same farme.
Stabilizovanju
zdravstvenog statusa svinja, pored već pomenutih mera, doprinose i programi vakcinacije. Promocija dobrog zdravlja svinja na komercijalnim farmama obuhvata primenu
sistema profilaktičkih mera, pored dobrog odabira rase, osmišljenosti veličine zapata i
načina primene biotehnoloških mera u procesu proizvodnje.
AB - On commercial pig farms, the health care of individual animals is
losing importance. In today’s production conditions, a large concentration of animals is
relatively present in a small area. This situation requires health care at the farm level.
It is well known that biosecurity measures in pig farming are necessary and aimed to
prevent introduction of pathogens on a commercial farm and also for preventing spreading the infection within the farm itself. Namely, the presence of different breeding
diseases of bacterial or viral etiology leads to a decrease in production. That requires
additional efforts of farm employees and the use of medicines, and this situation ultimately reduces the economic profit of the farm. It is recognized that key elements in implementing biosecurity are the willingness of farm employees to implement measures
that will provide high security with protection against the introduction and spread of
pathogens on the farm. Implementation of the measures requires knowledge of the pigs’
health status on the farm. One of the most common risk factors on the farm is purchasing boars, sows or piglets raised with unknown health status. The promotion of good
pig health on commercial farms involves usage of different prophylactic measures, in
addition to the good breeding selection, the sense of the size of plot, and the way how
biotechnological measures are applied in the pig production process.

AB - Harmful gases, such as ammonia (NH3) and carbon dioxide (CO2), affect both birds and workers involved in broiler
production. Five hundred and seventy-six one-day-old ROSS 308 broilers were reared on six types of litter (Treatment
1: chopped wheat straw; treatment 2: wood shavings; treatment 3: mixture of 1/3 chopped wheat straw, 1/3 wood
shavings and 1/3 peat; treatment 4: wheat straw pellets; treatment 5: softwood pellets and treatment 6: pellets of 1/3
wheat straw, 1/3 wood shavings and 1/3 peat). Using chamber emission of harmful gases, NH3 and CO2 were
measured weekly for each treatment. The results showed that the critical level of NH3 was reached for the first time
on day 28. By the end of the rearing period, NH3 concentrations were above the permitted value in all the treatments,
with no significant difference between treatments (P > 0.05). The carbon dioxide values did not exceed the critical
level during the fattening period. Litter types made no significant difference (P > 0.05) to carbon dioxide
concentrations. The type of litter significantly affected the final body weight. This paper describes the influence of
different materials and material combinations used as litter in broiler production. As birds are in constant contact
with the litter, careful selection, appropriate management and proper storage and use of poultry litter contributes to
improving in-house air quality and reducing air emissions from animal production facilities.

AB - Fourteen essential oils, including basil, black pepper, cassumunar ginger, cinnamon, lemon,
clove, fennel, lavender, myrtle, oregano, rosemary, curry plant, thyme and sage,
were screened for their antibacterial activity against important food-borne pathogens,
Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium. Essential oils have been examined
by gas chromatograph coupled to mass spectrometer (GC-MS). The disc diffusion method
was used as a screening test for antibacterial activity. Oregano and thyme essential
oils showed the greatest inhibition zones against both Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella
Typhimurium, while black pepper, lemon, curry plant and sage EOs expressed no
antibacterial activity against tested Salmonella serotypes. Subsequently, minimal inhibitory
concentration and minimal bactericidal concentration were determined by broth
microdilution method for all essential oils that showed any inhibition zones (disc diffusion
method). The essential oil that showed the highest antibacterial activity against all
Salmonella serotypes was oregano, expressing minimal inhibitory concentration values
between 0.04 and 0.23 μL/mL, and minimal bactericidal concentration values between
0.09 and 0.45 μL/mL, followed by cinnamon, clove, rosemary and thyme essential oils.
The results of this study confirm the antibacterial activity of some essential oils, as well
as their potential application as food preservatives.

was used as a screening test for antibacterial activity.
The results of this study confirm the antibacterial activity of some essential oils, as well
as their potential application as food preservatives.",

AB - Simple Summary Prediction of technological and sensory pork quality-during a pigs life or quickly after slaughter-is increasingly required by the pork industry in order to classify carcasses or primary cuts of carcasses for different production lines. Therefore, there is increasing demand for the development of accurate, reliable, time-efficient, non-invasive, real-time tools for predicting pork and carcass quality characteristics. Based on this, the aim of this study was to assess the potential use of various physiological stress biomarkers as indicators of carcass and meat quality traits in slaughter pigs subjected to the standard marketing conditions and to minimal stressful preslaughter handling. According to the results of this investigation, lactate dehydrogenase can be considered as a useful predictor of pork quality, while cortisol, alanine amino transferase, and albumin could be useful in prediction of carcass quality. Abstract This study assessed the potential use of various physiological stress biomarkers as indicators of carcass and meat quality traits in 240 pigs subjected to the standard marketing conditions and minimal stressful antemortem handling using Pearson correlations. The most important pork quality traits (pH and temperature, water holding capacity, and color) had limited correlations with stress metabolites (lactate, glucose), stress hormones (cortisol, adrenocorticotropic hormone), stress enzymes (creatine kinase, aspartate amino transferase, alanine amino transferase), electrolytes (sodium, chloride), and acute-phase proteins (haptoglobin, C-reactive protein, albumin), indicating poor reliability in predicting pork quality. Albumin level was moderately positively correlated with live weight, hot carcass weight, cold carcass weight, and back fat thickness. Alanine amino transferase level was moderately positively correlated with live weight, hot carcass weight, and cold carcass weight. Cortisol level was moderately positively correlated with live weight, hot carcass weight, cold carcass weight, and back fat thickness, and moderately negatively correlated with the lean carcass content. Increased lactate dehydrogenase level was moderately correlated with decreased drip and cooking loss. In conclusion, lactate dehydrogenase could help pork producers predict pork quality variation, while cortisol, alanine amino transferase, and albumin could be useful in prediction of carcass quality.

AB - This study assessed the effects of season on health, behaviour, physiological stress parameters, and carcass and meat quality in a total of 480 slaughter pigs. The following health indicators were recorded: pneumonia, pleurisy, milk spots, and pericarditis. Behaviour was monitored during unloading (slipping, falling, turning back, reluctance to move, panting, shivering) and lairaging (panting, shivering, huddling). Blood lactate and glucose concentrations were determined at exsanguination. Performance indices (live weight, daily weight gain), carcass (carcass weight, backfat and loin thickness, lean meat content, carcass lesion score), and meat quality (pH, temperature, drip, thawing and cooking losses, colour, marbling) traits were measured postmortem. Pigs slaughtered in winter had the highest live weight, carcass weight, loin thickness, and carcass lesion score, while the lowest live weight, carcass weight, and backfat thickness were recorded in pigs slaughtered in summer. The highest lactate and glucose concentrations were recorded in pigs slaughtered in summer. The highest prevalence of red, soft, and exudative meat was recorded in pigs slaughtered in winter. Pigs slaughtered in summer had the lowest pH, the highest thawing loss, L* value, b* value, and occurrence of pale, soft, and exudative meat. Pigs slaughtered in autumn had the lowest drip loss, cooking loss, L* value, b* value, and the greatest percentage of red, firm, and nonexudative meat. In conclusion, the summer and winter temperatures compromised health and welfare and reduced carcass and meat quality in slaughter pigs, indicating that protection against heat and cold stress is not yet effective.

AB - The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between clinical symptoms recorded during the antemortem inspection in the lairage and pathological lesions at postmortem inspection of slaughter pigs. If clinical symptoms were an accurate indicator of pathological lesions at postmortem inspection it could be possible to incorporate only those parameters in the health and welfare monitoring system. The study was conducted on 1033 pigs originated from 39 small-scale farms. During the antemortem inspection, pigs were clinically inspected for the presence of coughing, sneezing and laboured breathing. The plucks of slaughtered pigs from each farm were examined for pneumonia, pleurisy and liver milk spots. No relationship was found between clinical symptoms and pathological lesions using Spearman correlation analysis. According to receiver operating characteristic curves and the area under the curves, 'positive farms' for pathological lesions at the postmortem inspection could not be accurately detected by the clinical symptoms recorded during antemortem inspection. These results suggest that the recording of pathological lesions at postmortem inspection is more reliable and feasible method for pig health and welfare monitoring than the recording of clinical symptoms during the antemortem inspection. Therefore, incorporating of pathological lesions scoring as part of the routine postmortem veterinary inspection process could function as iceberg indicators of underlying problems affecting pig health and welfare at farm level.

AB - An intensive cattle breeding encompasses a whole range of procedures that should enable continuous production and optimal utilization of production capacities. In such conditions, newborn calves must adapt to a variety of environmental factors, including housing, care, and feeding conditions. Inappropriate rearing conditions favour the emergence of gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases, as the most common health problems for calves. The same factors, and especially the unbalanced diet, have a major impact on the health of dairy cows and the incidence of diseases such as ketosis, fatty liver syndrome, puerperal paresis, rumen acidosis, and laminitis. This review paper is based on monitoring results of the health of calves and adult cows on dairy farms in Serbia, from 2011 to 2019. Also, some procedures in nutrition that can prevent the occurrence of metabolic diseases of cows are discussed.

Also, some procedures in nutrition that can prevent the occurrence of metabolic diseases of cows are discussed.",

AB - The results of the research into the microbiological contamination of litter used by broiler chickens are presented. Litter samples were taken prior to the introduction of chicks (day 0) and in 7-day intervals until the end of the fattening period. The total numbers of aerobic mesophilic microorganisms, yeasts, moulds and Clostridium perfringens spores, and the presence of bacteria of the Salmonella genus were determined. The total microbial count in newly laid litter was 7 log10 CFU/g, which increased to 9 log10 CFU/g by the 4th week. However, at the end of the 5th week, it was at the same level as in newly laid litter. C. perfringens spores, presumably originating from chicks' faeces, were first detected on day 7. In the next 7 days their number increased, reaching 3-4 log10 CFU/g, and remained at approximately same levels until the end of the research. The initial mould contamination was 5-6 log10 CFU/g. However, from day 21 moulds were not isolated, but only yeasts of the Saccharomyces genus. It is supposed that these were deposited with chicks' faeces, due to their presence in complete broiler feed. No bacteria of the Salmonella genus were ever isolated from the litter. In conclusion, the total numbers of microorganisms in deep litter reach their peak in approximately a month, which is followed by their decrease. Deep litter is a favourable environment for probiotic yeast cultures. Added to feed intended for broilers, they can positively influence the microbial composition of litter, providing healthier environment to fattening broilers.

AB - Commercial feed intended for dogs and cats is an almost unrecognised source of human infection with various serovars of Salmonella enterica. However, people may catch the infection both via direct contact with contaminated pet feed and by contact with pets, which usually shed Salmonella without signs of infection. A relatively new trend of feeding dogs and cats with raw feed is considered to be a special risk owing to the fact that it usually contains foodborne pathogens, such as Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli and Campylobacter spp. Nonetheless, the epidemiological data do not support this idea. In the current review relevant data on the significance of pet feed in the outbreak of human salmonellosis are discussed and the recommendations for the prevention of the infection originating from these sources are suggested.

AB - The influence of certain anticoccidial drugs on oxidative stress in broiler chickens infected with Eimeria species was assessed. There were two untreated (uninfected and infected), and three groups infected and treated with anticoccidials. The first treated group (Ro) was given robenidine, the 2nd a herbal anticoccidial (Herb) and the 3rd the combination of robenidine and the herbal anticoccidial (Ro+Herb). All infected groups were on day 14 challenged with oral inoculation of oocysts. The activities of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione S-transferase (GST), and the concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) were estimated in blood taken on days 21 and 40. The oocyst numbers were calculated per gram, and chicken body weight and feed conversion ratio (FCR) measured. The activities of CAT, GST and the level of MDA were significantly lower (P<0.05), whilst the activity of SOD was higher in infected chickens treated with anticoccidials (P<0.05) in comparison to those untreated. The most prominent change in the parameters of oxidative stress was recorded in the Ro+Herb group. In chickens treated with anticoccidials body weight was significantly higher (P<0.05), and the FCR and the oocyst counts significantly lower (P<0.05) than in untreated chickens. Oocyst counts were lower in the Ro and Ro+Herb groups than in the Herb group. Our study demonstrated that both anticoccidial substances exerted antioxidant and anticoccidial effects.

AB - Although Clostridium tertium is supposed to be a foodborne pathogen, the data on its detection in foodstuff s is scarce, and there are no reports on its isolation from feed. In this communication paper, the isolation of C. tertium from a sample of soya semolina is described. C. tertium may be importantin diff erential diagnosis, when it is to be distinguished from Clostridium perfringens. It is a unique species due to the lack of key characteristics of the genus it belongs to because it grows in the presence of oxygen and does not produce toxins. It has been well-documented as a human pathogen, although its mechanisms of pathogenicity are still unknown. According to sporadic reports in veterinary medicine, it has been identifi ed as a rare causative agent of infections in cattle, pigs, birds and marine mammals.
njegove virulencije i danas nepoznati. Na osnovu sporadičnih izveštaja u
veterinarskoj medicini, identifi kovan je retko kao uzročnik infekcija goveda, svinja, ptica i morskih sisara.

AB - In this article we presented body score condition of sows and
thin sow syndrome. In modern pig farming more and more attention is paid to body
condition score. On most commercial farms feeding of gilts and sows is based on
body condition. The goal is that sow does not gain or lose too much of a body
weight between farrowing and insemination. Maintenance of body weight
(condition) of sows within the optimum value (3 points in the time of farrowing
and 2.5 during mating) over their lifetime can result in optimal reproductive results.
In contrast, inadequate control of condition of the sow may lead to difficulty in
farrowing and occurrence of health problems. The syndrome of thin sows is a
disease of complex etiology. In 75% of cases, the main causes are qualitative and
quantitative malnutrition, also unfavorable housing conditions for sows. Less
frequently, the syndrome can be caused by presence of endoparasite
Hyostrongylusrubidus. In the presenting article during a year period, the
occurrence of weight loss in sows during lactation at one commercial farm was
observed. The health status of lactating sows and piglets were also registered. The
loss of body weight was mostly detected in sows in the second lactation.
Corrections in the feeding technology and better conditions for sows during
lactation period are crucial for managing the thin sow problem on the commercial
farm.

dovesti do nastanka ulkusa.

AB - In intensive rearing conditions, dairy cows are exposed to many factors that can cause
health disorders and significant economic loses. Today, claw diseases are the main problem
in high-milk cow's herd, along with metabolic diseases, mastitis and reproduction disorders.
Claw diseases can have direct effects on reproductive parameters. The aim of our research
was to determine the frequency of certain diseases of the locomotor apparatus of dairy cows
on farms with tie stall system. In the period of two years, a total of 37,893 cows were
examined, wherein the following has been found: Laminitis in 34,217 cows (90.30%),
Dermatitis interdigitalis in 25,876 cows (68.29%), Dermatitis digitalis in 11,817 cows
(31.18%), Rusterholz ulcer in 8,272 cows (21.83%), Fibroma in 3063 cows (8.08%), and
Panaritium in 618 cows (1.63%). The results show that laminitis dominate in the herds.
Considering the etiology of diseases determined at the farms it is primarily to focus on
preventing the formation of metabolic disorders and adequate nutrition of the animals, and
then on the improvement of housing conditions and the regular implementation of measures
to prevent the spread of infectious claw diseases.

AB - This study assessed the effects of RYR1 mutation on the health, welfare, and carcass and meat quality in slaughter pigs. Any signs of pneumonia, pleurisy, pericarditis, and liver milk spots were recorded as present or absent. At exsanguination, blood samples were collected and RYR1 genotype, blood lactate and glucose concentrations were determined. The following carcass quality traits were measured: live, hot and cold carcass weights, backfat thickness, loin muscle thickness, lean meat content and skin lesion score. pH and temperature of M. longissimus dorsi and M. semimembranosus were measured 45 minutes postmortem. Nn pigs were more affected by pneumonia, had higher blood lactate and glucose concentrations and more developed rigor mortis than NN pigs. NN pigs had lower daily weight gain, produced lighter carcasses, more fat and less meat than Nn pigs. Meat obtained from Nn pigs was of a lower quality class than meat obtained from NN pigs, as shown by the lower pH and higher temperatures measured 45 minutes post mortem in both muscles and higher prevalence of pale, soft and exudative meat. In conclusion, the presence of a mutant n allele in pigs positively affected carcass quality traits, but had a deleterious effect on health, welfare and meat quality.

AB - The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of pathological lesions in pigs from small-scale farms and to determine associations between pathological lesions and hematological parameters, and carcass and meat quality in slaughtered pigs. The study was conducted on 625 pigs (similar to 115 kg) originating from 20 small-scale farms. Any signs of pneumonia, pleurisy, pericarditis, and liver milk spots were recorded as present or absent. Complete blood count was investigated. The following carcass quality parameters were measured: live, hot and cold carcass weights, cooling loss, dressing percentage, backfat thickness, and meatiness. Meat pH and temperature were measured 45 min postmortem. Of the 625 examined pigs, 41.8% had pneumonia, 23.5% pleurisy, 2.7% pericarditis, and 29.9% liver milk spots. The presence of pathological lesions in slaughtered pigs adversely affected hematological parameters, reduced live, hot and cold carcass weights, and meatiness and had deleterious effects on meat quality (higher pH(45min) and higher prevalence of dark, firm and dry meat). In conclusion, this study showed a high prevalence of pathological lesions in slaughtered pigs, indicating serious health problems in smallholder pig production systems. The presence of single and, especially, multiple pathological lesions in slaughtered pigs negatively affected hematological parameters, and carcass and meat quality.

AB - Poor animal welfare is a growing issue of concern all over the world. During pre-slaughter phases, some activities, if poorly performed, lead to stress reactions in animals. Animals responses to a great extent depend on species, breed, sex and age of animal. Food and water deprivation, exposure to unfavourable environmental conditions, improper handling and social mixing are just some indicators of compromised animal well-being. All these detrimental activities lead to the development of carcass and meat quality defects. Among them, important defects are untimely death of animals, body weight loss, carcass damage, and the two major meat quality defects, i.e. pale, soft, exudative (PSE) and dark, firm, dry (DFD) meats. Consumer dissatisfaction results, and with economic and financial losses, producers are placed in a disadvantageous position.

AB - Broiler meat quality depends on the interaction of several factors, including genotype, slaughter age/body weight, pre-slaughter handling, and slaughter method. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of slaughter weight on meat yield and quality of broilers. The material consisted of 42 broilers, classified into three groups: lighter (3000 g). The following meat yield parameters were measured: cold carcass weight, breast weight before and after deboning, breast skin and bone weights, thigh weight before and after deboning, thigh skin and bone weights, drumstick weight before and after deboning, and drumstick skin and bone weights. Meat pH (M. pectoralis major) and instrumental colour (breast and drumstick) were measured 24 h post-mortem. Meat quality classes (pale, soft and exudative and normal meat) were determined based on breast muscle L* value. Heavier broilers had higher (P<0.05) cold carcass weight, breast, thigh and drumstick weights both before and after deboning compared to medium and lighter broilers. In contrast, meat quality traits were not significantly (P>0.05) affected by slaughter weight. In conclusion, production of heavy broilers had a beneficial effect on meat quantity, while the effect of slaughter weight on meat quality was negligible.
Ispitivani su sledeći pokazatelji prinosa mesa: masa hladnog trupa, masa grudi pre i posle otkoštavanja, masa kože i kostiju grudi, masa karabataka pre i posle otkoštavanja, masa kože i kostiju karabataka, masa bataka pre i posle otkoštavanja i masa kože i kostiju bataka.

This study assessed the effect of farming system, feeding system, floor type, housing density and gender on the occurrence of pathological lesions in slaughtered pigs. Materials and Methods. The study was conducted on 400 pigs from four farms with different housing conditions. The plucks of 100 slaughtered pigs from each farm were examined for pneumonia, pleurisy, pericarditis and milk spots. Results and Conclusions. Pigs housed in a large-scale indoor farm had the lowest incidence of pneumonia. The highest occurrence of pneumonia was recorded in pigs fattened in a small-scale farm in pens with outdoor access. Pigs reared on farms in pens with outdoor access had the highest incidence of milk spots. Pigs from farms using pellet feeding systems had higher incidences of pneumonia, pleurisy and milk spots than those from a farm using a liquid feeding system. A rearing system comprising concrete floors without bedding resulted in the highest incidence of pneumonia in pigs. Pigs from a farm using a concrete floor with bedding had the highest occurrence of milk spots. The lowest incidence of milk spots was recorded in pigs from farms using fully-slatted floors. Compared to low housing density, high housing density resulted in higher incidences of pneumonia, pericarditis and milk spots in pigs. A higher prevalence of lung lesions was detected in barrows than in gilts. This study showed the most significant risk factors for the occurrence of pathological lesions in slaughtered pigs are pens with outdoor access, pellet feeding system, concrete floor, high housing density and gender.
Materijal i metode. Rezultati i zaključak.

abstract = "Introduction. This study showed the most significant risk factors for the occurrence of pathological lesions in slaughtered pigs are pens with outdoor access, pellet feeding system, concrete floor, high housing density and gender., Uvod. Materijal i metode. Rezultati i zaključak.
