AB - The first few weeks after broilers hatch are the period of most intense bone growthand development, and the time when they are most susceptible to the in fluence ofvarious external and internal factors. Research in the recent decades has focused on theinvolvement of melatonin in bone development during early life in chickens. Melatoninrelease from the pineal gland has a circadian rhythm, with the highest levels circulatingduring the night and decreasing during the light phase of the day. Various types oflighting are used in intensive broiler production. In this study, the effects of melatoninon the tibial structure and growth of broilers were investigated. During the first twoweeks of life, two groups of chickens were kept under continuous light and fed thesame diet, with the experimental group receiving melatonin in the amount of 0.03 g/kg of feed. The results obtained showed that the addition of melatonin in the diet hadpositive effects on the development and growth of the tibia, which was expressed ina signi ficantly greater thickness of the diaphysis and cortical bone of the diaphysis, higher breaking force and higher values of alkaline phosphatase activity. The corticalbone mineral density of the tibia did not differ signi ficantly between the groups ofchicken.

Nju uzrokuju pantljičare Moniezia expansa i Moniezia benedini.

svim drugim sistemima gajenja.

AB - Enteral protozoan infection was of great importance to health status of small ruminants and
its performances. This was parasitic infection caused by protosoas from genus Eimeria,
Cryptosporidium and Giardia. Lamb and kids infection had moderate morbidity and low
mortality rate. Clinical sign of infection is usually presented in animals at 4-10 days old. The
study about parasitic fauna - protozoa helminths, and arthropods of small ruminant at south
part of Serbia, with emphasis to North Kosovo were performed during 2017. The study
included the examination in total of herds flocks of goats and sheep from Zvečan and
Leposavić district (villages Ceranja, Majdevo, Zemanica, Mure, Rudine, Žitkovac, Oraovica,
Mošnica, Donji Krnjin, Belo brdo, Mioliće, Drenova and Beliće. Colected faeces samples were
examined using routine coprological methods. Determination of parasites we performed by
morphological characteristc. Infection with protosoa occurred at and on 46.14% of examined
sheep and 29.42% of examined goat herds. Coccidiosis was found at 43 sheep and 27 goat
herds. We usally occured mixed infection with 2-3 coccidia species. At sheep most abundant
species were E faurei, followed by Eimeria ahsata, E.ovinoidalis, E. intricata and E. pallida. At
goats most abundant species were E.arlongy, folwed by infection with E. hirci, E.nina-kohlyakimovae, E. christenseni and E. caprina. Oocyst were found at adult ant young animals, but
clinical sign of disease were present only at young animals. During our examination
Cryptospoidium spp. was found at 29 sheep and 23 goat herds. Determination of subspecies
we not performed. Lambs between five and twenty-one days were the most susceptible for
infection. Lambs cryptosporidiosis has high morbidity and mortality rate. Symptoms of acute
cryptosporidiosis include inapetence, and weight loss. Infection with Giardia duodenalis was
found at 2 sheep herd. Determination of subspecies we not performed

morphological characteristc.
Determination of subspecies we not performed",

AB - Aim of the study: Calf rearing practices vary in different countries and may be affected by many factors. Poor management is related to diseases outbreak and death in calves. This study aimed to analyze practices in calf rearing and the occurrence of common calf diseases on family farms in two European countries and to examine the characteristics of a farmer and his farm as factors that may affect the way of performing practices related to calves’ health.Area of study: Slovenia and Serbia.Material and methods: For collecting data, the same questionnaire-based survey was distributed among cattle farm owners in Slovenia and Serbia.Main results: The following factors showed a significant influence (p<0.05) on certain rearing practices: farm size (on time for checking calves, milk reheating, and providing rehydration fluids to the calf with diarrhea in Slovenia), specialization of the production (on preventive antiparasitic treatments and restriction of drinking water for calves with diarrhea in Slovenia, and the time for checking calves in Serbia), breeder’s age (on colostrum quality checking in Slovenia), and breeder’s education (on time for checking calves and checking colostrum quality in Serbia). The results pointed out the rearing practices to be improved in both countries, Slovenia and Serbia, such as colostrum management and prevention strategies of calf diseases.Research highlights: Characteristics of the farmer and his farm may affect many aspects of calves’ rearing. Continuous education of farmers and appropriate production planning can contribute to better farm productivity and better health and welfare of calves.

AB - The aim of the research was to evaluate the carcass characteristics and meat quality from chickens fed on diets in which fish meal was substituted with raw earthworms (Lumbricus rubellus) or earthworm meal. In the trial which lasted 42-days, 100 one-day-old Hybro broilers were divided into the control and three experimental groups. The control group was fed on standard broiler feed, the first (E-I) and the second experimental groups (E-II) were fed a diet in which 50% or 100% of fish meal was substituted with earthworm meal, respectively, whilst the third group (E-III) consumed feed without fish meal, but was given raw chopped earthworms ad libitum from day 1 to day 42. The replacement of fish meal with fresh earthworms resulted in significantly lower carcass weights in the E-III group in comparison with the control group (p<0.05). The differences in drumstick, thigh and breast meat share relative to the carcass mass were not significant (p>0.05). The lowest fat content in thigh and breast meat was in the group in which fish meal was replaced with earthworm meal. The lightness (L*) of thigh and breast meat was highest in the broilers fed fresh earthworms ad libitum. No significant differences in pH value were detected between the experimental groups (p>0.05). The most consumer acceptable were drumstick samples from E-II group and the least acceptable samples from the control group. Earthworm meal may be considered an adequate substitute for fish meal in broiler chickens diet since it does not impair the production performance, carcass yield and meat quality.

AB - An intensive cattle breeding encompasses a whole range of procedures that should enable continuous production and optimal utilization of production capacities. In such conditions, newborn calves must adapt to a variety of environmental factors, including housing, care, and feeding conditions. Inappropriate rearing conditions favour the emergence of gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases, as the most common health problems for calves. The same factors, and especially the unbalanced diet, have a major impact on the health of dairy cows and the incidence of diseases such as ketosis, fatty liver syndrome, puerperal paresis, rumen acidosis, and laminitis. This review paper is based on monitoring results of the health of calves and adult cows on dairy farms in Serbia, from 2011 to 2019. Also, some procedures in nutrition that can prevent the occurrence of metabolic diseases of cows are discussed.

AB - In the last couple of decades the case of declining of the European brown hare (Lepus
europaeus) populations was noted in whole Europe including Serbia. Numerous causes for this can be
referred to anthropogenic impacts - landscape changes (agricultural intensification, the use of natural
hare habitats by livestock for the purpose of pastures), use of pesticides, machinery and traffic, as well
as home range size. Other important causes are inadequate reproduction and the level of survival due
to predation (incline in golden jackal population), hunting (especially illegal hunting), variations in climate and diseases, as one of the most important cause of European brown hare population declining. As
in other animals, they are etiologically divided to: viral, bacterial, fungal, parasitic and other diseases.
During hunting season in 2017 (October and November), a study on 46 hares (whole carcasses or eviscerated organs) from the four locations near Belgrade was conveyed. A post-mortem examination and
histopathological investigations were performed and, additionally, routine bacteriology and parasitology of the gastrointestinal system were carried out. The results point to the significance of continuous
health status monitoring and discovering the causes and frequency of certain conditions in free-ranging
European brown hare populations. In this review paper, some health problems in hares are discussed in
more details, taking into account the findings obtained in this preliminary study.

AB - A decline of the European brown hare (Lepus europaeus) population in Serbia is noted
in last couple of decades. This fact led to the necessity of health assessment program
of the population of free-ranging hare. Fourthy six (46) hares (whole carcasses or
eviscerated organs) were collected during the hunting season in 2017 (October and
November) and were submitted for pathomorphological examination. Hunted animals
originated from the four locations near Belgrade. A post-mortem examination and
histopathological investigation was performed on all carcasses/eviscerated organs,
and tissues were collected for toxicological and microbiological examination.
The most striking result was the high incidence of degenerative changes in liver,
kidneys, myocard and arteries (hepatoses, tubulonephroses, myocardiosis and
arteriosclerosis). Also high incidence of parasitic diseases (distomatosis, coccidiosis
and cysticersosis) of the liver were found.
Beside changes on the liver and kidneys high percentage of interstitial pneumonia and
necrotic bronchiolitis was found. Inflammatory lesions were found in the kidneys in
form of interstitial nephritis. Splenomegalia was also noted in few animals but no
pathogenic bacteria were isolated.
Although, diarrhea was noted macroscopically in most examined animals, no
pathogen bacteria were found, but nematode infection in several animals was seen
microscopically.
Finding on the reproductive system was normal in most animals. Ovaries in different
phases of the ovarian cycle, signs of previous gravidities notable on uterus in females,
and in males decreased amount of cells in seminiferous tubules and dilatation of their
lumina, which was normal for the period of sexual inactivity were noted.
All mentioned findings show that decline of the European brown hare (Lepus
europaeus) population has multicausal etiology which will be proven by additional
toxicological, microbiological and molecular examination.

AB - Organic production represents a process of sustainable development of the rural areas in
accordance with the available resources and tradition, also implies comprehensive crop and
livestock production, which ensures the preservation and restoration of natural resources,
strongly supports return to the traditional values and knowledges. The new Strategy for
Agriculture and Rural development in Serbia from 2014-2024 defines goals and priorities for
further development of agriculture. One of priority topics is the promotion of organic
production. Sjenica-Pester plateau belongs to High Nature Value region of Serbia and is well
known for its rich biodiversity with favorable floristical composition of pastures and
meadows. Organic sheep production is a perspective opportunity for rural regional
development. Sjenica sheep is one of the most popular transboundry Zackel type, traditionally
reared in the highly mountain regions of Sebia, mainly in the Sjenica Pester-plateu, where it
was originally developed. The finding of favorable content of CLA and n-6:n-3 ratio,
contribute to the advanced phenotypic characterization of Sjenica Zackel sheep type, the
determination of locally adapted breed value and in making a realistic decision for the
promotion of sustainable use of Sjenica Zackel sheep type.

AB - The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including 17 Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs), represents the new global objectives that succeed the
Millennium Development Goals. The Agenda emphasizes the link between food,
livelihoods and the management of natural resources. The primary objective of this
strategy is the improvement of the environment and, consequently, the improvement of
public health and quality of life. Harmful effects of ecosystem changes on human health
through pollution and loss of natural areas, combined with lifestyle changes, lead to public
health problems like obesity, diabetes, cancer, diseases of the cardiovascular system and
nervous system. Animal health management and food security control play an important
role in The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It's purpose is to support the
improvement of public health and sustainable development of regions. The value of
Sjenica Zackel sheep for rural development has been evaluated considering the new global
objectives and their importance for sustainable development. Sjenica Pester plateau,
characterized by specific floristic composition of pasture, traditionally is related to high
quality products, such are lamb meet and Sjenica cheese. The obtained results have shown
that the genetic constitution of Sjenica type of Zackel sheep, it's evolutionary adaptation to
the habitat, the method of breeding and the specific floristically composition favorably
affect the high-quality animal products.
The Sjenica lamb meat favorable fatty acid profile, important for human health and
especially for infant and children nutrition, raises the interest for sustainable production
and rural development at Sjenica Pester plateau. The obtained results are in accordance
with the new global objectives.

AB - Water for watering of animals should be of the same quality as drinking water
for human consumption. Farm animals' needs for water depend on many factors e.g. air
temperature and humidity, species characteristics, age and production level, physical
activity and meal composition. Breeders sometimes are not aware of needs of their animals
for water, especially in young categories. This paper presents the results of research carried
out in Serbia and Slovenia, with the aim to examine management practices at small-scale
farms of ruminants in rural areas. Data regarding watering practices were collected from
questionnaires answered by owners of cattle farms (60 from Serbia and 293 from Slovenia)
and small ruminant farms (225 in Slovenia). According to the results, continuous access to
drinking water have calves from the first day of life at 27% of the surveyed farms in Serbia
and 13% in Slovenia. At the farms of small ruminants, 57% use automatic drinkers and
water from public water supply and 23% of animals are on the pasture and drink water
from natural sources. In both countries, some owners apply the procedures in watering
which comply with the principles of animal welfare. It is useful to provide more additional
information to breeders about importance of water for health and productivity of their
animals.

AB - An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of hormonal synchronization of ovulation on progesterone concentrations in milk and blood serum and on reproductive performance. Sixty Holstein-Friesian cows averaging 8000 L over 305 days of lactation were divided into 2 groups of 30 animals. One-factor ANOVA and a t-test of progesterone concentrations in venous serum and milk revealed that the lowest concentrations of progesterone in milk (Ovsynch 5.8 + 1.0 ng/mL; control 4.5 + 0.6 ng/mL) and blood serum (Ovsynch 1.3 +/- 0.9 ng/mL; control 1.4 +/- 0.5 ng/mL) in both groups were found on the day of estrus or artificial insemination (AI) (both P < 0.05). Increases in the concentrations of progesterone in milk (Ovsynch 17.6 +/- 4.3 ng/mL; control 10.5 +/- 1.9 ng/mL) and blood serum (Ovsynch 3.6 +/- 1.1 ng/mL; control 4.0 +/- 1.0 ng/mL) were observed on day 7 after AI (both P < 0.05). Concentrations of progesterone in milk and blood serum in nonpregnant cows were reduced on day 21 after AI. Assessment of reproductive performance revealed that the application of treatment shortened the duration of the service period (Ovsynch 76 days; control 83 days) and the calving interval (Ovsynch 376 days; control 382 days).

AB - Claw horn disorders, infectious diseases of hooves and leg injuries cause
lameness in dairy cows (Olechnowicz and Jaskowski, 2011). A lame cow is easily recognized
while walking. In tied system, hock and hoof injuries are common, and some of them is easy
to spot. However, behaviour that indicates pain in the hooves often remains unnoticed which
compromise welfare status of affected animals.
The aim of the study was to determine the incidence and character of the changes in
the hocks and hoofs among tied dairy cows, and also behavior of cows with those changes.

AB - Hilly mountain region of Serbia represents a valuable natural resource with high potential in
livestock production, especially for sustainable goat and sheep rearing. The Balkan Goat, as a
transboundary breed, is on the list of endangered breeds. For decades it has been exposed to
pressure from high performance, exotic, meliorate breeds. Nowadays, it is necessary to
improve the strategy for advanced characterization and conservation of the Balkan Goat
breed. Previous investigations of the genetic structure of this autochthonous, transboundary
breed revealed the existence of genetic variability and good adaptive ability to the local,
unfavorable environment and extensive conditions. Monitoring of some health traits is
necessary for effective planning of advanced breed characterization and conservation. As the
most severe health problem in goat production systems are parasitic infections, determination
of gastro-intestinal parasites is important for definition of health status. The aim of this study
was to assess the prevalence and extensity of gastro-intestinal parasitism of Balkan goat
populations in hilly mountain regions of Serbia, where the breed is traditionally reared. The
study was conducted in 131 Balkan Goat flocks, kept mainly under extensive production
system. The results show that all the tested flocks are infected, while the predominant gastrointestinal
parasites detected were nematodes. Such results are valuable in making strategies
for development of integrated approach to achieve the best control of parasitic infections of
Balkan Goat flocks. Keeping in mind that one of the main challenges of livestock production
are parasitic infections, obtained resultants can also be an important point to determine some
advanced characteristics of Balkan Goat, necessary for conservation process. The importance
of conservation of Balkan Goat, as an endangered, autochthonous genetic resource is less
economical, but mostly cultural, historical and heritage oriented. There is also the aesthetic
argument that Balkan goat is an element of nature and landscape protection.

AB - Lameness is a multi-factorial condition that depends on managerial as well as genetic variables, but often is related to legs and feet condition of the animals. The aim of the study was to give an overview of legs and claws condition and the presence of lameness in sows at one industrial farm. Total 130 animals (90 dry i.e. pregnant and 40 lactating sows) were observed. The occurrence of leg joints swellings, than claws condition (toes length, dew claw condition, cracked wall) and lameness (in animals in group boxes) were visually recorded and then classified according to the appropriate protocols. Findings proved the occurrence of one or more of examined conditions in 40% of pregnant sows and in 45% sows in lactation. In more than 20% of pregnant sows lameness was presented. There was statistically significant positive correlation between the occurrence of lameness and leg swellings and between lameness and claw condition in pregnant sows (in both cases p<0.0001). The results show that lameness is a significant problem in the studied farm. In general, more attention should be given to monitoring of sows' physical condition and behaviour, to minimize the occurrence of welfare problems and to reduce production losses.

AB - Dermatomycosis is well known skin disease of cattle. Clinically manifested dermatomycosis diagnosed in period from october to november in high pregnant heifers Holstein Friesian race in tied housing, and in dairy cows on the farm with extensive breeding.. Characterized by lesions on the skin of the head in patients with head, in the form of round hairless mass covered with white flakes from 0.5 to 1.0 cm thick. Papillomatosis is a viral disease caused by DNA virus of the family Papovaviridae. Cause disease in all ruminants, and is considered to have the character of zoonosis. Papillomatosis was found on the farm of high-producing dairy cows, and changes such as fibropapiloma the head and neck. The incidence and nature of these diseases highlight the importance of ensuring the conditions of growing cattle.
The incidence and nature of these diseases highlight the importance of ensuring the conditions of growing cattle., Trihoficija je dobro poznato oboljenje kože goveda, koja je prisutna na našim farmama visoko-mlečnih krava.

AB - Due intensification of farming aseptic podоdermatitis is increasingly appears, especially in beef cattle and cows in early lactation. Some high-producing dairy cows farms have a great presence of this disease which mainly occurs after sudden changes in food and has an acute, sub acute and chronic form. Both front, both hind or hooves of all four legs could become ill. Significance in the etiology of this disease occurrence have some toxic compounds, as result of digestion of cocentrated, easily digestible food after long period of giving.
Therapy is effective in case is done on time, which means at the earliest stage of the disease. In addition to combat acidosis, antihistamine preparations should be parenterally administered to animals. In all cases when endotoxemia is suspected the resorption of toxins from digestive tract should be prevented. It is also important to support the effective circulation of acropodium by administration of vasodilatators, anticoagulants, vitamin K, calcium preparations, corticosteroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
In this paper we gave the most important aspects of aseptic pododermatitis in cows, as well as situation at two of Serbian farms.

AB - The planned use of biosecurity measures, a high level of welfare and good manufacturing practices are critical for the health of cattle and pigs in intensive production. The required level of biosecurity on cattle and pig farms is the result of logical decisions and timely action taken in a specific epidemiological situation, recognizing the threats from the environment and the weak points in the production process. In this sense, the introduction of the principles of HACCP and sanitation protocols enable preventive of introduction and spread of infectious agents in the herd, while the farm biosecurity plan is the key factor in disease prevention, prevention of unwanted situations and performance improvement. According to results of cytogenetic blood testing of cattle and pigs on farms in Serbia, showed in this paper, a substantial percentage of cows have a change in the structure and number of chromosomes. Cytogenetic tests allow the detection of carriers of hereditary anomalies and may be indicators of environmental pollution, especially animal feed. For these reasons, our recommendation is that industrial-type farm, and the Centers for reproduction and artificial insemination, approaches using the results of cytogenetic testing and their involvement in biosecurity plans.

AB - For several decades fish welfare has been subject of many researches, and the interest for this subject is connected with the fact that fish can feel pain and suffering. In addition to this stressors' mechanisms of action and their consequences are similar in mammals and fish. Assessment of welfare for farmed fish is based on the same principles as for terrestrial farm animals. However, special methods of collecting data are needed due to morphological characteristics of fish and properties of their environment. In the world and in our country, researches of different ways of fish welfare assessment are being conducted, especially based on non-invasive techniques such as monitoring of behaviour. In this paper a review of basic principles and methods used in assessment of farmed fish welfare is given.

In the world and in our country, researches of different ways of fish welfare assessment are being conducted, especially based on non-invasive techniques such as monitoring of behaviour. In this paper a review of basic principles and methods used in assessment of farmed fish welfare is given., Dobrobit riba je već nekoliko decenija predmet brojnih istraživanja, a zainteresovanost za ovu temu povezana je sa činjenicom da ribe mogu da osećaju bol i patnju.
