AB - Upotreba rendgenskih i ultrazvučnih aparata je sve više zastupljena
u dijagnostici patoloških stanja respiratornog i kardiovaskularnog
i uz rezultate kliničkog i laboratorijskog pregleda, pružaju
dovoljno podataka za postavljanje validne dijagnoze. Zbog svoje neinvazivnosti
i relativno brzog i jednostavnog izvođenja, moguće ih je
višekratno ponavljati, što omogućava praćenje napredovanja bolesti i
procenjivanje efekata primenjene terapije.
rendgenskog snimanja toraksa i ehokardiografskog pregleda. Detaljno
će biti opisana anatomija respiratornih organa i srca u rendgenskoj,
odnosno ultrazvučnoj slici. Pored toga, biće prikazana i brojna patološka
praksi.

AB - The aim of this study was to establish two new methods for measuring the tibial plateau
angle (TPA): proximal tibial circle (PTC) as well as full tibial circle (FTC) method, and
to test their reliability in comparison to the classical method (CM). Three radiologists
implemented each method, and measurements were repeated three times.
The results of consecutive measurements obtained by two observers had excellent
reliability with an interclass correlation coefficient (ICC) greater than 0.9 for all
methods, while measurements obtained by the third observer had good reliability for
the CM (ICC=0.885) and PTC method (ICC=0.851).
The results obtained by the three observers for all methods indicate good reliability for
the PTC and FTC methods (ICC=0.848 and 0.880, respectively) and excellent reliability
for CM (ICC = 0.909); the results of the different observers for each method were not
significantly different.
The significant difference resulting from the applied measurement method (ICC =
0.447 and P<0.01) was confirmed. Statistically significant differences were not found
between the CM and PTC method (P>0.05), while differences between the PTC and
FTC, as well as CM and FTC methods, were statistically significant (P<0.01).
New methods for TPA measurements based on shorter tibial axes may be an alternative
to a method based on the full-length axis. A high correlation between the methods
indicates the precision of each of them. Newly established methods can be used when
the tarsal joint is not included in radiographs or is affected by degenerative changes,
making use of the classical method not possible.

AB - Patološka su stanja zuba kunića u svakodnevnoj kliničkoj praksi vrlo česta i često rezultiraju poremećajem u funkciji organa probavnog i respiratornog sustava, a mogu imati i letalan ishod.
AB - Pathological conditions of rabbit teeth are very common in daily clinical practice and often result in dysfunction of the organs belonging to the digestive and respiratory systems, with a possible fatal outcome. Therefore, special attention should be devoted to early diagnostics to enable timely treatment and prevent complications. Radiological diagnostics is a simple, fast and unavoidable procedure in the assessment of dental conditions. However, unlike other mammal species, radiological examination of rabbit teeth is characterised by certain specificities in examination techniques and radiograph interpretation, presented in detail in this paper

AB - The first few weeks after broilers hatch are the period of most intense bone growthand development, and the time when they are most susceptible to the in fluence ofvarious external and internal factors. Research in the recent decades has focused on theinvolvement of melatonin in bone development during early life in chickens. Melatoninrelease from the pineal gland has a circadian rhythm, with the highest levels circulatingduring the night and decreasing during the light phase of the day. Various types oflighting are used in intensive broiler production. In this study, the effects of melatoninon the tibial structure and growth of broilers were investigated. During the first twoweeks of life, two groups of chickens were kept under continuous light and fed thesame diet, with the experimental group receiving melatonin in the amount of 0.03 g/kg of feed. The results obtained showed that the addition of melatonin in the diet hadpositive effects on the development and growth of the tibia, which was expressed ina signi ficantly greater thickness of the diaphysis and cortical bone of the diaphysis, higher breaking force and higher values of alkaline phosphatase activity. The corticalbone mineral density of the tibia did not differ signi ficantly between the groups ofchicken.

AB - Dacryocystography is a specific method of radiological examination of the nasolacrimal apparatus based on the use of a positive contrast agent, which allows the assessment of its morphology and patency. Pathological conditions of the nasolacrimal apparatus in rabbits are very common in clinical practice, and the disturbance of its patency is usually a consequence of dental diseases or respiratory infections. The aim of this article is to present the most common pathological conditions that can affect the patency of the nasolacrimal apparatus in rabbits, a detailed anatomical description of the nasolacrimal apparatus in these animals, and the technique for performing dacriyocystography.

AB - Numerous studies are based on the use of animal models; however, in bipedal andtetrapedal organisms there are significant differences in the biomechanics of the spinalcolumn, which can significantly impair the quality and applicability of the resultsobtained. The aim of this study is to obtain basic data on the morphometric parametersof guinea pig lumbar vertebrae, the analysis of which will indicate the location of thebiggest mechanical load. The lumbar vertebra morphometry test was performed bymeans of X-ray imageing obtained from 12 guinea pigs, with equal numbers of malesand females. The results of investigations show that guinea pig lumbar vertebrae havean irregular trapezoid geometry and that the measured body lengths of L4 and L5 arethe largest. The height parameters determined in the medial level showed that L4 hadthe most concave body. Moreover, L4 had the greatest depth of the spinal canal at thesame measurement level. Consequently, in guinea pigs, the greatest load is in the L4region, unlike in humans, where, due to the axial load of the spinal column, the highestpressure is exerted on the last lumbar vertebrae.

AB - Cranial cruciate ligament disease is a common pathological condition in dogs that is often presented in daily clinical practice. Different risk factors for the development of this condition include breed, sex, age, bodyweight and neuter status, as well as different biological and biomechanical mechanisms. In the literature, special attention has been paid to the role of the tibial plateau angle in damage to the cranial cruciate ligament. Although the disease was first described at the beginning of last century, and since then different surgical methods have been developed to treat it, its aetiology remains unclear. In this review, contemporary literature data related to the role of tibial plateau angle in canine cranial cruciate ligament rupture are presented.

AB - The objective of this work was to assess absorbed doses in organs and tissues of a rabbit, following computed tomography (CT) examinations, using a dedicated 3D voxel model. Absorbed doses in relevant organs were calculated using the MCNP5 Monte Carlo software. Calculations were perfomed for two standard CT protocols, using tube voltages of 110 kVp and 130 kVp. Absorbed doses were calculated in 11 organs and tissues, i.e., skin, bones, brain, muscles, heart, lungs, liver, spleen, kidney, testicles, and fat tissue. The doses ranged from 15.3 to 28.3 mGy, and from 40.2 to 74.3 mGy, in the two investigated protocols. The organs that received the highest dose were bones and kidneys. In contrast, brain and spleen were organs that received the smallest doses. Doses in organs which are stretched along the body did not change significantly with distance. On the other hand, doses in organs which are localized in the body showed maximums and minimums. Using the voxel model, it is possible to calculate the dose distribution in the rabbit’s body after CT scans, and study the potential biological effects of CT doses in certain organs. The voxel model presented in this work can be used to calculated doses in all radiation experiments in which rabbits are used as experimental animals.

AB - Introduction / Purpose:
The subchondral bone plate plays an important role in the load transfer across joints. The
subchondral bone density distribution is a reflection of the loading history of the joint,
and the heterogeneous density distribution expected to be reflected in the subchondral
bone material properties. The goal of this study was to evaluate the strength of the
subchondral bone plate of the canine talus and to correlate it to the subchondral bone
density.
Methods:
On twenty, paired, cadaver tali of different large breed dogs, test points were defined on
the subchondral bone plate. At these points the mechanical strength was determined by
indentation testing, registering the maximum penetration force, and the density was
measured by means of computer tomographic osteoabsorptiometry (CTOAM).
Results:
Neither the density nor the strength were distributed homogeneously over the surface of
the subchondral bone plate. In all specimens, a high correlation was found between the
subchondral bone density and the mechanical strength. The coefficient of determination
(r
2
) ranged from 0.78 to 0.96 with a mean of 0.89 and was statistically significant (p <
0.01). The location of the density maxima matched the location of maximal mechanical
strength. There was no significant difference in the location of the density maxima and
the strength maxima (p-value = 0.512).
Discussion / Conclusion:
CTOAM provides a non-invasive opportunity to not only assess and visualize the density
of the subchondral bone plate on densitograms but also the mechanical strength, and to
perform longitudinal studies on subchondral bone density and strength in dogs.

AB - Craniomandibular osteopathy is a rare disorder in dogs, characterised by subperiosteal and extraperiosteal new bone proliferations on the skull, on the mandibles in particular and occasionally on long bones. Data about craniomandibular osteopathy in the golden jackal (Canis aureus) are lacking. This paper describes craniomandibular osteopathy in a seven-month-old animal. The mandibular region and the distal section of the hindlimb were examined radiologically and by CT. Both imaging modalities showed ossifying periosteal deposits localised on the left side of the mandible and irregular periosteal ossifying deposits covering the surface of the crural bones. Histopathology revealed new bone formation in the endosteum, periosteum and trabecular bone of the mandible and in the distal section of the hindlimb, but no inflammatory cells were found. Craniomandibular osteopathy in free-living canids has not yet been reported. However, the macroscopic imaging and histopathological features in this pup were consistent with the disease.

AB - Objective Subchondral bone density distribution can be used to study joint biomechanics non-invasively. Differences in joint loading between related species can aid in the understanding of joint loading and the development of certain types of orthopaedic pathology. This study was conducted to evaluate density distribution in the subchondral bone of the talus of different Canidae species, as a parameter reflecting the long-term joint loading in the tarsocrural joint. Materials and Methods The tarsal joints of cadaveric dogs of different breeds were included, that is, German Shepherd (n = 5), Bouvier des Flandres (n = 3) and Labrador Retriever (n = 6). Additionally, golden jackals (n = 5) (Canis aureus) and wolves (n = 5) (Canis lupus) were included. Consecutive computed tomography slices were made and the subchondral bone density distribution was evaluated using computer tomographic osteoabsorptiometry. Different breeds and species were visually compared. Results Differences were found in the subchondral bone density distribution of the talus between breeds and between species (Canis familiaris, Canis lupus and Canis aureus). Discussion and Conclusion Based on the density distribution, there are differences in loading conditions of the tarsocrural joint in different species of Canidae. The joint loading distribution is very similar between dogs of the same breed and within the same species. Although between-breed differences can be explained by conformational differences, the between-species differences remain subject to further research.

AB - In recent years, computed tomography (CT) has become very common in veterinary medicine. It is well known that testicles are organs with high radiosensitivity and their function can be impaired even after exposure to low radiation doses. In this work, we calculated the absorbed radiation doses after CT was performed with different voltage/current levels and correlated it with the activity of antioxidant enzymes in rabbit testicles. Two hours after CT, the activities of catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) were increased in the testicles of animals that received an absorbed dose of 29.2 mGy. The same changes, along with elevated glutathione reductase (GR) activity, were observed after 7 days in animals that received the highest absorbed dose (46.3 mGy). It would appear that absorbed doses above 27.8 mGy provoked the antioxidant reaction but the time scale of the reaction was dose-dependent. Examination of the obtained results revealed that the main denominator of CT influence was a higher current. Our results suggest that CT influences the antioxidant status in rabbit testicles. The changes in antioxidant enzyme activities were dose- and time-dependent and influenced by the applied current.

abstract = "In recent years, computed tomography (CT) has become very common in veterinary medicine. The changes in antioxidant enzyme activities were dose- and time-dependent and influenced by the applied current.",

AB - Collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) is a frequently used animal model of rheumatoid arthritis, human autoimmune disease that exhibits clear sex bias in incidence and clinical course. Female Dark Agouti rats immunized for CIA showed also greater incidence and higher arthritic score than their male counterparts. The study investigated sex differences in mechanisms controlling the primary immune responses in draining lymph nodes (dLNs), as a factor contributing to this dimorphism. The higher frequencies of CD4 + CD25 + Foxp3- cells, presumably activated effector T (Teff) cells, and IL-17+, IFN-gamma + and IL-17 + IFN-gamma + T cells were found in female compared with male rat dLNs. However, the frequency of CD4 + CD25 + Foxp3 + T regulatory cells (Treg) did not differ between sexes. Thus, CD4 + Teff cells/Treg ratio, and IL-17 + T cells/Treg and IFN-gamma + T cells/Treg ratios were higher in female than in male rats, and among them was found lower frequency of PD-1+ cells. This suggested less efficient control of (auto)immune Th1/Th17 cell responses in female rat dLNs. On the contrary, the frequency of IL-4 + T cells was lower in female than in male rat dLNs. Consistently, the ratio of serum levels of collagen-specific IgG2a (IFN-gamma-dependent, with an important pathogenic role in CIA) and IgG1 (IL-4-dependent) was shifted towards IgG2a in female compared with male rats. As a whole, the study suggests that sexual dimorphism in the control of T cell activation/polarization could contribute to sex bias in the susceptibility to CIA. Moreover, the study advises the use of animals of both sexes in the preclinical testing of new drugs for rheumatoid arthritis.

AB - The objective of this study was to assess the radiation dose in computed tomography examinations of rabbits using different examination protocols and to correlate these values with the activity of antioxidant enzymes in their red blood cells following irradiation. The presented results revealed that a single, routine computed tomography scan exposure led to a different response of the activity of antioxidant enzymes in red blood cells regarding both dose and time. The results indicate that there is a dose threshold that is about 25 mGy. Doses below that level do not produce any significant changes in the level of antioxidant enzymes activity. On the other hand, the level just above that threshold had a significant impact on the antioxidant defence, but in a relatively short time period (2 hours after exposure), compared to the higher dose that requires a longer adaptive period.

AB - Myelography is the radiological method of examination of the spinal column, and involves the application of contrast media into the subarachnoidal space in order to diagnose different pathological conditions. The formerly used application of oil-based contrast media did not yield consistent, satisfactory results and also carried certain risks. Due to the poor mixing of oil-based contrast agents with cerebrospinal fluid, distribution along the spinal canal was uneven, excretion from the body very slow, and their application often caused chronic inflammation. For these reasons, oilbased contrast media have since been replaced with low osmolality, water soluble, non-ionic contrasts. In contemporary radiology, the commonly used contrast media for myelography are metrizamide, iopamidol and iohexol. Metrizamide is often used as an isotonic solution containing 170 mg I/mL, while iopamidol and iohexol are slightly hypertonic, containing approximately 300 mg I/mL. The application of these contrast agents can also produce a wide range of complications in clinical practice, such as neurological exacerbation, hyperaesthesia, vomiting and apnea. These symptoms are usually a consequence of metrizamide, but may also occur following the administration of iopamidol and iohexsol. In that case, complications are mostly transient. Regarding the facts presented, a large number of literature data are outlined in this paper. Moreover, different author reports are described regarding the selection of contrast agents, their method of application, and the possible complications that can occur as a result of their usage.

AB - An unusual case of forelimb lameness in a three-year-old German Shepherd has been described. An incomplete ossification of the humeral condyle (IOHC) in both elbows has been diagnosed, which is a rare condition in this breed. The original radiographs and clinical examination were inconclusive. The diagnosis was established after scintigraphy proving elbow involvement and followed by a CT examination of both elbows. An arthroscopic examination showed a cleft in the articular cartilage between both humeral condyles. Because of the absence of lameness at the moment of admittance, initially conservative treatment was performed, which consisted of rest and avoiding trauma. The dog remained lameness-free during one year, where after he showed severe lameness in the left front leg. Although a second CT examination showed some progress of the lesions, it was decided to treat the left elbow with forage and physiotherapy consisting of laser treatment and therapeutic ultrasound. The dog responded favorably to the therapy and remains free of lameness to date. The optimal treatment of this disease remains debatable but the results of the treatment of this patient suggest that forage combined with physiotherapy could offer a justifiable option.

AB - The use of phosphate mineral products in animal nutrition, as a major source of phosphor and calcium, can lead to uranium entering the food chain. The aim of the present study was to determine the protective effect of natural sepiolite and sepiolite treated with acid for broilers after oral intake of uranium. The broilers were contaminated for 7 days with 25 mg/uranyl nitrate per day. Two different adsorbents (natural sepiolite and sepiolite treated with acid) were given via gastric tube immediately after the oral administration of uranium. Natural sepiolite reduced uranium distribution by 57 % in kidney, 80 % in liver, 42 % in brain, and 56 % in muscle. A lower protective effect was observed after the administration of sepiolite treated with acid, resulting in significant damage of intestinal villi in the form of shortening, fragmentation, and necrosis, and histopathological lesions on kidney in the form of edema and abruption of epithelial cells in tubules. When broilers received only sepiolite treated with acid (no uranyl nitrate), shortening of intestinal villi occurred. Kidney injuries were evident when uranium concentrations in kidney were 0.88 and 1.25 A mu g/g dry weight. It is concluded that adding of natural sepiolite to the diets of broilers can reduce uranium distribution in organs by significant amount without adverse side effects.

AB - Dental diseases in dogs and cats are of increasing importance in veterinary practice. If not diagnosed and treated on time, they can significantly affect the quality of life and pet health as well. Roentgenography of orofacial system, as a part of veterinary dentistry, is an important diagnostic tool that provides insight into diseases and irregularities of the teeth, shows macrostructure of bone parts, and also may indicate the etiology and genesis of various pathological conditions of the teeth. The objective of this paper is to point out to most common pathologies which small animal veterinary dentistry daily meets, as well as to foster the systematic development in this area in order to find more quality to both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

AB - The aims of this study were to define age-related histological changes in the articular cartilage of the stifle joint in non-chondrodystrophic dogs and to determine whether physical activity has a positive impact on preservation of cartilage structure during ageing. Twenty-eight German shepherd dogs were included in the study. These dogs had no evidence of joint inflammation as defined by clinical assessment, radiology and synovial fluid analysis (specifically absence of synovial fluid serum amyloid A). The dogs were grouped as young working (n = 4), young non-working (n = 5), aged working (n = 13) and aged non-working (n = 6) animals. Gross changes in the stifle joints were recorded and biopsy samples of femoral and tibial articular cartilage were evaluated for thickness; chondrocyte number, density, surface area and morphology; isogenous group morphology; tidemark integrity; subchondral bone structure; presence of proteoglycans/glycosaminoglycans; and expression of type I, II and X collagens. The major age-related changes, not related to type of physical activity, included elevated chondrocyte density and thinning of tibial cartilage and increased chondrocyte surface area in the superficial and intermediate zone of the femoral cartilage. There was also expression of type X collagen in the femoral and tibial calcified and non-calcified cartilage; however, type X collagen was not detected in the superficial zone of old working dogs. Therefore, ageing, with or without physical activity, leads to slight cartilage degeneration, while physical activity modulates the synthesis of type X collagen in the superficial cartilage zone, partially preserving the structure of hyaline cartilage.

AB - Changes caused by joint diseases that are manifested in X-ray are very diverse. Some of them are present in all arthroparthies while some are specific to certain diseases. For all the arthropathies it is specific that the duration of a disease significantly influences the presence and intensity of radiological changes. In this paper there analyzed in detail some basic radiological joint diseases manifestations such as: distension of the joint capsule, change of size (width) of the joint space, change of position of corresponding bones within the joint, change in quality of subchondral bone, the appearance of intra-articular mineralization and calcified structures, as well as the presence of perichondral and periarticular bone proliferations. Beside that, there are described in detail arthropathies of different etiology.

AB - The aim of the present study was to investigate the distribution of uranium (uranyl nitrate hexahydrate, UN) in muscle and organs (kidney, liver, and brain) of broilers, after a 7-day contamination with UN and administration of two different adsorbents (organobentonite and organozeolite). The birds were contaminated during 7 days with 25 mg/UN per day. Adsorbents were given via gastric tube, immediately after contamination with UN. In group 1 that did not receive any adsorbents, histopathological changes in the contaminated broilers were observed in small intestine, liver, and kidney in the form of necrosis of intestinal villi, oedema and cytoplasmic vacuolation of hepatocytes, and dystrophic changes in the kidney tubules epithelium. Organobentonite administered via gastric tube (group 2) reduced uranium distribution by 66 % in kidney, 81 % in liver, and 34 % in brain. In group 3, administration of organozeolite reduced uranium distribution by 67 % in kidney, 68 % in liver, and 49 % in brain. In groups 2 and 3, where the broilers received adsorbents immediately after the UN contamination, no histopathological lesions were observed.
