The effect of toluene on oxidative processes in rat blood

AB  - This study was designed to investigate the effects of toluene treatment on oxidative stress in rat blood. Since toluene metabolism produces reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, it was hypothesized that the toluene treatment would: 1) provoke changes in the activities of antioxidant enzymes, 2) impair the integrity of the cell membrane and 3) induce structural changes in the plasma proteins. Female Wistar rats were treated with toluene intraperitonally, at a daily dose of 0.38 mmol/kg body weight for 12 days, and 5 mmol/kg body weight for 6 days, respectively, with propylene glycol as the carrier. Toluene significantly increased superoxide dismutase activity at low doses, catalase activity at high doses and the level of erythrocytes malondialdehyde in both treated groups when compared to the control group. The nitrite ( ? 2 NO ) level in both treated groups was not different from that in the control animals. Toluene caused oxidative modification of plasma proteins and, consequently, changes in the concentration of glycoproteins and lipoproteins when compared to the control group. The observed alterations indicate that toluene treatment might be involved in free radical processes.
AB  - U ovom radu je ispitivan uticaj toluena na oksidativni stres u krvi pacova. S obzirom na to da metabolizam toluena dovodi do stvaranja reaktivnih kiseoničnih i azotovih vrsta, pretpostavljeno je da tretiranje pacova različitim koncentracijama toluena dovodi do 1) promene u aktivnosti enzima antioksidativne odbrane, 2) narušavanja integriteta ćelijske membrane i 3) strukturnih promena kod plazma proteina. Ženke pacova soja Wistar su podeljene u tri grupe: I grupa - kontrolna, II i III grupa - pacovi tretirani i.p. toluenom svakodnevno 12 i 6 dana, dozom od 0,38 mmol/kg telesne mase i 5,0 mmol/kg telesne mese. Toluen je statistički značajno povećavao aktivnost SOD u II grupi i aktivnost CAT u III grupi, dok je sadržaj MDA bio značajno povećan u obe grupe u poređenju sa kontrolnom grupom. Sniženje? 2 NO u obe tretirane grupe nije bilo statistički značajno u odnosu na kontrolnu grupu. Toluen je doveo do oksidativnih promena plazma proteina, a samim tim i do promene koncentracije gliko- i lipoproteina u odnosu na kontrolnu grupu. Dokazane promene ukazuju na to da tretiranje toluenom izaziva slobodno-radikalske procese.

Biochemical ingredient of colostrum cows Holstein-Frisian rase

AB  - The aim of the research of this paper has been to examine concentration of the main colostrum ingredients after calving, when mammary gland activity is very intensive before the forthcoming lactation. Holstein-Frisian cows have been chosen for this experiment. The experiment has included cows that have had at least one (n=5) up to more lactation cycles (n=8). The cows yielding 7000 litters of milk p.a. in the previous lactation and have minimum two calving cycle. Of each animal one samples of colostrum have been taken. The results obtained show that there are statistical value (p lt 0.001) in concentration of the proteins, lipids, lactose, calcium, phosphorous, dry supstances examined in cows colostrums with one lactation, while another cows group with more lactateon, between three and seven, concentration of proteins, lipids and lactose is statistical values is p lt 0.01, calcium, dry supstances and pH statistical values is p lt 0.001, while concentration of phosphorus is on statistical values p lt 0.1. With compare those groups concentrations of phosphorus and pH statistical values is p lt 0.1, while concentration in proteins, lipids and lactose, statistical values is not proof.
AB  - Ispitivali smo koncentracije glavnih sastojaka kolostruma krava Holštajn-Frizijske rase, vezanog sistema držanja, koje su podeljene u dve grupe. U prvoj grupi su bile krave koje su imale jednu laktaciju, u drugoj grupi su krave sa više laktacija. Analizom pojedinačnih vrednosti unutar grupa dokazano je da postoji statistički vrlo značajna razlika u sadržaju sastojaka kolostruma kod krava koje su imale jednu laktaciju. Kod druge grupe krava, razlika u sadržaju ispitivanih parametara je na nižem nivou statističke značajnosti. Međusobnim poređenjem ovih grupa dokazana je značajna razlika u sadržaju fosfora (p lt 0.05).

AB  - The paper presents the preliminary results of the study on environmental and health effects due to the use of depleted uranium (DU) ammunition during NATO bombing of Serbia and Montenegro in 1999. The blood samples of sheep were collected randomly in the region of Bujanovac, in 2003. To assess the possible effects of DU on animal health, some of the relevant biochemical and hematological blood parameters were analyzed: concentration of RBC MDA (red blood cells malondialdehide), erythrocytes superoxid dismutase (SOD) activity, hemoglobin concentration and number of erythrocytes (Er). Functional activity of leukocytes (Le) was performed using NBT reduction and adhesion test. The results are considered in correlation with the data on the content of DU that entered the environment during the bombing. The obtained results on peripheral blood hematological and biochemical parameters indicated that animals were under violent oxidative stress. However, there were not enough data, especially on the content of DU in the environmental samples in the region (soils, vegetation, feed) to enable a conclusive correlation of the blood data with the effects of DU.
AB  - U radu su prikazani preliminarni rezultati ispitivanja mogućih efekata municije sa osiromašenim uranijumom upotrebljene tokom NATO bombardovanja Srbije i Crne Gore 1999. godine, na zdravlje životinja i životnu sredinu. Uzorci krvi su sakupljani od ovaca, metodom slučajnog izbora, u proleće 2003 godine. U cilju ispitivanja mogućeg dejstva osiromašenog uranijuma na zdravlje životinja, analizirani su neki od relevantnih biohemijskih i hematoloških parametara: koncentracija malondialdehida u eritrocitima, aktivnost eritrocitne superoksid dismutaze, koncentracija hemoglobina, broj eritrocita i dr. Funkcionalna aktivnost leukocita je ispitana testom NBT redukcije i adhezije. Rezultati su razmotreni u korelaciji sa podacima o sadržaju osiromašenog uranijuma koji je dospeo u životnu sredinu tokom bombardovanja. Hematološki i biohemijski parametri periferne krvi ukazuju da su životinje bile izložene jakom oksidativnom stresu. Međutim, nepostojanje pouzdanih podataka o sadržaju DU u području sa koga su ispitivane životinje, ne omogućava ustanovljavanje pouzdane korelacije između dobijenih rezultata i efekata osiromašenog uranijuma koji je dospeo u životnu sredinu.
