AB - The role of wildlife in maintaining infectious diseases in veterinary medicine is often neglected, although the
disease eradication process in domestic animals is continuously affected by the risk of pathogens transmission
from wildlife as a primary source. The main aim of this paper was to estimate the prevalence and distribution of
selected infectious diseases in wild ruminants in Serbia. In total, 259 sera from wild ruminants were tested for
specific antibodies to bluetongue virus, Schmallenberg virus, Bovine viral diarrhea/border disease virus, Capripox
virus, West Nile fever virus, Bovine herpes virus-1, Coxiella burnetii, Brucella spp., and Leptospira spp.
Specific Capripox virus and Leptospira spp. antibodies were not detected in any of the 259 wild ruminant
samples. Although one animal was detected positive for BVDV/BDV specific antibodies, with 99.8% confidence,
the prevalence of BVD within this population could be very low i.e. essentially free from BVD infection. One and
three positive animals were detected for Brucella spp. and Coxiella burnetii antibodies, respectively. Bovine herpes
virus-1 specific antibodies were detected in 20.85% of the samples. The estimated seroprevalence of vector-borne
diseases was 20.5% for Schmallenberg disease, 34.3% for West Nile fever, and 38.6% for Bluetongue.
Considering the reported results, wildlife health status is a result of different factors in complex relation, such
as the presence of disease in domestic animals, disease nature, pathogen characteristics, environmental factors,
presence, and vector competence. Wildlife should be considered not only as a risk but as a source of important
information on disease distribution and its indicators.

AB - Mycoplasma bovis (M. bovis) is a significant pathogen responsible for highly transmissible
mastitis in cattle globally. It primarily spreads through colostrum, milk, and semen. Cows with
persistent infections act as carriers, intermittently releasing the pathogen, making their milk a pivotal
factor in infection transmission. Given the limited seroprevalence surveys in Serbia, this study aimed
to detect M. bovis presence in bulk tank milk (BTM), determine route shedding, and evaluate infection
risks. BTM samples were collected from 115 dairy farms across Serbia, with M. bovis DNA detected
in 11 out of the 115 samples by real-time PCR. Additionally, M. bovis was detected in 1.30% of nasal
swabs sampled from apparently healthy animals. A univariate analysis of the risk factors associated
with M. bovis presence in the BTM samples revealed correlations with factors such as the breed, farm
seropositivity, pre-milking and post-milking disinfection practices, farm type, cow population, milk
yield, number of cows in the BTM samples, and parity. Seropositive farms exhibited the highest
likelihood of M. bovis presence in milk. Moreover, pre- and post-milking disinfection practices and
highly productive cows yielding over 8000 L of milk were identified as risk factors for PCR-positive
BTM. In a multivariable mixed regression analysis, a risk factor for the presence of M. bovis infection
in the BTM sample was the Holstein breed. These findings underscore a relatively high prevalence
of M. bovis in BTM within Serbian dairy farms, suggesting a potential risk for M. bovis spreading
through milk and oral route of calves’ infection.

Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica
S. Enteritidis, S. Infantis, S. Mbandaka, S.
Senftenberg, S. Typhimurium, S. Agona, S. Taksony и S. Shiongwe.
AB - Poultry salmonellosеs are group of diseases caused by Gram-negative bacteria from the
Enterobacteriaceae and species Salmonella enterica. Of about 2500 serotypes of this
species, about 10% are isolated from poultry. Special significance of salmonella comes
from their character, as some serotypes can endanger human health leading to
gastrointestinal toxin infections due to the consumption of poultry products. Vertical
transmission is described by transovarian route to offspring, but also horizontal
transmission, the most often by faecal secretion. The greatest risk for human well-being
is the finding of Salmonella in poultry meat, in the eggs and on the eggshells. Some poultry
can be infected with Salmonella without showing any clinical signs of the disease, but
nevertheless being a significant source of infection, while clinical symptoms range from
digestive problems (white diarrhoea, malabsorption), to bacteraemia and death. The aim
of this paper is to retrospective presence of bacteria Salmonella enterica subspecies
enterica in poultry in the Belgrade epizootiological area. Observation included samples
of: embryonic eggs, day-old chicken cadavers, broiler and laying hens faeces samples
investigated in six-year period. Salmonellae were isolated by standard microbiological
methods followed by serological typing.
In the examined number of positive samples of poultry salmonella ranged from 879
recorded in 2017 to 65 in 2018, while significantly lower findings were recorded in 2016
and 2021 with 7 positive samples, while 4 were recorded in 2022, and during 2023, 2
positive samples. The serotypes isolated in the mentioned period are S. Enteritidis, S.
Infantis, S. Mbandaka, S. Senftenberg, S. Typhimurium, S. Agona, S. Taksony and S.
Shiongwe. The most positive samples were found in the feces of laying hens, followed by
the feces of broilers, carcasses of one-day-old chickens and embryonated eggs.
Complete eradication of Salmonella from production is a difficult goal because of the
presence of a large number of Salmonella serotypes and various sources of infection, but
a proper control strategy must therefore be executed to prevent the risk of contamination.
Prevention is the best tool for controlling Salmonella: hygiene, biosecurity and
vaccination. It is a great responsibility of the breeders to apply the existing standards and
to improve the new ones.

AB - Fowl adenovirus infections have a significant economic impact, especially in the production of broilers. It is considered the leading cause of three syndromes: Adenoviral gizzard erosions and ulcerations, inclusion body hepatitis, and hepatitis-hydropericardium syndrome. A critical feature of this virus is its immunosuppressive effect, via suppressing humoral and cellular immunity. In this study, we examined the humoral immune response after administration of the Newcastle disease vaccine in broiler flocks with previously confirmed seroconversion against Fowl adenovirus. The study was conducted on 5 farms. A total of 220 chickens, five weeks of age, showing no clinical signs of the disease, were included in this study. The control group consisted of 20 chickens from a negative farm. Chickens were vaccinated with commercially available live NDV vaccines between 11 and 13 days of life. ELISA determined the presence of specific antibodies against FAdV in a total of 130/200 (65%) blood sera. Depending on the farm, seroprevalence ranged from 30-100%. The presence of specific antibodies against NDV was determined three weeks after vaccination using the hemagglutination inhibition assay. A positive hemagglutination inhibition (HI) titer (≥ 16) was found in 41/200 (20.5%) sera, which was significantly less compared to the control farm, where a positive HI titer was found in 20/20 (100%) sera. The results of our study indicate the immunosuppressive effect of FAdV in subclinically infected birds and highlight the need for its diagnosis, prevention, and control

abstract = "Fowl adenovirus infections have a significant economic impact, especially in the production of broilers. Depending on the farm, seroprevalence ranged from 30-100%. predstavljaju značajnu opasnost po javno zdravlje. Kontaminacija sirovina, u ovom
slučaju trupova svinja, odnosno mesa je najčešće posledica primenjenih postupaka u
primarnoj proizvodnji i zavisi od primene dobre proizvođačke/higijenske prakse duž
lanca proizvodnje mesa, naročito tokom operacija klanja i dalje obrade. Indikator
mikroorganizmi, predstavljaju informaciju o higijeni procesa i neadekvatnim
postupcima koji su korišćenjni tokom proizvodnje. Predstavnici enterobakterija
predstavljaju dobar indikator higijene i poštovanja dobre proizvodne/higijenske
prakse, jer se relativno brzo i jednostavno otkrivaju. Nalaz bakterija roda Salmonella
u brisevima sa trupova zaklanih svinja predstavlja indikator higijene proizvodnog
procesa.
dodirom trupova dolazi do unakrsne kontaminacije.

AB - Schmallenberg disease is an infectious disease of cattle, sheep, and goats of viral
aetiology caused by the Schmallenberg virus that belongs to the family Bunyaviridae and
the genus Ortobunyavirus. Schmallenberg disease is a vector-borne disease transmitted by
midges from the genus Culicoides but also by other hematophagous insects. The disease
has a seasonal character and most often occurs in the warm months, from late spring
to autumn. In this study, we investigated the seroprevalence of Schmallenberg disease
in sheep in the epizootic area of Belgrade in the period from 2017 to 2022. A total of
600 sheep serums from the serum bank were tested, 100 serum samples from each year.
Sera were tested by commercial ELISA test for the detection of specifi c antibodies
against the Schmallenberg virus. The results showed an average annual seroprevalence
of 24.5% in sheep in the Belgrade area in these six years with an increasing trend
predicted for the next years.

AB - The aim of this work was to determine the fatty acid profile and health lipid indices of fresh
turkey meat, as well as products obtained from turkey meat, i.e. turkey sausage and pate.
Turkey breast muscles were cut from the side of the carcass, separately vacuum packed
and stored in a refrigerator before analysis. Sausages and pate were produced from turkey
meat using a technological process. The fatty acid profile of the samples was determined
by gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector (GC/FID), and lipid indices were
calculated based on the composition. Turkey muscle had a higher percentage of C16:0 and
C18:0 than turkey sausage and pate. A significantly higher proportion of saturated fatty acids
(47.9%) than in sausage and pate, 27.2 and 8.9%, respectively, characterized turkey muscle.
The lowest determined proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids for turkey muscle was
12.0%. The atherogenicity index was satisfactory for all three tested products, while the
thrombogenicity index was satisfactory only for the tested raw turkey muscle meat (1.656).

AB - Lameness is one of the high influence production illnesses in intensive dairy production farming, it reduces milk yield andcan also negatively affect the quality of milk. Many factors can affect the production of milk components. Subsequently, breed, nutrition, milk yield, various metabolic disorders, and lameness can have an effect on the
synthesis of milk components. White line disease and sole ulcers are widespread hoof diseases of cows in tied-holding
systems. Albeit the main cause of lameness, associations between claw disorders of cows and variation of milk components haven’t been widely studied in Simmental cows. The objective of our study was to investigate the effect ofwhite
line disease and sole ulcers on the percentage of milk components of Simmental dairy cows kept in the small households in Mačva locality, Serbia. For milk analysis were enrolled36 cowsin the study: affected by white line disease
(n=12), sole ulcers (n=12), and healthy cows (n=12)in the early stage of lactation. Milk components (milk protein, fat,
and non-fat dry matter) were analyzed using Lactoscan S.Significance of differences in milk component characteristics
between white line disease, sole ulcers, and healthy groups were tested using a Kruskal-Wallis multiple comparisons
test. The percentage of milk fat of cows affectedby white line disease and cows affected by sole ulcers were significantly
lower than those of non-lame cows: 3.80%, 3.69%, and 4.18%, respectively (both p<0.05).However, differences inthe
contents of milk protein and the contents of non-fat dry matter of cows affected by white line disease, sole ulcers, and
in health cows were not significantly different(p>0.05).Our results indicate that hoof diseases of cows namelywhite line
disease and sole ulcers, are associated with reduced significantly milk fat production in lame Simmental cows.

AB - Th is case report describes the acute mastitis with signs of endotoxemia in the 32-month-old Simmental cow, antimicrobial susceptibility of
Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from a milk sample, and demonstrates the
eff ectiveness of the applied therapy. Case presentation included the cowlying syndrome together with the presence of clinical signs of endotoxemia
accompanied by milk discoloration and “clots” formation. Bacteriology
fi nding of the K. pneumoniae and antibiogram pointed that the isolate was
sensitive to ceft riaxone, and trimethoprim/ sulfamethoxazole, while resistant to amoxicillin, gentamicin, ampicillin, ceft iofur, and cephalexin. Th e selection of treatment options came from the availability of an adequate route
of administration, urgency for treatment, and lack of time for assessment
of other body functions. Th e therapy by ceft riaxone at an intravenous dose
rate of 8mg/kg with adequate supportive therapy NSAID, vitamin C, and
correction dehydration showed a successful eff ect in life-saving procedures.
Th e outcome of K. pneumoniae mastitis with endotoxemia did not aff ect the
outcome of pregnancy.

Dovodi do
pojave ekonomskih gubitaka zbog odbacivanja mleka i terapije obolelih krava.
krvarenje usled dijapedeze, infektivna bolest (leptospiroza), trombocitopenija,
dijapedeza usled hiperemije posle porođaja, deficit vitamina. Patofiziologija
procesa i tačan uzrok njegovog nastanka nisu utvrđeni. Hemolaktija se može javiti
u bilo kojoj fazi laktacije, a najveći problem javljaju u prvim danima laktacije.
fazi laktacije, pretežno u prvih 100 dana laktacije. Trajanje hemolaktije zavisi od
inteziteta kliničkog skora. Postoje brojni protokoli za kontrolu i skraćivanje trajanja
hemolaktije.
K, antikoagulansa, vazokonstriktora, vitamina C.

AB - Lameness causes significant economic losses in dairy cows. Lesions of the foot are the cause
of about 85% of all lameness in dairy cows. In addition, lameness can be localized in other
places of the locomotor system such as joints, muscles, and skin. The aim of this study was to
show the distribution of locomotor lesions in dairy cows. A total of 144 Simmental dairy
cows (36 primiparous and 108 multiparous) from 10 small dairy farms located in the Macva
district, Serbia were observed during regular hoof trimming. All cows were housed in a tiedholding
system. The clinical examination focused on all possible alternations on the observed
hooves and legs. Lesions of the horn, skin, joints, and leg injuries were noted. Of the 144
animals presenting for a hoof trim, 49 cows (34.0%) had no locomotor lesions noted. In this
study, lesions were present in 95 (66,0%) of all examined cows. Locomotor lesions of the
horn were detected in 82.4% (61/74 of cases), skin 2.7%, joints in 10.8%, and leg injuries in
4.05% of the cases in multiparous cows. Thus, lesions of the horn were detected in 61.9%
(13/21 of cases), skin 4.7%, joint in 23.8% and leg injuries in 9.5% of the cases in
primiparous cows. Our results show that lesions on the hooves are the most dominant site of
the locomotor system.

of prevalence and incidence, accompanied by significant morbidity and moderate mortality. The main goal of the parasitic
infection control program is to improve the health status of sheep and goats. Planned application of biosecurity measures is
crucial in protecting the health of small ruminants and the success of production.

AB - The present study was conducted in 52 sheep flocks from the territory of east Serbia in the
period of March to November 2017, using into consideration the sesonal occurance and
prevalence of ticks. Ticks were from sheep by means lightly sprung forceps. The tick species
and sex/gender were identified by morphometric characteristics. In total, we examined 216
sheep and tick infestation was detected in 39.24% of examined animals. The most abundant
species was Ixodes ricinus found in 41.91%, followed by Dermacentor marginatus (27.91%),
Rhipicephalus bursa (10.92%), R.sanguineus (9.92%), D.recticulatus (5.51%) and
Haemaphysalis punctata (3.97%). Of the total number of collected ticks, 57.15% were
females and 42.85% were males. The population maximum for Dermacentor marginatus,
D.recticulatus and Haemaphysalis punctata occurred in April. In May was population peak
for I.ricinus and it was noted that this species started to decrease in abundance in June.
Rhipicephalus sanguineus and R.bursa reached maxima decreasing until August, and
disappearing completely in September and October. The autumn population peak in
September occurred for the I.ricinus and Rhipicephalus sanguineus and in October for the
I.ricinus and R.bursa.

Entomophagy — a novel option in animal and human nutrition

AB - Entomophagy is not a new phenomenon in the world. Moreover, it is a traditional diet in a
large part of the planet. However, in the European framework it belongs to the category of
novel food and although the topic is often debated, it represents a growing choice in human
and animal nutrition. Edible insects have the potential to serve as a healthy, sustainable alternative to animal protein sources due to their valuable nutritional composition. They may have
superior health benefits based on high levels of essential amino acids, omega-3 and omega-6
fatty acids, vitamin B12, iron, zinc, fibre and antioxidants. They could offer a myriad of environmental benefits, including overall reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and reduced
use of agricultural land and water. Future research should aim to understand the beneficial
effects of whole insects or insect isolates compared to traditional foods of animal and plant
origin. Although insects have the potential to be used as meat substitutes or dietary supplements, leading to benefits for human health and the environment, this paper does not aim to
ultimately propagate their use, but to point out their advantages and qualities, as well as potential dangers and risks, and finally to present ways of placing insects on the European market.

abstract = "Entomophagy is not a new phenomenon in the world.
Future research should aim to understand the beneficial
effects of whole insects or insect isolates compared to traditional foods of animal and plant
origin. Although insects have the potential to be used as meat substitutes or dietary supplements, leading to benefits for human health and the environment, this paper does not aim to
ultimately propagate their use, but to point out their advantages and qualities, as well as potential dangers and risks, and finally to present ways of placing insects on the European market.",

zadržavanja i vezivanja vode široko koriste. Upotreba fosfatnih aditiva dovodi do uspostavljanja
jonskog kapaciteta u mesnom proizvodu.
količinu odnosa vode i proteina. Obrađeni su podaci dobijenih analizom 30 uzoraka ispitanih
dimljenih svinjskih pečenica nakon industrijske proizvodnje. Na ispitanim uzorcima su
sprovedene sledeće analize: sadržaj fosfata (izražen kao P2O5), vlage, proteina, masti i pepela. Cilj
upravo postignuto adekvatnim odnosom soli i vode.
sadržaj vode (odnosa vode i proteina) u gotovim proizvodima dobijenih dimljenih pečenica.
Dobijene vrednosti količine fosfata u krajnjem proizvodu su bile ispod maksimalno dozvoljene
vrednosti fosfata propisane nacionalnom regulativom. Nutritivna vrednost dobijene dimljene

Poteškoće i
složenosti u tumačenju prisustva ostataka pesticida u prerađenoj hrani dovode do
situacije da se kontrola često zanemaruje. Uredbom Evropske komisije (EC) br.

AB - Infection with coccidia is one of the most common and damaging sheep diseases, particularly young lambs and
economically important diseases of sheep. Coccidiosis is caused by parasitic protozoa in the genus Eimeria. Coccidial
infection is virtually universal in sheep and large numbers of oocysts may be found in the faeces of clinically normal
animals. Usually it is presented at animals at 4-10 weeks.Lamb and kids infection had moderate morbidity and low
mortality rate. Environmental contamination and resulting clinical disease is generally influenced by local weather
conditions and the grazing management practices of the flock. In our paper, we present measures to control coccidiosis
in sheep kept in frame breeding conditions.

Osnovni cilj programa kontrole parazitskih
infekcija jeste podizanje zdravstvenog statusa ovaca i koza u Republici Srbiji. Spre-
Biosigurnost,

AB - Coenurosisa is a zoonotic disease caused by the larval forms of Taenia
multiceps which are great host's animals from the family of canids. The disease is
global distribution but is most present in the Mediterranean, Middle East, Central
Africa and Australia. Larvae exhibit tropism toward brain tissue, and cysts are
usually located in the left hemisphere of the brain of small ruminants. Involvement
of the brain can cause increased intracranial pressure, seizures, loss of
consciousness, and focal neurologic deficits. During 2022 we examinee one flocks
of 78 milking sheep reared on hilly pastures located below the Zmajevac hill (397
m), between the branches of the Osimćki mountains and the river Zapadna Morava,
at an altitude of 178 m. Symptoms of ataxia, such as unsteady gait and stumbling,
and depression were observed in 12 animals. In 5 sheep, continuous aimless or
circular movement, wandering, was also manifested. In addition to these
symptoms, in one sheep that died, visual disturbances were observed depression
and unilateral blindness. All affected sheep were slaughtered and a
pathoanatomical examination was performed. In the brain of all animals we
revealed the presence of infestation with one to four coenuri 4.1-5.5 cm in size.
The sites of predilection were the left hemisphere (48%), followed by the right
hemisphere (40%) and the cerebellum (12%). The coenurus has a thin wall
surrounding a single cavity that contains a clear fluid. When the cysts were
opened, numerous scoleces were found inside, from 2 to 3 mm in diameter attached
to the cyst wall. Each scolex has four circular suckers and two rows of hooks on a
rostellum. The hook lengths are 147 to 165 µm and 87 to 125 µm.The results show
that C. cerebralis was a major cause of the nervous manifestations of cenurosis in
clinically affected sheep.

abstract = "Coenurosisa is a zoonotic disease caused by the larval forms of Taenia
multiceps which are great host's animals from the family of canids.

AB - Parasitic infections cause significant losses to swine production in the farm system. Aim of our work is to presented measures
to control parasitic infections at farms breeding swine. The basic measures that were developed and applied were: 1. Use the
principles of good production and hygiene practices, 2. Management of the production process, 3. Parasitological diagnostics
4. Application of antiparasitic drugs 5. Strict compliance with biosecurity measures 6. General animal hygiene measures 7.
Pest control and disinfection 8. Control of stray dogs and cats on the farm and control of birds 9. Removal of corpses 10.
Removal of waste 11. Educational program. The application of this integrated control concept of parasite infection required
systematic monitoring of infection on farms and slaughterhouses before and after the applied measures. During the control
before the application of the measures, then six months later, the results obtained showed a reduction in the prevalence of
parasitic infections by over 80%. Certainly, the complexity of the problem required the involvement of all relevant entities,
primarily veterinary services, from farms to slaughterhouses.

AB - Diarrhea in newborn calves creates major problems, creating major economic losses.
Viral causes of diarrhea Corona and Rota virus in the first days of life lead to severe
diarrhea that can end in the death of calves. Rota and Corona viruses open the door
for secondary bacterial agents, complicating the clinical picture of diarrhea. This
paper presents a case of diarrhea in calves caused by Rota viruses and the result of
vaccination after the case. On the farm of 20 cows, the Simmental breed, in July 2022,
the deaths of 3 calves, aged from 5 to 12 days, were recorded. Despite the applied
adequate therapy, the calves died quickly. The clinical picture in the affected calves
was acute, with marked profuse content, with dehydration and apathy present. In
addition, as a significant predisposing factor for the occurrence of diarrhea is heat
stress, where daily temperatures ranged up to 40 ℃. Rectal swabs from sick calves
were taken for diagnostic testing. The presence of Rotavirus in the test swabs was
confirmed by the PCR method. Due to the current problem on the farm, all pregnant
cows were vaccinated in the period 4-12 weeks before the expected calving date with
a commercially available vaccine. Vaccination of cows during the drying period 4-12
weeks before the expected calving against Corona and Rotavirus achieves adequate
passive immune protection in newborn calves. The results of vaccination of highly
pregnant cows are reflected in the reduction of diarrhea, the reduction of death rates,
the reduction of treatment costs, as well as the reduced use of antibiotics is the most
important task in preventing the further growth of antimicrobial resistance. The most
important conclusion from this case is that no new cases of diarrhea were recorded,
the use of antibiotics in calves from vaccinated cows was significantly reduced, and in
the later stages of rearing such calves had much fewer health problems.

vezikularna bolest svinja, vezikularni stomatitis, vezikularni egzantem svinja i Seneka bolest
svinja. Virus slinavke i šapa, virus vezikularne bolesti svinja i Senecavirus A pripadaju familiji
Picornaviridae.
svinja karakteriše apatijom, febrom, pojavom vezikula u predelu rila, usne šupljine, papaka i
šapa i drugi virusi.
ispitivanja. Uzorci prvog prioriteta su pokrovni epitel vezikula, sadržaj vezikula, oralni/nazalni brisevi i uzorci krvi. Laboratorijska dijagnostika omogućava dobijanje rezultata u roku od
nekoliko časova.

AB - A female mouflon, weighing 40 kilograms, was submitted to the diagnostic laboratory of the Institute of Veterinary Medicine of Serbia for determining the potential cause of death. Necropsy revealed massive hemorrhages in subcutaneous andintermuscular tissue and on papillary muscle. Petechiae and ecchymoses were found on the omentum, mesentery and adipose tissue of heart, kidneyand costal pleura.Haemorrhagic-necrotic enteritis in duodenum and jejunum was characterized by catarrhal hemorrhagic inflammation withthe presence of mucous and bloody content, whereas gas bubbles in the submucosa have also been confirmed. Bacterial cultures from sampled organs were identified as Clostridium perfringens type A, Clostridium septicum, and Clostridium sordelli.Based on the established pathological and histological changes and the results of the bacteriological, biochemical, and molecular examination, the state of septic shock and toxemia with disseminated massive bleeding was the immediate cause of mouflon death. The septic condition is a consequence of enterotoxemia caused by Clostridium perfringens type A, Clostridium septicum, and Clostridium sordelliinfection.

AB - Brucellosis is one of the most important bacterial zoonotic diseases worldwide, characterized in domestic animals by long-term reproductive disorders. As known, wild boars (Sus scrofa) are
natural hosts for Brucella suis biovar 2, in which the infection passes in inapparent form, increasing
the pathogen transmission risk to domestic pigs, other domestic animals and humans. So far, no
studies regarding brucellosis in wild boars in Serbia have been published. During the hunting
season 2020/2021, 480 sera of wild boars living in Serbia were collected and tested for the presence
of anti-Brucella antibodies. For the serological survey, the Rose Bengal Test (RBT) and competitive
enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (c-ELISA) were used. Of the 480 sera, 45 sera tested positive,
indicating the acquired Brucella seroprevalence in wild boars of 9.4%. The greatest numbers of
Brucella seropositive animals were detected in the eastern parts of the country and in one of the
central districts, i.e., Pomoravski, Branicevski, Borski and Juznobanatski. This study provides the
first data regarding brucellosis in the wild boar population in Serbia, revealing the seroprevalence of
Brucella, thus indicating that wild boars as natural hosts and/or vectors of Brucella likely present a
risk for the infection of other animals.
