AB - Almost every aspect of an animal’s behaviour is associated with exposure to some type of parasite. Foraging is a major route of infection for environmental and trophically transmitted bacteria and helminths; and social behaviour contributes to the dissemination of various contact-transmitted infectious agents; mating behaviour is critical in the transmission of sexually transpolnomitted bacteria, protozoa, and viruses; explorative behaviour is associated with transmission of various ecto- and endoparasites. Behavior also plays a central role in how hosts defend themselves against parasites and it is the first line of defense against infection. Different behavioral strategies change during hosts infection/infestation with parasites for a number of reasons. Parasites have a wide range of ways to manipulate host behavior to improve their own fitness, or to change animal behavior to their own advantage. The above-mentioned processes can be the result of immune reactions or pathological changes occurring during parasite infection. Some of these methods aim to increase the rate of transmission from intermediate to definitive host by increasing or reducing activity that results in increased vulnerability of the intermediate host to predation, suppressing a host’s fear response, or its ability to recognize a predator (the mouse and the cat). Others aim to downregulate the reproductive fitness of a host (parasitic castration), allowing the parasite to maximize nutrient-taking from the host.
On the other hand, during evolution hosts have counteracted by evolving resistance to parasite infections and/or developing a tolerance against their harmful effects. These defense mechanisms include reducing the chances of getting infected via a change in habitat or food preference; and recognizing and avoiding infected individuals, both as potential prey species and sexual partners. If an infection could not be prevented, the parasites can be attacked or removed by the host’s hygienic behavior, such as scratching, dust and water bathing. Behavioral changes (lethargy, inappetance, scratching, general malaise) are generally some of the most common reasons why an owner brings an animal to a veterinary practitioner, and these clinical signs can be indicative of a parasite infection.

AB - This article presents findings from an assessment of owners’ investments in the welfare of African pygmy
hedgehogs (Atelerix albiventris), focusing on feeding, housing, enrichment, hygiene, and health practices.
Participants were divided into three groups based on how they acquired information about hedgehog care:
G1 consulted veterinarians, G2 consulted other owners and breeders, and G3 consulted the internet. Group
G3 comprised the largest portion of participants (45%), while G1 had the fewest (22%). The majority of
owners fed their hedgehogs commercial food (55%), supplemented with live worms, dry insects, or plants
(79%). Most hedgehogs were housed in units smaller than 0.5 square meters (68%), and 84% lacked a hiding
"house". Some owners did not provide a hedgehog wheel (17%). Owners consulting veterinarians (G1) were
more likely to use commercial food (P < 0.05), spend time interacting with their pets (P < 0.01), wash the
wheel daily (P < 0.01), seek veterinary check-ups upon acquisition (P < 0.01), schedule preventive examinations (P < 0.01), and consult veterinarians for health changes (P < 0.01) compared to internet consulters (G3). All G1 owners had hedgehog wheels, significantly more than G2 owners (P < 0.01), where 27%
lacked them. Significant differences existed between G1 and G2 in wheel washing frequency, post-acquisition veterinary visits (P < 0.001), preventive check-ups (P < 0.001), and contacting veterinarians for health
changes (P < 0.01). Overall, owners across all groups exhibited differences in care practices, including some
errors such as inadequate housing.

AB - Pet food manufacturers aim to balance the palatability with the nutritional value of their products. Ensuring that young canines receive the best nourishment is crucial, while also promoting long-lasting engagement and satisfaction during mealtime. The study aimed to investigate if the nutritional content of food can affect food preferences in 2-month-old Sharplanina shepherd dogs and the development of neophobia when introduced to a new diet. Three different dietary plans were tested, each with varying percentages of an
imal-derived proteins (97% in A, 77% in B, and 94% in C). Observations of behavior were documented on camera at the beginning and end of a 10-day feeding cycle. The observations were made during the scheduled feeding times of 7 a.m., noon, and 5 p.m. According to the study, puppies showed neophobic behavior when a new diet was introduced. The puppies displayed a notable decrease in meal rate of
sumption, heightened distraction during diet consumption, and increased hesitation on the first day of each new diet, specifically on day 9 and day 10. Post-consumption interest peaked significantly on day 9 and day 10, particularly when dogs consumed diet C. Through the study, it was observed that Diet C had an impact on the puppies’ feed preferences, indicating a possible link between the diet’s nutritional content and their food preferences. Based on the study results, it appears that puppies need at least 9 days to reduce
phobia and adapt to new food flavors and feeding schedules.

AB - Dogs are the most popular pets worldwide. Close contact between dogs and people
increases the risk of transmission of various zoonotic parasitic infections. Given the importance of
veterinary medicine in preserving the One Health concept, the aim of this research was to identify
intestinal parasites that may have zoonotic potential and to evaluate risk factors (individual and
environmental). The research was conducted in Serbia in 2022 and 2023 on 382 owned dogs, using
qualitative methods of coprological examination with a concentration on parasitic elements. The overall
prevalence of intestinal parasites was 62.6%, with the following detected: protozoa: Cystoisospora
spp. (9.2%), Sarcocystis spp. (4.5%), Neospora caninum/Hammondia spp. (3.7%), Giardia intestinalis
(11.8%); nematoda: Toxocara canis (11.5%), Toxascaris leonina (4.2%), family Ancylostomatidae (38.0%),
Trichuris vulpis (21.5%), Capillaria spp. (10.5%); trematoda: Alaria alata (1.6%) and cestodes from the
Taeniidae family (1.3%). Factors like age, size and coat length, as well as the way of living, attitude
and diet were linked to a significantly higher (p < 0.05) prevalence of intestinal parasites. Based on the
results of coprological diagnostics, this research indicates the importance of educating dog owners,
conducting routine parasitological tests on their pets and regular deworming strategies.

AB - This study is the first report on the finding and determination of the presence of the Capillaria plica species in hunting dogs from five different regions in Serbia (Zapadno Backi, Juzno Backi, Kolubarski, Branicevski and Toplicki regions). This study was carried out on a significant number of hunting dogs to gather valuable epizootiological data on the prevalence of urinary capillariosis. It also assessed the risk variables that affect the occurrence, persistence and transmission of these helminthoses in hunting dogs. An examination of the urine sediment of hunting dogs in the period from 2020 to 2023, showed that the total prevalence of C. plica was 20.45%, with the highest number of diagnosed cases in the area of Kolubarski and Toplicki regions. Urinary capillariosis was predominantly found in dogs that were hunting 2 months ago (66.66%), it showed seasonality in occurrence with 38.88% of cases at the end of winter/beginning of spring and in autumn, and in terms of racial predisposition, it was the most prevalent in German short-haired birders (22.22%). A highly significant difference (p<0.001) in the prevalence of C. plica was found between dogs of different ages, with the highest prevalence in dogs aged 2-8 years (13.64%); in terms of diet, in dogs fed with a combined diet (13.64%); in dogs that went hunting 2 months ago (13.64%); and individuals whose urine was sampled by cystocentesis (17.05%). Between dogs with urinary symptoms and asymptomatic dogs, a significant difference (p<0.05) in the prevalence of this nematode was found in dogs with a manifested clinical picture (14.77%). Infections of domestic carnivores with this ubiquitous parasite of the urinary tract lead clinicians into certain delusions during diagnosis, because they are mostly asymptomatic. The high prevalence of urinary capillariosis diagnosed in foxes in Europe and the colonization of urban areas by foxes may increase the risk of infection of domestic dogs and cats with this nematode, especially in hunting dogs during hunting. The most reliable prevention involves regular parasitological examinations of urine and planned deworming of these animals 2-4 times a year, and as well as checking the effectiveness of the performed treatments.

Dogs are the most popular pets worldwide. Close contact between dogs and people increases the risk of transmission of different zoonotic parasitic infections. Given the importance of veterinary medicine in preserving the One Health concept, the aim of this research was to identify the intestinal parasites that may have zoonotic potential and affect the health of dogs and to evaluate the risk factors (individual and environmental factors) that determine the occurrence of intestinal parasitic infections. The research was conducted on the territory of the Republic of Serbia in 2022 and 2023 on 382 owned dogs, using qualitative methods of coprological examination with concentration of parasitic elements. The overall prevalence of intestinal parasites was 58.7%, with detected protozoa: Cystoisospora spp. (9.2%), Sarcocystis spp. (4.5%), Neospora caninum/Hammondia spp. (3.7%), Giardia intestinalis (11.8%); nematoda: Toxocara canis (11.5%), Toxascaris leonina (4.2%), fam. Ancylostomatidae (38.0%), Trichuris vulpis (21,5%), Capillaria spp. (10.5%); trematoda: Alaria alata (1.6%) and cestodes from the Taeniidae family (1.3%). By analyzing the individual risk factors, a significantly higher (p<0.05) prevalence of intestinal parasites was found in dogs younger than one year (83.3%) and in dogs between one and five years old (64.4%). By analyzing the environmental risk factors, a significantly higher (p<0.001) prevalence was found in the dogs that were kept outdoor (67.7%) and indoor/outdoor (72.0%), as well as in the category of hunting dogs (81.6%). Additionally, a significantly higher (p<0.05) prevalence of intestinal parasites was found in the category of dogs fed combined diet (72.5%). Based on the results of coprological diagnostics, this research indicates the importance of educating dog owners, conducting routine parasitological tests on their pets and regular deworming strategies.",

Prostirku
čine različiti materijali organskog i neorganskog porekla, najčešće sporedni proizvodi
poljoprivrede i šumarstva i njihove mešavine.
prostirke i povećanu emisiju štetnih gasova (amonijaka, ugljen-dioksida i vodonik-sulfida).
i emisiju štetnih gasova, doprinoseći boljem i kvalitetnijem vazduhu unutar
objekta. Sve ovo pozitivno utiče na zdravstveni status i proizvodne performanse pilića
u tovu.

AB - The role of wildlife in maintaining infectious diseases in veterinary medicine is often neglected, although the
disease eradication process in domestic animals is continuously affected by the risk of pathogens transmission
from wildlife as a primary source. The main aim of this paper was to estimate the prevalence and distribution of
selected infectious diseases in wild ruminants in Serbia. In total, 259 sera from wild ruminants were tested for
specific antibodies to bluetongue virus, Schmallenberg virus, Bovine viral diarrhea/border disease virus, Capripox
virus, West Nile fever virus, Bovine herpes virus-1, Coxiella burnetii, Brucella spp., and Leptospira spp.
Specific Capripox virus and Leptospira spp. antibodies were not detected in any of the 259 wild ruminant
samples. Although one animal was detected positive for BVDV/BDV specific antibodies, with 99.8% confidence,
the prevalence of BVD within this population could be very low i.e. essentially free from BVD infection. One and
three positive animals were detected for Brucella spp. and Coxiella burnetii antibodies, respectively. Bovine herpes
virus-1 specific antibodies were detected in 20.85% of the samples. The estimated seroprevalence of vector-borne
diseases was 20.5% for Schmallenberg disease, 34.3% for West Nile fever, and 38.6% for Bluetongue.
Considering the reported results, wildlife health status is a result of different factors in complex relation, such
as the presence of disease in domestic animals, disease nature, pathogen characteristics, environmental factors,
presence, and vector competence. Wildlife should be considered not only as a risk but as a source of important
information on disease distribution and its indicators.

AB - The often-overlooked importance of wildlife in spreading and maintaining animals' infectious diseases, especially their impact on complicating the eradication of diseases in domestic animals, highlights the need for thorough research. In this study, we wanted to ascertain the seroprevalence and spatial distribution of selected infectious diseases among wild ruminant populations in Serbia. An analysis was performed testing 259 wild ruminant sera samples, for the presence of antibodies to certain pathogens, including bluetongue virus, Schmallenberg virus, Bovine viral diarrhoea/border disease virus, Capripox virus, West Nile fever virus, Bovine herpes virus-1, Coxiella burnetii, Brucella spp., and Leptospira spp. Antibodies against Capripox virus and Leptospira spp., were not detected, suggesting their absence in the studied population. Antibodies against Bovine viral diarrhoea/border disease virus were detected in only one sample with 98.8% confidence, implying a minimal presence of Bovine viral diarrhoea and potentially indicating a status of near eradication within the examined population. Furthermore, antibodies against Brucella spp. and Coxiella burnetii were detected only in a few animals, one and three animals, respectively, while Bovine herpes virus-1 antibodies were found in 20.85% of the samples. Seroprevalence for vector-borne diseases was recorded at 20.5% for Schmallenberg disease, 34.3% for West Nile fever, and 38.6% for Bluetongue. These results elucidate the complex interdependencies influencing the health of wildlife, which include the prevalence of diseases in domestic animals, pathogen traits, environmental conditions, and vector capabilities. Therefore, it is imperative to consider wildlife not solely as a vector of risk, but as a pivotal source of information for the understanding of disease prevalence and the mechanisms of its spread..

The often-overlooked importance of wildlife in spreading and maintaining animals' infectious diseases, especially their impact on complicating the eradication of diseases in domestic animals, highlights the need for thorough research. Therefore, it is imperative to consider wildlife not solely as a vector of risk, but as a pivotal source of information for the understanding of disease prevalence and the mechanisms of its spread..",

godine. Međutim, pritisak da se ograniči i smanji primena antimikrobnih
lekova je sve veći. Komitet Evropskog parlamenta za životnu sredinu,
javno zdravlje i hranu (ENVI) je 13. jula 2021. godine, podneo
predlog rezolucije Evropskom parlamentu (EP), kojom se antimikrobni
lekovi označeni od strane Svetske zdravstvene organizacije (WHO)
kontrolom proizvodnjom i prometom veterinarskih lekova.
Stručno usavršavanje u vidu stručne specijalizacija iz Veterinarske
farmakologije i toksikologije, predviđeno usvojenim planom i programom,
veterinarske medicine, farmacije i medicine.

AB - Statistička analiza laboratorijskih rezultata i njihova prezentacija
na interaktivnoj tabli igraju značajnu ulogu u svim oblastima veterinarske
medicine. Kroz sistematsko prikupljanje podataka o zdravlju životinja,
veterinarski stručnjaci mogu identifikovati obrasce i trendove koji
ukazuju na potencijalne zdravstvene izazove.
Laboratorijski rezultati pružaju veliki broj informacija o biohemijskim
parametrima, hematološkim pokazateljima kao i o prisustvu infektivnih
agenasa. Statistička analiza ovih podataka omogućava doktorima
veterinarske medicine procenu prevalencije bolesti, identifikaciju
rizičnih populacija i planiranje preventivnih mera. Korišćenje naprednih
statističkih metoda olakšava preciznije tumačenje rezultata,
što pomaže bržem i tačnijem donošenju odluka u veterinarskoj praksi.
Prezentacija rezultata na interaktivnoj tabli dodatno poboljšava
komunikaciju između stručnjaka, omogućavajući im da zajednički
analiziraju podatke, postavljaju hipoteze i usklađuju strategije intervencija.
Ova tehnologija olakšava vizuelizaciju podataka pomoću grafikona
i interaktivne kartografije, čime se pojednostavljuje komunikacija
unutar stručnog tima.
Kombinacija statističke analize laboratorijskih rezultata i interaktivne
prezentacije na tabli omogućava unapređenje veterinarske prakse
i efikasan odgovor na izazove u oblasti zdravlja životinja.

AB - Eggs have an important role in human nutrition and are an important source of protein, fat and trace
elements. The production and consumption of eggs in the world has been increasing in recent decades. The
consumption of eggs has long been associated with negative effects on human health, mainly due to their
cholesterol content. However, it is now known that the level of cholesterol in the serum is influenced by
several other factors such as genetic predisposition, hormonal status and eating habits, and not only cholesterol
from eggs. In recent years, the foods that are used daily in people’s diet are not only intended to satisfy the
needs in basic nutrients, but food is expected to prevent food-related diseases and acquire a better immune
status. By using specific nutritional strategies, it is possible to produce functional food that, in addition to basic
nutrients, also contains components that participate in preserving health and reducing the risk of disease. A
low concentration of selenium in the soil, and consequently in the nutrients used in feed, can cause a deficiency
of this microelement in animals. Deficiency symptoms also occur in humans through foods of animal origin,
which significantly weakens the system of antioxidant protection in the body. The utilization of selenium in
animals depends on the chemical form in which it is found in the meal. Selenium, which is used as an additive
in vitamin-mineral premixes in feed for laying hens, is present in one of two basic forms: organically bound
to amino acids (selenocysteine and selenomethionine) or in the form of an inorganic salt (most often sodium
selenite). After entering the body through a meal, selenium is incorporated into tissue proteins, which creates
its reserve. Deposited selenium in the body is in an inactive state and in cases of oxidative stress or selenium
deficiency in feed, it changes to an active form. The source of selenium in feed mixtures for laying hens has an
effect on the selenium content of eggs. By adding organic selenium to laying eggs, amounts of 20-25 μg per
egg can be achieved, which is about 30% of the recommended daily intake for humans. For the production of
such eggs, it is necessary to add organic selenium in the amount of 0.3-0.5 mg/kg to the laying feed. Organic
sources of selenium have better biological availability and the content of selenium in table eggs is more stable.

AB - The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of the immunostimulant Mycobacterium Cell Wall Fraction (MCWF) on
the treatment of S. aureus SCM by intravenous application. The study included 45 HF dairy cows in 2nd and 3rd month
after parturition divided into three groups (n = 15 per group): the MC + group – cows with S. aureus SCM treated with
MCWF; the MC- group – cows with S. aureus SCM, with no treatment; and the C group – the control group of healthy
cow with no treatment. Samples were collected 0th (I sample), 7th (II), and 14th day (III) from the day of SCM diagnosis
and on day 21st (IV). A greater influx of leukocytes was confirmed into milk after 7 days after MCWF treatment in
MC + group, which was followed by increase of WBC and LYM in blood. These results support the hypothesis of effective
action of MCWF, and in quarters with lower-grade infection, bacteriological cure was achieved. The MC- group had
a statistically higher concentration of TBARS and CAT activity in milk, while MC + group had lower blood serum LDH
activity, which indicates a positive effect of the MCWF application and a lower exposure of the tissue to lipide peroxidation
and inflammation caused by S. aureus. The application of MCWF would give new possibilities in the prevention and
therapy of mammary gland diseases without fear of the presence of residues and the emergence of bacterial resistance.
In future studies, the effects of local and systemic application of MCWF in the treatment of S. aureus SCM should be
compared.

AB - Avian coccidiosis compromises welfare and production performance, increases susceptibility to bacterial infections and leads to substantial economic and production losses upon the poultry industry. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of a mixed coccidiosis (Eimeria acervulina, Eimeria maxima, Eimeria tenella and Eimeria necatrix) challenge on oxidative stress biomarkers, performance indices, carcass and meat quality of broilers. Broilers challenged with coccidiosis had higher concentrations of catalase, glutathione-S-transferase and malondialdehyde and lower concentration of superoxide dismutases at all sampling days. The same group of broilers had a lower feed intake on day 21 and 35, and a lower daily weight gain and body weight on day 35. Healthy broilers had higher hot and cold carcass weights and breast weight, but a lower back and pelvis weight. Also, healthy broilers produced better meat quality in terms of higher water-holding capacity (lower drip and thawing loss in breast and thigh muscle) and less yellow colour (lower b* value in breast and thigh muscle). Chemical composition of healthy broiler meat was better in terms of higher content of dry matter, ash and protein in breast muscle. In conclusion, the presence of coccidiosis in broilers resulted in impaired welfare, poor performance indices and lower carcass and meat quality

AB - The supplementation of antimicrobial growth promoters (AGPs) has been banned in many
countries because of the emergence of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens in poultry products and
the environment. Probiotics have been broadly studied and demonstrated as a promising AGP
substitute. Our study is centred on the effects of a multi-strain Bacillus-based probiotic product
on broiler production performance and gut microbial profile in a dexamethasone-induced leaky
gut challenge. Two hundred and fifty-six broiler chicks were hatched and randomly assigned into
four groups (wheat-soybean meal basal diet (BD) = non-supplemented control (C), BD supplemented
with dexamethasone in week 4 (CD), BD containing a probiotic from day one (P), and BD containing
a probiotic from day one and supplemented with dexamethasone during challenge week 4 (PD)).
The production performance and caecal, gizzard, jejunal lumen and jejunal mucosa swab microbiota
were studied by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The Bacillus probiotic product significantly improved
production performance and altered caecal gut microbiota (p ≤ 0.05), but no significant impact on
microbiota was observed in other gut sections.

AB - This study aimed to measure the total arsenic content deposited in the ovaries of
three consecutive generations of mice. The animals were treated with two different
concentrations to determine whether histological changes were caused in the ovaries.
The control group of mice received tap water, whereas the experimental groups were
given different concentrations of dissolved arsenic (III)-oxide. The arsenic content in
the ovaries in both experimental groups increased with each generation. The highest
content was recorded in the third generation of the second experimental group. Between
the two experimental groups in each generation, significant differences in the average
number of corpora lutea and ovarian follicles were identified. Arsenic caused structural
changes in the ovaries in both experimental groups in all three consecutive generations.

have a significant impact on the poultry industry. Managing gut microbiota is an
important determinant of poultry health and performance. Introducing precision
glycans as feed additives adds another dimension to this complex environment. The
glycans play pivotal roles in supporting gut health and immunological processes and
are likely to limit antibiotic usage while enhancing intestinal well‐being and overall
poultry performance. This study explores precision glycan product as a feed additive
supplemented at a continuous dose of 900 g per tonne of feed, in a free‐range
production system on a large commercial farm. Forty thousand 17‐week‐old pullets
were randomly allocated to one of two separated sections of the production shed,
with individual silos and egg‐collecting belts. The flock performance, gut microbiota
and its functionality were analysed throughout the laying cycle until 72 weeks of
age. The results demonstrated that introducing precision glycans improved a range
of performance indicators, including reduced cumulative mortality, especially during
a major smothering event, where the birds pile up until they suffocate. There was
also significantly increased hen‐housed egg production, reduced gut dysbiosis score
and undigested feed, increased number of goblet cells and improved feed conversion
ratio. Additionally, microbiota analysis revealed significant changes in the composition
of the gizzard, ileum content, ileum mucosa, and caecal and cloacal regions.
Overall, the findings suggest that precision glycans have the potential to enhance
poultry egg production in challenging farming environments.

ukrasnim biljkama su salivacija, povraćanje, otok jezika i grla, dijareja
i slabost.

AB - The goal of this study conducted in Serbia was to detect HEV in pig liver samples from
slaughterhouses, retail outlets, and environmental swabs over the course of a year. All positive
HEV samples were measured and expressed as HEV gene copy numbers per gram of sample, and a
representative number of samples were sequenced using the Sanger approach. A total of 45 HEVpositive samples were re-amplified using nested RT-PCR employing CODEHOP primers targeting
ORF2 (493 nucleotides). The average prevalence of the HEV genotype 3 in all pig liver samples from
the slaughterhouses was 29%, while HEV prevalence was 44% in liver samples from animals younger
than 3 months. HEV RNA was found in thirteen out of sixty (22%) environmental swab samples
that were taken from different surfaces along the slaughter line. Our findings confirmed seasonal
patterns in HEV prevalence, with two picks (summer and winter periods) during the one-year
examination. Among HEV-positive samples, the average viral particles for all positive liver samples
was 4.41 ± 1.69 log10 genome copies per gram. Phylogenetic analysis revealed the majority of HEV
strains (43/45) from Serbia were grouped in the HEV-3a subtype, while two strains were classified
into the HEV-3c subtype, and one strain could not be classified into any of the HEV-3 subtypes.

AB - Bacterial infections and resistance to antibiotics are increasingly severe problems. In recent years, Staphylococcus species
have emerged as important pathogens in animals and humans. Current therapeutic methods against these species have serious disadvantages; therefore new agents with antibacterial potential, such as plant-based substances, are very important in
therapy. We report a pilot study with new method of fractioning the dehydrogenate polymer DHP obtained from coniferyl
alcohol and application of the low-MW fractions of 200–3000 Da for antibacterial activity in healing animal lesions. In
vivo experiments were conducted on the dogs having a skin lesion. Dogs were treated with the suspension containing the
low-MW DHP fractions as the active ingredient, in combination with alginate for 7 days. Cytological smears and microbiological analyses of the afected area were performed. Staphylococcus spp. was isolated from lesions in all dogs from
our research. The results show that the low-MW DHP suspension in alginate promotes skin healing and reduction of the
infection of the lesions in the afected animals. Pharmaceutical composition containing the low-MW DHP fractions exerts
a soothing efect on the subject in wound treatment. Reduction in the number of bacteria by 30% and more were noticed
in 6 dogs, while in 4 dogs this percentage is above 50%. No side efects were noticed. Synthesized lignin oligomers may
have a signifcant place as antimicrobial and skin healing agents, especially since an increasing number of multidrugresistant staphylococci are found on the skin lesions in animals.
