Case of intestinal obstruction by gravel in red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) solved with medicamentous therapy

AB  - Red-eared sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans) are often kept as pets, even though their sale is
prohibited in many countries due the invasiveness of this species. This report describes a
case of a 4-year-old red-eared slider that presented with a month-long history of lethargy
and unwillingness to go into the water and was unsuccessfully treated with antibiotics
and corticosteroids. Upon clinical and radiological examination, it was discovered that
the patient was suffering from intestinal obstruction caused presumably by gravel stones.
Medicamentous therapy consisting of meloxicam, lactulose and Ringer’s solution for
reptiles was then started and the turtle managed to pass all the ingested stones via
the alimentary tract. Control radiological examination has shown no signs of highdensity
structures in the lumen of the intestines, and the turtle has made a full recovery.
With enterotomy often being considered indicated in chelonians suffering from
intestinal obstruction caused by gravel, this is, to the best of the authors’ knowledge,
the first reported case of this kind resolved solely with medicamentous therapy in a
red-eared slider.

AB  - Zarazne bolesti su jedan od vodećih uzroka ekonomskih gubitaka
u živinarskoj proizvodnji. Živina je podložna različitim zaraznim bolestima
s obzirom na specifičan način uzgoja. Slobodno držanje živine,
kao vid uzgoja, karakteriše se slabim biosigurnosnim merama. Jedinke
u takvom načinu držanja mogu doći u kontakt i sa drugim vrstama
ptica, uključujući i migratorne vrste. Kod farmskog načina uzgoja
živine, biosigurnosne mere su na višem nivou, ali je visok proizvodni
pritisak uticao da jedinke postanu podložnije mnogim bolestima. Najznačajnije
zarazne bolesti živine koje su obavezne za prijavljivanje
nadležnim organima su atipična kuga živine, gamboro bolest, avijarna
influenca, infektivni laringotraheitis, tuberkuloza, Marekova bolest i
salmoneloza. U cilju sprečavanja pojave i kontrole bolesti kod živine,
kao i kod drugih životinjskih vrsta postupa se prema Zakonu o veterinarstvu
(“Službeni glasnik RS”, broj 91/05) i odgovarajućim podzakonskim
aktima. Radi otkrivanja uzroka uginuća, pored ostalih dijagnostičkih
procedura, vrši se i obdukcija leševa živine prema standardnim
protokolima za obdukciju ptica. Ukoliko je potrebno uraditi patohistološku
analizu, uzorci ne smeju biti deblji od 0,5 cm kako bi 10% puferizovani
formalin prodro kroz tkivo u procesu fiksacije tokom najmanje
48 časova. Nakon obdukcije, leševe živine treba neškodljivo ukloniti.

AB  - The eight-year study (2015–2023) was performed on a large sample of poached European
pond turtles infected with Haemogregarina stepanowi and held in a pond that belongs to a quarantine
section of Belgrade Zoo. The protected species of European pond turtles have been found in poor
health, with general weakness, anorexia, and low motility. Comprehensive cytological, hematological,
molecular, and postmortem evaluations have been performed. Initially, Diff Quick staining of the
blood smears revealed rounded or elongated erythrocytes, often bearing premeront or U-shaped
gamont of the hemogregarines inside. The reduced erythrocyte numbers, hemoglobin, and hematocrit
values found in the examined population of infected turtles indicated anemia. Macroscopically, shell
necrosis and massive skin hemorrhages were the most prominent findings observed in diseased
turtles. Microscopically, the lungs, liver, kidneys, and spleen revealed hyperemia, hemorrhages,
and the presence of parasitic stages in tissue samples in 31 of 40 necropsied turtles. Cytological
and microscopic examination of the samples proved to be sufficient for establishing the infection,
but molecular analyses of the 18S sequence were used for phylogenetic studies. Over the years, the
number of diseased and dead turtles has decreased, which could be hypothetically attributed to the
elimination of leeches as the definitive host.

AB  - A 3-year-old intact male African pygmy hedgehog was presented at the Teaching Hospital
of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Belgrade, with a growth on the left side of its
abdomen. After clinical examination, the mass was surgically removed, and histopathological findings
indicated a nerve sheath tumor. The hedgehog fully recovered after surgery and was euthanized eight
months later due to the appearance of multicentric changes in the internal organs. Further necropsy
and macroscopic, cytologic, histopathologic, and immunohistochemical findings revealed that the
tumor was a multicentric high-grade T-cell lymphoma. This is an unusual case of an African pygmy
hedgehog with two different neoplasms−a nerve sheath tumor followed by lymphoma.

Fibrinonekrotični endometritis i septikemija kod uzgajanih činčila usled infekcije sa Salmonella typhimurium

AB  - Чинчиле (Chinchilla lanigera) су мали сисари који припадају реду Rodentia и породици Chinchilidae. У природи живе на простору Анда у Јужној Америци. Данас се гаје у зоо вртовима, као кућни љубимци и узгајају на фармама због крзна. Салмонелоза је зоонотска болест која се јавља у целом свету. Изазивају је бактерије из рода Salmonella, које се сматрају стриктно патогеним код сисара и птица. Инфекција салмонелама код чинчила најчешће се јавља у септикемичној форми. У овом раду описане су патоморфолошке промене код чинчила угинулих од салмонелозе.
На Катедру за патологију достављени су лешеви две угинуле чинчиле код којих је пре угинућа клинички запажен крвави исцедак из стиднице. Спољашњим прегледом угинулих животиња уочено је да су биле у доброј кондицији, длака перианалне регије била је упрљана смеђе-црвеним садржајем, а из стиднице се изливао тамноцрвени садржај. Унутрашњим прегледом запажена је увећана, проширена материца напетог зида, плаво-црвене боје, наглашених крвних судова, испуњена трошним, безструктурним, сиво-ружичастим садржајем. Јетра је била благо тупих рубова, светлосмеђе боје. Плућа су била мозаичног изгледа, са ситним, тачкастим, тамноцрвеним подручјима. Узорци ткива са обдукције фиксирани су у пуферизованом формалину и након обраде у аутоматском ткивном процесору обојени хематоксилином и еозином.
Хистопатолошким прегледом је запажено псеудомембранозно запаљење материце са великом количином фибринонекротичног садржаја у којем су уочене колоније бактерија, док је мишићни слој био прожет интензивним крвављењима. Уочена су крвављења и у мозгу, плућима, срцу, бубрезима, јетри и цревима. Местимично се у крвним судовима мањег промера уочавао фибрински тромб. У плућима је запажен периваскуларни едем, док су у јетри уочена расута некротична подручја и мултифокални хепатитис, а код једне животиње су били присутни и знаци регенерације хепатоцита (увећане ћелије са базофилијом цитоплазме, двоједарне ћелије, крупна једра). Микробиолошким испитивањем узорака органа утврђено је присуство бактерије Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica серотип Typhimurium (Salmonella Typhimurium).
AB  - Chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera) are small mammals of the order Rodentia and the family Chinchilidae with natural habitats in the Andes in South America. They are kept in zoos, as pets and farmed for fur. Salmonellosis is a zoonotic disease known worldwide. It is caused by bacteria from the genus Salmonella, which are considered strictly pathogenic in mammals and birds. In chinchillas, infection with Salmonella sp. is usually in the form of septicemia. This paper describes pathomorphological changes in chinchillas died from salmonellosis.
Carcasses of two chinchillas with bloody vulvar discharge noticed clinically were delivered to the Department of pathology. External examination revealed that animals were in good body condition, with the tan-red stained perianal area and dark red secret from the vulva. An internal examination showed an enlarged, bluish-red uterus with accentuated vasculature filled with friable, amorphous greyish-pink content. The liver was slightly enlarged and pale tan. Lungs had a mosaic appearance with punctuated dark red areas. Necropsy tissue samples were fixed in buffered formalin, processed in an automatic tissue processor and stained with hematoxylin and eosin.
Microscopic examination showed pseudomembranous inflammation of the uterus with a large amount of fibrinonecrotic content in which many bacterial colonies were present. At the same time in muscle layers, there was intense hemorrhage. Hemorrhages were also seen in the brain, lungs, heart, kidney, liver and intestine. Occasionally in small blood vessels, there was fibrin thrombus. In the lungs, perivascular edema was noticed. The liver had disseminated necrotic areas and multifocal hepatitis, and in one animal, there were signs of hepatocyte regeneration (enlarged cells with cytoplasmic basophilia, binucleated cells, and large nuclei). abstract = "Чинчиле (Chinchilla lanigera) су мали сисари који припадају реду Rodentia и породици Chinchilidae. У природи живе на простору Анда у Јужној Америци. Данас се гаје у зоо вртовима, као кућни љубимци и узгајају на фармама због крзна. Салмонелоза је зоонотска болест која се јавља у целом свету. Изазивају је бактерије из рода Salmonella, које се сматрају стриктно патогеним код сисара и птица. Инфекција салмонелама код чинчила најчешће се јавља у септикемичној форми. У овом раду описане су патоморфолошке промене код чинчила угинулих од салмонелозе.
На Катедру за патологију достављени су лешеви две угинуле чинчиле код којих је пре угинућа клинички запажен крвави исцедак из стиднице. Спољашњим прегледом угинулих животиња уочено је да су биле у доброј кондицији, длака перианалне регије била је упрљана смеђе-црвеним садржајем, а из стиднице се изливао тамноцрвени садржај. Унутрашњим прегледом запажена је увећана, проширена материца напетог зида, плаво-црвене боје, наглашених крвних судова, испуњена трошним, безструктурним, сиво-ружичастим садржајем. Јетра је била благо тупих рубова, светлосмеђе боје. Плућа су била мозаичног изгледа, са ситним, тачкастим, тамноцрвеним подручјима. Узорци ткива са обдукције фиксирани су у пуферизованом формалину и након обраде у аутоматском ткивном процесору обојени хематоксилином и еозином.
Хистопатолошким прегледом је запажено псеудомембранозно запаљење материце са великом количином фибринонекротичног садржаја у којем су уочене колоније бактерија, док је мишићни слој био прожет интензивним крвављењима. Уочена су крвављења и у мозгу, плућима, срцу, бубрезима, јетри и цревима. Местимично се у крвним судовима мањег промера уочавао фибрински тромб. У плућима је запажен периваскуларни едем, док су у јетри уочена расута некротична подручја и мултифокални хепатитис, а код једне животиње су били присутни и знаци регенерације хепатоцита (увећане ћелије са базофилијом цитоплазме, двоједарне ћелије, крупна једра). Микробиолошким испитивањем узорака органа утврђено је присуство бактерије Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica серотип Typhimurium (Salmonella Typhimurium)., Chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera) are small mammals of the order Rodentia and the family Chinchilidae with natural habitats in the Andes in South America. They are kept in zoos, as pets and farmed for fur. Salmonellosis is a zoonotic disease known worldwide. It is caused by bacteria from the genus Salmonella, which are considered strictly pathogenic in mammals and birds. In chinchillas, infection with Salmonella sp. is usually in the form of septicemia. This paper describes pathomorphological changes in chinchillas died from salmonellosis.
Carcasses of two chinchillas with bloody vulvar discharge noticed clinically were delivered to the Department of pathology. External examination revealed that animals were in good body condition, with the tan-red stained perianal area and dark red secret from the vulva. An internal examination showed an enlarged, bluish-red uterus with accentuated vasculature filled with friable, amorphous greyish-pink content. The liver was slightly enlarged and pale tan. Lungs had a mosaic appearance with punctuated dark red areas. Necropsy tissue samples were fixed in buffered formalin, processed in an automatic tissue processor and stained with hematoxylin and eosin.
Microscopic examination showed pseudomembranous inflammation of the uterus with a large amount of fibrinonecrotic content in which many bacterial colonies were present. At the same time in muscle layers, there was intense hemorrhage. Hemorrhages were also seen in the brain, lungs, heart, kidney, liver and intestine. Occasionally in small blood vessels, there was fibrin thrombus. In the lungs, perivascular edema was noticed. The liver had disseminated necrotic areas and multifocal hepatitis, and in one animal, there were signs of hepatocyte regeneration (enlarged cells with cytoplasmic basophilia, binucleated cells, and large nuclei). Pregled češćih patoloških stanja reptila

AB  - Klasa gmizavaca/reptila (Reptilia) predstavlja heterogenu klasu životinja koja
broji preko 6000 vrsta koje su podeljene u dve potklase – potklasa Anapsida u koju
spada red:kornjača (Testudines, Chelonia) i potklasa Lepidosauria u koju spada red
zmija i guštera (Squamata) sa dva podreda – podred guštera (Lacertilia) i podred
zmija (Ophidia). U drugu potklasu Archosauria spada red krokodila (Crocodylia).
Manji broj predstavnika redova unutar ove klase se gaje kao egzotični ljubimci: zmije
(loptasti pitoni, boe, kukuruzni smukovi i dr.), kornjače (amazonska crvenouha
kornjača, grčka čančara i dr.) i gušteri (iguane, bradate agame, kameleoni, gekoni i dr.).
Promena percepcije vezane za reptile dovela je do njihove popularizacije kao kućnih
ljubimaca na globalnom nivou, a takođe i kod nas. Razlozi držanja reptila kao kućnih
ljubimaca može da varira od trivijalnih (radoznalost, statusni simbol), psihološki
(fasciniranje okoline, savladavanje fobije), praktični (kao alternativa
konvencionalnim kućnim ljubimcima – sisarima i pticama zbog alergijskih razloga),
akademski (profesionalni biolozi) ili ekonomski (odgajivači, prodavnice kućnih
ljubimaca).
Ova klasa životinja ima heterogene anatomske karakteristike – koža sa krljuštima,
oklop, tubularna građa tela i shodno tome prilagođenu građu organa, kao i brojne
karakteristične fiziološke osobenosti i specifičnosti (različitosti terestrijalnih,
semiakvatičnih i akvatičnih vrsta, kao i herbivornih, insektivornih i karnivornih vrsta,
regulacija telesne temperature, karakteristike metabolizma hranljivih materija i
lekova). Gmizavci su kolokvijalno poznati kao hladnokrvne ili ektotermne ili
poikilotermne (grčki ποικιλος - raznovrstan, θερμος - toplota) životinje čija regulacija
telesne temperature zavisi od spoljašnjih izvora, kao što su sunčeva svetlost ili
zagrejana površina kamena ili kod gmizavaca u zatočeništvu ili kućnih ljubimaca
veštački izvor toplote (teratorijumski grejači, sijalice, UV lampe). Fiziologija i
metabolizam ovih životinja u velikoj meri zavise od njihove telesne temperature.
Uslovi držanja i dobrobit igraju važnu ulogu u održavanju zdravstvenog stanja kao i
lečenju gmizavaca. Upravo nedovoljno poznavanje anatomskih i fizioloških osobina i specifičnosti
reptila, ambijentalnih zahteva držanja i načina ishrane kako od strane vlasnika tako i
od strane veterinara mogu da se razviju različita patološka stanja kod ovih životinja.
Takođe, kao i kod drugih životinjskih vrsta do pojave i razvoja patoloških stanja
dovode i brojni infektivni agensi.
Dijagnostika oboljenja reptila zasniva se na kliničkim a ponekad i metodama
patološke morfologije uključujući makroskopski, histopatološki i citološki pregled.
Patološka stanja i oboljenja organa i organskih sistema reptila mogu se klasifikovati
na bolesti kože, lokomotornog, digestivnog, respiratornog, cirkulatornog,
imunološkog, urinarnog, reproduktivnog, nervnog i endokrinog sistema.
Na osnovu etiolških faktora patološka stanja i oboljenja reptila mogu se
klasifikovati na infektivna i neinfektivna oboljenja. U okviru infektivnih se ubrajaju
virusna (Reptarenavirus - Boid Inclusion Body Disease - BIBD, Nidovirus, Herpesvirus,
Adenovirus, Paramyxovirus, Iridovirus, Parvovirus, mešane virusne infekcije),
bakterijska (mikobakterioza (Mycobacterium spp.), devrisiaza (Devriesea agamarum),
salmoneloza (Salmonella spp.), mikoplazmoza (Mycoplasma spp.), hlamidioza
(Chlamydophila pneumoniae), dermatofiloza (Dermatophilus chelone) i druge
bakterije), parazitska (ektoparaziti i endoparaziti a naročito su značajni krvni
paraziti) i gljivična (Chrysosporium – CANV Chrysosporium anamorph of Nannizziopsis
vriesii koji uzrokuje tzv. “Yellow fungus” disease, Mucor, Fusarium, Candida,
Penicillium, Beauveria, Colletotrichum, Coccidiodes, Cryptococcus, Paecilomyces,
Aspergillus, Geotrichum, Sporotrichium i druge) oboljenja. U neinfektivna spadaju
degenerativna, metabolička (urikoza, metaboličko oboljenje kostiju – Metabolic Bone
Disease - MBD, lipidoza), neoplastična i druga oboljenja.

Značaj ovariohisterektomije kunića

AB  - Porastom broja kunića (Oryctolagus cuniculus) kao kućnih ljubimaca, dostupnost
profilaktičkih i terapijskih procedura koje ovim životinjama obezbeđuju duži
i kvalitetniji život je postala neophodna. Jedna od najznačajnijih jeste sterilizacija
ženki. Adenokarcinom materice je maligna neoplazma koja se razvija kod do 80%
ženki uzrasta preko 4 godine. Ovi tumori su visokog onkogenog potencijala. Metastaze
su najčešće prisutne na parenhimu pluća. Klinički simptomi koji se javljaju
nekoliko meseci nakon pojave primarne neoplastične lezije su hematurija, vaginalno
krvarenje, inapetenca i letargija. Trenutno, jedina pouzdana metoda profilakse,
ali i terapije adenokarcinoma materice kod kunića jeste ovariohisterektomija.
Izbor medikamentoznog protokola i prognoza zavise od stepena progresije
neoplastičnih promena i opšteg stanja jedinke.

Ovariohisterektomija afričkih patuljastih ježeva

AB  - Zbog naglog porasta popularnosti afričkih patuljastih ježeva (Ateletrix albiventris),
koji do skora nisu držani kao ljubimci, ispitivanja patogeneze, dijagnostike
i terapije mnogih oboljenja ove vrste životinja su sve brojnija. Neoplastična
oboljenja predstavljaju jedno od najčešćih patoloških stanja kod ove vrste životinja.
Kod ženki starih preko godinu dana, karcinom stromalnih ćelija materice je
najzastupljenija forma neoplazmi. Ovo su maligni tumori niskog metastatskog potencijala.
Klinički simptomi su u najvećem broju slučajeva hematurija i vaginalno
krvarenje. Sumnja na neoplastičnu promenu materice se postavlja na osnovu nalaza
opšteg kliničkog i ultrazvučnog pregleda. Iako je pojava metastaza ovog tipa
tumora veoma retka, kontinuirano krvarenje, kompresija organa abdominalne duplje
i sekundarne bakterijske infekcije su komplikacije koje se veoma često javljaju
i mogu da dovedu do letalnog ishoda. Preventivna ovariohisterektomija predstavlja
jedinu sigurnu metodu profilakse pojave ovog oboljenja.

abstract = "Zbog naglog porasta popularnosti afričkih patuljastih ježeva (Ateletrix albiventris),
koji do skora nisu držani kao ljubimci, ispitivanja patogeneze, dijagnostike
i terapije mnogih oboljenja ove vrste životinja su sve brojnija. Neoplastična
oboljenja predstavljaju jedno od najčešćih patoloških stanja kod ove vrste životinja.
Kod ženki starih preko godinu dana, karcinom stromalnih ćelija materice je
najzastupljenija forma neoplazmi. Ovo su maligni tumori niskog metastatskog potencijala.
Klinički simptomi su u najvećem broju slučajeva hematurija i vaginalno
krvarenje. Sumnja na neoplastičnu promenu materice se postavlja na osnovu nalaza
opšteg kliničkog i ultrazvučnog pregleda. Iako je pojava metastaza ovog tipa
tumora veoma retka, kontinuirano krvarenje, kompresija organa abdominalne duplje
i sekundarne bakterijske infekcije su komplikacije koje se veoma često javljaju
i mogu da dovedu do letalnog ishoda. Preventivna ovariohisterektomija predstavlja
jedinu sigurnu metodu profilakse pojave ovog oboljenja.",

AB  - Protozoa of the genus Giardia cause the disease giardiosis in a large number of animal
species, but also in humans. This disease can be either subclinical or followed by diarrhea,
malabsorption, weight loss and stunted growth. The aim of this study was to examine the
presence of Giardia sp. in different species of animals in Belgrade Zoo (asymptomatic
infection) and to compare the sensitivity of parasitological and molecular-genetic
methods. Examination of the presence of Giardia sp. protozoa was performed in 52
fecal samples, using fecal fl otation and molecular-genetic PCR method. No positive
samples were detected when deploying the parasitological method, while PRC analysis
revealed the presence of Giardia sp. in one animal - ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta),
which indicates the advantage of the molecular-genetic method over the parasitological
one. The absence of Giardia sp. in other samples can be explained by adequate housing
conditions, successful implementation of hygienic and sanitary measures, as well as
good veterinary practice. Use of PCR method for testing the presence of Giardia sp.
showed a higher sensitivity when compared to the fecal fl otation method.

Uzroci nastanka, dijagnostika i sanacija bolesti zuba kunića

AB  - Patologija zuba je jedan od najčešćih zdravstvenih problema kunića koji se drže
kao kućni ljubimci. Bolesti zuba su kod ove vrste podeljene na urodjene i stečene, s
malokluzijom kao najčešćim kliničkim nalazom u oba slučaja. Iako etiologija stečene
dentalne bolesti nije u potpunosti razjašnjena, nedovoljan unos abrazivne hrane
(sena) i metabolička bolest kostiju se smatraju najznačajnijim predisponirajućim
faktorima. Težina kliničke slike zavisi od stepena progresije bolesti zuba. U početnom
stadijumu razvoja stečene bolesti zuba jedinke su najčešće asimptomatske.
Zbog učestalosti patologije zuba i velikih razlika u kliničkoj slici kod obolelih,
detaljan pregled usne duplje bi trebalo da predstavlja sastavni deo opšteg kliničkog
pregleda kunića. Ukoliko postoji sumnja na prisustvo patologije zuba, pristupa se
specijalističkim metodama, odnosno stomatološkom pregledu u opštoj anesteziji i
imidžing dijagnostici. Metode lečenja bolesti zuba najčešće podrazumevaju
kombinaciju medikamentozne terapije i koronalne redukcije (brušenja zuba), uz
mogućnost ekstrakcije i hirurške sanacije. Adekvatno poznavanje anatomije i
fiziologije kunića, kao i patofiziologije dentalne bolesti, neophodno je za pravilnu
dijagnostiku i lečenje ovog učestalog oboljenja.

The COVID-19 pandemic affects owners walking with their dogs

AB  - The COVID-19 pandemic imposed a strict state of emergency on Belgrade residents with a curfew and restriction on movement. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine how the measures introduced as a consequence of this disease in the capital of Serbia affected the duration of walking time of owners and their dogs. The study allowed for sociodemographics of owners, characteristics of their homes and breeds of dog. The research was conducted in the period from March 22 to April 4, 2020. In general, the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions reduced the duration of dog walks and owners’ walking time. Of the 216 adult dog owners, 59% walked their dogs successfully (≥150 min/week) before the state of emergency. The number of owners who walked their dogs for ≥150 min/week decreased to only 44% (N = 96) during the state of emergency. The pandemic also decreased the number of owners who achieved total walking times of ≥150 min/week, so only 56% of them were successful in total walking time during the state of emergency (100% were successful before the pandemic, as this was one of inclusion criteria). This difference was statistically significant (P < 0.01). A Wilcoxon signed-rank test found significant differences in the total walking time before and during the state of emergency, with regard to characteristics of the owner, home and dog, with strong effect sizes for these differences (P < 0.01). McNemar's test showed that female owners, owners aged 45-64 years and owners with high income who were previously successful in walking their dogs (≥150 min/week) were more affected by the pandemic in regard to walking time with dogs (P < 0.01). Significant correlations (P < 0.01) were observed between dog breed and walking time before the state of emergency; age and walking time with the dog during the state of emergency and; age and total walking time during the state of emergency. Comparisons between different categories within the same characteristics (owner demographics, home characteristics and dog breed) by Fisher's exact test found significant differences only between younger and older dog owners in total walking time during the state of emergency (P < 0.01). Younger owners were significantly more successful in achieving ≥150 min/week total walking time than owners aged 45-64. The COVID-19 pandemic has left some owners jobless and allowed them to spend more time walking dogs. The occurrence of this disease has led to changes in the social structure of households and in the daily habits of household members. These factors have affected on the length of walking time of owners and their dogs in Belgrade.

Kinds of pet chosen and manner of pet acquisition during COVID 19 in Serbia

AB  - In mid-March 2020, a state of emergency was declared in Serbia in order to prevent the spread of COVID 19. Many activities of Serbian citizens were limited or completely stopped. Citizens had to spend most of their time confined in their homes. However, some still wanted and managed to acquire pets. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine which kinds of pets (dogs, cats and non-traditional animals) the residents of Serbia acquired during the first year of the COVID 19 pandemic and in which manner (purchase, adoption or gift). If the pets were acquired by adoption, the participants were asked from what sources they adopted them. Finally, how the characteristics of the owner and their household influenced the adoption of pets was examined. A total of 566 pet owners who acquired pets in the pre-COVID 19 and COVID 19 periods participated in the research. The COVID pandemic reduced the number of pet owners 2.7-fold in 2020 compared to 2019. Dogs were the most favourite pets acquired before (43%) and during (43%) the pandemic. During the pandemic, 61% of pets were acquired by adoption and the percentage of dogs, cats and non-traditional pets adopted directly from previous owners increased by 32%, 13% and 12%, respectively. The probability of acquiring pets by adoption was significantly increased by the presence of people older than 65 in the household (OR=2.56; P=0.02), the absence of children up to 5 years of age (OR=0.17; P<0.001) in the household, lower monthly incomes (OR=0.47; P<0.001), the greater available free time of the owner (OR=2.09; P<0.001), and the period of adoption (OR=2.42; P<0.001).

Višestruki epitelni tumori kože i sluznice jezika miša (Mus musculus) sa karakteristikama papilomavirusne infekcije – prikaz slučaja

AB  - Познато је да папиломавируси инфицирају дивље врсте мишева и пацова, као и
друге дивље глодаре, а 2011. године је откривена инфекција и код кућног миша
(Mus musculus).
У овом раду је описан приказ случаја вишеструких епителних тумора коже и
слузнице језика код миша. Миш, женка, стара 8 месеци, након појаве великог
броја чворова на кожи целог тела еутаназирана је и донесена на обдукцију. Два
месеца раније хируршки је уклоњена у том тренутку једина туморска маса на
кожи са хистопатолошком дијагнозом трихоепителиома. Узорци ткива са
обдукције фиксирани су у пуферизованом формалину и након обраде у

Макроскопски су се уочавале мултифокалне, округле до овалне
пролиферативне промене на кожи промера од 4 mm до 3 cm, чврсто-еластичне
конзистенције, сиво-беле боје на пресеку, местимично са улегнутим
некротичним центром. Парцијалним скидањем коже уочено је да описане
промене не продиру у дубља ткива. Две промене сличних макроскопских
карактеристика промера око 4 mm уочене су на дорзалној страни језика.
Хистопатолошким прегледом уочене су јасно ограничене, ендофитичне,
местимично конфлуентне новотворевине сачињене од умножених епителних
ћелија. Оне на слузници језика одговарале су налазу папилома, док су на кожи
поред папилома уочене и туморске масе сачињене од умножених епителних
ћелија пореклом од длачног фоликула местимично са јасним знацима трихогене
диференцијације (трихоепителиоми). Туморске ћелије показале су знаке
папиломавирусне инфекције – увећану плаво-сиву цитоплазму, вакуолизацију
цитоплазме, једарне инклузије, вакуолизацију једра, присуство коилоцита.
Анамнестички подаци, клиничка слика и патоморфолошки налаз указују на
инфективну, највероватније вирусну етиологију туморских пролиферата која
одговара папиломавирусу мишева.
AB  - It is known that papillomaviruses infect wild species of rats and mice, as well as other
wild rodents, and in 2011 infection in house mice (Mus musculus) was discovered.
In this paper a case of multiple epithelial tumors of skin and lingual mucosa was
reported. Female mouse, 8 months old, due to a large number of skin nodules was
euthanized and sent to necropsy. Two months earlier single nodular skin mass that
was at that time present was surgically removed with a histopathological diagnosis of
trichoepithelioma. Necropsy tissue samples were fixed in buffered formalin,
processed in an automatic tissue processor and stained with hematoxylin and eosin.

necrotic center were noted. Partial skinning revealed that these changes did not

confluent neoplasms made of proliferated epithelial cells. Those on the lingual
mucosa were consistent with papilloma, while on the skin besides papillomas there
were masses that consisted of proliferated epithelial cells of hair follicles with signs
of trichogenic differentiation (trichoepitheliomas). Tumor cells showed signs of
papillomavirus infection – enlarged blue-grey cytoplasm, cytoplasm vacuolization,
intranuclear inclusions, nuclear vacuolization, and koilocytes.
Anamnesis, clinical data and pathomorphological reports strongly suggest infective,
most probably viral etiology of described neoplasms that were consisted with
papillomavirus infection in mice.

AB  - Kunići i afrički patuljasti ježevi su vrste koje se sve češće pojavljuju kao pacijenti u veterinarskim ambulantama. Ove vrste životinja
imaju veliki broj anatomskih i fizioloških specifičnosti koje je potrebno
poznavati da bi se mogla razumeti i njihova patologija. Prepoznavanje simptoma bolesti od strane vlasnika nije jednostavno jer i kunići i
ježevi mogu jako dugo da prikrivaju simptome. Oni u prirodi predstavljaju plen i na taj način se štite od predatora. Do ispoljavanja kliničke
slike dolazi tek kada se iscrpu svi kompenzacioni mehanizmi jedinke.
Vlasnici najčešće uočavaju naglu pojavu simptoma i dolaze u veterinarsku ambulantu sa pretpostavkom da se radi o akutnom procesu. U
tom trenutku se, pored znakova primarnog oboljenja uočavaju i brojni simptomi sekundarnih procesa, što čini dijagnostiku izazovnom. Da
bi se utvrdio primarni uzrok oboljenja potrebno je odabrati adekvatan
uzorak za ispitivanje i primeniti odgovarajuće specijalističke dijagnostičke metode, ponekad uz primenu anestezije. Naravno, svaka od
ovih metoda mora da se prilagodi vrsti da bi rezultati mogli da se pravilno interpretiraju. Kada se postavi dijagnoza, neophodno je odabrati
odgovarajući terapijski protokol (konzervativan i radikalne). Na osnovu navedenih informacija, potrebno je da se veterinari upoznaju sa
specifičnostima patologije, dijagnostike i terapije ovih vrsta životinja.
AB  - Rabbits and African pygmy hedgehogs are, other than dogs and cats, most common
pets seen in veterinary practice in Serbia. These animals have a number of specific
anatomical and physiological traits, of which veterinarian must be aware in order to
understand their pathology. Owners often have trouble recognizing the symptoms, because
both rabbits and hedgehogs can hide their symptoms for quite a long time, due to them
both being a pray species in the wildernes. Signs of disease usually manifest only after all
compensatory mechanisms are exhausted. Owners usually notice sudden onset of disease
and come to their veterinary practitioner with an assumption that their pet is suffering from
an acute condition. At that time, other than signs of primary illness, many symptoms of
secondary processes are also present, which makes diagnosing more difficult. To determine
the primary cause of disease, the use of special diagnostic procedures is often necessary,
sometimes it is required that they should be done under anesthesia. Naturally, each of
these procedures must be adjusted to the species, so that the results could be adequately
interpreted. After establishing the diagnosis, next critical point is choosing appropriate
therapeutical protocol, namely deciding between conservative and radical approach. For
these reasons it is necessary to familiarize veterinarians with specific aspects of pathology,
diagnostics and therapy of these species.

AB  - Egzotični kućni ljubimci se sve češće sreću u veterinarskim ambulantama u Srbiji. Međutim, veterinari u Srbiji još uvek nisu prilagodili svoj rad ovoj
vrsti pacijenata. U ovoj studiji je analiziran broj pacijenata na Klinici za male životinje
Fakulteta veterinarske medicine, Univerziteta u Beogradu. Poređenjem broja egzotičnih kućnih ljubimaca i pasa i mačaka, koji su dovođeni na pregled u periodu 2015. do
2020. godine, utvrđeno je da se broj egzotičnih kućnih ljubimaca iz godine u godinu povećava, dok broj pasa i mačaka stagnira. Grupa koja je zabeležila najveći apsolutni rast
su bile ptice, dok je vrsta životinja sa najvećim relativnim rastom bio afrički patuljasti
jež. Jedina grupa egzotičnih kućnih ljubimaca koja nije zabeležila rast su bili gmizavci.
Za povećanje broja egzotičnih kućnih ljubimaca u maloj praksi, odgovoran je veći broj
faktora i to od promene načina života ljudi, u koje se ove životinje bolje uklapaju od tradicionalnih ljubimaca, preko sve veće dostupnosti egzotičnih kućnih ljubimaca, do toga
da ove životinje predstavljaju svojevrstan statusni simbol. Kada se sve ovo uzme u obzir, jasno je da su egzotični kućni ljubimci na putu da postanu vrlo značajna grana veterinarske medicine u Srbiji i da veterinari moraju da se prilagode novim trendovima.
AB  - Exotic pets are increasingly present in veterinary clinics in Serbia.
However, veterinarians in Serbia have not yet adapted to this group of patients. This
study analyzed the number of patients at the Clinic for Small Animals of the Faculty of
Veterinary Medicine, University of Belgrade. By comparing the number of exotic pets
and dogs and cats that came for exemination in the period from 2015 to 2020, it was
determined that the number of exotic pets increases from year to year, while the number of dogs and cats stagnates. As for the number of exotic pets, the group that recorded the highest absolute growth were birds, while the species of animals with the highest
relative growth were African pigmy hedgehogs. The only group of exotic pets that did
not made any growth were reptiles. A number of factors are responsible for the increase
in the number of exotic pets in small practice, from the change in peoples’ lifestyle, in
which these animals fit better, through the increasing availability of exotic pets, to the
fact that these animals represent a status symbol. When all this is taken into account, it
is clear that exotic pets are on their way to becoming a very important branch of veterinary medicine in Serbia and that veterinarians must adapt to new trends.

AB  - Nowadays, illegal trafficking and smuggling of animals are among the greatest threats to many avian species. Most commonly smuggled birds belong to parrots, song birds, raptor species and owls. All of these species are protected by national and international legislations. In order to prevent and reduce wildlife trafficking, DNA methods have become an important forensic tool in species and sex identification. In this study, CHD1R/CHD1F primer pair was used to amplify a part of the CHD1 gene from 65 birds that belong to 43 species. For 36 species this is the first time that the length of CHD1 amplicons was measured for the purpose of species determination. The results were visualized using capillary electrophoresis and enabled simultaneous determination of sex and species. Based on the number of amplicons (two in females, one in males) sex was successfully determined in all species, even in cases where gel electrophoresis failed to give results. Moreover, the species was successfully determined in most bird species based on the species-specific sizes of CHD1 amplicon. The method used in this study is of great importance for veterinary forensic medicine and the prevention of wildlife smuggling. Still, further work is necessary to confirm the effectiveness of the method in all bird species.
AB  - Ilegalna trgovina i krijumčarenje divljim vrstama danas predstavlja jednu od najvećih pretnji koje ugrožavaju populacije velikog broja ptica. Najčešće vrste kojima se ilegalno trguje su papagaji, ptice pevačice, grabljivice i sove. Sve ove vrste ptica su zaštićene nacionalnim ili međunarodnim zakonskim regulativama. U cilju prevencije i smanjenja ilegalne trgovine, molekularne metode su postale bitno forenzičko oruđe u identifi kaciji vrste i pola zaštićenih vrsta ptica. U ovom istraživanju ispitano je ukupno 65 uzoraka ptica (ukupno 43 vrste), a u cilju umnožavanja dela CHD1 gena korišćen je CHD1R/CHD1F par prajmera. Za 36 vrsta ovo je prvi put da je dužina CHD1 gena određivana u cilju identifi kacije vrste. Dobijeni produkti su vizuelizovani koristeći kapilarnu elektroforezu i omogućili su simultano određivanje pola i vrste. Na osnovu analize amplikona (dva kod ženke, jedan kod mužjaka), pol je uspešno identifi kovan kod svih vrsta, čak i kod onih kod kojih gel elektroforeza nije bila uspešna.Vrsta je uspešno određena kod većine ptica na osnovu veličine CHD1 amplikona specifične za vrstu. Plasma glutathione peroxidase (GPx 3) activity in the freshwater turtle trachemys scripta elegans after isoflurane inhalation anesthesia

AB  - Introduction. Glutathione peroxidases are selenoenzymes which have a crucial role in the protection of animals against oxidative stress. 
Materials and Methods. From September 2017 to April 2018, a group of eight red-eared sliders were admitted at the Clinic for Small Animals, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Belgrade for elective diagnostic celioscopy. The turtles were of unknown age, weight from 1.20 kg to 1.86 kg. The anesthesia protocol involved using ketamine and medetomidine, both at a low dosage (10 mg kg-1 and 0.1 mg kg-1, respectively) as induction, after which anesthesia was maintained using isoflurane at 3% (vapor setting) in 100% oxygen (0.5 L min-1). Medetomidine was reversed with atipamezole (0.2 mg kg-1), given intramuscularly. The elective celioscopy was performed according to standard protocols. One day prior to anesthesia, heparinized blood samples were taken using the subcarapacial venous plexus for venipuncture. The second sampling took place three hours after the anesthetics were administered. 
Results and Conclusions. GPx3 activity in the blood plasmas (n=8) was measured by the coupled test as described by Günzler et al. (1974). Data were tested for normality by the Shapiro-Wilk normality test and the groups were compared using a paired t-test. 
Blood plasma GPx3 activity was significantly higher (p=0.009) after a three-hour recovery period from inhalation anesthesia performed for elective diagnostic celioscopy, than before anesthesia. The measured post-anesthesia GPx3 activities were, on average, 
80% higher than the measurements prior to anesthesia. It can be concluded that the statistically significant increase in the activity of plasma GPx3 from 91.02±36.05 mKat L-1 prior to anesthesia to 160.21±58.94 mKat L-1 three hours after anesthesia is due to the change in oxygen saturation. This is increased to 100% during the procedure, thus exposing the turtles to conditions of high oxygen saturation.
AB  - Uvod. Glutation peroksidaze su selenoenzimi koji igraju ključnu ulogu u zaštiti životinja od oksidativnog stresa. 
Materijal i metode. Od septembra 2017. do aprila 2018. godine, grupa od osam crvenouhih kornjača je primljena na Kliniku za male životinje, Fakulteta Veterinarske Medicine, Univerziteta u Beogradu zbog izvođenja elektivne dijagnostičke celioskopije. Kornjače su bile nepoznate starosti, mase između 1,20 kg i 1,86 kg. Anastetički protokol je uključivao primenu ketamina (10 mg kg-1) i medetomidina (0.1 mg kg-1) za indukciju, oba u niskim dozama, nakon čega je anestezija održavana primenom izoflurana u koncentraciji od 3% (podešen na isparavanje) u 100% kiseoniku (0.5 L min-1). Dejstvo medetomidina je neutralizovano atipamezolom (0.2 mg kg-1), aplikovanim intramuskularno. Elektivna celioskopija je izvedena u skladu sa standardnim protokolima. Heparinizovani uzorci krvi su uzeti jedan dan pre uvođenja u anesteziju venepunkcijom iz subkarapacijalnog venskog pleksusa. Drugo uzorkovanje krvi je uzvršeno tri sata nakon administracije anestetika. 
Rezultati i zaključak. GPx3 aktivnost u krvnoj plazmi (n=8) je izmerena primenom kuplovane reakcije, kao što su opisali Günzler i sar. (1974). Normalna distribucija podataka je testirana pomoću Shapiro - Wilk testa normalnosti (p>0,05), a grupe su poređene koristeći t test za zavisne uzorke. 
Aktivnost GPx3 u krvnoj plazmi je bila značajno viša (p=0.009) u uzorcima uzetim nakon trosatnog perioda oporavka od inhalacione anestezije aplikovane radi izvođenja elektivne celioskopije, nego u uzorcima uzetim pre aplikovanja anestezije. Vrednosti GPx3 izmerene nakon anestezije bile su u proseku 80% više od vrednosti pre anestezije. Može se zaključiti da je statistički značajan porast u aktivnosti GPx3 u plazmi od 91.02±36.05 mKat L-1, pre anestezije do 160.21±58.94 mKat L-1, tri sata nakon anestezije uzrokovan promenom u saturaciji kiseonika. Tokom intervencije saturacija kiseonika se povećava i do 100% čime se kornjače uvode u uslove visoke saturacije kiseonikom.

AB  - Kunići, glodari i afrički patuljasti ježevi su sve češći pacijenti u veterinarskim ambulantama. Jedan od najčešćih razloga dovođenja ovih životinja kod veterinara je patologija genitalnog sistema. Naime, kod više od 50 procenata ženki kunića starijih od 4 godine javljaju se neoplazme materice, a kod više od 25 posto ženki zamoraca, starijih od 4 godine može da se dijagnostikuje pojava policističnih jajnika. Kod pacova i miševa oba pola, starijih od 2 godine, kod 30 posto slučajeva su prisutne neoplazme na mlečnim žlezdama i kod preko 50 procena- ta ženki ježeva se u toku života pojavi metritis ili neka vrsta neoplaz- mi materice. Ova statistika postaje još problematičnija kada se uzme u obzir da je većina neoplazmi na genitalnim organima ovih životinja (kod ježeva taj broj ide i do 95 posto) malignog karaktera. Jedini način da se sa sigurnošću prevenira razvoj ove patologije je pravovreme- na ovariohistirektomija. Ovariohistirektomija je i jedina vrsta terapije kada se dijagnostikuje većina nabrojanih stanja, ali kako se simptomi kod ovih životinja obično pojavljuju u poodmaklim stadijumima bolesti reproduktivnog sistema i kako većina ovih neoplazmi ima maligni po- tencijal, dešava se da dijagnoza bude postavljena kada se već razviju metastaze ili organizam bude iscrpljen. U takvim, teškim slučajevima, od jedne bezbedne i jednostavne procedure, ovariohistirektomija po- staje intervencija sa neizvesnim ishodom.

AB  - The aim of this study was to assess how red-eared sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans) respond to anaesthesia itself and coelioscopy. For that purpose, the turtles were anaesthetised with ketamine–medetomidine or propofol, and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) and the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) were determined by spectrophotometry. The possible genotoxic effects of the anaesthetic agents were estimated by comet assay. A total of 24 turtles were included in this study. The animals were divided into four groups according to the anaesthetic protocol and according to whether endoscopy would be performed. Significantly decreased activities of CAT were found only in the propofol group and in turtles undergoing coelioscopy. Both anaesthetic protocols induced significantly increased MDA levels, while no differences were observed after the intervention. A significant increase in GST activity was detected in turtles after both anaesthetic protocols, but after coelioscopy significant changes in GST activity were found only in the propofol group. However, no differences in SOD activity and no DNA damages were detected in either group. These findings suggest that ketamine–medetomidine may be more suitable anaesthetic agents in red-eared sliders than propofol.

Is PBFD simptomatology species specific rather then strain specific? – a case of 8 lovebirds

AB  - Eight lovebirds of both sexes and different age were admitted showing alterations in
behaviour and apathy. During the initial examination delamination of the beak was
noted in all birds and discrete areas of alopecia in three of eight birds. Based on clinical
experience, molecular diagnostic on PBFD, sequencing of obtained amplicons, and
histopathological examination were performed. All birds tested positive on the presence
of PBFD virus, despite the fact they did not exhibit expected clinical signs for PBFD.
Sequencing results showed 100% match with sequences previously isolated from parrots
with PBFD exhibiting classical PBFD manifestation. Histopathological examination
showed similar findings as in previously described cases of PBFD in parrots. Other
studies on psittacine birds correlate clinical manifestations and nucleotide variations
with geographic localization. Our results indicate that the clinical manifestation of the
disease is more dependent on bird species than on the genetic variation of the virus or
the geographical distribution.
AB  - Osam rozenkolisa oba pola različite starosti su primljeni na pregled zbog uočenih promena u ponašanju i apatije. Tokom inicijalnog pregleda kod svih ptica je uočena delaminacija kljuna, a kod tri jedinke bila su prisutna i diskretna polja alopecije. Na osnovu
kliničkog iskustva postavljena je sumnja na oboljenje bolest kljuna i perja te je urađena
molekularna dijagnostika na pristutvo virusa bolesti kljuna i perja, sekvencioniranje
dobijenih amplifikata i patohistološko ispitivanje. Rezultati ispitivanja su potvrdili prisustvo virusa u uzorcima od svih ispitivanih jedinki, poklapanje nukleotidnih sekvecni
od 100% sa uzorcima od drugih ptica sa drugačijom kliničkom slikom, a patohistološke promene su identične onima opisanim kod bolesti kljuna i perja. Studije brojnih
autora povezivale su kliničku manifestaciju bolesti sa nukleotidnim varijacijama ili geografskom lokalizacijom. Međutim, opisani rezultati bi mogli da ukazuju da je kliničko
ispoljavanje bolesti više zavisno od vrste domaćina nego od genotipa virusa koji bolest
izaziva i od teritorije na kojoj se bolest ispoljava.

Unilateral ureteral obstruction in a ferret - case report

AB  - A four-year old castrated male ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was presented with a 1-week history of gastrointestinal signs. The ultrasonographic findings showed mild right pelvic dilatation and hydroureter with obstruction at the ureterovesical junction. Conservative treatment resulted in clinical but no ultrasonography improvement. Three months later the ferret was presented with signs of gastrointestinal disease. Ultrasonography revealed progression of the process to mild hydronephrosis and further dilatation of the right ureter. Excretory urography confirmed the finding. Laboratory findings indicated renal failure with proteinuria. Ureteroneocystotomy was performed. A small amount of sludgy material was found at the ureteropelvic junction. The ferret died 4 months later due to pneumonia. Necropsy revealed multifocal tubulointerstitial lymphoplasmacytic nephritis.

Conservative treatment resulted in clinical but no ultrasonography improvement. Three months later the ferret was presented with signs of gastrointestinal disease. Ultrasonography revealed progression of the process to mild hydronephrosis and further dilatation of the right ureter. Excretory urography confirmed the finding. Laboratory findings indicated renal failure with proteinuria. Ureteroneocystotomy was performed. A small amount of sludgy material was found at the ureteropelvic junction. The ferret died 4 months later due to pneumonia. Necropsy revealed multifocal tubulointerstitial lymphoplasmacytic nephritis.",

Neoplastična oboljenja malih sisara

AB  - Postoje brojni literaturni podaci o neoplastičnim
oboljenjima malih sisara. Kao i kod ostalih životinja
neoplazme se javljaju kod svih malih sisara. Svaka vrsta,
ponekad i rasa malih sisara ima predispoziciju ka limitiranom
broju, vrsti i tipu neoplastičnih oboljenja na različitim
organskim sistemima. Zbog te predispozicije neke od ovih
vrsta životinja služile su i kao eksperimentalni modeli za
proučavanje onkoloških stanja paralelnih u humanoj
medicini. S druge strane neke od vrsta malih sisara ranije su
gajenje u svrhu dobijanja krzna i samim tim imale limitiran
životni vek, tako da su se neoplastična oboljenja, kao
najčešće gerontološka oboljenja, retko javljala. U današnjim
uslovima ove životinje se gaje kao kućni ljubimci,
doživljavaju svoju fiziološku starost i samim tim incidenca
neoplastičnih oboljenja je u porastu. Generalno gledano, u
svetu je prisutna ekspanzija neoplastičnih oboljenja a razlozi
ovoj pojavi su brojni - podizanje starosne granice životinja,
viša svest vlasnika, unapređenje dijagnostike i dr.
Mali sisari su sve češće drže kao kućni ljubimci i
između ostalih neretko se uočavaju i neoplastična oboljenja.
Svako potencijalno neoplastično oboljenje neophodno je
pravilno dijagnostikovati, u čemu se ogleda i krucijalni značaj veterinarske patologije, da bi se na osnovu prave dijagnoze
uspostavio adekvatan tretman ovih pacijenata.
Kabinet za bolesti malih sisara i egzota pri Katedri za
bolesti kopitara, mesojeda, živine i divljači u saradnji sa
Katedrom za patološku morfologiju blisko sarađuje u oblasti
dijagnostike i zdravstvene zaštite malih sisara i u ovom radu
opisani su neki od slučajeva iz oblasti onkologije, tj.
neoplastičnih oboljenja kunića, zamoraca, hrčaka, činčila,
pacova, feretki i afričkih patuljastih ježeva.
