AB - Upotreba rendgenskih i ultrazvučnih aparata je sve više zastupljena
u dijagnostici patoloških stanja respiratornog i kardiovaskularnog
i uz rezultate kliničkog i laboratorijskog pregleda, pružaju
dovoljno podataka za postavljanje validne dijagnoze. Zbog svoje neinvazivnosti
i relativno brzog i jednostavnog izvođenja, moguće ih je
višekratno ponavljati, što omogućava praćenje napredovanja bolesti i
procenjivanje efekata primenjene terapije.
rendgenskog snimanja toraksa i ehokardiografskog pregleda. Detaljno
će biti opisana anatomija respiratornih organa i srca u rendgenskoj,
odnosno ultrazvučnoj slici. Pored toga, biće prikazana i brojna patološka
praksi.

AB - Patološka su stanja zuba kunića u svakodnevnoj kliničkoj praksi vrlo česta i često rezultiraju poremećajem u funkciji organa probavnog i respiratornog sustava, a mogu imati i letalan ishod.

AB - The first few weeks after broilers hatch are the period of most intense bone growthand development, and the time when they are most susceptible to the in fluence ofvarious external and internal factors. Research in the recent decades has focused on theinvolvement of melatonin in bone development during early life in chickens. Melatoninrelease from the pineal gland has a circadian rhythm, with the highest levels circulatingduring the night and decreasing during the light phase of the day. Various types oflighting are used in intensive broiler production. In this study, the effects of melatoninon the tibial structure and growth of broilers were investigated. During the first twoweeks of life, two groups of chickens were kept under continuous light and fed thesame diet, with the experimental group receiving melatonin in the amount of 0.03 g/kg of feed. The results obtained showed that the addition of melatonin in the diet hadpositive effects on the development and growth of the tibia, which was expressed ina signi ficantly greater thickness of the diaphysis and cortical bone of the diaphysis, higher breaking force and higher values of alkaline phosphatase activity. The corticalbone mineral density of the tibia did not differ signi ficantly between the groups ofchicken.

AB - Cranial cruciate ligament disease is a common pathological condition in dogs that is often presented in daily clinical practice. Different risk factors for the development of this condition include breed, sex, age, bodyweight and neuter status, as well as different biological and biomechanical mechanisms. In the literature, special attention has been paid to the role of the tibial plateau angle in damage to the cranial cruciate ligament. Although the disease was first described at the beginning of last century, and since then different surgical methods have been developed to treat it, its aetiology remains unclear. In this review, contemporary literature data related to the role of tibial plateau angle in canine cranial cruciate ligament rupture are presented.

AB - This paper aims to assess the etiology and differential diagnosis of severe pathological lesions in wild and domestic cattle from the Late Neolithic site of At-Vršac in the northeast part of the present-day Serbia. Excavations of this multilayered site revealed the remains of a Late Neolithic settlement belonging to the Vinča culture network of the Central Balkans. An aurochs metacarpal bone, two domestic cattle fragments of fused ulna and radius and of tibia, all with massive bone proliferations were recovered during the archaeological excavations in 1976. Paleopathological study was undertaken using an interdisciplinary approach, including AMS dating, radiography, computed tomography (CT), and histopathology. The results show severe oblique healed fracture with secondary pronounced bone reaction in the aurochs metacarpal bone and in the domestic cattle ulna–radius, while traumatic alteration infected with disseminated osteomyelitis was found in the domestic cattle tibia. These pathologies of wild and domestic cattle are discussed to reveal the level of environmental and human influence on the origin and development of the lesions in the Late Neolithic cattle.

AB - The period of bone healing after trauma goes through certain physiological processes. In situations where a bone fracture occurs, our intention is to surgically position in an appropriate morpho-anatomical position. For osteosynthesis we used vipla wire and micro plates with corresponding screws. The aim of our research was to evaluate the optimal time for the removal of the osteosynthetic material, fracture site biomechanical stability, and measurement of the callus thickness. For this research ten 4 months old rabbits with right leg femur fracture were used. Osteosynthesis was done with titanium micro plates, corresponding screws and vipla wire. Experimental animals were observed through the post-operative period at the first and seventh postoperative day and there on at 2, 4, 6, 9, 12 weeks. Further additional fixation was needed in one of the rabbits in the second week. The postoperative period provided us information about the optimal moment for the removal of titanium micro plates. It showed that over a period of six weeks, the bone had almost all normal biomechanical properties. Significantly greater strength and rigidity of the recovered femur were obtained after 12 weeks. Micro plates that were removed after 4, 6 or 9 weeks, did not need furhter fixation and therefore fixation was not applied, compared to those placed during the 12 weeks. X Ray evaluation provided us with follow up results of fracture healing. The results suggest that it is acceptable to remove titanium micro plates after a period of healing, that is, after the formation of the callus and bridging of the fracture gap and diastasis with newly formed bone. © 2022 Risto Dučić et al., published by Sciendo.

AB - This paper aims to present the first evidence of animal diseases from the Central Balkan Eneolithic, a prehistoric period that lasted about 2000 years. The eponymous site of Bubanj in south-eastern Serbia provided a diachronic perspective on animal pathologies developing during this long time period. We analyzed 71 animal remains showing evidence of pathological changes. All of the remains exhibiting anomalies were subjected to macroscopic analysis, while the specimens with the most prominent alterations also underwent X-ray and CT imaging. Anomalies were observed mostly in domestic animals. Only in caprines were all of the different types of anomalies present, with dental pathologies being the most frequent. Degenerative bone alterations were noted in around 78% of the domestic cattle specimens, while congenital anomalies were the most common type in domestic pigs. Pathological changes were also noted in dogs, aurochs, red deer, wild boars, beavers, and bears. In most cases, the anomalies were caused by hereditary and environmental factors. Caprine dental pathologies were the result of aging and poor-quality nutrition. In domestic cattle, besides being caused by environmental factors, the degenerative alterations might also have been work related. The lack of paleopathological data from other Eneolithic sites in the region, and the scarce or non-existent evidence from the previous (Neolithic) and succeeding (Bronze Age) periods prevented comparative analyses and discussion of the results within wider temporal and spatial frames. Establishing a paleopathological investigation of animal remains with anomalies from the prehistoric Central Balkans should be a standard, in order to provide us with a better understanding of human–animal interactions.

AB - Background: There are many studies on the morphology of the liver and its blood vessels in experimental animals, but such studies are lacking in the mole rat (Spalax leucodon). The aim of this paper was a detailed basic study on the topography, morphology, vascular and biliary branching systems of the liver in the mole rat. Materials and methods: Coloured gelatine and mixture of coloured lead oxide and linseed oil were injection contrast masses used to obtain vascular and biliary branching pattern in the liver. It was revealed that the liver of the mole rat had five lobes (left, quadrate, right medial, right lateral and caudate lobes). Results: The left, undivided lobe was the largest lobe of the liver. The quadrate lobe was divided into two components by a deep notch. The gallbladder, of cylindrical shape, was present and attached to the quadrate lobe. The common bile duct was formed by the union of the left and right hepatic ducts. The pancreatic duct joined the common bile duct before it entered the duodenum. In the present study, only the right medial lobe and quadrate lobe always showed a single lobar artery, portal and hepatic veins. The left lobe showed four lobar arteries, portal and hepatic veins. The caudate lobe with its two processes and the right lateral and medial lobes had different arterial and portal blood supply as well as hepatic and biliary drainage of these lobes. The intrahepatic branches of the proper hepatic artery ran parallel to the branches of the common portal vein in the same lobes of the liver. Conclusions: The results of this study are significant for comparative studies among different species of rodents and other experimental animals. Morphology, vasculature and biliary tract of the liver in the mole rat were similar to that of other experimental animals and identified differences may be related to the adaptation to the mode of life and diet of this rodent.

• smanjiti ograničenje pokreta kičmenog stuba i usporiti razvoj anki-
loze i
• sprečiti komplikacije bolesti (kifozu, kifoskoliozu, fleksione kontrak-
ture).

AB - The objective of this work was to assess absorbed doses in organs and tissues of a rabbit, following computed tomography (CT) examinations, using a dedicated 3D voxel model. Absorbed doses in relevant organs were calculated using the MCNP5 Monte Carlo software. Calculations were perfomed for two standard CT protocols, using tube voltages of 110 kVp and 130 kVp. Absorbed doses were calculated in 11 organs and tissues, i.e., skin, bones, brain, muscles, heart, lungs, liver, spleen, kidney, testicles, and fat tissue. The doses ranged from 15.3 to 28.3 mGy, and from 40.2 to 74.3 mGy, in the two investigated protocols. The organs that received the highest dose were bones and kidneys. In contrast, brain and spleen were organs that received the smallest doses. Doses in organs which are stretched along the body did not change significantly with distance. On the other hand, doses in organs which are localized in the body showed maximums and minimums. Using the voxel model, it is possible to calculate the dose distribution in the rabbit’s body after CT scans, and study the potential biological effects of CT doses in certain organs. The voxel model presented in this work can be used to calculated doses in all radiation experiments in which rabbits are used as experimental animals.

AB - Background/Aim. The reaction of an organism to radiation depends on the level of irradiation and the sensitivity of the affected tissue cells. The biological effects on the cells and tissues are proportional to the absorbed radiation energy. The aim of our study was to examine the effects of hypofunction of the pituitary gland, previously irradiated with x-rays, on the growth of rat’s craniofacial and stomatognathic system as well as rat’s tibia. Methods. A total dose of x-rays of 27.92 Gy was applied in eight sessions in the period from 8 to 63 days of animal age on their heads and the effects of irradiation-induced hypofunction of the pituitary gland on the growth of rat’s craniofacial and stomatognathic system and tibia were examined. In order to differentiate the effects of the irradiated pituitary gland from the direct effects of x-rays on the head, the experiment was set as a double study. One group of animals had the pituitary gland protected with a lead plate set beneath the projection of the gland, while the second group was irradiated with the same dose, but without the protection. The control group of animals were non-irradiated. Results. Growth measurements of numerous parameters of the craniofacial and stomatognathic system as well as tibia in rats with the entire locally irradiated head showed a statistically significant delay, compared to both the non-irradiated control group and the group with the protected pituitary gland. Conclusion. The damage of the stomatognathic and craniofacial system was greater in animals with irradiated head without pituitary gland protection compared to those with the gland protection whereby the growth of the craniofacial system was most affected. Irraduition-induced pituitary gland hypofunction and irradiation itself showed a stronger effect on the lower jaw growth rate impairment compared to the upper jaw. Similarly, the delay in tibia growth was more pronounced in animals without pituitary gland protection during irradiation of their heads compared to non-protected ones.
AB - Uvod/Cilj. Reakcija organizma na zračenje zavisi od doze
zračenja i osetljivosti ćelija tretiranog tkiva.
kraniofacijalnog i stomatognatnog sistema pacova.
Oštećenja stomatognatog i kraniofacijalnog
Veći zaostatak u rastu usled kombinovanoig dejstva hipofunkcije

AB - A 15-year-old indoor/outdoor female, neutered, domestic European short haired cat was presented to our clinic with a history of neck-elongation and wheezing during inspiration/expiration. The first signs of respiratory disease occurred two weeks before the clinical presentation. After taking of clinical history, clinical examination and basic laboratory tests (complete blood count, blood smear, snap Feline Immunodeficiency Virus/Feline Leukemia Virus Combo test), a lung x-ray was performed showing the presence of left lung atelectasis and pneumothorax. The primary causes of lung atelectasis were not determined. Given that the general condition of the cat was very bad, she was put in an oxygen cage, thoracocentesis was performed, but the animal’s condition did not improve, and 24 hours after clinical presentation, the cat died. Autopsy revealed the presence of a tumor mass on the caudal lobe of the right lung, tumor formation in the area of trachea bifurcation and changes in the liver in the form of four round structures of different sizes. Histopathologically, the existence of primary undifferentiated lung adenocarcinoma with metastases on the liver and trachea was determined.
bolesti, kliničkog i laboratorijskog ispitivanja (krvna slika, krvni razmaz, FIV/FeLV
levog plućnog krila i pneumotoraks.

levog plućnog krila i pneumotoraks.

AB - Craniomandibular osteopathy is a rare disorder in dogs, characterised by subperiosteal and extraperiosteal new bone proliferations on the skull, on the mandibles in particular and occasionally on long bones. Data about craniomandibular osteopathy in the golden jackal (Canis aureus) are lacking. This paper describes craniomandibular osteopathy in a seven-month-old animal. The mandibular region and the distal section of the hindlimb were examined radiologically and by CT. Both imaging modalities showed ossifying periosteal deposits localised on the left side of the mandible and irregular periosteal ossifying deposits covering the surface of the crural bones. Histopathology revealed new bone formation in the endosteum, periosteum and trabecular bone of the mandible and in the distal section of the hindlimb, but no inflammatory cells were found. Craniomandibular osteopathy in free-living canids has not yet been reported. However, the macroscopic imaging and histopathological features in this pup were consistent with the disease.

AB - Objective Subchondral bone density distribution can be used to study joint biomechanics non-invasively. Differences in joint loading between related species can aid in the understanding of joint loading and the development of certain types of orthopaedic pathology. This study was conducted to evaluate density distribution in the subchondral bone of the talus of different Canidae species, as a parameter reflecting the long-term joint loading in the tarsocrural joint. Materials and Methods The tarsal joints of cadaveric dogs of different breeds were included, that is, German Shepherd (n = 5), Bouvier des Flandres (n = 3) and Labrador Retriever (n = 6). Additionally, golden jackals (n = 5) (Canis aureus) and wolves (n = 5) (Canis lupus) were included. Consecutive computed tomography slices were made and the subchondral bone density distribution was evaluated using computer tomographic osteoabsorptiometry. Different breeds and species were visually compared. Results Differences were found in the subchondral bone density distribution of the talus between breeds and between species (Canis familiaris, Canis lupus and Canis aureus). Discussion and Conclusion Based on the density distribution, there are differences in loading conditions of the tarsocrural joint in different species of Canidae. The joint loading distribution is very similar between dogs of the same breed and within the same species. Although between-breed differences can be explained by conformational differences, the between-species differences remain subject to further research.

AB - Objective: To evaluate the etiology of skeletal changes noted in equid vertebrae from a 19th- century context near Belgrade, Serbia. Materials: A vertebral column consisting of 15 fused thoracic vertebrae (T2-T16), with right ribs fused to T4 and T5 and small remnants of ribs articulating with T4, T5 and T6 on the left side were accidentally recovered during industrial exploitation of sand. Methods: The specimen was subjected to morphological analysis and collagen fingerprinting by mass spectrometry for species identification. In order to determine the absolute temporal context, radiocarbon dating was employed. Pathological changes were analyzed macroscopically and then underwent X-ray and (CT) imaging. Results: Species identification indicates that the vertebral column belonged to a domestic horse (Equus caballus) living in the early 19th century. Pathological changes included exuberant bone proliferation, fusion of small articulations, enthesopathy formation, complete fusion between the vertebral bodies, and ossification of the anterior longitudinal ligament. Conclusions: Pathological changes represent signs of an advanced stage of vertebral fusion consistent with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH). Significance: This case study provides a clear distinction between diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) and other vertebral column diseases in equids. It also presents a new and significant contribution to the nascent discipline of animal paleopathology in present-day Serbia. Limitations: Given that only 15 thoracic vertebrae were discovered, the impact of this disease on other parts of the horse skeleton remains unknown, as does the archaeological context of the remains. Suggestions for further research: Research into the frequency of DISH in equids, as well as the historical context of equine husbandry in Serbia will allow greater insight into the causes and effects of this pathological condition.

AB - In recent years, computed tomography (CT) has become very common in veterinary medicine. It is well known that testicles are organs with high radiosensitivity and their function can be impaired even after exposure to low radiation doses. In this work, we calculated the absorbed radiation doses after CT was performed with different voltage/current levels and correlated it with the activity of antioxidant enzymes in rabbit testicles. Two hours after CT, the activities of catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) were increased in the testicles of animals that received an absorbed dose of 29.2 mGy. The same changes, along with elevated glutathione reductase (GR) activity, were observed after 7 days in animals that received the highest absorbed dose (46.3 mGy). It would appear that absorbed doses above 27.8 mGy provoked the antioxidant reaction but the time scale of the reaction was dose-dependent. Examination of the obtained results revealed that the main denominator of CT influence was a higher current. Our results suggest that CT influences the antioxidant status in rabbit testicles. The changes in antioxidant enzyme activities were dose- and time-dependent and influenced by the applied current.

AB - The objective of this study was to assess the radiation dose in computed tomography examinations of rabbits using different examination protocols and to correlate these values with the activity of antioxidant enzymes in their red blood cells following irradiation. The presented results revealed that a single, routine computed tomography scan exposure led to a different response of the activity of antioxidant enzymes in red blood cells regarding both dose and time. The results indicate that there is a dose threshold that is about 25 mGy. Doses below that level do not produce any significant changes in the level of antioxidant enzymes activity. On the other hand, the level just above that threshold had a significant impact on the antioxidant defence, but in a relatively short time period (2 hours after exposure), compared to the higher dose that requires a longer adaptive period.

AB - By causing numerous changes in the cardiovascular system, ageing leads to a decreased threshold for clinical manifestation of heart disease. The aim of this study was to define the existence of cardiac structural and functional changes in healthy dogs of different age. Radiographic, electrocardiographic (ECG) and echocardiographic examinations of 20 clinically healthy German Shepherd dogs were performed in order to define the values of relevant parameters. Afterwards, the values of cardio examinations were compared between young and old dogs and statistically analyzed. The ECG recordings did not show the appearance of clinically significant arrhythmias, nor was their appearance significantly different between dogs of different age. Statistically significant differences in QRS duration (P lt 0.05) and R wave amplitude (P lt 0.05) existed between groups, but all values were within the range of ECG reference values for healthy dogs. Concerning structural changes, the left ventricle wall thickness at end-diastole (LVWd) and end-systole (LVWs), and the relative wall thickness (RWT) between young and old dogs differed significantly (P lt 0.001, P lt 0.05, P lt 0.05, respectively). These differences in heart structure were not accompanied by systolic dysfunction, estimated by a left ventricle shortening fraction. The diastolic wall stress index (WSID) was significantly decreased in old dogs (P lt 0.05). Young and old dogs showed similar electrical and systolic function. Old dogs had different cardiac structure compared to the young dogs, which could result in diastolic function change.

AB - Pathological modifications are rarely observed in the remains of wild animals from archaeological sites. We present one such specific, pathological change a case of spavin in a red deer specimen from the Early Neolithic site of Blagotin, in central Serbia. The left tarsal joint presented proliferative new bone formation, which was analyzed macroscopically, then subjected to X-ray and computed tomography (CT) imaging. We assume that the initial degenerative changes in this red deer tarsal joint were probably caused by ageing, although the environment may have likely contributed to the progression of the disorder. Spavin usually results in stiffness of the joints and in lameness, perhaps contributing in the animals capture by Neolithic hunters. This case is important in that it demonstrates that spavin is not necessarily a consequence of riding or traction work.

AB - To evaluate the state of the environment in Kopaonik, a mountain in Serbia, the activity concentrations of (4) K, Ra-226, Th-232 and Cs-137 in five different types of environmental samples are determined by gamma ray spectrometry, and radiological hazard due to terrestrial radionuclides is calculated. The mean activity concentrations of natural radionuclides in the soil are higher than the global average. However, with an exception of two sampling locations, the external radiation hazard index is below one, implying an insignificant radiation hazard. Apart from K-40, content of the natural radionuclides is predominantly below minimum detectable activities in grass and cow milk, but not in mosses. Although Cs-137 is present in the soil, grass, mosses and herbal plants, its specific activity in cow milk is below minimum detectable activity. Amongst the investigated herbal plants, Vaccinium myrtillus L. shows accumulating properties, as a high content of Cs-137 is detected therein. Therefore, moderation is advised in consuming Vaccinium myrtillus L. tea.

AB - The use of phosphate mineral products in animal nutrition, as a major source of phosphor and calcium, can lead to uranium entering the food chain. The aim of the present study was to determine the protective effect of natural sepiolite and sepiolite treated with acid for broilers after oral intake of uranium. The broilers were contaminated for 7 days with 25 mg/uranyl nitrate per day. Two different adsorbents (natural sepiolite and sepiolite treated with acid) were given via gastric tube immediately after the oral administration of uranium. Natural sepiolite reduced uranium distribution by 57 % in kidney, 80 % in liver, 42 % in brain, and 56 % in muscle. A lower protective effect was observed after the administration of sepiolite treated with acid, resulting in significant damage of intestinal villi in the form of shortening, fragmentation, and necrosis, and histopathological lesions on kidney in the form of edema and abruption of epithelial cells in tubules. When broilers received only sepiolite treated with acid (no uranyl nitrate), shortening of intestinal villi occurred. Kidney injuries were evident when uranium concentrations in kidney were 0.88 and 1.25 A mu g/g dry weight. It is concluded that adding of natural sepiolite to the diets of broilers can reduce uranium distribution in organs by significant amount without adverse side effects.

AB - Dental diseases in dogs and cats are of increasing importance in veterinary practice. If not diagnosed and treated on time, they can significantly affect the quality of life and pet health as well. Roentgenography of orofacial system, as a part of veterinary dentistry, is an important diagnostic tool that provides insight into diseases and irregularities of the teeth, shows macrostructure of bone parts, and also may indicate the etiology and genesis of various pathological conditions of the teeth. The objective of this paper is to point out to most common pathologies which small animal veterinary dentistry daily meets, as well as to foster the systematic development in this area in order to find more quality to both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

AB - During archaeological excavations in September 2009, on the late antiquity necropolis near Obrenovac (Serbia) a horsemans grave, with horse included, was discovered and assigned to the Avar period (the 8th century AD). Horse bones were subjected to pathomorphological and radiological investigations. In order to obtain information concerning equine pathology during Avar domination, 29 bones with changes observed, i.e. in the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, metacarpal and metatarsal bones and proximal and distal phalanges limbs have been evaluated. Pathomorphology revealed chronic deformative spondyloarthropathy of the spine and ossification of the interosseous ligament both in the metacarpus and in metatarsus, while chronic periostitis was observed in the proximal phalanges, as well as ungular cartilage ossification in all distal phalanges. Based on the pathological findings on the horses bones, it was concluded that the animal was intensively used for riding and/or as a draught animal during its lifetime, even prior to the completion of its full growth. The pathology revealed on the limb bones indicated long-lasting exposure to the trauma, suggesting that the horse had been probably ridden for long distances on hard, rocky and uneven terrain. It was also concluded that there had been a strong possibility that the mentioned Avar horse had shown symptoms of locomotor disorders due to back pain.

It was also concluded that there had been a strong possibility that the mentioned Avar horse had shown symptoms of locomotor disorders due to back pain.",
