AB - An innovative approach to assess health status in animals is by analyzing oral fluid biomarkers. Salivary secretion of amylase (AMY), cholinesterase (CHE), haptoglobin (HPT), adenosine deaminase (ADA), and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) is altered in stress, inflammation, immune response, and salivary gland injury. Moreover, it was shown that oral fluid is an effective matrix for detection of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV). This experimental study aimed to investigate if salivary biomarkers of stress, inflammation, immunity and tissue injury are changed in gilts with PRRSV. Two groups, subsequently infected and PRRSV-saliva positive, and one healthy group were included, each consisting of 16 replacement gilts, hybrids of Landrace Large White. Starting from day zero (T0), during the next four weeks, oral fluid samples were collected using cotton ropes, disposed for half-an-hour in the pens. Total protein and HPT concentrations were determined by spectrophotometry. Levels of AMY, CHE, and ADA were evaluated using commercial tests. Gelatinolytic activity of MMPs was estimated by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). For each analyte and group, results were given at all sampling points (T0-T4). The infected groups had detectable while the control had undetectable HPT levels. The infected gilts had lower activity of stress (AMY, CHE) and immunity (ADA) biomarkers, compared to the controls. Gelatinolytic analysis revealed MMP-2 and -9 signals in the PRRSV groups, and zymogen and active MMP-9 in the controls. Haptoglobin and MMP-2 and -9 in both of the infected groups contribute to the local salivary gland inflammatory response. Lower AMY and CHE activity in the oral fluid of PRRSV gilts could indicate altered salivary gland function that led to an unexpected drop in the stress markers, while lower ADA levels can be attributed to the suppressed immune response. All analyzed parameters could be valuable in testing porcine reaction to infection.

AB - Acute B. canis infection can lead to an acute phase reaction (APR) in dogs. The parasite invades red blood cells causing
anemia through immune-mediated hemolysis and possible erythropoietic suppression. A regenerative response of the
erythroid lineage during the babesiosis has not been described in extension. This research examines hematologic parameters
focusing on the absolute reticulocyte count and apolipoprotein A I (ApoA I) level on the day of admission and 14 days after
treatment with imidocarb-dipropionate in young (n=11) and adult (n=11) dogs naturally infected with B. canis. Metabolic
and inflammatory processes were characterized by analyzing protein and lipid profiles, as well as ApoA I at specified time
points. Automated analyzers were used to determine complete blood count and biochemical parameters, while ApoA I was
assessed using radioimmunoassay. The reticulocyte count was determined using a manual method by means of supravital
staining. Both young and adult dogs with acute B. canis infection showed non-regenerative anemia without difference.
Fourteen days after successful treatment with imidocarb-dipropionate, the anemia was corrected and a high reticulocyte
count was observed (p<0.05). This indicates that the erythroid regenerative response was efficient in young and adult dogs,
although vital signs, leukocyte count and triglyceride concentration suggest a more intense APR in young dogs. A decrease
in ApoA I in both groups 14 days after treatment (p<0.01) confirmed that this lipoprotein acts as a positive acute-phase
protein in acute B. canis infection in dogs, but further studies are needed to connect its role in erythroid lineage regeneration.

AB - Introduction. Although thrombocytopenia is one of the hematological markers associated with babesia infection, it may not always be present1. Hematological indexes: the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and the mean platelet volume-to-platelet ratio (MPV/PLT) may be more sensitive markers of an ongoing infection. Objective. To investigate PLR and MPV/PLT in dogs infected with Babesia spp. with and without thrombocytopenia. Methods. Babesia spp. PCR-positive client‐owned dogs were divided into two groups according to platelet number: thrombocytopenic (n=34) and non-thrombocytopenic (n=30). Clinically healthy PCR-negative dogs on Babesia spp. (n=41) served as a control. A complete blood count was obtained on IDEXX ProCyte hematology analyzer and the non-parametric statistics tests were performed in the SPSS program. Results. PCR-positive dogs on Babesia spp. had lower median platelet counts compared to PCR-negative dogs (P<0.01). The MPV and MPV/PLT were higher in thrombocytopenic than in non-thrombocytopenic (P<0.01) and control dogs (P<0.01). There was no difference in MPV between PCR-positive non-thrombocytopenic dogs and PCR-negative control, while the MPV/PLT ratio had differences (P<0.01). The median number of lymphocytes did not differ between the examined groups. The PLR was lower in the thrombocytopenic than in the non-thrombocytopenic (P<0.01) and control group (P<0.01). However, PLR did not differ between
PCR-positive and PCR-negative non-thrombocytopenic dogs. Conclusion. Ratios could be useful and should be explored further. The MPV/PLT has the potential to distinguish babesia-positive from babesia-negative dogs and its diagnostic value needs more attention.

AB - Background: Given the stoic nature of donkeys, early clinical signs of illness may go unnoticed. Objective: Our study aimed to compare haemato-biochemical parameters and acute-phase proteins (APPs) as health status indicators in Balkan dairy donkeys in Serbia. Materials and methods: The study was conducted on two donkey farms: one located in an arid, hilly, forested area harboring 60 animals managed in a semiintensive system accounting for energy, protein, vitamin, and mineral requirements (Farm 1), and the other located in wetlands having 300 animals reared under the semi-extensive pasture-based system (Farm 2). Blood samples were collected from five (Farm 1) and 12 (Farm 2) clinically healthy randomly chosen jennies at the second half of gestational age, in the springtime. Haematology and biochemistry parameters were
determined using automated analysers, while haptoglobin (HP), ceruloplasmin (CP), and paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) were determined using spectrophotometry. Results: Haemoglobin (p=0.044), monocyte count (p=0.006), creatinine (p=0.027), urea (p=0.045), alkaline phosphatase (p=0.008), creatine kinase (p=0.020), and CP (p=0.018) were higher in Farm 1 than in Farm 2 donkeys. The values for HP and PON-1 did not differ between farms. All obtained values, including triglyceride concentration, matched reference intervals. Conclusions: Haemato-biochemical parameters and APPs indicated that despite differences that can be ascribed to the farm organization system, the donkeys did not have issues with metabolic or inflammatory diseases.

AB - We tested the hypothesis that age, breed, and sex are related to hematology, biochemistry, acute phase proteins (APPs), seroreactivity and level of parasitemia in dogs with an acute phase response (APR) due to Babesia canis infection. The study enrolled 61 privately owned dogs that naturally acquired B. canis infection. Groups were formed according to the age: young dogs less than one year, and adult dogs more than one year old. Moreover, the group of males was compared to females and purebred to mixed breed dogs. Seroreactivity was tested with immunofluorescence antibody test, level of parasitemia with real-time polymerase chain reaction (real-time PCR), hematology, and biochemistry with automatic analyzers, serum amyloid A with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, fibrinogen with heat precipitation and ceruloplasmin and paraoxonase-1 with manual spectrophotometric methods. For protein separation agarose gel electrophoresis was used. The main changes in the whole population of B. canis-infected dogs were fever, pancytopenia, and change in APPs level. One-third of young, and 96% of adult dogs were seropositive (P < 0.001). The level of parasitemia was higher in the young dogs (P < 0.001). Erythroid lineage parameters (P < 0.01), and leukocytes (P < 0.05) were lower in the young, when compared to the adult dogs. Young dogs had lower total globulins (P < 0.001), β- and γ-globulins (P < 0.001), and higher α-globulins (P = 0.022) than adult dogs. Young dogs had higher concentrations of phosphate (P = 0.003) and cholesterol (P < 0.001) and lower amylase (P = 0.014) and lipase activity (P = 0.020) than adult ones. Male dogs had lower neutrophil count than females (P = 0.035), and purebred dogs had more band neutrophils than mixed breed dogs (P = 0.004). In conclusion, dogs with natural Babesia canis infection at a young age have more severe anemia and APR including leukopenia than adults. Male and purebred dogs might also have more severe APR than females and mix-breeds, as they have more pronounced changes related to the myeloid lineage.

AB - Homocysteine (Hcy) was investigated as the biomarker of cardiac, renal, and gastrointestinal disorders
in dogs. Data about low Hcy concentrations in the systemic inflammatory response syndrome raised a hypothesis that
Hcy in dogs could be a negative acute-phase reactant. This survey compared Hcy concentrations, serum amyloid A
(SAA), and the routine laboratory parameters between healthy (HD, N=6) and dogs with inflammation of different
extent: mild (dirofilariosis (DIR), N=31), moderate (babesiosis (BAB), N=12), and severe (pyometra (PYO), N=8).
The BAB and PYO groups had lower Hcy er than HD. Also, the levels in the PYO group were below those in the
DIRO group. SAA had the inverse pattern. Across the groups, Hcy and SAA levels correlated negatively (ρ = -0.502,
P<0.001). Hcy and SAA correlated with the erythrocyte count, hematocrit, hemoglobin and mean cellular hemoglobin
concentrations, and neutrophil count, with correlations being positive for Hcy and negative for SAA. Among all dogs,
hemoglobin was the only independent predictor of Hcy concentration. Hcy levels in canine infections, decreased as
acute-phase reaction (APR) intensified. Also, they were related with the hematology changes accompanying the APR.
Further studies will establish the clinical potential of these alterations.

AB - Epidermis stem cells have a crucial role through the processes of proliferation and
differentiation, to replace cells that are constantly lost during tissue turnover or
following injury. On the other hand, thyroid hormones regulate the proliferation and
differentiation of epidermal cells and thus significantly influence the homeostasis
of the skin. It is well known that maternal hypothyroidism during pregnancy leads
to impaired development of many organ systems in their offspring. However, there
is a lack of data about the influence of maternal subclinical hypothyroidism during
pregnancy and lactation on the development of the skin and its derivatives in the litter.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of maternal thyroid dysfunction on
the development of the skin and its derivatives in their offspring in the early postnatal
period. Antithyroid substance 6-n-propyl-2-thiouracil was added into the drinking water
to female Albino Oxfords rats from the beginning of pregnancy and during lactation,
with the aim to induce subclinical and overt form of hypothyroidism. Skin samples
were taken from male pups within twenty-four hours and seven days after birth. The
main findings of this investigation were that both forms of maternal hypothyroidism
lead to serious damage of the epidermis in pups in terms of pronounced hyperkeratosis
and reduction of the germinal layer along with a reduced number of hair follicles and
their delayed morphogenesis. Epidermal impairments were more pronounced in pups
with the overt form of hypothyroidism while offspring with the subclinical form had
impairments that were less pronounced and delayed in occurrence.

AB - Otkriće vitamina K i njegovih antagonista među kojima se ističe varfarin, je
smešteno u prvu polovinu 20. veka, na dva kontinenta i u nekoliko država. Ono
povezuje rad istraživača u poljoprivredi, veterini, biohemiji, fiziologiji i medicini.
neplaniranih nalaza, dobrog instinkta, nesrećnih okolnosti i srećnih ishoda.
Sjedinjenim Američkim Državama dovelo do otkrivanja dikumarola i njegovog
antikoagulansima.
terapirati bez antikoagulantnih lekova.
sve starijeg svetskog stanovništva i suportivne terapije brojnih hroničnih bolesti.

Sjedinjenim Američkim Državama dovelo do otkrivanja dikumarola i njegovog
antikoagulansima.
terapirati bez antikoagulantnih lekova.
sve starijeg svetskog stanovništva i suportivne terapije brojnih hroničnih bolesti.",

AB - Red blood cell osmotic fragility (RBCOF) refers to susceptibility to hemolysis in
vivo and in vitro. An increase in mean cellular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC)
also reflects in vivo and in vitro hemolysis. Common inflammatory infectious
diseases in dogs are often characterized by an increase in MCHC; however, it is
not known if there is a concomitant increase in RBCOF. The objective of this
study was to determine RBCOF in dogs with babesiosis, dirofilariosis,
parvovirosis, pyometra, and canine distemper and to investigate whether RBCOF
correlates with routine hematologic and biochemical parameters and lipoprotein
fractions. The diagnosis of canine infectious disease was made and complete
blood count, serum biochemical profiles, and lipoprotein electrophoresis were
determined according to current institutional protocols. RBCOF of healthy
control (n=8) and infected dogs (n=73) was measured with a phosphate-buffered
saline dilution test, and mean corpuscular fragility (MCF) was calculated. MCF
was increased in dirofilariosis, pyometra, and distemper; MCHC was increased
in all infected groups; HDL was decreased in babesiosis, pyometra, and
distemper compared with healthy controls. However, no correlation was found
between these parameters. On the other hand, hematological and biochemical
parameters, that are highly predictive of specific infections, correlated with MCF:
ALP for babesiosis (r=0.415, P=0.035), urea (r=-0.488, P=0.034) for
dirofilariosis, and leukocyte count (r=-0.820, P=0.046) for pyometra. Although
elevated MCHC levels in all samples from infected dogs indicate hemolysis,
RBCOF was elevated only in dirofilariosis, pyometra, and canine distemper,
leading to the conclusion that these apparently related phenomena are controlled
by different mechanisms.

reaktivna hiperplazija, inflamatorne promena u tipu limfadenitisa, primarna
neoplazija limfnog čvora, infiltracija metastatskim tumorskim ćelijama ili
ekstramedularna hematopoeza.
pregled. Potrebno je prepoznati tip pozadinskog (engl. background) materijala
primenjujući prvo malo, a potom i veliko uveličanje.
morfologiju i međusobni odnos.
Osnovna pravila prilikom primene tankoiglene biopsije u pravljenju i

AB - Oxidative stress plays an important role in pathogenesis of idiopathic epilepsy (IE). Although IE is the most
common neurological condition, oxidant–antioxidant status in epileptic dogs is still unknown. The aim of this
study is to evaluate the serum oxidant-antioxidant status in dogs with newly diagnosed IE. The status in 15 dogs
with IE and 15 healthy dogs is estimated through spectrophotometric determination of two oxidant markers:
advanced oxidation protein products-albumin index (AOPP) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances
(TBARS); and three antioxidant markers: total thiols (R-SH) level, glutathione (GSH) level, and paraoxonase-1
(PON-1) activity. Also, butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) activity is assessed in both groups of dogs. Higher AOPP
is observed in the dogs with newly diagnosed IE, while TBARS level shows no difference when compared to the
healthy dogs. In contrast, lower levels of antioxidants (R-SH, GSH, and PON-1) and BChE activity are found in the
dogs with IE. No significant differences are observed in the oxidant and antioxidant markers and BChE activity
across the investigated IE cases with focal and generalized seizures. Our findings provide evidence that dogs with
IE are characterized by an impaired serum oxidant–antioxidant balance and lower BChE activity, which may
contribute to a better understanding of IE pathogenesis.

Osim
AB - It is estimated that the prevalence of kidney disease in the total population of dogs
and cats is about 0.5% to 3%, but in the geriatric population the prevalence of chronic
kidney disease reaches as much as 80%. In addition to breed predisposition and age,
hypercalcemia, heart disease, periodontal problems, cystitis, urolithiasis, hyperthyroidism,
metabolic disorders, and chronic or persistent infections are listed as risk factors.
Continuous monitoring of the renal function is important for timely and appropriate therapy
managment. Appropriate therapy can significantly slow down the progressive course of
renal disease. The classic markers to test the loss of kidney function are concentration
of urea and creatinine in the serum. Their concentration increases only when the reserve
capacity of the kidneys is lost, ie. when 75% of all nephrons fail. The workshop will explain
and demonstrate the importance of 1) symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) as a new, more
sensitive marker of renal dysfunction, 2) determining the urine protein-creatinine ratio, as
well as 3) differential diagnosis of glomerular or tubular proteinuria using polyacrilamid gel
electrophoresis.

AB - Progressive tissue injury in canine leishmaniosis (CL) is related to the deposition of
immune complexes, which induces vasculitis and leads to endothelial dysfunction.
Homocysteine (Hcy) increase may worsen endothelial dysfunction, but data concerning
its concentration in different CL stages and links to the acute phase response and
oxidative stress are missing. We compared Hcy levels between dogs with mild (N=24)
and moderate CL without treatment (N=17) and treated with anti-Leishmania drugs
and vitamin B supplements (N=9). Dogs with moderate CL, regardless of therapy
administration, had more distinct clinical signs, lower erythron values, and a higher level
of acute-phase proteins (APPs), IgG against Leishmania spp., urea and creatinine, than
dogs with mild CL. Hcy values did not differ between stages, but treated dogs had the
lowest levels of Hcy. An inverse relationship existed between Hcy and the CL stage,
therapy, levels of IgG, and clinical pathology data. The only positive relationship existed
between Hcy and the erythron state. The disease stage and therapeutic intervention
were not related to the oxidative stress level, except in the case of paraoxonase-1/
Hcy ratio, indicating favorable conditions for antioxidative defense in treated dogs. In
conclusion, changes in Hcy levels indicated its possible involvement with endothelial
dysfunction and inverse relationship to tissue injury evaluated by APPs. Finally, Hcy
might be an early marker of favorable conditions for endothelium recovery in CL

AB - The highest number of acute Babesia canis cases in dogs is recorded over the February-May (Feb-May) period, which also represents the optimal climate conditions for tick activity in Belgrade, Serbia. A possibility that the acute phase response is more intense in dogs developing the disease in the Feb-May period compared with the response in other time periods of the year was tested. A total of 63 client-owned dogs with acute B. canis infection were enrolled and the routine hematology and biochemistry parameters-serum amyloid A (SAA), IgG against B. canis, level of parasitemia, ceruloplasmin (CER), paraoxonase-1 (PON-1), and fibrinogen-were measured. Acute phase indexes (API) were calculated as (SAA×CER)/(Iron×PON-1) and (SAA×CER)/(Albumin×Iron). Statistics included Kruskal-Wallis test and logistic regression analysis. The results showed that in the Feb-May period, the following parameters were lower: creatinine, albumin, iron, and level of parasitemia. Furthermore, increased API values were more probable in the Feb-May than in the other periods. Together, higher acute phase response intensity and presumptive hemodilution in the Feb-May period indicate a more acute course of B. canis infection than in other time periods of the year.

Together, higher acute phase response intensity and presumptive hemodilution in the Feb-May period indicate a more acute course of B. canis infection than in other time periods of the year.",

AB - Background: Canine babesiosis is a disease with a seasonal character. We have
previously observed that in Belgrade, the capital of the Republic of Serbia, 60% of
cases with the acute-phase response (APR) give a notable maximum between mid-
February and May, the so-called “high season”. The other two peak seasons with
less pronounced maxima are in winter, from January to mid-February, and in
autumn, from October to December. Objectives: Based on clinical observations, we
postulate that dogs infected with B. canis in the “high season” develop a more
intense APR than dogs in the other two seasons. Material and Methods: To test this
hypothesis, we compare the relative parasite load and the level of acute-phase
proteins and reactants, their indexes (calculated as a combination of
concentrations of fast and slow positive, and fast and slow negative acute phase
reactants), as well as the concentration of coagulation factors, complete blood
count, and biochemistry among dogs that developed the disease in the autumn,
winter, and “high season”. Results: The relative parasite load is the lowest, and APR
Indexes are the highest in dogs infected in “high season”. These findings are
accompanied by relatively low creatinine and urea, implying that dogs in “high
season” had hemodilution, thus further suggesting short incubation. Unlike other
acute-phase proteins, fibrinogen showed the lowest concentration in “high
season”. Conclusion: Future research will help unveil the connection between
more intense APR and relatively low parasite load and fibrinogen concentration.

pre klanja, nisu uočene promene u izgledu i funkciji mišićno-skeletnog sistema.
Urađen je rutinski pregled ST kojim je opisana boja, prozirnost, viskoznost i broj ćelija.
Određena je koncentracija sledećih biohemijskih parametara: ukupnih proteina,
albumina, aktivnost alkalne fosfataze (ALP), aspartat aminotransferaze (AST), kreatin
proteina i aktivnosti ALP, koncentracije proteina i albumina, aktivnosti AST
i CK.
zglobovima nisu prisutne. Nalaz povećanog broja ćelija u ST bez inflamatornih promena
zahteva dodatna ispitivanja.
