AB - This overview highlights the significance of conserving the Tsigai sheep, an old native
transboundary breed, and emphasizes the importance of conducting a longitudinal assessment
of its population status. The analysis of the FAO statistical database and the national sheep
yearbooks over a 15-year period reveals fluctuations in the population size of Tsigai sheep in
the Republic of Serbia. Several factors, including bio-geographic, agro-economic, sociocultural
and others, have influenced Tsigai sheep management. The observed population
dynamics show a low point in 2009 with 1788 evidenced individuals, followed by a fluctuating
increase, reaching its peak in 2023 with 5865 evidenced individuals in Serbia. It's noted that the
breed has an endangered status if the total population size falls below 10,000 breeding ewes
according to national and international regulations. Although the population has stabilized in
recent years, this breed in the Republic of Serbia is still categorized as endangered and
vulnerable. Challenges to the population include uncontrolled crossbreeding with more
productive breeds like Ille de France, Würtemberg and Suffolk. Economic and demographic
reasons, contributing to this with erosion of the population, being a significant concern. Despite
economic factors, the importance of conserving Tsigai sheep is underscored by cultural,
historical and heritage considerations. Long-term supportive measures are deemed essential not
only for economic reasons but primarily to ensure the survival of the breed, reflecting its
cultural, historical and heritage value

AB - Demografske promene, ubrzani razvoj i intenziviranje industrije u poslednjih
dvadeset godina, doveli su do značajnih promena u ovčarskoj proizvodnji, uključujući
i rasni sastav ovaca. U radu je prikazan obim proizvodnje ovčarske proizvodnje u dva
vremenska perioda i to od 1981. do 1990. godine i od 2012. do 2021. godine. Poređeni
su podaci o brojnom stanju ovaca, proizvodnji mesa, mleka i vune. Srbija, posebno u
autohtonim rasama ovaca ima značajne potencijale povećanja broja ovaca a time i
proizvoda ovčarstva. Ovčarstvo u Srbiji ima društveni, ekonomski, ekološki i kulturni
značaj, podržava život na selu doprinosi proizvodnji mesa, mleka i vune, pomaže
upravljanjem ekosistemima, čuva biodiverzitet, promoviše ruralni razvoj i čuvar je
kulturnih tradicija.

starosti jedinke do 4 godine.

AB - Sjenica Pester plateau is a high natural value region in Serbia characterized by pastures and traditional land use practices. The promotion of sustainable use of animal resources in the Sienica Pester plateau, through Republic Project of Serbia 2011-2023 conducted by FVM, University of Belgrade, aims to support agroecology and rural development in the area. One of the ecosystem services provided by Sjenica sheep farming is the maintenance of pastures ecosystems. The farming system is based on traditional grazing practices that have been used in the region for centuries. This paper presents the current situation of rational use of native Sjenica sheep and its impact on ecosystem services. The field surveys were conducted in the Sjenica Pester plateau in the summer of 2022. Sheep grazing practices, grassland biodiversity and landscape management were analyzed. The results suggest that Sjenica sheep farming system has helped to maintain the pastures and preserve the cultural heritage of the region. It is important to continue monitoring and evaluating the impact of native Sienica sheep farming on ecosystem services to ensure that the practices remain sustainable and have a positive impact on the local environment.

AB - A new field of research in reproductive biology was heralded by the discovery of
melatonin in 1958. The concentration of melatonin follows light-dark cycles with
significantly higher concentrations during darkness. The authors present the importance
of the melatonin protein hormone by focusing on the reproductive processes in
domestic sheep. In their literature review, they report that sheep melatonin levels show
daily and seasonal rhythms. In sheep as a seasonal breeder and short-day animal species,
seasonal increases in melatonin production stimulate sexual activity. The authors
describe innovative possibilities for regulating melatonin levels in sheep production.
The use of exogenous melatonin brings forward the expression of the sexual cycle. It
increases the fertility rate, the number of lambs born, and the chances of survival of
twin lambs. Melatonin is a neuroprotection compound against cerebral hypoxia and the
development of inflammatory processes in the growing foetus and the newborn lamb.

AB - This study aimed to investigate whether diet and different goat production systems affect
the quality of milk, white-brined cheese and whey. It also aimed to determine the suitability of
goat’s milk for the production of white-brined cheese. The physicochemical composition and
hygienic quality of raw goat’s milk were studied, as well as the fatty acid profile and nutritional
indices of milk and white-brined cheese. Traditional white-brined cheeses were produced from
bulk goat milk from two farms in three samples. The results confirmed that different husbandry
systems and diets influence the physicochemical composition of goat milk and cheese and their
fatty acid profile. Milk and cheese from grazing goats contained significantly more (p<0.05) fat,
protein, total solids and a higher percentage of cheese yield. Nutritional indices were also more
favourable, with a lower atherogenic (AI) and thrombogenic (TI) index and a higher health-promoting index (HHP) and hypocholesterolemic/hypercholesterolemic ratio (HH). Goat grazing
contributed to a higher content of n-3 fatty acids in milk and cheese and thus to a lower n-6/n-3
ratio. Cheese-making efficiency and protein recovery in the curd (%REC) was better with pasture milk, whereas fat recovery was better with milk from housed goats. Consumers rated the
unripened white cheeses from both production systems the highest. In addition, the production
of white cheese with brine results in good quality whey with significant health benefits. Natural
pasture provides significantly more benefits to goats than confinement, especially in the early
stages of use. This contributes to the high nutritional value of goat’s milk, cheese and whey.

AB - The incidence of kidney damage in livestock was monitored in the Czech slaughterhouses
from 2010 to 2021. The results showed that the incidence of kidney damage was lower in all
monitored species (P ˂ 0.05) in fattened animals compared to adult ones. In cattle and pigs, the
incidence of kidney damage was lower (P ˂ 0.01) in fattened animals (bulls, finisher pigs) than
in culled young (calves, piglets). When comparing individual categories of adult animals, the
lowest incidence of kidney damage was found in does and ewes (2.68% and 3.01%, respectively),
then in sows (28.45%), and the highest was in cows (40.46%). Among fattened animals, the
incidence of findings in kidneys was increasing in the order of kids (0.21%), lambs (0.42%), bulls
(10.46%) and finisher pigs (14.42%). Findings of chronic kidney damage were more frequent
than findings of acute (P ˂ 0.01) and parasitic (P ˂ 0.01) origin in all observed categories
of animals. The results show that, from the point of view of the incidence of kidney damage as
a major consequence of imbalance between the organism’s metabolic needs and the nutrition
provided to the animals, there are deficiencies of a significant level, which prove that there is still
significant room for further optimization of the nutrition of individual categories of animals, that
would take into account not only performance, overall clinical health, but also subclinical animal
health, leading to a reduction in the incidence of kidney damage detected in animals at slaughter

AB - In order to determine the added value of the product, characterization of sheep milk
and cheese samples from Sjenica sheep were assessed and compared to British milk
sheep. The analyses were carried out according to standard chemical procedures. A
comparative study showed that the milk from the Sjenica sheep was higher in fat and
protein and had a lower casein/fat ratio. It also had higher total and somatic cell
counts than British milk sheep. Sjenica cheese had significantly higher dry matter
and fat content. However, both cheeses were classified as soft full-fat cheese with
brine. The study showed that sheep's milk contains many essential components for
cheesemaking and distinguishes sheep's cheese from other types of cheese, but
standardisation of cheese production is still needed. To preserve the autochthonous
sheep breeds of Serbia, promoting cheese production with added value is crucial and
together with increased production could contribute to the sustainable development

AB - Several factors have led to a decline in autochthonous breeds, and the
need for conservation programs based on risk assessment has increased. The aim of
the study was to compare and validate two models for risk assessment of local
small ruminant breeds in Serbia. The first model considered only the effective
population size (Ne), while the alternative model included Ne, the number of
females and sub-factors representing the influence of different elements. The
results indicate an increasing trend in most breeds and populations over the last
five years, with the exception of Tsigai and Chokan Tsigai, which showed a
decrease. However, the increasing trend is insufficient, especially for Pirot,
Karakachan, and Bardoka, as well as for the Domestic (Serbian) white goat, which
is classified as critically endangered in both models. Vlashko vitoroga, Chokan
tsigai, and the Balkan goat were at high risk. The models produced different results
for the Krivovir, Sjenica, and Svrljig strains. In the first model, Krivovir was
classified as potentially endangered, whereas Sjenica and Svrljig were not. In the
second model, Krivovir was classified as highly and the other two strains as
potentially endangered. These differences are due to the additional factors in the
second model, which lead to a more comprehensive assessment for future risk
assessments. Although the new model is appropriate for Serbia, it is important to
test it on a variety of native species to increase confidence. Future conservation
programs should also include genetic characterization and implement adaptive
models to obtain more reliable conclusions.

AB - The aim of this work is to ensure the safety of finely chopped cooked sausages stuffed in a cellulose
casing, diameter 21 mm. Safety is ensured by thermal treatment of the level of pasteurization
in a chamber under a defined thermal treatment program. By monitoring the temperature
in the product’s thermal center at different control positions in the chamber, temperatures
of 75.26℃–77.11°C were determined with a thermocouple. In doing so, the products spent
8–9 minutes at a temperature higher than 70°C, and 18–20 minutes at a temperature higher
than 55°C. Considering that it is a small diameter product, the heat intensively penetrates to
the thermal center and thus ensures the safety of the product. However, due to the relatively
short time of the heat treatment, the pasteurization values (pv) at the control points were in the
range of 18.3–26 minutes. Therefore, we conclude that ensuring the safety of products with
a narrower diameter is achieved only by controlling the temperature in the thermal center of
the product, and not with pv values. Considering that this sausage is a perishable product,
it is necessary to provide a proper cold chain (0–4℃) after manufacture so that the product
remains suitable for consumption within the period defined in a shelf‑life study.

(Perissodactyla),
AB - Cosmetic and health effects of donkey milk have been known for thousands of
years. The aim of this research was to determine the chemical composition and
hygienic suitability of the mixed milk of Balkan donkeys obtained by hand milking
from three donkey farms in Vojvodina, with the intention of learning more about
the nutritional properties and safety of donkey milk. In addition, this research
shall contribute to a better understanding of problems and challenges on donkey
farms and indicate the basic needs of donkey milk consumers. The native Balkan
donkey belongs to the Equidae family which is in the order of odd-toed ungulates
(Perissodactyla), bred in the hilly and mountainous areas of the Balkan Peninsula.
Donkey milk is a complex solution with hundreds of components that can be
divided into proteins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins. In terms of its
chemical composition, donkey milk is most similar to mare milk and mother’s
milk, and is significantly different from cow’s, sheep’s and goat’s milk. In search
of a natural healthy lifestyle, people are rediscovering more and more traditional
medicines and foods, which is why donkey milk is nowdays used more and more
frequently. This opens up many opportunities, but also challenges that need to be
overcome.

same farme.
Stabilizovanju
zdravstvenog statusa svinja, pored već pomenutih mera, doprinose i programi vakcinacije. Promocija dobrog zdravlja svinja na komercijalnim farmama obuhvata primenu
sistema profilaktičkih mera, pored dobrog odabira rase, osmišljenosti veličine zapata i
načina primene biotehnoloških mera u procesu proizvodnje.
AB - On commercial pig farms, the health care of individual animals is
losing importance. In today’s production conditions, a large concentration of animals is
relatively present in a small area. This situation requires health care at the farm level.
It is well known that biosecurity measures in pig farming are necessary and aimed to
prevent introduction of pathogens on a commercial farm and also for preventing spreading the infection within the farm itself. Namely, the presence of different breeding
diseases of bacterial or viral etiology leads to a decrease in production. That requires
additional efforts of farm employees and the use of medicines, and this situation ultimately reduces the economic profit of the farm. It is recognized that key elements in implementing biosecurity are the willingness of farm employees to implement measures
that will provide high security with protection against the introduction and spread of
pathogens on the farm. Implementation of the measures requires knowledge of the pigs’
health status on the farm. One of the most common risk factors on the farm is purchasing boars, sows or piglets raised with unknown health status. The promotion of good
pig health on commercial farms involves usage of different prophylactic measures, in
addition to the good breeding selection, the sense of the size of plot, and the way how
biotechnological measures are applied in the pig production process.

AB - Poljoprivredna proizvodnja u Republici Srbiji predstavlja značajnu granu privrede.
preko 40 ovaca i ostavlja svoje brojne potomke. Iz tog razloga, prilikom izrade selekcijskih
programa za određenu rasu, posebnu pažnju treba posvetiti priplodnim ovnovima
i njihovim proizvodnim i reproduktivnim karakteristikama. Pored ostalih selekcijskih
kriterijuma, kliničkim pregledom genitalnih organa i morfometrijskom analizom testisa
celu populaciju lipske ovce.
AB - The agriculture represents an important branch of economy in the Republic of
Serbia. Animal production is mainly based on traditional small family housholds. Sheep
production is an important branch of agriculture in the Republic of Serbia, where a total
of 1.7 million sheep are reared in over 155.000 households, mainly under semiextensive
menagement. The majority of sheep are autochthonous breeds and local types adapted
to the local environment. Because of the endangered status of the autochthonous sheep
breeds, conservation and improvement of these precious populations is needed, as they
have a major potential in the sustainable agricultural production. The main focus should be given to the selection of breeding rams, as they have the biggest impact on the
population quality. One high quality breeding ram can mate over 40 ewes over the mating
seasone and leave offspring. Taking this in mind, when the selection criterias are
defined for a breed, a special attention should be given to the ram, to its productive and
reproductive traits. Amongother selection criteria, the clinical assessment of the genital
tract with a special attention on scrotal circumference could result in better health and
quality of the population. It is well known that rams with bigger scrotal circumference
(bigger testicles) can have a better reproductive capacity and can serve more ewes in
the mating season, what makes a stronger impact of rams on the population quality. In
countries with specialized sheep production these characteristics are inclusded into the
selection measures and breeding rams older than 1.5 years with healthy genitals should
have a scrotal circumference of minimum 33 cm, and the ideal score means that the
ram should have is≥ 35 cm, and the elite ones ≥ 38 cm. The Lipe sheep is a local autochthonous
breed of the Republic of Serbia, which has a breeding population size of 800
animals in 2019. According to the national legislation that time it had a status of a critically
endangered breedwith. As a result of hogher subsidies for the last few years, the
population size rises and in 2021 reached 2000 breeding animals which means it got a
status of potentially endangered breed. Assessment of the genital tract ofbreeding rams
of the Lipe sheep showed good health of the genitalia, with an average scrotal circumference
of 38.35cm, but with evidence of big variations. The average scrotal circumference
of 38.35cm means an excellent result on a population level. Eventhough the overall
scrotal circumference is excellent on the population level, because of the fact that most
of the herds are small (up to 20 breeding animals) with only one breeding ram, the animals
with insufficient values of scrotal circumference (≥ 33) could have negative results
not only at the herd level, but also at the population level of the endangered Lipe
sheep. With the aim to improve and save the endangered autochthonous rare breed and
ensure a high quality elite breeding rams in each flock, it is necessary to update the selective
measures with new criteria regarding the assessment of the male genital tract.

abstract = "Poljoprivredna proizvodnja u Republici Srbiji predstavlja značajnu granu privrede.
preko 40 ovaca i ostavlja svoje brojne potomke. Iz tog razloga, prilikom izrade selekcijskih
programa za određenu rasu, posebnu pažnju treba posvetiti priplodnim ovnovima
i njihovim proizvodnim i reproduktivnim karakteristikama. Pored ostalih selekcijskih
kriterijuma, kliničkim pregledom genitalnih organa i morfometrijskom analizom testisa
Ispitivanja populacija lipskog soja pramenke

AB - The present study was conducted in 30 cattle herd from the territory of Banat (Vojvodina) in
the period of March to October 2019, during the grazing season was to established tick fauna
in that arae. Ticks were collected from cattle and from pastures where they were grazed. The
tick species and sex/gender were identified by morphometric characteristics. Relative
abundance analysis revealed that the I. ricinus was absolutely dominant species found in
71.22%, followed by Haemaphysalis punctata (18.22%), Dermacentor marginatus (11.72%),
Rhipicephalus sanguineus (3.22%) and Rhipicephalus bursa (2.01%). On the pasture,
however, the most common species was H. punctata, followed by I. ricinus, D. marginatus, R.
sanguineus and R.bursa. Out of the total number of ticks collected, 53.65% were females and
46.35% were males. The sex ratio showed a higher number of females in four species (Ixodes
ricinus, Haemaphysalis punctata, Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Dermacentor marginatus),
while higher number of males were detected in Rhipicephalus bursa. The population dynamics
of recorded tick species showed two annual maxima, in spring (April-May) and in autumn
(September-October). The considerable interchange between spring and autumn tick
populations can be attributed mainly to environmental conditions.

AB - The aim of this work is to research, preserve and archive the exact genetic background and the
associated ancestry of native sheep breeds in a genetic database. In this study, the focus is on the
direct comparison of the Cikta and the Forest Sheep (Waldschaf). For this purpose, the genomes
of both breeds were compared with the control region in the mtDNA. The biological samples for
this study were collected between 2015 and 2017 from a total of 97 individuals, 70 from Cikta
(Hungary) and 27 from Forest Sheep (Austria). The total number of polymorphic sites was 125;
the number of shared mutations was 51, showing significant genetic identity between the breeds.
The result of Tajima's D-test was -0.47672 and showed no significance (P>0.10) as well as the
value of the Fs statistic of FU and LIs (0.76212), which is also considered not significant. These
are still in the genetic equilibrium. A deviation from it does not endanger the examined community

Nju uzrokuju pantljičare Moniezia expansa i Moniezia benedini.

AB - This research aimed for the first time to identify the essential welfare
problems on 46 goat dairy farms in Vojvodina, based on the goat AWIN
welfare protocol. The study showed that space allowance per goat was 1.55,
1.86 and 2.50 m2/goat (large, medium, small-sized farms, respectively). Most
farms possessed the soil floor and straw as a flooring material. The small
and medium farms more allowed access to the outdoor area. Contrary,
large-sized farms mostly kept goats in fully housed systems with reduced
opportunities for the goats to express their natural behavior. Management
procedures were significantly different (p < 0.05) between the investigated
farms. Differences were mainly in bedding, feeding and culling strategies.
Low productivity was the main cause of culling in all farm types. Small-sized
farms carried out more often disbudding (42.9%) in comparison with medium
(21.4%) and large-sized ones (14.3%). Group level observation showed
that the main areas of concern were associated with hair coat condition and
kneeling at the feeding rack (p < 0.05). Inadequate BCS, udder asymmetry
and claw overgrowth were frequently recorded. The prevalence of thin and
fat goats was highest in large-sized farms All farm size categories and
management systems showed certain welfare weaknesses. Thus, the findings
highlighted the need for higher implementation of animal welfare
principles and improvement of management techniques to meet the welfare
requirements of dairy goats.

AB - Autochthonous breeds are the pillar of sustainable animal production worldwide. From a total of
8719 livestock breeds, 26 percent are classified as at risk of extinction, 13 percent as not at risk, 6
percent as extinct and 55 percent as being of unknown risk status. Therefore, conservation is of
high priority. The Podolian cattle is one of the most endangered breed from the list of native breeds
of livestock in Serbia. In 2021 only 338 breeding animals were registered. The breed is known as
a precious resource of the local landscape enrichment, national heritage and history. According to
the population size of the Podolian cattle, a slight increasing tendency can be evidented. The
population size is variable (154 breeding animals in 2009, 252 in 2010, 270 in 2011, 260 in 2012,
264 in 2013, 306 in 2014, 258 in 2015, 263 in 2016, 338 in 2017, 317 in 2018, 357 in 2019, 416
in 2020 and 338 in 2021). The Podolian cattle population in Serbia belongs to the I group (critically
endangered). Over the time the governmental subsidies influenced the overall slight increase of
the number of breeding animals, but the population size is not stabile. Improved conservation
program should be applied to save the autochthonous endangered breed suitable for heritage
oriented sustainable production in an authentic environment.

Takođe, karakteristika visoke liposolu¬bilnosti obezbeđuje doksiciklinu i odlične farmakokinetičke osobine. Apsorpcija iz dige¬stivnog trakta je brza i gotovo potpuna (preko 90%), a to omogućava primenu relativ¬no niskih peroralnih doza i minimalizuje neželjene efekte na gastrointestinalni trakt. Visok stepen lipofilnosti doksiciklina, pored osta¬log, doprinosi i visokom volumenu njegove distribucije i značajnom vezivanju za prote¬ine plazme, što rezultira dugim poluvremenom eliminacije. Posle resorpcije, doksiciklin visoke koncentracije postiže u jetri, bubrezima, plućima, slezini, žuči i kostima. Prolazi hematoencefalnu barijeru i u cerebrospinalnoj tečnosti postiže približno 30% koncen-tracije u plazmi.

Posle resorpcije, doksiciklin visoke koncentracije postiže u jetri, bubrezima, plućima, slezini, žuči i kostima. Prolazi hematoencefalnu barijeru i u cerebrospinalnoj tečnosti postiže približno 30% koncen-tracije u plazmi.

AB - The presence of chemical environmental pollutants (heavy metals) and their influence on
health status of farm animals has been study in long period. We monitored the influence of
chemical pollutants on rodents leaving on farms. Heavy metals has special danger for leaving
systems, which react with organic molecules to change their structures and function. Heavy
metals enter the body through respiratory system, digestive system and skin. The results of
our many years of research indicate that there is danger of contamination of animal feed with
heavy metals and their position in their body of animals, as well as a negative effect on the
reproductive capacity of domestic animals. Heavy metal toxicity general leads to the formation
of free radicals, inhibiting the activity of antioxidant defense enzymes as well as glutathione
oxidation and the formation malonyl dialdehyde (MDA) as a marker of oxidative stress. Their
toxicity stems from the tendency to form covalent bonds with sulfhydryl groups of
biomacromolecules or displace certain cofactors, there by inhibiting the activity of certain
enzymes. Our recommendation for industrial type farms is to reduce the risk of heavy metals.
To introduce multilevel monitoring of the quality of raw materials and final products, as well as
to apply adequate protectors against the toxic effect of these agents.

AB - The incidence of mastitis in dairy herds is one of the main difficulties faced by dairy farmers, with a negative effect on the productivity of the herd and the welfare of the animals. Somatic cell count in milk is an indicator of udder health and frequency of clinical and subclinical mastitis incidence in dairy herds, and it is also often used to determine quality payments to dairy producers. Milk urea can be an indicator of the nutritional status of the dairy cows. The interpretation of these parameters assists in making important management decisions with regards to the health status and nutrition of dairy cattle. The objective of this study was to identify and evaluate environmental factors (farm, season, parity and stage of lactation) which affect the milk production and composition of Holstein breed, using field data. The presented research included 25,460 individual milk samples which were analysed as part of the Dairy Herd Improvement program, from 11 Holstein dairy farms in the region of Vojvodina, Northern Serbia. Analyses of raw milk samples were carried out on the FOSS instruments - CombiFossTMFT+, a combination instrument consisting of the MilcoScanTMFT+ and the FossomaticTMFC. Statistical data processing was carried out by applying General Linear Model procedure, Statistics 13. Farm, season of milk control, parity and stage of lactation were included in the models as fixed effects. Significant differences in milk urea concentrations and somatic cell count were observed between farms (P<0.01), seasons (P<0.01), parity (P<0.01) and stage of lactation (P<0.01). Results showed that there were a highly significant (P<0.01) positive relationships between milk urea (MU) concentration and milk yield, MU and milk fat content, and between MU and solids non-fat (SNF), also between somatic cell count (SCC) and milk fat content, between SCC and protein content, as well as in between SCC and SNF. Highly significant negative relationships were found between milk urea and protein content and SCC, and between SCC and daily milk yield and lactose content. Proper analyses and interpretation of obtained results of milk samples obtained within the Dairy Herd Improvement program could contribute to better health management on the farms and it could have a positive impact on composition and nutritional value of milk, as well as on milk safety. It would be important to carry out further research in order to facilitate the detection of subclinical mastitis with MU as a potential indicator.
