AB - Purpose: Data on gastrointestinal infections in horses in Southeastern Europe are limited; thus, this study aimed to add to the existing knowledge on this topic by reporting on the prevalence of intestinal parasites of horses in the territory of the Republic of Serbia. Methods: In the period from April 2017 to December 2018, parasitological examination of 548 samples from horses of different breed, age and sex from four regions and 18 districts of the country was performed. Coprological diagnostic was done by using qualitative methods without concentration and qualitative methods with concentration of parasitic elements. Quantification of the obtained results was performed using semi-qualitative faecal egg count. Results: Four helminthoses were detected in the examined samples: P. equorum (8.57%), O. equi (3.65%), strongylid eggs (71.17%) and Anoplocephala spp. (0.91%). The total prevalence of helminthoses was 77.19%. Monoinfections were significantly more present 70.07% compared to coinfections (7.12%). The highest prevalence of helminthoses was detected in free-ranging horses (93.10%—27/29), in autumn 86.67% (117/135) and winter 79.71% (165/207), in Šumadija and West Serbia region (100%), and in the youngest category (100%). Significant difference (p < 0.001) was detected in the prevalence of monoinfections by strongylids and O. equi and also coinfections by strongylid/P. equorum between horses of different age categories. Conclusion: Obtained results are of great contribution to clinical parasitology and pathology, especially from the aspect of animal health, welfare and preservation of horse population.

Opseg monitoringa pacijenta zavisi od inicijalne procene opšteg
stanja pacijenta, urgentnosti hirurške procedure i opremljenosti
operacione sale gde se sprovodi hirurški postupak. Svakom pacijentu
potrebno je obezbediti osnovni monitoring (praćenje telesne temperature,

AB - Prelomi dugih cevastih kostiju kod pasa najčešće nastaju usled
trauma, padova i drugih povreda. Osnovni principi pristupa sanacije
anesteziološkog protokola u zavisnosti od težine povrede i dužine trajanja same intervencije.
i šrafovi.
To podrazumeva pravilan odabir implanta i načina hirurške sanacije. Posebnu
AB - Fractures of long tubular bones in dogs are most often caused by trauma, falls and
other injuries. The basic principles of the fracture remediation approach primarily the use of
adequate stabilization of the general condition of the animal and remediation of potential,
life-threatening injuries. The use of an adequate analgesia protocol perioperatively, as well
as after the completion of the repair of a fracture of long tubular bones, can contribute
to faster recovery of the dog. After stabilization of the patient, the choice of anesthesia
protocol is chosen depending on the severity of the injury and the duration of the intervention
itself. Monitoring of vital functions and monitoring of pain are carried-out preoperatively,
intraoperatively and for several days postoperatively. The surgical approach to fractures of
long tubular bones in dogs in practice involves the use of adequate surgical procedures in
order to stabilize fracture fragments. For this purpose, various orthopedic procedures are
used with adequate use of implants. Depending on the type of fracture, intramedullary pins,
wires, plates and screws are most often used. Before starting any orthopedic procedure, it
is necessary to make a plan. Depending on the breed, age category, severity of the injury,
potential presece of primary diseases, the way the animal is kept, etc., it is necessary
to choose the most appropriate surgical approach. This means the correct choice of
implant and the method of surgical repair. Special attention should be paid to oblique and
transverse fractures of the humerus, radius, femur and tibia. All orthopedic interventions
must be performed in the most sterile conditions, respecting all the principles of asepsis
and antisepsis in order to minimize the risk of potential complications.

AB - Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) is an enzyme that has 8 isoenzyme forms, of which
GPx-1 is an obligatory intracellular enzyme, while GPx-3 is active in extracellular
fluids, especially in blood plasma. The main role of GPx is the protection of cells
from oxidative stress induced by free oxygen radicals. GPx activity is taken as a
reliable indicator of selenium status in the human and animal organism. Selenium
is introduced in organism mainly through the food chain. Ingested selenium is
incorporated in the form of selenomethionine and selenocysteine into tissue
proteins, i.e. enzymes. Detailed investigation related to the content of selenium in
feed and domestic animals were carried out in Serbia, especially in economically
significant species such as poultry, pigs, sheep and cattle. However, working coldblooded
horses, especially those that are fed exclusively with locally grown feed,
or are on pasture, have not been examined in detail so far. Due to their specific
way of breeding, they are ideal indicators of the selenium status of monogastric
herbivores in a given locality.
The goal of our study was to determine the status of selenium based on the
activity of GPx-1 and GPx-3 in blood samples of non-supplemented working
horses in the territory of central Serbia.
In our study, a total of 12 samples of horse blood taken from the localities of the
municipalities of Kraljevo, Zaječar, Valjevo and Dimitrovgrad were tested as
follows: 12 samples of blood plasma and 12 samples of washed erythrocytes.
Measurement of GPx-3 and GPx-1 activity was carried out using the Guncler
method at a wavelength of 366 nm. For each animal, during sampling, data on
gender, age, vaccination and deworming, composition and origin of the given
nutrients were recorded. The average activity of GPx-1 was 502.02 ± 91.77 μKat/l, and GPx-3 3.46 ± 1.02
μKat/l, which indicates the existence of a marginal selenium deficit in the
population of unsupplemented working horses in the territory of central Serbia.

Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) is an enzyme that has 8 isoenzyme forms, of which
GPx-1 is an obligatory intracellular enzyme, while GPx-3 is active in extracellular
fluids, especially in blood plasma.
The average activity of GPx-1 was 502.02 ± 91.77 μKat/l, and GPx-3 3.46 ± 1.02
μKat/l, which indicates the existence of a marginal selenium deficit in the
population of unsupplemented working horses in the territory of central Serbia.",

AB - An unusual case is presented of an unsuspected orbital metallic foreign body (sewing needle) in a dog. The skin entrance wound injury was undetected during two clinical examinations, likely due to the quick skin healing and punctiform nature of the wound in the skin/muscles/orbit. The most unusual characteristic of this case is the cause of the wound. The metallic foreign body could have penetrated the cornea through an oblique limbal/scleral pathway at the moment of injury, leaving no obvious signs of corneal injury in the first clinical examination. Secondly, the corneal injury perhaps occurred due to the dog rubbing its head on the floor between the initial examination and the first follow-up examination after seven days. At first, the case presented as anterior uveitis with an unknown cause. Due to quick scar formation of wounds in dogs and the fact that punctiform wounds can be difficult to detect, an orbital foreign body was not initially suspected. However, seven days afterwards, a new sign of triangular limbus-based corneal opacification appeared. This led to suspicion of a previous corneal injury and the nearby (orbital) presence of a foreign body. This diagnosis was confirmed by radiography and the intraorbital sewing needle was extracted by surgery. Lack of sophisticated techniques did not prevent an adequate diagnosis and an excellent surgical outcome.
Usled brzog zarastanja rana i formiranja ožiljka kod pasa i nedovoljno jasnih kliničkih znakova punktiformnih rana orbitalno strano telo nije bilo očekivano.

AB - Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) induces changes in expression of proteins engaged in the activity of excitatory and inhibitory systems, restores these functions and suppresses the progression of disability in experimental autoimmune encephalitis (EAE). The structural type of TMS, the arrangement as theta burst stimulation (TBS) has been applied as intermittent TBS (iTBS) and continuous TBS (cTBS) protocols to female adult DA rats. The animals were randomly divided into experimental groups: control group (C), group treated with complete Freunds adjuvant (CFA), experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) group, group treated with iTBS post EAE immunization (EAE + iTBS), group treated with cTBS post EAE immunization (EAE + cTBS), group of healthy animals treated with iTBS or cTBS. Therapeutic protocols of iTBS or cTBS in all EAE groups of animals were performed starting from 14 days post immunization (dpi), for 10 days with time point decapitation at 24 dpi. After decapitation, spinal cords were analysed for BDNF and Ki67 expression. The results revealed reduced BDNF expression in the rats spinal cord of EAE animals in the stage of remission, which was associated with increased Ki67 and GFAP expressions. Decreased Iba 1 and BDNF expression, contrary to increased Iba 1 and Ki67 expression, suggests clustered microglia in the resolution phase of EAE. Enhanced GABA expression in spinal cord sections indicates higher GABA metabolic turnover, and also GAD activity in astrocytes, or prominent activity of GABAergic neurons. Both TBS protocols induced advance BDNF expression; amongst iTBS application provoked elevating of BDNF and stabilizing of GFAP and Ki67 expressions.

Male Wistar rats were intraperitoneally treated with 1mg CdCl2/kg BW/day; orally with 178.5 mg DSF/kg BW/day for 1, 3, 10 and 21 days; and co-exposed from 22nd to 42nd day. The co-exposure nearly restored previously suppressed total superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and increased glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities; increased previously reduced glutathione reductase (GR) and total glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activities; reduced previously increased superoxide anion radical (O-2(center dot-)) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels; increased zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe), and decreased copper (Cu) (yet above control value), while magnesium (Mg) was not affected; and decreased serum alanine aminotransferases (ALT) levels. Histopathological examination showed signs of inflammation process as previously demonstrated by exposure to Cd. Overall, we ascertained partial liver redox status improvement, compared with the formerly Cd-induced impact.

AB - This study examined the potential of a new porous calcium hydroxyapatite scaffold covered with poly (lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) as a bone substitute, identifying its advantages over Geistlich Bio-Oss (R), considered the gold standard, in in vivo biofunctionality investigations. Structural and morphological properties of the new scaffold were analyzed by scanning electron and atomic force microscopy. The biofunctionality assays were performed on New Zealand white rabbits using new scaffold for filling full-thickness defects of critical size. The evaluated parameters were: the presence of macrophages, giant cells, monoocytes, plasma cells, granulocytes, neo-angiogenesis, fibroplasia, and the percentage of mineralization. Parallel biofunctionality assays were performed using Geistlich Bio-Oss (R). The appearance of bone defects 12 weeks after the new scaffold implantation showed the presence of a small number of typical immune response cells. Furthermore, significantly reduced number of capillary buds, low intensity of fibroplasia and high degree of mineralization in a lamellar pattern indicated that the inflammation process has been almost completely overcome and that the new bone formed was in the final phase of remodeling. All biofunctionality assays proved the new scaffolds suitability as a bone substitute for applications in maxillofacial surgery. It showed numerous biological advantages over Geistlich Bio-Oss (R) which was reflected mainly as a lower number of giant cells surrounding implanted material and higher degree of mineralization in new formed bone.

AB - A synthetic bone substitute based on calcium hydroxyapatite (CHA) and poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA), described in this paper, was synthesized to fulfill specific requirements like biodegradability, satisfying mechanical properties, optimal porosity and nanotopology, osteoinductive and osteoconductive properties, and so forth. Structural and morphological properties of the new scaffold were analyzed by micro computed tomography and scanning electron microscopy, while its physicochemical properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. In vivo biological investigations of the synthesized scaffold were conducted over the cutaneous irritation and biofunctionality assays on rabbits and the test of acute systemic toxicity on mice. The results showed that the scaffold is not irritant and that it does not exhibit any symptoms of acute toxicity. Biofunctionality assays which include evaluation of the presence of various cells of immune response, the presence of neoangiogenesis, percentage of mineralization of newly formed bone, and fibroplasia in the tissue indicated that the new scaffold is suitable for the application in maxillofacial and dental surgery as a bone substitute. Also, it showed significant advantages over commercial product Geistlich Bio-Oss(R) from the aspect of some parameters of immunological response.

AB - The aim of the research was to assess the effects of physical activity of various intensity on the degree of damage to certain organs resulting from increased free radical production, as well as the adaptability of the organism to physical exercise. Two groups of healthy 3-5-year-old full-blooded racehorses were assessed. The first one ran a 2400-meter gallop race, which is considered a short-lasting, intense physical activity; lipid status was assessed prior to, and 48 and 72 h after the race. The second group ran a forty-kilometer endurance ride, which is a long-lasting moderate physical activity; the lipid status was assessed immediately before, on finishing and 48, 72, 96, 120 and 144 h after the race. The total activity of LDH changed 72 h and 96 h following the gallop race (p>0.05), whilst the maximum activity was measured immediately after the endurance ride. By means of electrophoresis LDH in all the horses 5 isoforms were detected. The activity of LDH1 72 h after the gallop race significantly rose in comparison to the one before the race (p lt 0.05), whilst the activity of all other isoenzymes, LDH2-LDH5, did not change significantly (p>0.05). Following the endurance ride LDH1 activity rose at all sampling times, reaching the maximum at 96 h and 144 h in comparison to the values both before and on finishing the ride (p lt 0.01). The increase in the activity of LDH2 was significantly higher 48 h, 72 h, 96 h and 120 h (p lt 0.05) after the race in comparison to that before the race, and at 48 h, 72 h, 96 h, 120 h and 144 h (p lt 0.05) in comparison to the values on finishing the race. LDH3 activity significantly decreased and LDH5 rose immediately after the endurance ride (p lt 0.01), whilst LDH4 significantly rose at all times following the endurance ride (p lt 0.01). The CK activity pointed to high, medium and low degree of adaptation of horses to physical activity. The concentrations of total proteins, albumins and globulins remained within the physiological range at all sampling times, with the exception of 96 h after the endurance ride, when the fall in albumin concentration was significant (p lt 0.01). Long-lasting physical activity of low intensity leads to cellular damage in the myocardium, muscles, liver and to hypoalbuminaemia, which is a consequence of free radical production.
Aktivnosti izoforme LDH3 ispoljava statistički značajan pad, a LDH5 povećanje neposredno nakon endjuransa (p lt 0,01), dok LDH4 značajno raste u svim ispitivanim vremenskim intervalima posle endjuransa (p lt 0,01).

AB - The mink is a strict carnivore and a seasonal breeder, which may be used as an experimental model for other carnivores. Using anatomical methods, 32 brains of the N. American mink were examined. It was found that the brain consists of four ventricles. Also, it was noted that the posterior horn was missing and that the olfactory recess was present in the lateral ventricle, a large-size interthalamic connection was present in the third ventricle, and a flat, necklace like bottom in the fourth ventricle. Only recently, the ins and outs of the mink’s anatomical structure have begun to absorb the attention of anatomists. Apparently, it is related to the fact that fury animals, among them the mink, are being domesticated. For this reason and because of easy access to the material, the purpose of brain dissection is to familiarize with the three dimensional structure of the brain and teach one of the great methods of studying the brain: looking at its structure.

AB - Galectins are evolutionarily very old glycan-binding proteins with pleiotropic roles in innate and adaptive immunity. Until now 15 galectins have been identified in mammals with wide tissue distribution, intra and extracellular, with many roles in diverse immune cell processes of pathogen recognition, and fine tuning of immune responses. They act as pathogen recognition receptors (PRRs), recognizing pathogenassociated molecular patterns (PAMPs) on microorganisms and activate innate immune response. Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is a chimeric molecule, and a member of the galectin family, with proinflammatory and immunoregulatory functions. Gal-3 is a potent leukocyte activator, and is very important in leukocyte adhesion and extravasation, acting directly as an adhesive molecule. The aim of this study was to investigate how Gal-3 influences inflammatory process in experimentally induced periapical inflammatory lesions in Gal-3 knockout C57BL/6 mice one month, six weeks, and four months after disease induction. Periapical inflammatory lesions were experimentally induced using stomatological round bur. Initial dental pulp exposure to dental plaque anaerobic pathogens like P.gingivalis, P.intermedia, F.nucleatum, A.actinomycetemcomitans and others leads to severe periapical periodontitis. P.gingivalis lipopolysacharide (LPS), TLR2 and TLR4 ligand, stimulate antigen presenting cells (APC), like macrophages and dendritic cells, to produce various pro and antiinflammatory cytokines. Gal-3 is considered to be a negative regulator of LPS functions, which is why the level of cytokine production in Gal-3 negative macrophages is much higher. A significantly decreased number of neutrophils in periapical inflammatory infiltrates, with an equal number of macrophages and lymphocytes in wild and knockout mice, suggests that absence of this molecule decreases inflammatory processes in periodontium. Neutrophil granulocytes are the most numerous infiltrating cells in periapical lesions of wild type mice and macrophages in Gal-3 knockout mice. Real-time PCR detection of cytokine gene expression on mRNA level, a month after disease induction, showed a significant increase of proinflammatory cytokine IL-1β, IL-6, IL-17, IL-12, IL-23, IL-4 and IL-18 mRNA levels in Gal-3 knockout mice, compared to wild type and significant decrease of TNFα, IFNγ, IL-1α, IL-21, IL-10, and TGFβ mRNA levels...
Prodor patogenih anaeroba dentalnog plaka P.gingivalis, P.intermedia, F.nucleatum, A.actinomycetemcomitans i drugih u zubnu pulpu vodi do razvoja snažnog periodontitisa.

AB - The research included 520 dairy cows on 64 mini-farms in mountainous Serbian areas, with the goal to acquire an insight on acropodium diseases frequency in dairy cows, as well as distribution of hoof alterations. In 56.25% of farms, animals were kept tied in the stable, while 43.75% were grazing regularly or occasionally. Only 10.94% of farms were free of hoof acropodium alterations. Extremely bad hygienic conditions were noted in 18.75% of farms, where 74.01% of animals had acropodium lesions. Based on clinical analysis of 520 dairy cows, 388 of them were diagnosed with acropodium alternations: overgrown hooves (in 21.91% of animals), shoe-like hooves (7.22%), scissors-like (17.27%) and spiral hooves (8.76%). Wounded acropodium skin was diagnosed in 1.8%, interdigital phlegmon in 9.02%, aseptic pododermatitis in 3.61%, digital dermatitis in 4.89%, interdigital dermatitis in 3.09%, hoof ulcer in 3.35%, interdigital blister in 4.89%, hollow hoof wall in 6.18%, horn wall rupture in 0.51%, heel abscess in 3.09%, tendovaginitis in 3.85% and crown joint displacement in 0.26% of animals. We found no pathological lesions of the acropodium in 132 animals (25.38%).
AB - If applied in high doses and for a longer period, aminoglycoside antibiotics are potential risk for renal tissue and may cause acute renal failure (ARF). ARF is a syndrome that develops from progressive nephron damage resulting in the loss of renal function. Our investigations were conducted to evaluate the histopathological changes in the structure of kidney, following application of 80 mg/kg/24 h gentamicin during 7 days. Functional capacity of kidneys was evaluated by endogenous creatinine clearance. Our results indicate that gentamicin, in doses 20 times higher than the therapeutic ones, cause progressive ARF starting from the 3rd day of application. Histopathological changes were characterized by cloudy swelling at the beginning of the observation period, followed by vacuolar and reticular dystrophy and later on necrosis of the tubulocytes in the proximal nephron segments. During the experiment, histopathological lesions were intensifying and were manifested by the appearance of lympho-histiocytic infiltrate in the interstitium and furthermore by hypercellularity of glomerules.
Inicijalne histopatološke prornene karakteriše pojava mutnog bubrenja (3. dan), a tokom ogleda one se razvijaju u smislu pojave vakuolarne i rctikularne distrofije, sve do nekroze epitelnih ćelija proksimalnih bubrežnih kanalića.
