buta, širina sapi, prekrivenost trupa masnim tkivom, prisustvo pneumonija, konformacija i prisustvo modrica) i mesa tovnih jagnjadi (pH, temperatura, sposobnost vezivanja vode mesa, boja mesa, klase kvaliteta mesa). Najčešći nedostaci na ispitivanim farmama su velika gustina naseljenosti, loši higijenski uslovi, prljave pojilice, kao i nedostatak ispusta. Kod muške jagnjadi utvrđen je veći procenat modrica na trupu i patoloških promena na plućima, u odnosu na žensku jagnjad. Kod jagnjadi sa modricama na trupu utvrđena je viša pH (pH45min) vrednost mesa i senzorna ocena za boju mesa, kao i veća učestalost tamnog, suvog i čvrstog (TČS) mesa. Učestalost TČS mesa bila je veća kod jagnjadi sa teškom pneumonijom. Na osnovu rezultata može se zaključiti da je neophodno poboljšati uslove dobrobiti jagnjadi na farmi i tokom postupanja sa jagnjadima pre klanja, kako bi se dobilo meso boljeg kvaliteta.

abstract = "Recently, in many parts of the world, greater importance has been given to lamb meat as well as to the intensive production of lamb and sheep, due to demand for this type of meat at affordable prices. In Serbia, similar to most European countries, the structure of total sheep meat production comprises about 70% lamb meat and 30% sheep meat. This study assessed resource-based measures on 11 dairy sheep farms and investigated, in a total of 30 lambs, the effects of sex, the presence of bruises and pneumonia in carcasses, and carcass and meat quality. Carcass (carcass length, thigh length, croup width, subcutaneous fat thickness, presence of bruises) and meat quality (pH, temperature, drip, thawing and cooking losses, color, and meat quality classes) traits were measured post mortem. The most common deficiencies on farms were high stocking density, poor hygienic conditions, dirty drinkers, and lack of outdoor access. Regarding sex differences, higher prevalences of carcass bruises and severe pneumonia were recorded in male lambs. Meat pH (pH45min), sensory color score, and prevalence of dark, firm and dry (DFD) meat were higher in lambs with carcass bruises. The occurrence of quality defects (DFD meat) was higher in lambs with severe pneumonia. It can be concluded that it is necessary to improve the welfare conditions on the lamb farms and pre-slaughter conditions in order to achieve better lamb meat quality., U mnogim delovima sveta, sve više se daje na značaju jagnjećem mesu kao i intenzivnom načinu gajenja jagnjadi i ovaca, usled velike potražnje za jagnjadima po povoljnim cenama. U Srbiji, kao i u najvećem broju zemalja Evrope, akcenat je stavljan na jagnjeće meso, pri čemu u strukturi ukupne proizvodnje ovčijeg mesa oko 70% čini zaklana jagnjad, a ostatak ovce i ovnovi. U ovom istraživanju, ispitani su uslovi dobrobiti na 11 farmi ovaca na osnovu indirektnih pokazatelja, kao i uticaj pola, prisustva modrica i pneumonije na kvalitet trupa i mesa 30 jagnjadi. Postmortem su određivani pokazatelji kvaliteta trupa (dužina trupa, dužina buta, širina sapi, prekrivenost trupa masnim tkivom, prisustvo pneumonija, konformacija i prisustvo modrica) i mesa tovnih jagnjadi (pH, temperatura, sposobnost vezivanja vode mesa, boja mesa, klase kvaliteta mesa). Najčešći nedostaci na ispitivanim farmama su velika gustina naseljenosti, loši higijenski uslovi, prljave pojilice, kao i nedostatak ispusta. Kod muške jagnjadi utvrđen je veći procenat modrica na trupu i patoloških promena na plućima, u odnosu na žensku jagnjad. Kod jagnjadi sa modricama na trupu utvrđena je viša pH (pH45min) vrednost mesa i senzorna ocena za boju mesa, kao i veća učestalost tamnog, suvog i čvrstog (TČS) mesa. Učestalost TČS mesa bila je veća kod jagnjadi sa teškom pneumonijom. Na osnovu rezultata može se zaključiti da je neophodno poboljšati uslove dobrobiti jagnjadi na farmi i tokom postupanja sa jagnjadima pre klanja, kako bi se dobilo meso boljeg kvaliteta.",

Trends in intake and outcomes for European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) in the Czech rescue centers

AB  - The European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) is a species found in abundance throughout Europe. Nevertheless, it has seen a decline in some regions. This study aimed to analyze trends in intake and outcomes for hedgehogs admitted into rescue centers in the Czech Republic. In the period from 2010 to 2019, 16,967 European hedgehogs were admitted in 34 rescue centers in the Czech Republic. Most hedgehogs were admitted in September (25.30%) and October (22.14%), the fewest in March (0.96%). Most admitted hedgehogs were hoglets (59.49%). The treatment was successful in 44.39% of admitted hedgehogs; those were subsequently released into the wild. On average, they stayed in rescue centers for 48.77 days (median of 30 days). Death or euthanasia was an outcome for 25.27% and 3.15% of admitted hedgehogs, respectively. Only 0.59% of the hedgehogs remained in captivity with a permanent handicap. The highest release rate was achieved in hedgehogs admitted after falls into pits and other openings (83.19%), whereas the least success was achieved in poisoned hedgehogs (13.21%). An increasing trend (rSp = 0.9273, p < 0.01) was found in the number of hedgehogs admitted to rescue centers during the monitored period. Furthermore, not all of them required human care. Given the fact that less than a half of the admitted hedgehogs could be released, raising public awareness of this issue could help to avoid unnecessary interventions (especially in hoglets).

Causes of admission, length of stay and outcomes for common kestrels in rehabilitation centres in the Czech Republic

AB  - Rehabilitation centres help injured animals to recover and return back to the wild. This study aimed to analyse trends in intake and outcomes for the common kestrels (Falco tinnunculus) admitted into rehabilitation centres in the Czech Republic. From 2010 to 2019, a total of 12,923 kestrels were admitted to 34 rehabilitation centres with an increasing trend (rSp = 0.7697, P < 0.01) being found during the monitored period. Subadult kestrels (34.70%) and kestrels injured by power lines (26.57%) were most often admitted. Most kestrels in the rehabilitation centres died or had to be euthanized (81.66%), only 15.90% of the birds could be released back into the wild. The median length of stay in rehabilitation centres for kestrels that were subsequently released was 35 days. Considering survival rates, the most critical threat to kestrels was poisoning (100% of the cases resulted in death) but mortality of the kestrels admitted for most other reasons also exceeded 80%. Given the low success rate of the care of kestrels in rehabilitation centres and the relatively small proportion returned to the wild, it is essential to eliminate the causes leading to their admission, that is, to protect their natural habitats and to prevent unnecessary capture.
