AB - Poljoprivredna proizvodnja u Republici Srbiji predstavlja značajnu granu privrede.
preko 40 ovaca i ostavlja svoje brojne potomke. Iz tog razloga, prilikom izrade selekcijskih
programa za određenu rasu, posebnu pažnju treba posvetiti priplodnim ovnovima
i njihovim proizvodnim i reproduktivnim karakteristikama. Pored ostalih selekcijskih
kriterijuma, kliničkim pregledom genitalnih organa i morfometrijskom analizom testisa
celu populaciju lipske ovce.
AB - The agriculture represents an important branch of economy in the Republic of
Serbia. Animal production is mainly based on traditional small family housholds. Sheep
production is an important branch of agriculture in the Republic of Serbia, where a total
of 1.7 million sheep are reared in over 155.000 households, mainly under semiextensive
menagement. The majority of sheep are autochthonous breeds and local types adapted
to the local environment. Because of the endangered status of the autochthonous sheep
breeds, conservation and improvement of these precious populations is needed, as they
have a major potential in the sustainable agricultural production. The main focus should be given to the selection of breeding rams, as they have the biggest impact on the
population quality. One high quality breeding ram can mate over 40 ewes over the mating
seasone and leave offspring. Taking this in mind, when the selection criterias are
defined for a breed, a special attention should be given to the ram, to its productive and
reproductive traits. Amongother selection criteria, the clinical assessment of the genital
tract with a special attention on scrotal circumference could result in better health and
quality of the population. It is well known that rams with bigger scrotal circumference
(bigger testicles) can have a better reproductive capacity and can serve more ewes in
the mating season, what makes a stronger impact of rams on the population quality. In
countries with specialized sheep production these characteristics are inclusded into the
selection measures and breeding rams older than 1.5 years with healthy genitals should
have a scrotal circumference of minimum 33 cm, and the ideal score means that the
ram should have is≥ 35 cm, and the elite ones ≥ 38 cm. The Lipe sheep is a local autochthonous
breed of the Republic of Serbia, which has a breeding population size of 800
animals in 2019. According to the national legislation that time it had a status of a critically
endangered breedwith. As a result of hogher subsidies for the last few years, the
population size rises and in 2021 reached 2000 breeding animals which means it got a
status of potentially endangered breed. Assessment of the genital tract ofbreeding rams
of the Lipe sheep showed good health of the genitalia, with an average scrotal circumference
of 38.35cm, but with evidence of big variations. The average scrotal circumference
of 38.35cm means an excellent result on a population level. Eventhough the overall
scrotal circumference is excellent on the population level, because of the fact that most
of the herds are small (up to 20 breeding animals) with only one breeding ram, the animals
with insufficient values of scrotal circumference (≥ 33) could have negative results
not only at the herd level, but also at the population level of the endangered Lipe
sheep. With the aim to improve and save the endangered autochthonous rare breed and
ensure a high quality elite breeding rams in each flock, it is necessary to update the selective
measures with new criteria regarding the assessment of the male genital tract.

AB - This research aimed for the first time to identify the essential welfare
problems on 46 goat dairy farms in Vojvodina, based on the goat AWIN
welfare protocol. The study showed that space allowance per goat was 1.55,
1.86 and 2.50 m2/goat (large, medium, small-sized farms, respectively). Most
farms possessed the soil floor and straw as a flooring material. The small
and medium farms more allowed access to the outdoor area. Contrary,
large-sized farms mostly kept goats in fully housed systems with reduced
opportunities for the goats to express their natural behavior. Management
procedures were significantly different (p < 0.05) between the investigated
farms. Differences were mainly in bedding, feeding and culling strategies.
Low productivity was the main cause of culling in all farm types. Small-sized
farms carried out more often disbudding (42.9%) in comparison with medium
(21.4%) and large-sized ones (14.3%). Group level observation showed
that the main areas of concern were associated with hair coat condition and
kneeling at the feeding rack (p < 0.05). Inadequate BCS, udder asymmetry
and claw overgrowth were frequently recorded. The prevalence of thin and
fat goats was highest in large-sized farms All farm size categories and
management systems showed certain welfare weaknesses. Thus, the findings
highlighted the need for higher implementation of animal welfare
principles and improvement of management techniques to meet the welfare
requirements of dairy goats.

AB - Knowledge of the measurement uncertainty of test results is fundamentally important for laboratories, their customers and all parties using and interpreting these results. In conformity assessment, a measurement result is used to decide if an item of interest conforms to a specified requirement. Because of measurement uncertainty, there is always the risk of incorrectly deciding whether or not an item conforms to a specified requirement based on the measured value of a property of the item. Conformity assessment can be quite challenging when the entity measured is so close to the tolerance limits of the specification that its uncertainty, however estimated, critically affects decision-making. In such cases, different decision rules can be used to make statements of conformity. The aim of this paper is to provide a survey of methods for the evaluation of measurement uncertainty in testing, as well as to stress the need for appropriate estimation of measurement uncertainty. This paper also aims to assist testing laboratories in understanding the different decision rules used in conformity assessment and level of risk (such as false accept and false reject) associated with the decision rule employed.

AB - Background/Aim. Organophosphate pesticides (OPs) are used extensively worldwide in agriculture and forestry, and their application represents a major health problem for humans and animals. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of the adaptation of an organism to the prolonged administration of a low dose of diazinon. Methods. The study was conducted on a total of 60 male Wistar rats. The first 30 rats were divided into four equal diazinon groups (n = 6) and the control one (corn oil). Diazinon was orally administered once at doses: 200, 400, 600, 800 mg/kg (one dose – one group). The concentration of glucose, the activity of α-amylase and the relative activity of LDH1-LDH5 isoenzymes in the blood were measured 24 hours after the application. The remaining 30 rats were divided into two equal diazinon groups (n = 10) and the control one (corn oil). The first group was treated during 7 days, and the second during 14 days with 55 mg/kg of diazinon (1/10 of previously determined LD50 value). The histopathology of the pancreas and the liver, as well as the relative activities of LDH isoenzymes in the blood, were determined after the completion of both time periods. Results. Single administration of increasing doses of diazinon resulted in a significant increase in the concentrations of glucose, activity of α-amylase and LDH isoenzymes. Subacute application of a low diazinon dose induced histopathological changes in the pancreas manifested by acinar cell necrosis, and in the liver in the form of portal hepatitis and multifocal necrosis. The cumulative doses resulted in statistically significantly lower activities of LDH isoenzymes compared with the single administration of these doses, indicating a lower degree of the cells damage after the subacute diazinon administration. Conclusion. Subacute administration of a low dose of diazinon leads to a different adaptation degree of organs and organ systems to toxic effects caused by this organophosphate.

AB - Yugoslavian Shepherd Dog-Sharplanina (YSD) is a livestock guard dog from the Western Balkans present in this region over a long time, but recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale as a distinct breed as late as 1957. However, the information regarding the origin and the size of the breed's foundation stock is still lacking. In order to contribute towards better understanding of the genetic make-up of the YSD and its foundation stock, we re-analyzed previously generated genetic profiles of 94 registered YSD dogs assessed with nine nuclear microsatellites. Studied individuals comprised 90 unrelated dogs and two pairs of full-sibs, sampled at four sampling sites: Three dog shows and at a military training centre for dogs in Serbia. We supported earlier findings on high levels of genetic diversity in YSD (HE=0.728±0.027) and lack of inbreeding, and revealed substructure of the breed because we found two distinct gene pools in the Bayesian clustering analysis, indicated also by the excess of homozygotes (i.e., Wahlund effect) and outcomes of other analyses: Linkage disequilibrium tests, Neighbour-Joining tree, principal coordinates and two-dimensional scaling analyses. The two gene pools were almost equally represented at each sampling site. One gene pool was composed of individuals with high genetic integrity, while the other gene pool was characterized with admixed ancestry, developed possibly via hybridization with native breeding stock outside the registry system, other breeds, such as the Caucasian Shepherd, and/or individuals admixed with wolves. Thus, we demonstrate rather complex and diverse ancestry implying a genetically heterogeneous foundation stock of the YSD.

AB - The present work aimed to study the goat farms concerning different hygiene-sanitary and health management practice. Also, bulk tank milk of Alpine breed goats was used to investigate changes in the composition of milk during lactation on six farms in Vojvodina Region. The results showed that although 96.67% of farmers were familiar with mastitis, approximately 56.67% of farmers reported a lack of knowledge about subclinical mastitis and therefore not intensely monitoring udder health during the lactation period. Somatic cell count (SCC) and total bacteria count (TBC) were the most variable traits in our research and lactation average SCC between investigated farms showed a significant difference (P < 0.01) (a range from 1088×10³/ml to 3129×10³/ml). At the same time, TBC was found in a wider range, from 66×10³/ml to 3508×10³/ml. Further-more, SCC and TBC often did not meet the recommended quality level. Therefore, during the entire lactation period, 63% of the milk samples contained above 1.5 million SCC/ml and 37% of the samples were contained TBC above 1.5 million CFU/ ml. Results also confirmed considerable seasonal variations of goat milk composition and the milk fat was the component that most varied (cv: 33.16%). It was observed that organic in comparison to conventional milk chemical composition, was signifi-cantly different, especially in terms of protein content (P < 0.0001). In conclusion, goat dairy production could be of considerable importance in Vojvodina but dairy goat sector requires a more systemic approach, better hygiene milking conditions and implemented prevention and control programmes during the milking routine.

AB - Meat quality characteristics (m. longissimus dorsi) were evaluated in lambs of three types of
autochthonous Zackel sheep: Sjenica sheep, Lipe sheep and Vlashko Vitoroga sheep, reared
in traditional habitats in a sustainable management system. For the evaluation of sensory
characteristics of lamb meat, quantitative descriptive analysis was performed, based on
structural intensity scale of seven points (ISO 6564:1985). All Zackel meat samples had an
overall acceptability, the most favorable being in Sjenica sheep, with detected differences
between Sjenica and Vlashko Vitoroga sheep (p<0.05). Sustainable consumers appreciate
sensory characteristics of lamb meat from agroecological farming system and prefer lamb
meat as local food.

AB - After an animal is harvested for meat, the skeletal muscle initiates a myriad of biochemical pathways in an attempt to maintain energy homeostasis. Anaerobic glycolysis is responsible for the generation of ATP to help meet energy demand and for the decrease in pH by generating H+. Both the rate and the extent of the post-mortem pH decline are paramount in the context of the development of pork quality attributes, such as color, water holding capacity, and texture. Pale, soft and exudative meat and dark, firm, and dry meat are two of the major quality defects facing the pork meat industry. Because glycolysis has the potential to affect meat quality attributes either positively or negatively, evaluating its regulation post-mortem is fundamental to understanding meat quality. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate factors that affect mechanism of glycolysis. Special consideration will be given to meat quality attributes and development of pork quality defects.

AB - Background. Rodent pests are natural reservoirs and vectors of a vast array of human and animal diseases caused by bacteria, rickettsia, viruses, protozoans, fungi and some parasites. The most important risk factor for human infection with Trichinella is the rearing of pigs on small farms and by rural households, if rodent pest control is not conducted regularly. Rodent pests cause economic losses by consuming, contaminating and/or damaging foods intended for human or animal consumption. Scope and Approach. The aim of this work is to point out the epidemiological and epizootiological importance of regular rodent control, and the importance of integrated use of all measures in deratization, as well as mistakes which can be made in implementing this procedure. Key Findings and Conclusions. The control of populations of pest synanthropic and hemisynanthropic rodents is a very complex and delicate task to carry out. Given all characteristics of the majority of rodent pest species, e.g. high reproductive potential, extraordinary adaptation to life in a variety of habitats and ability to develop resistance to anticoagulant rodenticides, the issue of controlling the number of rodent pests is considerably more problematic than it might seem at first glance. Therefore, appropriate scientific and professional knowledge is necessary to accomplish effective rodent control, which if done improperly, can have far-reaching negative consequences for human populations, non-target species and workers performing the task.
Cilj i pristup. Ključni nalazi i zaključak. Suzbijanje i kontrola brojnosti populacija štetnih sinantropnih i hemisinantropnih glodara predstavlja izuzetno složen i delikatan zadatak.

AB - The present study was conducted in 90 sheep and goats flocks from the territory of Vojvodina in the two years period of March 2016 to October 2017, during the grazing season. Tick infestation was deteected in 53.14% of examined animals. The most dominant was Ixodes ricinus (43.91%), followed by Dermacentor marginatus (31.91%), Rhipicephalus bursa (15.22%), R.sanguineus (8.72%), Hyalomma savignyi (3.72%),, Haemaphysalis punctata (3.21%) and D.pictus (2.72%) . The sex ratio of detected tick species showed a higher number of females in four species (I.ricinus, H.punctata, R.sanguineus and D.marginatus), while higher number of males were detected in two species (R.bursa and Hy.savignyi), and an equal number of ticks of the D.pictus. The population dynamics of recorded tick species showed two annual maxima, in spring (AprilMay) and in autumn (September-October). The considerable interchange between spring and autumn tick populations can be attributed mainly to environmental conditions.

AB - This study was conducted to evaluate the nutritional quality of two types of cheese prepared from bovine whey: Urda and Ricotta. Cheeses were examined for chemical parameters and their amino acids profile was determined. The results revealed that the chemical composition of the observed whey cheeses was highly significantly different (p lt 0.01) from each other. The amounts of dry matter, fat, protein, lactose, ash and salt were higher in Ricotta compared with Urda cheese samples. On the other hand, Urda contained more moisture, fat on a dry matter basis and moisture on a fat-free basis (79.59%, 27.50%, 84.27% versus 69.82%, 21.02%, 74.56%, respectively). Especially higher yield, salt in moisture content and energy values were observed in Ricotta cheese (5.93%, 3.12%, 145.99Kcal/100g versus 4.39%, 2.40%, 108.97Kcal/100g; Ricotta and Urda, respectively). Whey cheeses are a particularly good source of amino acids containing approximately-Ricotta: Leucine (1.60g/100g), lysine (1.17g/100g), phenylalanine (0.78g/100g) and followed by threonine (0.77g/100g), while Urda contained leucine (0.80g/100g), lysine (0.45g/100g), threonine (0.68g/100g) and phenylalanine (0.31g/100g). Both cheese varieties contained glutamic and aspartic acid as the predominant non-essential amino acids (Ricotta: 3.91g/100g and 1.68g/100g versus Urda: 1.65g/100g and 0.80g/100g, respectively). Generally, from a nutritional point of view, the investigated whey cheeses could be considered as cheeses with low salt and fat content, as well as cheeses particularly abundant in branched chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine and valine). These results also emphasize their advantages as products that present a cost-effective way of dealing with whey as waste material.

AB - The aim of this study was to emphasize the importance of conservation of the Lipe sheep, as a local endangered type of Zackel breed, and to perform a comprehensive phenotypic characterization in order to ensure a better use and preservation of this genetic resource. In addition, we compared the results of a detailed morphometric characterization of the modern Lipe sheep carried out in the present study with the morphometric parameters of the native form of this breed described in 1935. The comparative analysis revealed the development dynamics of the local Lipe sheep in the traditional habitat, over a period of nearly one century. Throughout this period, different factors affecting Lipe sheep management, such as biogeografic, agro-economic, sociocultural and others, led to significant population erosion, and to the current status of the Lipe sheep as an endangered genetic resource. Although a slight increase has been registered in some body measurements, the major body indexes of the Lipe sheep, such as body format, body compactness, body massiveness, body proportion, pelvic, and head index, remained without significant fluctuations over the last century (p>0.05). Body length of the modern type still exceeds the height at withers, which was also recorded in the native Lipe sheep nearly 100 years ago. A prominent sexual dimorphism is still evident. Therefore, our comparative analysis showed no significant differences between the native and modern form of Lipe sheep in their body format and growth potential. The slight increases in absolute body measurements of the modern Lipe type we recorded could be linked to better housing conditions and improved quality of feed, without application of strategic selection measures over the last 100 years. The importance of conservation of this ovine resource is less economical, but mostly cultural, historical and heritage oriented, and still essential for the survival of the breed.

AB - Sheep breeding represents one of the most perspective branches of the livestock production in
Serbia. The specific climate and the unic habitat include a high variability of flora and fauna
of grasslands, pastures and meadows throughout the country, ensuring high biodiversity of the
ecosystem. Autochthonous breeds are most adapted to the local environment. The present
study was performed on 143 autochthonous sheep breed flocks in Serbia during the grazing
season from March to October 2016 and 2017, and included a total of 1069 adult sheep. Tick
infection was detected in all tested flocks, affecting 49.02% of examined sheep. The most
dominant was Ixodes ricinus (44.71%), followed by Dermacentor marginatus (30.40%),
Rhipicephalus bursa (15.15%), Ripicephalus sanguineus (8.70%), Hyalomma savignyi
(3.18%), Haemaphysalis punctata (2.81%) and Dermacentor recticulatus (2.62%). In tested
years the recorded tick infections showed two peaks, in spring (April-May) and in autumn
(September-October). The considerable difference between detected spring and autumn tick
populations can be attributed mainly to climatic and environmental conditions of the
ecosystem where ticks and sheep cohabitat.

AB - The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including 17 Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs), represents the new global objectives that succeed the
Millennium Development Goals. The Agenda emphasizes the link between food,
livelihoods and the management of natural resources. The primary objective of this
strategy is the improvement of the environment and, consequently, the improvement of
public health and quality of life. Harmful effects of ecosystem changes on human health
through pollution and loss of natural areas, combined with lifestyle changes, lead to public
health problems like obesity, diabetes, cancer, diseases of the cardiovascular system and
nervous system. Animal health management and food security control play an important
role in The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It's purpose is to support the
improvement of public health and sustainable development of regions. The value of
Sjenica Zackel sheep for rural development has been evaluated considering the new global
objectives and their importance for sustainable development. Sjenica Pester plateau,
characterized by specific floristic composition of pasture, traditionally is related to high
quality products, such are lamb meet and Sjenica cheese. The obtained results have shown
that the genetic constitution of Sjenica type of Zackel sheep, it's evolutionary adaptation to
the habitat, the method of breeding and the specific floristically composition favorably
affect the high-quality animal products.
The Sjenica lamb meat favorable fatty acid profile, important for human health and
especially for infant and children nutrition, raises the interest for sustainable production
and rural development at Sjenica Pester plateau. The obtained results are in accordance
with the new global objectives.

AB - Goat meat consumed in all parts of the world because of its
distinctive taste and desired chemical composition. This meat is rich in protein,
vitamins and minerals; it contains very little fat, especially cholesterol and is
healthier alternative compared to other types of red meat. The quality of the meat
of goats is influenced by breed, gender, productivity and adaptability to stress,
environment, management, nutrition, body weight at slaughter and health status as
well as the slaughter and procedures with the body after slaughter. In addition,
quality also affected by parasitic, bacterial and viral etiology contaminants, which
may condition that the meat of these animals is unusable for human consumption
and therefore should take care of them. In muscle and edible internal organs of
small ruminants, we found adult and developmental forms of the parasite. In the
muscles and organs of the most common encountered cyst of zoonotic protozoa
Toxoplasma gondii. In the liver, we found Fasciola hepatica and Dicrocelium
dendriticum. In the brain occurred Coenuris cerebralis (cyst form of Multiceps
multiceps) Hydatid cysts (cyst stage of Echinococcus granulosus) we encountered
by the liver, lungs, kidneys, muscles and other internal organs. Cysticercosis
caused by Taenia ovis and T.hydatigena luck of the liver, omentum and muscle.
Their presence leads to a change in the organoleptic characteristics of the
food and hygiene failure causing elimination of food from the market and therefore
leads to major economic losses.

AB - Water for watering of animals should be of the same quality as drinking water
for human consumption. Farm animals' needs for water depend on many factors e.g. air
temperature and humidity, species characteristics, age and production level, physical
activity and meal composition. Breeders sometimes are not aware of needs of their animals
for water, especially in young categories. This paper presents the results of research carried
out in Serbia and Slovenia, with the aim to examine management practices at small-scale
farms of ruminants in rural areas. Data regarding watering practices were collected from
questionnaires answered by owners of cattle farms (60 from Serbia and 293 from Slovenia)
and small ruminant farms (225 in Slovenia). According to the results, continuous access to
drinking water have calves from the first day of life at 27% of the surveyed farms in Serbia
and 13% in Slovenia. At the farms of small ruminants, 57% use automatic drinkers and
water from public water supply and 23% of animals are on the pasture and drink water
from natural sources. In both countries, some owners apply the procedures in watering
which comply with the principles of animal welfare. It is useful to provide more additional
information to breeders about importance of water for health and productivity of their
animals.

AB - Density functional method with continuum solvation model is used for the calculation of the partition coefficient log KOW and the determination of lipophilicity of 22 most frequently used organophosphate type pesticides. Excellent agreement with experimental data is obtained using three different density functional approximations (one local, one general gradient and one hybrid), and our results highlight DFT as a reliable and trustworthy method for the calculation of lipophilicity for this important class of molecules. Furthermore, the calculated lipophilicity results are associated with the experimentally determined LD50 and LC50 values, showing that the most toxic pesticides are those with transient characteristics (medium lipophilicity), although this conclusion must be taken with a caution, due to the many factors influencing the ingestion and action of a certain substance in the body besides lipophilicity.

AB - The aim of this study was to determine and evaluate the basic haematological parameters in conditions of natural infection of sheep with Strongyloides papillosus, as well as after the administration of antihelminthic albendazole (ABZ). Based on the intensity of infection with S. papillosus the sheep were divided into three groups: mild, moderate and high, and after that the sheep received a single dose of ABZ of 5mg/kg per body weight, per orally. Sampling of faeces and blood for parasitological and haematological assaying respectively, was performed on the 0 and the 21st day after the treatment with ABZ. The presence of parasitic infection with S. papillosus leads to a decrease of erythrocyte count, while the lowest values were established in the group with the highest intensity of parasitic infection (p ˂ 0.001). After treatment with ABZ the decrease of erythrocyte count was more prominent, which was, based on comparison with control groups C1 and C2, unequivocally established to be the consequence of treatment with ABZ. Detected values of haematocrit and erythrocyte indices indicated the presence of parasitic infection: the lowest values were established in the group with the highest intensity of parasitic infection. After treatment with ABZ haematocrit levels in control group C2 were statistically significantly lower compared to the control group C1 (p ˂ 0.001). In the presence of parasitic infection, the neutrophil and eosinophil counts increased almost linearly up to the value of 44.24±2.50% and 13.29±0.61% respectively, in the group of sheep with the highest intensity of parasitic infection (p ˂ 0.001; compared to control group C1). After treatment with ABZ the decrease of the number of these white blood cells is statistically significant (p ˂ 0.001). Bearing in mind our previous research and the connection of disbalanced redox equilibrium after the treatment with ABZ with changes, it is necessary to include antioxidative substances in the anti-parasitic treatment protocols.

After treatment with ABZ the decrease of the number of these white blood cells is statistically significant (p ˂ 0.001). Bearing in mind our previous research and the connection of disbalanced redox equilibrium after the treatment with ABZ with changes, it is necessary to include antioxidative substances in the anti-parasitic treatment protocols., Cilj ovog istraživanja bio je da se utvrde i procene osnovni hematološki parametri u uslovima prirodne infekcije ovaca sa Strongyloides papillosus, kao i nakon primene antihelmintika albendazola (ABZ).

AB - Lameness is a multi-factorial condition that depends on managerial as well as genetic variables, but often is related to legs and feet condition of the animals. The aim of the study was to give an overview of legs and claws condition and the presence of lameness in sows at one industrial farm. Total 130 animals (90 dry i.e. pregnant and 40 lactating sows) were observed. The occurrence of leg joints swellings, than claws condition (toes length, dew claw condition, cracked wall) and lameness (in animals in group boxes) were visually recorded and then classified according to the appropriate protocols. Findings proved the occurrence of one or more of examined conditions in 40% of pregnant sows and in 45% sows in lactation. In more than 20% of pregnant sows lameness was presented. There was statistically significant positive correlation between the occurrence of lameness and leg swellings and between lameness and claw condition in pregnant sows (in both cases p<0.0001). The results show that lameness is a significant problem in the studied farm. In general, more attention should be given to monitoring of sows' physical condition and behaviour, to minimize the occurrence of welfare problems and to reduce production losses.

AB - Diazinon (DZN) is an organophosphate insecticide which exerts its effect through the inhibition of acetyl cholinesterase enzyme (AChE). In this work, we studied the development of tolerance to subchronic p.o. administration of DZN in rats, under both in vivo and in vitro conditions. A group of 20 rats (2 groups, n = 10) was administered p.o. the 1/10 of established LD50 DZN (namely 55.87 mg/kg bw) for 28 days. On the 14th and 28th day of study with isolated diaphragm and ileum, we examined the downregulation of nicotinic and muscarinic receptor function through Electrical Field Stimulation (EFS). Maximum contractility of the diaphragm was recorded on the 14th day of the study (25% higher compared to the non-treated rats), while on the 28th day the contractions almost did not differ from the values found in non-treated rats. EFS of isolated ileum on the 14th day of study caused significantly higher contractions compared to the non treated rats, but after 28 days, ileum contractions decreased approximately to the level of contractions in non-treated rats. On the 14th study day, we also recorded increased amplitude of spontaneous ileum contractions, compared to non-treated rats. The application of increasing ACh concentrations caused dose-dependent ileum contractions, without statistically significant differences of median effective concentration (EC50) values in non-treated and treated rats. Tolerance to subchronic DZN administration develops due to various adaptation mechanisms, including the most important one downregulation of nicotinic and muscarinic receptor function.

AB - Eastern Serbia region, especially Homolje territory is an important natural resource of a great potential for organic sheep production. Its long tradition of sheep breeding and the quality of lamb meat and dairy products has become well-known. Svrljig type of Zackel sheep is traditionally reared in the hilly - mountain region of Eastern Serbia. It is well adapted to environmental conditions and sustainable breeding systems. Bearing in mind that autochthonous breeds are preferable for organic production due to the fact that they are well adapted to habitat and due to their genetic tolerance to diseases, the autochthonous Svrljig sheep population reared in Homolje territory was chosen for this research. Examination of health status, body score condition, reproductive traits in a population of 342 ewes and growth traits of 412 lambs reared in sustainable livestock farming was performed. Reproductive and lamb growth traits, litter size at weaning (LSW), total litter weight at birth (TLWB), total litter weight at one-month (1TLMW) and total litter weight at weaning (TLWW) were analyzed. Results of health status, basic ewe reproductive traits and lamb growth performance show that autochthonous Svrljig type of Zackel sheep has robust constitution and potential to be the breed of choice for organic production in the hilly - mountain region of Eastern Serbia
