AB - This study assessed the influence of transport conditions on welfare indicators of slaughter
pigs with different health status and RYR-1 genotype. The group of pigs, predominantly consisting of
Nn (56.67%) and subclinically diseased (60.00%) individuals, that were exposed to short transportation (<30 min) at high loading density (~235 kg/m2
) had the highest slipping (p < 0.0001), falling
(p = 0.0009), turning back (p < 0.0001), reluctance to move (p < 0.0001), panting (p < 0.0001) and
shivering (p < 0.0001) frequencies at unloading. Subclinically diseased Nn pigs subjected to short
transportation (<30 min) and high loading density (~235 kg/m2
) had the highest lactate (p < 0.0001
and p < 0.0001), glucose (p = 0.0450 and p = 0.0002), CK (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.0010), LDH (p < 0.0001
and p = 0.0484), AST (p = 0.0208 and p = 0.0170), ALT (p = 0.0500 and p = 0.00081), ceruloplasmin
(p = 0.0334 and p < 0.0001) and MDA (p = 0.0048 and p < 0.0001) concentrations, but the lowest
sodium (p < 0.0001 and p < 0.0001), chloride (p = 0.0001 and p = 0.0432), albumin (p < 0.0090 and
p < 0.0001), PON-1 (p = 0.0122 and p = 0.0500) and GSH (p = 0.0042 and p = 0.0340) levels, respectively. In the group consisting of of stress-resistant (100%) and predominantly healthy (60.00%)
pigs subjected to short transportation (<30 min) at high loading density (~235 kg/m2
), none of the
individuals showed irregular behavioural reactions during unloading. Healthy NN pigs that underwent short transportation (<30 min) at high loading density (~235 kg/m2
) had the lowest lactate
(p < 0.0001 and p < 0.0001), glucose (p = 0.0450 and p = 0.0002), CK (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.0010), LDH
(p < 0.0001 and p = 0.0484) and ceruloplasmin (p = 0.0334 and p < 0.0001) levels, but the highest sodium
(p < 0.0001 and p < 0.0001) and chloride (p = 0.0001 and p = 0.0432) concentrations, respectively. Inconclusion, the most compromised welfare was recorded in subclinically diseased Nn pigs exposed
to short transportation (<30 min) and high loading density (~235 kg/m2
), while under the same
conditions, the welfare of healthy NN pigs was not compromised. Therefore, stress-carrier pigs with
subclinical pathological lesions should not be considered fit for transportation, indicating that the
health status and genotype are the key factors for optimising pig welfare

AB - Red blood cell osmotic fragility (RBCOF) refers to susceptibility to hemolysis in
vivo and in vitro. An increase in mean cellular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC)
also reflects in vivo and in vitro hemolysis. Common inflammatory infectious
diseases in dogs are often characterized by an increase in MCHC; however, it is
not known if there is a concomitant increase in RBCOF. The objective of this
study was to determine RBCOF in dogs with babesiosis, dirofilariosis,
parvovirosis, pyometra, and canine distemper and to investigate whether RBCOF
correlates with routine hematologic and biochemical parameters and lipoprotein
fractions. The diagnosis of canine infectious disease was made and complete
blood count, serum biochemical profiles, and lipoprotein electrophoresis were
determined according to current institutional protocols. RBCOF of healthy
control (n=8) and infected dogs (n=73) was measured with a phosphate-buffered
saline dilution test, and mean corpuscular fragility (MCF) was calculated. MCF
was increased in dirofilariosis, pyometra, and distemper; MCHC was increased
in all infected groups; HDL was decreased in babesiosis, pyometra, and
distemper compared with healthy controls. However, no correlation was found
between these parameters. On the other hand, hematological and biochemical
parameters, that are highly predictive of specific infections, correlated with MCF:
ALP for babesiosis (r=0.415, P=0.035), urea (r=-0.488, P=0.034) for
dirofilariosis, and leukocyte count (r=-0.820, P=0.046) for pyometra. Although
elevated MCHC levels in all samples from infected dogs indicate hemolysis,
RBCOF was elevated only in dirofilariosis, pyometra, and canine distemper,
leading to the conclusion that these apparently related phenomena are controlled
by different mechanisms.

AB - Oxidative stress plays an important role in pathogenesis of idiopathic epilepsy (IE). Although IE is the most
common neurological condition, oxidant–antioxidant status in epileptic dogs is still unknown. The aim of this
study is to evaluate the serum oxidant-antioxidant status in dogs with newly diagnosed IE. The status in 15 dogs
with IE and 15 healthy dogs is estimated through spectrophotometric determination of two oxidant markers:
advanced oxidation protein products-albumin index (AOPP) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances
(TBARS); and three antioxidant markers: total thiols (R-SH) level, glutathione (GSH) level, and paraoxonase-1
(PON-1) activity. Also, butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) activity is assessed in both groups of dogs. Higher AOPP
is observed in the dogs with newly diagnosed IE, while TBARS level shows no difference when compared to the
healthy dogs. In contrast, lower levels of antioxidants (R-SH, GSH, and PON-1) and BChE activity are found in the
dogs with IE. No significant differences are observed in the oxidant and antioxidant markers and BChE activity
across the investigated IE cases with focal and generalized seizures. Our findings provide evidence that dogs with
IE are characterized by an impaired serum oxidant–antioxidant balance and lower BChE activity, which may
contribute to a better understanding of IE pathogenesis.

AB - In veterinary medicine, knowledge about hematologic ratios (neutrophil-to-lymphocyte
ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and mean platelet volume-to-platelet
ratio (MPV/PLT)) is limited, particularly in cats. While the roles of these ratios have
been proven in oncology, systemic inflammation with or without systemic inflammatory
response syndrome (SIRS), and sepsis, information is lacking about their alterations in
non-septic effusions, like feline infectious peritonitis (FIP).
This study aimed to describe whether NLR, PLR, and MPV/PLT were changed and
whether they correlated with routine hematologic and biochemical parameters in 16
cats with non-septic effusions, highly suspected to be the effusive form of FIP without
SIRS, compared to nine clinically healthy cats.
The NLR was calculated as the absolute count of neutrophils divided by the absolute
count of lymphocytes, PLR by calculating the absolute platelet divided by the absolute
lymphocyte count, and MPV/PLT by dividing mean platelet volume by absolute platelet
count.
The NLR, MPV, and MPV/PLT ratios were higher in cats with non-septic effusions
suspected to be FIP, but PLR did not differ, when compared to healthy cats. Correlation analysis did not show any association between the selected ratios and hematological and
biochemical parameters.
In the absence of leukocytosis, increased NLR could help us to confirm the presence
of systemic inflammation in cats with non-septic effusions indicative of FIP. However,
a high MPV/PLT ratio should be interpreted with caution, especially in cats.

AB - Homocysteine (Hcy) was investigated as the biomarker of cardiac, renal, and gastrointestinal disorders
in dogs. Data about low Hcy concentrations in the systemic inflammatory response syndrome raised a hypothesis that
Hcy in dogs could be a negative acute-phase reactant. This survey compared Hcy concentrations, serum amyloid A
(SAA), and the routine laboratory parameters between healthy (HD, N=6) and dogs with inflammation of different
extent: mild (dirofilariosis (DIR), N=31), moderate (babesiosis (BAB), N=12), and severe (pyometra (PYO), N=8).
The BAB and PYO groups had lower Hcy er than HD. Also, the levels in the PYO group were below those in the
DIRO group. SAA had the inverse pattern. Across the groups, Hcy and SAA levels correlated negatively (ρ = -0.502,
P<0.001). Hcy and SAA correlated with the erythrocyte count, hematocrit, hemoglobin and mean cellular hemoglobin
concentrations, and neutrophil count, with correlations being positive for Hcy and negative for SAA. Among all dogs,
hemoglobin was the only independent predictor of Hcy concentration. Hcy levels in canine infections, decreased as
acute-phase reaction (APR) intensified. Also, they were related with the hematology changes accompanying the APR.
Further studies will establish the clinical potential of these alterations.

AB - The study was designed to evaluate antigenotoxic effect of methanol Teucrium arduini and Teucrium flavum extracts against mitomycin C (MMC)-induced chromosome and DNA damage in vitro. Cytokinesis-block micronucleus (CBMN) and comet assays were used to investigate effect of plant extracts in different concentrations (125, 250, 500 and 1000 µg/mL) on human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs). The obtained results showed that the all tested concentrations of T. arduini and the highest concentration of T. flavum significantly reduced the MMC-induced micronucleus (MN) frequency in comparison to positive control (only MMC). There were significantly negative correlations between the extracts concentrations and MN frequencies (Pearson, r = −0.905, p = 0.0001 for T. arduini; r = −0.861, p = 0.0001 for T. flavum). The extracts of both plants further lowered the MMC-decreased nuclear division index (NDI) in a dose dependent-manner (Pearson, r = −0.837, p = 0.001 for T. arduini; r = −0.598, p = 0.040 for T. flavum), but significantly only in the highest concentration (1000 µg/mL). Comet assay showed that extracts reduced MMC-increased genetic damage index (GDI), significantly in the concentrations of 500 and 1000 μg/mL, in comparison with positive control. Based on our results, it can be concluded that methanol T. arduini and T. flavum extracts possess protective proapoptotic and antigenotoxic effect which is indication of their medicinal relevance and use in treatment.

AB - The highest number of acute Babesia canis cases in dogs is recorded over the February-May (Feb-May) period, which also represents the optimal climate conditions for tick activity in Belgrade, Serbia. A possibility that the acute phase response is more intense in dogs developing the disease in the Feb-May period compared with the response in other time periods of the year was tested. A total of 63 client-owned dogs with acute B. canis infection were enrolled and the routine hematology and biochemistry parameters-serum amyloid A (SAA), IgG against B. canis, level of parasitemia, ceruloplasmin (CER), paraoxonase-1 (PON-1), and fibrinogen-were measured. Acute phase indexes (API) were calculated as (SAA×CER)/(Iron×PON-1) and (SAA×CER)/(Albumin×Iron). Statistics included Kruskal-Wallis test and logistic regression analysis. The results showed that in the Feb-May period, the following parameters were lower: creatinine, albumin, iron, and level of parasitemia. Furthermore, increased API values were more probable in the Feb-May than in the other periods. Together, higher acute phase response intensity and presumptive hemodilution in the Feb-May period indicate a more acute course of B. canis infection than in other time periods of the year.

Osim
AB - It is estimated that the prevalence of kidney disease in the total population of dogs
and cats is about 0.5% to 3%, but in the geriatric population the prevalence of chronic
kidney disease reaches as much as 80%. In addition to breed predisposition and age,
hypercalcemia, heart disease, periodontal problems, cystitis, urolithiasis, hyperthyroidism,
metabolic disorders, and chronic or persistent infections are listed as risk factors.
Continuous monitoring of the renal function is important for timely and appropriate therapy
managment. Appropriate therapy can significantly slow down the progressive course of
renal disease. The classic markers to test the loss of kidney function are concentration
of urea and creatinine in the serum. Their concentration increases only when the reserve
capacity of the kidneys is lost, ie. when 75% of all nephrons fail. The workshop will explain
and demonstrate the importance of 1) symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) as a new, more
sensitive marker of renal dysfunction, 2) determining the urine protein-creatinine ratio, as
well as 3) differential diagnosis of glomerular or tubular proteinuria using polyacrilamid gel
electrophoresis.

AB - Background: Canine babesiosis is a disease with a seasonal character. We have
previously observed that in Belgrade, the capital of the Republic of Serbia, 60% of
cases with the acute-phase response (APR) give a notable maximum between mid-
February and May, the so-called “high season”. The other two peak seasons with
less pronounced maxima are in winter, from January to mid-February, and in
autumn, from October to December. Objectives: Based on clinical observations, we
postulate that dogs infected with B. canis in the “high season” develop a more
intense APR than dogs in the other two seasons. Material and Methods: To test this
hypothesis, we compare the relative parasite load and the level of acute-phase
proteins and reactants, their indexes (calculated as a combination of
concentrations of fast and slow positive, and fast and slow negative acute phase
reactants), as well as the concentration of coagulation factors, complete blood
count, and biochemistry among dogs that developed the disease in the autumn,
winter, and “high season”. Results: The relative parasite load is the lowest, and APR
Indexes are the highest in dogs infected in “high season”. These findings are
accompanied by relatively low creatinine and urea, implying that dogs in “high
season” had hemodilution, thus further suggesting short incubation. Unlike other
acute-phase proteins, fibrinogen showed the lowest concentration in “high
season”. Conclusion: Future research will help unveil the connection between
more intense APR and relatively low parasite load and fibrinogen concentration.

pre klanja, nisu uočene promene u izgledu i funkciji mišićno-skeletnog sistema.
Urađen je rutinski pregled ST kojim je opisana boja, prozirnost, viskoznost i broj ćelija.
Određena je koncentracija sledećih biohemijskih parametara: ukupnih proteina,
albumina, aktivnost alkalne fosfataze (ALP), aspartat aminotransferaze (AST), kreatin
proteina i aktivnosti ALP, koncentracije proteina i albumina, aktivnosti AST
i CK.
zglobovima nisu prisutne. Nalaz povećanog broja ćelija u ST bez inflamatornih promena
zahteva dodatna ispitivanja.

AB - Progressive tissue injury in canine leishmaniosis (CL) is related to the deposition of
immune complexes, which induces vasculitis and leads to endothelial dysfunction.
Homocysteine (Hcy) increase may worsen endothelial dysfunction, but data concerning
its concentration in different CL stages and links to the acute phase response and
oxidative stress are missing. We compared Hcy levels between dogs with mild (N=24)
and moderate CL without treatment (N=17) and treated with anti-Leishmania drugs
and vitamin B supplements (N=9). Dogs with moderate CL, regardless of therapy
administration, had more distinct clinical signs, lower erythron values, and a higher level
of acute-phase proteins (APPs), IgG against Leishmania spp., urea and creatinine, than
dogs with mild CL. Hcy values did not differ between stages, but treated dogs had the
lowest levels of Hcy. An inverse relationship existed between Hcy and the CL stage,
therapy, levels of IgG, and clinical pathology data. The only positive relationship existed
between Hcy and the erythron state. The disease stage and therapeutic intervention
were not related to the oxidative stress level, except in the case of paraoxonase-1/
Hcy ratio, indicating favorable conditions for antioxidative defense in treated dogs. In
conclusion, changes in Hcy levels indicated its possible involvement with endothelial
dysfunction and inverse relationship to tissue injury evaluated by APPs. Finally, Hcy
might be an early marker of favorable conditions for endothelium recovery in CL

AB - Hemolysis and systemic acute inflammation characterize canine babesiosis caused by the intraerythrocytic protozoan parasite Babesia canis. Our hypothesis was that blood redox homeostasis of patients that suffered acute B. canis infection might be disturbed even after treatment with imidocarb-dipropionate and successful clinical recovery. Eight owner dogs with acute B. canis infection were used for this study. We analyzed the complete blood count, acute phase proteins (ceruloplasmin, haptoglobin, paraoxonase-1) in the serum, antioxidant enzymes (catalase and glutathione peroxidase) in the erythrocytes, and oxidative stress markers (malondialdehyde in erythrocytes and thiol groups in serum) at presentation and 15 days after treatment. Results were evaluated by corresponding statistical tests. At presentation, anemia, low/normal leukocyte count and severe thrombocytopenia occurred together with increased ceruloplasmin, haptoglobin levels within the reference interval, decreased paraoxonase-1 and compromised antioxidant defense in the red blood cells. After treatment and successful clinical recovery, hematological values generally fitted within the reference intervals, acute phase proteins were within the physiological levels in the majority of cases and the activities of the antioxidant enzymes were increased. However, elevated malondialdehyde levels indicated increased oxidative damage of erythrocytes that remained as a deleterious sequel despite a successful clinical recovery of the dogs.

Glutathione peroxidases are selenoenzymes which have a crucial role in the protection of animals against oxidative stress.
Materials and Methods. From September 2017 to April 2018, a group of eight red-eared sliders were admitted at the Clinic for Small Animals, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Belgrade for elective diagnostic celioscopy. The turtles were of unknown age, weight from 1.20 kg to 1.86 kg. The anesthesia protocol involved using ketamine and medetomidine, both at a low dosage (10 mg kg-1 and 0.1 mg kg-1, respectively) as induction, after which anesthesia was maintained using isoflurane at 3% (vapor setting) in 100% oxygen (0.5 L min-1). Medetomidine was reversed with atipamezole (0.2 mg kg-1), given intramuscularly. The elective celioscopy was performed according to standard protocols. One day prior to anesthesia, heparinized blood samples were taken using the subcarapacial venous plexus for venipuncture. The second sampling took place three hours after the anesthetics were administered.
Results and Conclusions. GPx3 activity in the blood plasmas (n=8) was measured by the coupled test as described by Günzler et al. (1974). Data were tested for normality by the Shapiro-Wilk normality test and the groups were compared using a paired t-test.
Blood plasma GPx3 activity was significantly higher (p=0.009) after a three-hour recovery period from inhalation anesthesia performed for elective diagnostic celioscopy, than before anesthesia. The measured post-anesthesia GPx3 activities were, on average,
80% higher than the measurements prior to anesthesia. It can be concluded that the statistically significant increase in the activity of plasma GPx3 from 91.02±36.05 mKat L-1 prior to anesthesia to 160.21±58.94 mKat L-1 three hours after anesthesia is due to the change in oxygen saturation. This is increased to 100% during the procedure, thus exposing the turtles to conditions of high oxygen saturation.
Materijal i metode.
Rezultati i zaključak.

AB - Bioactivity of acetone extract of Leccinum scabrum was evaluated. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by free radical scavenging activity, reducing power and determination of total phenolic content. The microdilution plate method was used to detect antimicrobial activity. Cytotoxic activity was tested by MTT assay. Genotoxic potential was evaluated by comet assay. Results showed a stronger free radical scavenging activity, but the reducing power was less pronounced. The total content of phenols in the extract was 14.91 µg PE/mg. The minimum inhibitory concentration related to the tested microorganisms fluctuated in the range 0.039-10 mg/mL. The most sensitive was Bacillus cereus. A strong cytotoxic activity was revealed with IC50 values ranging between 73.64 and 200.00 µg/mL, among which HeLa was the most sensitive. Results showed that the extract was not genotoxic and it decreased the H2O2-induced GDI values in comparison to the positive control. L. scabrum possesses bioactivities such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, cytotoxic, no genotoxic and protective against H2O2, and in the highest tested concentration it showed a synergistic activity.

AB - The common signs of canine babesiosis caused by an infection with Babesia canis are fever, anorexia, lethargy, pulse alterations, anemia, and occasionally mild icterus. Dogs with these clinical signs can be divided into two groups: those with acute-phase reaction and those with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). Factors associated with the occurrence of SIRS in canine babesiosis have not been thoroughly researched. This article outlines a cross-sectional study of 54 client-owned dogs with an acute B. canis infection, and evaluates the differences in age, gender, laboratory findings, parasite load, and seroreactivity against B. canis between the SIRS and the SIRS-free dogs. We have analyzed a complete blood count, serum biochemistry, serum amyloid A, ceruloplasmin, paraoxonase-1, serology, and PCR testing using standard methodologies. The frequency of SIRS among the investigated dogs reached 0.59. Male dogs and those seronegative against B. canis, were more frequent in the SIRS group, whilst age and parasite load could not be associated with the presence of SIRS. Dogs with SIRS had a lower count of total leukocytes, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes, and a lower concentration of iron and bilirubin compared with SIRS-free dogs. No significant differences in the concentration of acute-phase proteins have been noticed to exist between the groups of dogs. Further, the seronegative dogs had a lower count of lymphocytes and monocytes and a higher parasite load than the seroreactive dogs. Multivariate logistic regression analysis has identified leukopenia (<6 × 109/L) and monocytopenia (<0.2 × 109/L) as independent associates of SIRS in the investigated dogs, thus implying that these routine tests could be used as reliable markers for SIRS.
