AB - The aim of this work was to determine the fatty acid profile and health lipid indices of fresh
turkey meat, as well as products obtained from turkey meat, i.e. turkey sausage and pate.
Turkey breast muscles were cut from the side of the carcass, separately vacuum packed
and stored in a refrigerator before analysis. Sausages and pate were produced from turkey
meat using a technological process. The fatty acid profile of the samples was determined
by gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector (GC/FID), and lipid indices were
calculated based on the composition. Turkey muscle had a higher percentage of C16:0 and
C18:0 than turkey sausage and pate. A significantly higher proportion of saturated fatty acids
(47.9%) than in sausage and pate, 27.2 and 8.9%, respectively, characterized turkey muscle.
The lowest determined proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids for turkey muscle was
12.0%. The atherogenicity index was satisfactory for all three tested products, while the
thrombogenicity index was satisfactory only for the tested raw turkey muscle meat (1.656).

AB - Infection with coccidia is one of the most common and damaging sheep diseases, particularly young lambs and
economically important diseases of sheep. Coccidiosis is caused by parasitic protozoa in the genus Eimeria. Coccidial
infection is virtually universal in sheep and large numbers of oocysts may be found in the faeces of clinically normal
animals. Usually it is presented at animals at 4-10 weeks.Lamb and kids infection had moderate morbidity and low
mortality rate. Environmental contamination and resulting clinical disease is generally influenced by local weather
conditions and the grazing management practices of the flock. In our paper, we present measures to control coccidiosis
in sheep kept in frame breeding conditions.

AB - Coenurosisa is a zoonotic disease caused by the larval forms of Taenia
multiceps which are great host's animals from the family of canids. The disease is
global distribution but is most present in the Mediterranean, Middle East, Central
Africa and Australia. Larvae exhibit tropism toward brain tissue, and cysts are
usually located in the left hemisphere of the brain of small ruminants. Involvement
of the brain can cause increased intracranial pressure, seizures, loss of
consciousness, and focal neurologic deficits. During 2022 we examinee one flocks
of 78 milking sheep reared on hilly pastures located below the Zmajevac hill (397
m), between the branches of the Osimćki mountains and the river Zapadna Morava,
at an altitude of 178 m. Symptoms of ataxia, such as unsteady gait and stumbling,
and depression were observed in 12 animals. In 5 sheep, continuous aimless or
circular movement, wandering, was also manifested. In addition to these
symptoms, in one sheep that died, visual disturbances were observed depression
and unilateral blindness. All affected sheep were slaughtered and a
pathoanatomical examination was performed. In the brain of all animals we
revealed the presence of infestation with one to four coenuri 4.1-5.5 cm in size.
The sites of predilection were the left hemisphere (48%), followed by the right
hemisphere (40%) and the cerebellum (12%). The coenurus has a thin wall
surrounding a single cavity that contains a clear fluid. When the cysts were
opened, numerous scoleces were found inside, from 2 to 3 mm in diameter attached
to the cyst wall. Each scolex has four circular suckers and two rows of hooks on a
rostellum. The hook lengths are 147 to 165 µm and 87 to 125 µm.The results show
that C. cerebralis was a major cause of the nervous manifestations of cenurosis in
clinically affected sheep.

diarrhea that can end in the death of calves. Rota and Corona viruses open the door
for secondary bacterial agents, complicating the clinical picture of diarrhea. This
paper presents a case of diarrhea in calves caused by Rota viruses and the result of
vaccination after the case. On the farm of 20 cows, the Simmental breed, in July 2022,
the deaths of 3 calves, aged from 5 to 12 days, were recorded. Despite the applied
adequate therapy, the calves died quickly. The clinical picture in the affected calves
was acute, with marked profuse content, with dehydration and apathy present. In
addition, as a significant predisposing factor for the occurrence of diarrhea is heat
stress, where daily temperatures ranged up to 40 ℃. Rectal swabs from sick calves
were taken for diagnostic testing. The presence of Rotavirus in the test swabs was
confirmed by the PCR method. Due to the current problem on the farm, all pregnant
cows were vaccinated in the period 4-12 weeks before the expected calving date with
a commercially available vaccine. Vaccination of cows during the drying period 4-12
weeks before the expected calving against Corona and Rotavirus achieves adequate
passive immune protection in newborn calves. The results of vaccination of highly
pregnant cows are reflected in the reduction of diarrhea, the reduction of death rates,
the reduction of treatment costs, as well as the reduced use of antibiotics is the most
important task in preventing the further growth of antimicrobial resistance. The most
important conclusion from this case is that no new cases of diarrhea were recorded,
the use of antibiotics in calves from vaccinated cows was significantly reduced, and in
the later stages of rearing such calves had much fewer health problems.

Diarrhea in newborn calves creates major problems, creating major economic losses.

AB - Meso divlje svinje se smatra namirnicom visoke nutritivne vrednosti,
koju karakteriše nizak sadržaj masti i holesterola. Nizak nivo ukupne
zasićenih i nezasićenih masnih kiselina. Cilj ovog istraživanja je da
utvrdi masnokiselinski profil i hemijski sastav mesa divlje svinje. Tokom
20 jedinki. AOAC (2021) je korišćen za utvrđivanje sadržaja vlage,
masti, proteina i pepela. Determinacija masnih kiselina izvršena je na
gasnom hromatografu (GC6890N, Agilent Tech., USA).
AB - Wild boar meat is considered a meat of high nutritional value, regarding
its high iron and low fat content. However, low intramuscular fat level
does not imply favorable ratio of saturated to unsaturated fatty acids.
The aim of the present study is to determine fatty acid profile, along
with chemical composition of wild boar meat. A total of 20 samples of m.
longissimus dorsi were collected during the hunting season in 2021 year.
The AOAC (2001) method was applied for determination of moisture, fat,
ash and protein content. Analysis of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) was
performed on a gas chromatograph (GC6890N, Agilent Tech., USA). Total
intramuscular fat content in the examined samples was low (1.9%), while
crude protein content was at the level of 22.5%. It is considered that ideal
intramuscular fat content of fresh meat is between 2 and 3%. In the current
study, wild boar meat had a lower fat content. However, due to consumers’
preference for lean meat, it could be estimate as favorable, regarding its
health impact. Health and nutritional indicators of fat are determined by
the level of particular fatty acids. The ratio of polyunsaturated to saturated
fatty acids should be higher than 0.4. Wild boar meat had the PUFA/SFA
ratio 0.56. Among the saturated fatty acids, not all have the same effect
on human health. Myristic acid has the most adverse effect by increasing
the concentration of cholesterol in plasma. Wild boar meat contained small
amounts of myristic acid (0.97%). The most abundant among saturated
fatty acid was stearic acid (17.5%) that is considered neutral. Among all, the
most abundant was unsaturated - oleic acid (41.8%). It can be concluded
that wild boar meat fulfill human health indicators based on its fatty acid
profile, as well as consumers’ expectations for lean meat.

AB - In the current conditions of economic and social development, the danger of radioactive contamination
on a large scale has increased significantly due to more frequent accidents at nuclear power plants, which
increases the degree of threat to biotechnical production and radiation risk to the population. It is known
that the main route of intake of radioactive substances in humans and animals, in the case of radioactive
contamination of a territory, is intake through food (it accounts for over 70% of the total intake of
radionuclides). It is also known that the basis of any protection, including radiation, is prevention, i.e. cutting
the chain of contamination before the contaminant reaches the human or animal body. As the food chain is
the main route of intake of radionuclides in the body, it is clear that the protection of that chain can most
successfully protect a person. For over 35 years, LABRAH-Laboratory for Radiation Hygiene, as an
accredited laboratory, has been performing continuous radiation-hygienic supervision, import-export, over
products of animal origin, animal feed, feed additives and other products. This paper presents the results of
gamma spectrometric control of fish samples, fish products and fish food in the period from 2015 to 2021.
The aim of this paper is to point out the current radiation situation in the field of radiation hygiene control
and the manner of implementation of procedures and measures for protection against radioactive
contamination of produced radionuclides in regular conditions, as a basis for human and animal health.
Based on the results obtained in the period from 2016 to 2021, the activity of 137Cs in fish, fish products and
fish food was below the prescribed limits. During this period, there was no additional radioactive pollution of
the environment, we mean the nuclear accident in Fukushima, and also that the activities of this radionuclide
in our diet are at a very low level.

AB - Introduction: Modern antiparasitic pharmacotherapy faces several important challenges. An
increasing number of reports refer to the resistance of parasitic nematodes to conventional
antiparasitic drugs, while dose increasing manifests their toxicity. Particularly important for
veterinary medicine is the fact that most antiparasitic drugs require a long withdrawal period
after application in animals whose tissues are intended for human consumption.
Aims: To examine the potential antinematodic effect of selected monoterpenoid and
diterpenoid active principles of essential vegetable oils and determine the mechanism by
which they achieve antiparasitic effects.
Materials and Methods: Investigation of the interaction of active principles of essential
vegetable oils with cholinergic and GABA-ergic nematode receptors on neuromuscular
preparation Ascaris suum and Caenorhabidis elegans culture.
Results: The terpenoids alpha-pinene, p-cymene, carveol, carnosol and cinnamaldehyde do
not show any pharmacological effects on the contractions of the neuromuscular preparation A.
suum. The monoterpenoid carvacrol exhibits the properties of the competitive / noncompetitive nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) antagonist A. suum and effectively and
significantly inhibits neuromuscular contractions caused by increasing acetylcholine
concentrations. - carvacrol does not alter the EC50 value of acetylcholine The tested active
principles of essential oils in our tests showed a specific and unique mechanism of action that
potentially enables them high efficacy, even in nematodes resistant to classical anthelmintics.
Conclusion: Based on our results, carvacrol, carveol, menthol and thymol are very serious
candidates for independent use in antinematode therapy or use in combination with drugs
agonists of GABA receptor nematodes.

abstract = "Introduction: Modern antiparasitic pharmacotherapy faces several important challenges. An
increasing number of reports refer to the resistance of parasitic nematodes to conventional
antiparasitic drugs, while dose increasing manifests their toxicity.

AB - The potential of goats to produce a high-quality meat is mainly reflected in their healthy fats, low calorie intramuscular fats, saturated fats, and, especially, their high ratios of unsaturated (UFA) and saturated (SFA) fatty acids, as well as hypocholesterolemic and hypercholesterolemic fatty acids. The aim of this study was to collect and compare meat quality parameters for domestic Balkan, Alpine and Saanen goats of the same age. Samples for all tests were taken from musculus gluteus superficialis. Chemical composition, pH value, fatty acid composition, content of volatile compounds, color and overall sensory quality (appearance, texture and smell) were determined. In chemical composition, moisture, fat, protein and ash varied significantly between each of the examined groups as opposed to pH values. Furthermore, among all the examined groups a significant difference was found for fatty acids and volatile compounds. Determined ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) to SFAs was 0.089, 0.085 and 0.071 for Balkan, Alpine and Saanen goat meats, respectively. Regarding that ratio, Saanen goat meat had the most favorable characteristics. Saanen goat meat showed the highest nutritional value. On the other hand, Balkan goat meat had the lowest intramuscular fat content. Measurements of the meat color from all three groups, as well as overall acceptability, showed significant differences between breeds. Obtained results point to the impact of breed on chemical composition and fatty acid profile of goat meat.. © 2020 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

AB - The aim of this trial was to determine the impact of monobasic calcium phosphate (MCP), as source of inorganic phosphorus in broilers diet, on production performances and bone mineralization, by using computed tomography (CT). The trial included 300 broilers (Cobb 500), both sexes, from the same hatchery. Broilers were divided in three groups, by one hundred birds each. During the trial, which lasted 42 days and was divided in three phases (1-21, 21-35 and 35-42 days), groups were fed with different experimental diets. The low-P basal diet was formulated without addition of monobasic calcium phosphate, and the other 2 diets was formulated with addition of 2 different MCP (one was provided by “Elixir Group” D.O.O., Šabac, Serbia, and the other one was originating from Russia). Production results (average body weight, average daily gain, feed intake and feed to gain ratio) were monitored during the trial. At the end of experiment, on the forty-second day, right legs were collected from 6 birds in each group, in order to obtain the samples of tibia. Measurements were carried out by the CT, and the tissue density (radiodensity) was expressed in Hounsfield units (HU). Additionally, linear bone parameters were measured, such as bone length and inner and outer radii of the cross-section at half of the dyaphisis length, in order to calculate cross sectional area of medullar cavity and cortex thickness. Both experimental groups that received MCP, as a P source achieved significantly higher production results compared to the group of broilers fed with basal diet (P<0.001). Furthermore, the differences were observed between the two experimental groups - production results, as well as bone tissue density of the first experimental group (fed with addition of MCP – Elixir), was significantly higher, compared to the group fed with MCP from Russia (P<0.05). Tibia length and cross sectional area in the same group was higher, but without statistical significance (P>0.05). The results of the experiment indicated that MCP, as inorganic P source has significant impact on growth, production performances and level of mineralization of bones, and CT can be used as one of the methods in evaluation of inorganic phosphorus sources.

AB - Adequate supplementation of poultry feed is essential due to its significant roles in the physiological functions
and maintenance of the homeostasis of the organism. On the other hand, phosphorus present in feed, which
is not absorbed in GIT, is excreted in the environment. That gives an environmental impact to phosphorus
concentration in soil and water. Thus, formulation of broilers meal and avoiding the excess addition of
phosphorus is crucial. In order to more accurately determine the faecal phosphorus output and digestibility of
P from diet, the trial was conducted on 200 one-day old broilers, Cobb 500, both sexes. During the 42
experimental days, broilers were fed a diets which differed only in monocalcium phosphate origin (i.e.
experimental groups received two different MCP). Daily phosphorus intake, fecal P output were measured and
percentage of P digestibility was calculated, in two ages of broilers. Determined differences have shown the
higher level of phosphorus utilization in O-I group of broilers, but observed differences were not statistically
significant. Tested parameter may be used in estimation of the level of phosphorus which in this way merged
into the environment. Additionally, these are valuable information for correction of complete feed mixture for
broilers on phosphorus concertation according to the needs of broilers, which is one of the most important
ways of dealing with phosphorus pollution.

AB - The trial included 100 one-day-old broilers, Cobb 500, of both sexes, divided into the two groups, 50 broilers in each. The experiment lasted 42 days and was conducted in three phases: days 1-7, days 8-21 and days 22-42. The control group of broilers (C) was fed a mixture of standard composition (basal diet), while the experimental group (O-I) received the same diet but with the addition of dehydrated housefly larvae in the amount of 5% (% as fed basis) in the starter diet and 4% in grower and finisher diets. Production results (body weight, body weight gain, feed consumption and feed to gain ratio) were determined during the trial. The broilers fed larvae meal achieved statistically higher (p lt 0.001) average body weight and daily weight gain with superior feed to gain ratio, compared to the control group, but also higher feed consumption and feed conversion. Meat samples obtained from the broilers fed larvae meal were graded as more acceptable by panelists, in comparison to those obtained from the control group. The achieved results point to the fact that dehydrated housefly larvae meal can be used as an alternative source of proteins in broiler nutrition.

AB - The aim of this trial was to determine the influence of monobasic calcium phosphate (MCP), as source of inorganic phosphorus, on production results of broilers, but also to determine the bone breaking strength, which indicates the level of availability of phosphorus from mineral nutrients. The trial included 200 broilers (Cobb 500), both sexes, from the same hatch. Broilers were divided in two groups, 100 each. During the 42 experimental days, which was divided in three phases (1-21, 21-35 and 35-42 days), groups were fed with different experimental diets. One group of broilers was fed with diet supplemented with MCP, provided by “Elixir Group” D.O.O., Sabac, Serbia. The other group was fed with diets supplemented with MCP originating from Russia. During the trial, health status and mortality were monitored on daily basis. Production results (average body weight, average daily gain, feed intake and feed to gain ratio) were monitored during the trial. At the end of the trial, 6 broilers from each group were slaughtered and the tibiae bone was examined on breaking strength. Production results of the first experimental group (fed with addition of MCP-Elixir), were significantly better, compared to the group fed with MCP from Russia (p<0.05). Bone breaking strength in the same group was higher but without statistical significance (p>0.05). The results of the experiment indicated that MCP as inorganic phosphorus source and has significant impact on growth, production performances, but also on level of mineralization of bones.

AB - Isoflavones are isolated from about 300 plant species and belong to the group of phytoestrogens. Having structural similarity with estrogens, they are related to the estrogen receptors, and may exhibit estrogenic and anti-estrogenic effects. They are present in many plant nutrients (including soy, alfalfa, flax seed). The main sources of isoflavones are legumes and there are known commercial preparations of isoflavones, which are natural, safe and alternative materials that can provide an effect similar to estrogen. These compounds have effects on the health status, production characteristics of the animals (poultry, pigs), and the characteristics of the final product ingredients.

AB - Considering that more than 50% of bird species are monomorphic, the identification of gender based on phenotypic characteristics is extremely difficult. The aim of this study is sex determination in species inhabiting the Republic of Serbia, all under the state protection and declared by IUCN as endangered. DNA was isolated from feathers. Sex determination was based on sex-specific CHD gene amplified by 2550F/2718R primer set. Sexing gave good results in all 91 samples from 20 species including 6 species where molecular sexing has not previously been successful.

AB - The aim of this study was to test the feasibility and efficacy of a non-invasive molecular method for gender identification of parrots, using different types of samples and the Chromo Helicase DNA-binding (CHD) gene as a molecular marker. DNA was isolated primarily from feathers and the amplification of the CHD gene was performed using 2550F/2718R primers. In order to compare the reliability of different sources of DNA, we used buccal swab, blood and feces. All sample types exerted successful sexing results with the exception of feces samples where the success rate was 25%. Sexing was successfully determined in 239 birds belonging to 32 species of parrots. In 6 species (Amazona finschi, A. leucocephala, Aratinga aurea, Bamardius zonarius, Coracopsis nigra and Nymphicus hollandicus), 2550F/2718R primers proved to work well for the first time. Species used in this study are on the IUCN red list of threatened species. Furthermore, Amazona finschi, A. leucocephala, Cacatua moluccensis and C. sulphurea are on the list of CITES Apendix I. Since the failure in reproduction is one of the main causes of illegal trafficking of parrots, the non-invasive and universal molecular sexing method we tested may be a very useful tool in the preservation of endangered parrot species.

AB - The aim of this research was to test the CHD gene (Chromo Helicase DNA-binding gene) as a universal molecular marker for sexing birds of relatively distant species. The CHD gene corresponds to the aim because of its high degree of conservation and different lengths in Z and W chromosomes due to different intron sizes. DNA was isolated from feathers and the amplification of the CHD gene was performed with the following sets of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers: 2550F/2718R and P2/P8. Sex determination was attempted in 284 samples of 58 bird species. It was successful in 50 bird species; in 16 of those (Alopochen aegyptiacus, Ara severus, Aratinga acuticaudata, Bucorvus leadbeateri, Cereopsis novaehollandiae, Columba arquatrix, Corvus corax, C. frugilegus, Cyanoliseus patagonus, Guttera plumifera, Lamprotornis superbus, Milvus milvus, Neophron percnopterus, Ocyphaps lophotes, Podiceps cristatus, and Poicephalus senegalus), it was carried out for the first time using molecular markers and PCR. It is reasonable to assume that extensive research is necessary to define the CHD gene as a universal molecular marker for successful sex determination in all bird species (with exception of ratites). The results of this study may largely contribute to the aim. Zoo Biol 32:269-276, 2013.

AB - Serum amyloid A proteins (SAA) are very sensitive acute phase proteins, displaying multiple isoforms in plasma and different body fluids. They are currently under investigation as biomarkers of diseases. The aim of the present study was to compare the concentration and isoform expression of SAA in serum and milk of cows with bacteriologically negative milk (control group) and naturally occurring Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) subclinical mastitis (subclinical mastitis group). Somatic cell count (SCC) and bacteriological analyses were performed to establish the control and subclinical mastitis group. SAA concentration was evaluated using a commercial ELISA kit, while expression of different isoforms (serum A-SAA and milk M-SAA3 isoforms) was visualized by denaturing isoelectrical focusing and immunoblotting. The SAA concentrations in sera and milk of cows in the subclinical mastitis group were three and 100 times higher than in those from the control group of cows, respectively. Cows in the subclinical mastitis group had more acidic SAA isoforms in serum with the most prominent one at pI 5.5. This isoform was not detected in sera from the control group. Milk samples in the subclinical mastitis group contained abundant highly alkaline M-SAA3 isoforms and most of the serum isoforms, except for that at pI 5.5. In the subclinical mastitis group SAA isoforms with equivalent pI as serum isoforms accounted for 20% of the total SAA concentration in milk. There were significant differences in the concentrations and isoform patterns of SAA in serum and milk between the control and subclinical mastitis groups of cows. Also, we demonstrated that serum SAA isoforms were not transferred to milk proportion to their plasma content.

AB - Inflammation at a local and systemic level is a complex process that involves the synthesis of acute phase proteins (APPs) with multiple functions in the regulation of the inflammatory process itself. The aim of this work was to define local and systemic APPs response induced by natural Staph. aureus subclinical infection of the mammary gland in dairy cows with a different number of quarters involved. Midlactation dairy cows (n=30) were devided into three groups. First group were cows with bacteriologically negative milk samples (BN group), second group were cows with one quarter infected with Staph. aureus (SaQ1) and third group were cows with two quarters infected (SaQ2). Milk samples were analyzed for inflammation indicators: serum amyloid A (SAA) and somatic cell count (SCC). Serum samples where analyzed for SAA, haptoglobin (Hp), ceruloplasmin (Cp) and albumin concentration. Also, complete blood count (CBC) was done. SCC and SAA increased in quarter milk samples, being lowest in the BN group and highest in the SaQ2 group. In serum samples, SAA, Hp, Cp and albumin concentrations were significantly higher only in the SaQ2 group comparing with BN group. The leukocyte number, as well as hemoglobin concentration were in the physiological range in all three groups of cows. These results confirm that the magnitude of tissue injury has an impact on APPs concentration. They also demonstrate that cows having Staph. aureus sublinical infections of two mammary quarters have a more pronounced systemic APP response than cows with only one quarter involved.
